Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Mr Green

Not sure how or if anyone celebrates, but hope it's a pleasant and relaxing day for everyone. I'll be stuck in the apartment, it appears, thanks to the snow, but I'll lift a can of diet Pepsi in celebration of the day. Jimi

When I was in college I went, with several classmates, to Savannah, GA to celebrate St. Patty's Day. Predictably, our shenanigans included heavy consumption of beer and general partying until the overnight hours-it seemed, during one year when I went down there(1983?), like half the town had been transformed into wild drunkards, of which I was certainly one of them. Now, older and not so fond of being inebriated anymore, I usually celebrate by drinking a couple of beers and wearing a green shirt. <puts on green casual shirt> tongue-1

I remember drinking green beer a few years back. I drank way too much and started puking green vomit in the bathroom toilet at Denny's. ;)

cheeky sick smiley I've never been a drinker of alcohol and probably one of the main reasons is because of that memory of Ro-Dan's. tongue-1 I never seemed to acquire the taste for alcohol and I am not a fan of puking. ;)

While there are many notable holidays during each and every calendar year, such as Thanksgiving, Memorial day, Veteran's Day, and Christmas, I have always found Mother's Day to be very important as well. It is the one day during the year when everyone should go out of their way to show their mother how much they are appreciated, and loved. It was recently postulated at MSN.com that mothers across the world, with children to care for in the home, provide an accumulation of services in the process of being good moms that would command, in the private sector, a salary of roughly $140,000 a year. I think what good mothers do is, over the course of a lifetime, priceless.

For me, the care and attention my mother showed me certainly was, and I am still, and always will be, in her debt. Sadly, my mother is deceased. In the late fall of 1982 she began to experience severe pain in her abdomen. After resisting a visit to the doctor she finally went to see a physician. The diagnosis: stomach cancer. The doctors informed her it was terminal, already spreading into her bones, and into her blood. During the six months she lived after this diagnosis I watched as a proud, physically tough, outspoken, and headstrong woman was reduced to a feeble shadow of her former self, the chemotherapy taking its toll on her, both physically and mentally. Not once did she ever complain, and she carried herself through her last six months with a quiet bravery and dignity. Though I wanted to take a semester off from college(I was a junior at The Citadel) my mother forbade me from doing so. "You have a job to finish, and that's getting your schoolwork done, so you can graduate on time," she told me several times. So I went back to school. In May of 1983 I received a call from my father, who informed me that my mother had died. The wake and subsequent funeral happened in the span of a single weekend. I was granted emergency leave from college-about a hundred of my classmates pitched in with $ and bought a huge wreath, which was sent to the church where her funeral was held. After the funeral I went back to college for a week, took all of my final exams(even though I was told I could take them later in the fall) and came back home. It was a hard summer on me, but even harder on my father, who had lost his wife, and companion of over forty years. I can say without hesitation that I loved my mother more than any person I have ever known. She was the hardest working, most unselfish, and most giving person I ever saw, both demanding of herself, and her children. Both of my parents were people who did not, as a rule, show affection very often. They were both mannered, polite, cultured, intelligent, hard-working, and each possessing their own kind of sense of humor. They both believed in a good work ethic, accountability, and responsibility. Looking back on things I wish I had shown more affection to my mother, even though her response might have been muted, as it often was. On weeknights I would always give her a peck on the cheek before going upstairs to bed, her response a barely discernible nod of her head. She would remain up to watch The Tonight Show, because she was a huge Johnny Carson fan. I hope all of you who still have your moms will take the opportunity, and the time, to tell your mother how much you love her, and how much you appreciate who she is, and what she does, for you. Don't put it off, because if you do, there may come a day, God forbid, when it will be too late. Thank God I was able to say this to my mom before she passed. I often wonder if it was enough for her. There are still times, even now, when I could curse myself for not doing it more often. I still miss my mother, twenty-four years after her death.

I would like to encourage members of this site to use this thread to pay tribute to your mothers, whether they are still with us, or not. I will close this thread a day or two after Mother's Day, which falls on Sunday, May 13th, which is a week from tomorrow. All replies welcome. :)

Ruth Merritt, 1913-1983 Rest In Peace :(

Great tribute to your Mom, Lee.

I feel very much the same way about my Mom. She's an amazing woman, she has my heart and my love each and every day that I'm here to give it. Mom was born to very young parents, her Mom and Dad were 13 and 16 when they married and began having a family a year later. Mom said that her Mom wasn't the kind to show affection and Mom made a promise to herself that if she was lucky enough to have children, they'd always feel very loved. Mom struggled to carry children, she and Dad lost a baby girl 9 months and 10 days before I was born! My sister was very premature and lived just 2 hours before passing away. Mom and Dad lost a baby boy when I was three, he developed a quick pneumonia and passed away three days after his birth.....he was born on Mom's birthday. Mom and Dad adopted my brother, Michael and four years later, Mom gave birth to my youngest brother, Skeet. Mom was always hugging, kissing and telling us how much she loved us and as a result, both my brothers and I tend to be demonstrative with our affection.

When Mom and Dad divorced back in '78, I was 13, Michael not quite 8 and Skeet not yet 3, but Mom rented a home and did her very best to get us through that difficult period. Mom remarried and her new husband was a raging alcoholic, she told me later that she always felt her love would be enough to help him stop drinking. It wasn't and he was abusive, mentally and physically to Mom. It took six years, but Mom's love and ultimatum of him choosing her or drinking finally got through and he stopped drinking and hasn't touched alcohol since that last day.

Mom is now 62 and when most women that age are enjoying the early stages of retirement, Mom is raising three grandchildren. She began raising grandchildren in 2003 and at one time, had five living with her, she's now down to three. She retired in June of last year, but there's no slowing down for her. She's now busy taking kids to baseball practice, games, Girl Scouts and trying to be both a Mom and Grandmother and I see how difficult that is for her. She has the support of my step-Dad, but Mom is the driving force behind raising these kids and seeing to the majority of their needs.

I can't imagine my world without my Mom. Her health hasn't been the best in the past several years and we nearly lost her a couple of times, last Summer. The thought of Mom not being here, terrifies me, not just because she's my Mom, but she's also my best friend. She's loved me without limitations, she's supported me through my own health issues, she's made me laugh and she's made me proud to point her out in a crowd and declare, 'That's my Mom!'.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Thanks, Lee. :)

I'd also like to take a minute to honor my Grandmothers. My paternal Grandmother passed away in 1994, but she was an amazing woman and someone who made me feel very special and very loved, every day of my life. She was amazing.....she was well read...she read two or three books at a time and the county bookmobile actually stopped at Grandma and Granddad's house, something they didn't do for anyone else, because Grandma did read so much. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was just a genuinely great person. I miss her every day and think of her on a daily basis. For my own selfish reasons, I wish she was still with us, but she's no longer suffering and I have wonderful memories to hold dear. Happy Mother's Day, Grandma!

Betty Davis--1918-1994

My maternal Grandmother and I have a very unique relationship...we joke, laugh and occasionally butt-heads, but I love her, dearly. I know that no matter the time of day, if I pick up the phone and call her, she's always willing to talk and if I needed her, she'd be there for me in a heartbeat. She's opinionated, protective of those she loves and a wonderful cook/baker. Happy Mother's Day, GB!

Though selfishness, and the word "selfish" generally have a negative connotation I believe that, when it comes to those of us who miss our deceased friends and family, the word and it's connotation is understandable, and completely acceptable. :)

From your description of your maternal grandmother it sounds like she was a tremendous person. thumbs up

I do feel I have been very blessed with the women in my life. Grandma Davis was just an amazing woman and I miss her every day. GB is something special and I'm grateful to have her still in my life. Mom, she goes without saying and I lived with my great-Aunt and great-Uncle when I was 15 through the age of 21 and she is also a very special lady. I have several Aunts that are near and dear to me and even my female cousins are special. 1 feel very lucky to have the family I do. We certainly aren't anything close to perfect, but we are a family. :)

My brother, Michael, is out of the state, working on a job in Indiana and he called to wish her a HMD, my youngest brother, Skeet also called and talked to Mom, but I don't think either sent Mom anything. Michael said when he returns home, following this electrical job he's working on, he's going to take her out and let her do some shopping. I got Mom a bouquet of flowers and had to give it to her on Saturday, as we had my niece's birthday party and the shop couldn't guarantee they'd deliver before Momw as gone for the day. She seemed thrilled with them. :)

Sunday, she took my niece and two nephews to the ballpark in town and Carol and I went up and kept her company while the kids played. Afterwards, we all went out for ice cream, so I think she had a relaxing day, overall. :)

Yes, it's the town field, being a small area, it is used by the baseball and softball teams in the Summer as well as the place where the volunteer firemen hold their annual carnival for fund-raising. I played baseball on the same field when I was a young one, before they began softball teams for the girls!

Memorial Day, for me, is always a time to reflect on those American servicemen and servicewomen who have lost their lives in the service of this country. I often have to stop and remind myself that it's also about those in uniform serving in our allies' nations as well. I hope everyone reading this post will take a moment to stop and reflect on those in uniform that never returned home. Know someone on active duty? A friend or family member? Make time to say "thanks" to them. In my opinion they deserve it, and I know they would appreciate it. For anyone who has a friend or family member in the military, talk about what they do, and anything else you might want to mention about Memorial Day. I'll leave this thread open for about a week.
God Bless those servicemen and servicewomen of all democratic nations who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, God Bless those in uniform serving here and abroad(Iraq and Iran), and finally, God Bless the United States Of America and her allies.

I've had several family members as well as friends that have served in the military....my Dad said it was the best time of his life, actually. My Grandpa Repsher served during WWII as as did a great-Uncle and several other family members. I had a cousin that was killed in action in Vietnam and have always felt a strong sense of gratitude for all service men and women. So, to family, friends as well as those service folks I have never known or meant, I say, 'Thanks'.

Another apsect of Memorial Day for me has been going around to various cemeteries where family members are buried and planting flowers around the graves. I went this morning with my Dad to put flowers on Grandma, Granddad and my brother, Clarke David's grave as well as to my Grandpa Repsher's, sister Michelle Lynn's and great-Grandmothers grave.

This afternoon, Carol, my Mom, nephew Branden and I went around to some of the same graves as well as others.

Dad was in the Army. I can't for the life of me recall his years of service, I want to say, '61-64, but that may be off. By the time the U.S. was becoming very involved in Vietnam, Dad was an MP and wanted to go with the unit he originally was with, so headed over to sign up with that unit and the draft was re-institued, so Dad wasn't sent. My Uncle and a cousin, who wasn't killed, both saw combat in Vietnam and as a result, my Uncle won't fly, as he was in choppers a lot and flying along the tree tops did him in for wanting to fly, after that.

My great-Uncle was in the Air Force....well, during WWII, I don't know if the Air Force was officially called that, but he served in Europe. My Grandpa Repsher was a Seabee in the South Pacific during WW!!. I have a great-Aunt that served as a nurse in a MASH unit during the Korean War. She met her husband while setrving and at one point, out-ranked him.

During non-war times, I've had several cousins serve in the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force and they've lived in Korea, Italy, Germany and the UK.

During World War II it was referred to as the Army Air Corps. :)

thumbs up MASH units(Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals) work was some of the most demanding jobs in the Korean War, and thank God for the people who worked in them.

These guys, the "Seabees", Naval personnel who worked in construction battalions, spent lots of time building airplane runways, clearing trees, and other grading/excavation/earth removal work that was vitally important to the success of our armed forces, in both the Pacific and European theaters of WWII. thumbs up

The "draft" you refer to was called(and would be again if it were ever re-instituted) selective service. There has been some debate over when the United States actually became involved, militarily, in Vietnam. I have read books and articles that have stated that the U.S. had specially trained soldiers working covertly in Vietnam as early as 1962. Many of these military personnel were allegedly the early U.S. Navy 'frogmen", graduates of the Navy's "frogmen" school, created in 1962 at the behest of (then) President John F. Kennedy. These "frogmen" were the early precursors to today's U.S. Navy SEALS. The U.S.'s first major conventional military force was deployed to Vietnam in 1965-the movie We Were Soldiers(starring Mel Gibson) is based on this deployment, and the experiences, of this unit as they engage the N. Vietnamese forces in battle for the very first time. Was your father bypassed for the draft because of his age? heyo

I'm not really sure, to be honest. Dad was born in '39, so age might have been a factor. He said he was more than ready to sign up with his unit for deployment, but the draft went into affect and he never was called up following his discharge.

If your father was born in 1939 then he would have been in his mid twenties(or a couple of years older) when the draft was instituted. I cannot remember the year of that draft-I'm thinking it came into effect during either 1965 or 1966. Does this sound right?
It would not have been your father's age that prevented the Army for sending him back out into the field. Did he have any kind of medical condition that would have disqualified him from further service? If not, then I'm at a loss as to why the Army would have denied him further service. On the plus side, he wasn't sent back out and into a region, and into a war, that ended up claiming thousands of U.S. soldiers and scarring a large segment of young men in our country-I say this with absolutely no disrespect intended to the memories of those men and women who served in Southeast Asia and never made it back. :(
