Don't feel alone in that, Lee!

I don't. To be honest, I think some of it has to do with me getting older-I am balding, am getting more and more gray in my hair(what's left of it), in my short-trimmed beard, and even more gray hair on my chest freak out . I accept getting older, Kimi, and all the subtle physical changes that go along with it. I don't like it though, and I never will. <_<

I used to be told, when I was still working that it was obvious that I took pride in my work and always did my absolute best, clear to see you feel the same way....if you're going to do a job, you want to do it well. :)

A good work ethic is a character trait that, IMO, never leaves a person. It is a part of a person's "make up" that stays with them forever, whether they are working, or not. thumbs up

my shirt still managed to have it's own unique smell!
In eleven years in the landscaping industry my shirts, and trousers, have often acquired "smells" of their own, because of the often dirty side of my line of work. Most notable odors in my clothes over the years:

Pesticides-specifically an insecticide sprayed on birch trees to kills mites and aphids. The odor is so strong that a breather mask is an absolute necessity.

Mushroom Compost-usually sold by retailers and nurseries in 40 lb bags, this product, most often used to enrich flower beds, before the installation of flowers, becomes especially stinky if it gets wet. The smell reminds me of a cross between rotten eggs and a frequently used, and long overdue to be cleaned out, porta-potty. freak out

10-10-10 fertilizer(aka "starter" fertilizer"]-most commonly sold in 40-50 lb bags as granules, this all-purpose fertilizer(for trees/shrubs/turf) can leave a surprisingly long and malingering stink on your hands. nonono

Wow! Hard to believe we're down to 8 or 9 days left before Christmas Eve/Day! freak out I feel very good about the shopping I've done, so far and while there's still a little left to do, nothing that has caused any panic. Actually beginning to look like the cookies may not get baked, this year. :( I haven't been feeling very well and Carol and I both said we just can't seem to get into that mode needed to bake, all day!

Carol's mini vacation begins next Thursday afternoon at 1:00PM and she won't head back to work until 29 December. She's looking forward to having some time at home and I know she'll have plenty to do, with the video games/DVDs I've bought her as well as everyone else! Mr Green

If I get one or two DVDs, I'll be a happy camper and I really can't think of anything else I want or need......I'm quite easy to buy for, I think. Dad said he still wants to get me a thing or two on his own and I almost bet it might be Broncos related. Mr Green In spite of them breaking my heart, I still wear their colors, proudly. Last year, Dad got me two great Broncos caps to go with my other gifts and I wear them all the time.

We'll be shipping the package for Florida on Monday and that will be done and I'm shopping with my youngest brother on Wednesday, Carol on Friday and anyone else that wants me to shop with them, the other days! Mr Green

I feel the same way.....don't think of myself as older, but it shocks me sometimes to see and feel older changes coming through! My Grandmother had snowy white hair, as does my Dad and being a red-head, I think I'll go the snow white route, myself. I find myself hurting in places I never have before and there's been a time or two that I've been in the bathroom at the sink, say brushing my teeth and I look up in the mirror and see Mom looking back at me! freak out Now, Mom is a beautiful woman and I've never come one bit close to being attractive....I had to have the good fortune of NOT inheriting my Mom's looks, but sometimes I still see her staring back at me and that's freaky!

I do believe in the saying that you're only as old as you allow yourself to be and in my heart and head, I still think of myself as 20-25 and I still act like a kid, most of the time. I know my health problems add to some of my discomfort and such, but I refuse to grow old. Mr Green My body my age, but my spirit refuses to grow up or old. ;)

I think you're spot-on with that feeling, Lee. My Dad retired when he was just 55, I believe it was and that's because the company he worked for, was sold and there was no garauntee that salaried employees would be offered a position. Dad was a chemist and loved his work, but he took the buy-out, rather than gamble he might lose it all, if he weren't retained. Dad is now, 67, he'll be 68 in January and since his 'retirement', he's never really stopped working. He worked part time in the same plant I worked in, but he was in the labs.....he wanted 20 hours a week and that quickly became 40+, more than he wanted, so he left there and he's done a couple other positions, but for the past 10 years, he's worked in the Pro Shop of the local Country Club. He's received a ton of benefits at the club for doing so and he loves it, keeps him busy and he said he's simply not ready to retire, full time. This really doesn't surprise me, as when Dad was still working as a chemist at his original position, the plant would shut down for 2 weeks in July, every year and by the third day off, Dad was ready to go back to work! Of course, it may have been in part that we three kids were on Summer vacation and we were driving him nuts. ;)

Are there times, having worked in the industry for so long, that you don't notice the smells/odors, as much as someone walking past you might? The only smell I could never ignore, when still working was the smell from the rendering plant that was on the same premises as the processing plant. Woo-Hee! That was some nasty smell! cheeky sick smiley When the plant would provide holiday meals for us and the guys from the rendering plant would come over, we'd all shoo them away to eat at the rendering plant, just because we couldn't stand the smell of them! freak out

Does your place of employment provide 'work' clothes? I mean, do you have to wear a specific code of dress for your work? I know at the processing plant, we wore any of our own street clothes and when I first started working there, the entire plant was supplied with coveralls at the start of each shift. That was soon changed to the 'dressing' floor employees, the 'shipping/freezer' employees as well as maintenance employees being supplied with coveralls. The remaining departments, including my own, were supplied with 'smocks' or lab coats. They were long-sleeved and the length was to our knees, but it didn't offer the warmth or the coverage that coveralls did.

As I get older I have made a few determinations in my head about what I will try to be, even as I become an old geezer:

I will continue to work out, and keep exercise in my regimen, and I will not be overweight as I enter my 50's and 60's.

I will not smoke or use any other form of tobacco anymore. I quit in 11/1999 and I am never re-starting.

I will drink in moderation, or very lightly, as I get older, and the alcohol will be confined to the occasional beer, and not anything more potent like whiskey, or some other hard liquor.

I will not use drugs, of any kind, except those of a prescription or OTC variety, for either treatment of a malady or just for daily aches and pains.

Miscellaneous:

Baldness runs on my mother's side of the family and I have it. I accept it, no problem.

Like my dad I will probably be wearing partials(dentures) in my 60's and 70's. Like my dad, and regardless of my efforts, my teeth are getting worse-it's very gradual. The dentist I have gone to for years has told me that some people just don't have great teeth. I happen to be one of them.

I have slightly elevated cholesterol levels and chronic gout, both of which I will have to treat with medication, on a regular basis, as I get older.

My eyesight is also slowly going downhill-I am nearsighted and have mild astigmatism in one eye. The optometrist has told me this is common with many people, but that my prescription glasses will have to be strengthened every year or so as I get older.

I have mild arthritis in my hands, knees, and feet-a doctor assured me several years ago that none of these would incapacitate me, provided I exercised in a way that did pound my knees, and coupled with taking vitamins and such.

I suppose so. This question reminds me of the time, back in late 1995, when I was working at a large, family-owned plant nursery in NE Atlanta. One of my duties there included maintaining an outdoor shed(it was covered with a roof) that housed all of the organic landcsaping/gardening materials: pine straw, wheat straw, various potting mixes and soil amendments, peat moss and other varieties of bagged humus, in addition to various fertilizers, both man-made(granular) and natural(based on animal excrement). I was on the forklift moving pallets around when I had to stop to help load an order into a customer's car. The shed, because of it's contents, could get quite smelly,as you can imagine-after awhile I got used to it. The customer, a young female in her twenties, handed me her receipt, and I started to load the items she bought, including a pair of 40 lb bags of cow manure, into the trunk of her car. She said, while I was loading the bags: "That stuff smells like sh*t.". I replied, very casually: "It is, uh...sh*t.". After a moment she started howling with laughter. To this day I still don't know what I said to make her laugh so hard. crazy

Does your place of employment provide 'work' clothes? I mean, do you have to wear a specific code of dress for your work?
I have worked, in the past, for companies that require an employee to wear a complete uniform, that is, a company shirt, pants, sweat-top and winter jacket. Trugreen Landcare was one such company. Another company I worked for, Habersham Gardens, also provided mandatory shirts, caps, light and heavy jackets, and stipulated that work trousers must be khaki pants-no jeans of any kind, and also work boots or sturdy hiker-style boots. Tennis shoes and other athletic type footwear were not allowed. Habersham Gardens provided their uniforms for free, but each employee signed a contract when signing out their uniforms, and were required to turn them back in if they resigned or were laid off/fired-if they did not the company would withhold $ from their last paychecks commensurate with the dollar value of the uniforms they did not turn in. At Trugreen Landcare each employee was alloted a specific dollar amount of uniforms up front for free. After that additional uniform items would have to be paid for by the employee via small payroll deductions.

With my current employer, a small, family-owned landcape business, and the oldest in Atlanta, the only uniform provided is a couple of sweat tops and one cloth company cap. Obviously we are encouraged to wear sturdy trousers and work boots-me and my co-workers all wear, usually, khaki work pants, with cargo pockets, that are very heavy and durable. The colors of my trousers are mostly tan, dark brown, black or navy blue.

When it comes to footwear I only wear good quality workboots Kimi-I have worn Caterpillar and Wolverine boots, bought from Sears Roebuck-the models I buy are around $75 each and I usually wait until Sears has a "buy one get another at half off" sale to get two pairs at a time. I also wear Sears in-house brand on occasion, which runs around $40-50 a pair. On average I go through about two pairs of boots a year. I will not spend more than $100 on any pair of boots Kimi. Some time ago I bought a pair of $125 Wolverines...and wore them out in the same amount of time as the lesser priced models I usually buy. thumbs down

I'm not sure what the final amount is I've spent, but since I don't have a credit card, I don't worry, too much, as most of my shopping is done as I can afford it and through layaways. I know without a doubt, I spend too much, but it's a lot less than I used to spend, when I was still able to work. I will say, as much as I love Christmas and love to shop, some folks are getting much tougher to shop for. Santa

Sounds like you have a very positive outlook on aspects you have no real control over and a great attitude on aspects of life you do have more control over. thumbs up

I think that's a great defense against a lot of life's battles.....to simply accept what can't be changed, but to stay as positive as possible and things you have more control over, work hard at. With the health problems I have, many things I have no control over and I do try and stay as upbeat and positive as possible, but I will admit, I need to get a bit more serious about certain aspects of my health and sincerely hope to make thos positive changes in the New Year. tree

My Dad is a funny guy, though, he likes being free from work for a month or so, once the golf course shuts down, but after that, he's far too antsy and doesn't relax as much. My Granddad (Dad's Dad), was always busy, but Granddad was a wood-worker and artist, so even during the winter months, he could occupy himself with lots of little projects, Dad reads a lot, like Grandma, but puttering around isn't Dad's cup of tea. ;)

Ouch! Boot-buying isn't cheap, is it?! freak out When I was still working, rubber/steel-toed boots became mandatory, up to that point, steel-toed shoes of any kind were accepted, then the rubber/steel-toed boots became the must-have footwear. The company provided the boots at a minimal cost to us, they were deducted from our paycheck when we needed to purchase new boots. They came up to just below our knees and it was easy to hose yourself down with those, following a shift.....I was pleased that they didn't have that horrible, 'rubber-boot' smell to them, though. freak out

It's not if you want good quality boots. My feet, Kimi, can get very sore. I also have thin ankles, so I need boots that are durable and provide good support, as we often, at work, traverse over broken ground or through semi-wooded natural areas. I am willing to spend up to $100 on a pair of good work boots. Why not more? Two reasons: firstly, I have found that boots in the $75-100 range generally last as long as those that are well over $100. The other reason: I generally cannot afford it. tongue-1

That's a good tradition to NOT be carrying on, Lee. Hope you're able to keep any flu-like feelings at bay and enjoy your Christmas and time off. Santa

This morning and day kicks off what whould be a somewhat busy week! This is what the week is looking like, as I tap this out....

Monday

-Shipping Christmas package to Florida (Carol's Family)

-Taking my Mom to K-Mart to pick up her final layaway. She needs help, as she purchased my step-Dad one of those large.rolling tool chests, so Carol will help get that in/out of the vehicle.

-Perhaps doing a wee bit of baking, but time will tell!

Tuesday

-What isn't baked on Monday, may have to be finished on Tuesday.

Wednesday

-Shopping with my youngest brother. I think this is done as more of a tradition than him accomplishing much in the way of shopping! ;)

Thursday

-Running errands, finalizing the menu for Christmas Eve and cramming as much holiday viewing into the day as possible.

Friday

-Shopping for the ingredients/menu for our Christmas Eve get together.

Saturday

-Finishing last minute shopping and/or wrapping.

-Doing any light housekeeping that needs to be done.

-More holiday DVD viewing!

Sunday

-Get together with some of the family in the afternoon at the apartment.

-Trying to relax as much as possible and stretching my fingers for all the unwrapping that will take place, the following day! ;)

Very much like Dad! :) I like that quality in a person, actually. I was always the type that didn't like to, 'waste' a day off or vacation by simply sitting around and accomplishing nothing, so I was always on the go and doing something. I think both my parents are like that, although Mom does relax more, these days, because of her health issues, as do I, but if Carol is off and I have access to my vehicle, I like to go....go....go! :)

My Dad has said the same thing. He mainly used to get the work boots for his hunting days, but he'd spend more and he still has a pair or two that are in excellent shape! He quit hunting probably 20 years ago, but he wears the boots in winter and he cares for them, so they have lasted.

Having thin ankles, do your ankles tend to 'roll' over, much easier? That's extremely painful! freak out I also have to say, if your feet hurt, it makes you totally miserable, doesn't it? You just don't feel good...all over. :(

Yes. If I am not careful where, and how I walk, while on job sites, I can turn an ankle easily. Ironically I have had only one severe ankle sprain in my entire life-when I was 18, and in high school, I landed on a guy's foot while playing an outdoor pickup basketball game behind our high school. It was a bad sprain. My ankle ballooned up. I was on crutches for nearly a month, had my ankle in an ace bandage wrap for another month, and it was still sore for several more weeks even after that. It was called, by the doc, a "high" ankle sprain-it's a common injury in basketball and football and takes quite a while to heal-anywhere from 6-10 weeks. freak out

I have had many "twisted" or "turned" ankles over the years but fortunately they were all mild.

"KaijuFanatic"

I would agree with that. I heard this over and over again from customers when I worked in the footwear industry, for both Thom McAn and Florsheim Shoe Companies. Men in their thirties and older made "comfort" their main priority-younger men, teenaged and in their early twenties, usually cared more about how the shoes "looked".

I'm still seeing a pumpkin here and there still sitting on doorsteps at various homes in the neighborhoods we drive through during the work week. I wonder just how long a pumpkin can last on a person's porch before rotting and breaking down into compost or some other kind of decayed vegetable matter... crazy

Ouch, the high ankle sprain sounds both painful and annoying. freak out I used to sprain my ankles a lot and then buggered up my knee playing softball in high school, but thankfully, nothing serious enough to requite crutches or surgery.

I'd have to say, comfort has always been a BIG deal for me. Mr Green
