1965 or 1966 may be correct, I was born in '65 and don't know if Dad was active in the service then, I don't believe he was. I'll have to ask him, he may have served his time and been discharged and perhaps with me being around, he may not have volunteered, since the draft had been instituted?

I did a little digging and found that the "draft" for the Vietman War took place in 1967. For more info on the history of selective service in the United States click the link:

I'll definitely get both Dad and Jim something, but don't ask me what! ;) It's tough enough buying them anything for Christmas and a birthday that one more gift-giving event is very tough. :(

Good idea. If Dad gets a home, he probably could use a gift card for fixing up a place. Jim, I may get him a gift certificate for a restaraunt, as he loves eating out every day and every meal, if you let him. Mr Green

Yes, I don't know how he does it. Mom is a great cook, but Jim likes to eat out and the kids are kind of picky, espeically my nephew, Branden. Mom just kind of gave up on cooking for them all. :(

Nor was I. I had to at least try things....I wasn't forced to eat everything I didn't like, but I had to at least try it. Seems many kids these days spend their evenings snacking on anything and everythng. When I was a kid, once dinner was over, we usually didn't eat again until breakfast, the next morning. A HUGE treat for us was, Jiffy Pop Popcorn! Mr Green

True and kids go to the dentist now with 10 or 11 cavities! freak out What REALLY bothered me, when Mom and Jim first took in my nieces and nephews, their Mom was on an assistance program....she received $600 or $700 a month just for groceries, free dental, free prescriptions, free Dr visits and free dental visits and her kids still came with a mouth-full of cavities! very angry I mean, how lazy and uncaring is that, when you get it for free and you still don't take advantage of it?! very angry

It may very well be called that, Lee, most people in this area have always called it, welfare. I don't have one bit of trouble with anyone receiving help, when they are working to support themselves and their family and still can't make it, but dammit, I worked for almost 15 years and when I became unable to work because of several health issues, I couldn't get one bit of help. There was my sister-in-law and at the time, my brother, sitting on their behinds, not even trying to hold down a job and popping kids out every year. I worked with several single Moms and Dads who worked 60+ hours a week and needed help, but they never 'qualified', either.

The same goes for down here in Atlanta, GA-in fact "Section 8" housing assistance is often referred to by many as welfare-just like AFDC there are those that use the assistance properly, and those who simply rely on it as a way of life.

I understand and I agree. I once knew a person(a female) who was on and off of AFDC for several years. She was a single mother-she got pregnant after a one night stand with some guy she met at a work-related convention. The guy had little interest in taking any responsibility for the little girl and when my friend tried to find him, presumably to try and compel him to pay child support(through court action), he had vanished off the face of the earth. She took on the responsibility of raising her daughter alone-her salary as a cell phone salesperson, at a time when cell phones were still "catching on"(in 1991 and 1992) was modest, to say the least(about $10/hr)-when she couldn't make ends meet she applied for, and received AFDC, in the form of a monthly check. I forget the amount(it was somewhere between $400-500 a month). It did help her, but everytime she got a second job(delivering pizzas for Dominos) her county AFDC assigned caseworker(recipients of AFDC all have an assigned case #) would cut off her payments, because she had gone over the maximum amount of monthly income allowed to still receive an AFDC check. She would have to quit her second job, which was her way of trying to help herself income-wise, in order to reactivate her receipt of the AFDC checks. Her caseworker actually came to visit my old friend at her apartment once while I was there, setting up her Christmas tree and doing some minor maintenance on her Honda Civic(oil and oil filter change). Her AFDC caseworker seemed polite enough, but was a typical bureaucrat, her words sounding as if they had been rehearsed and were being read off an index card. In case you're wondering Kimi(or even if you're not tongue-1) my female friend ended up marrying a marvelous guy and they moved to Texas-they have had more children and seemed happy and financially stable the last time I corresponded with them, back in 2000. thumbs up

There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for a couple, married, common-law, or simply living together, to have children when neither is gainfully employed. PERIOD. Those couples producing kids at a time when they are unemployed are, IMO, completely irresponsible.

And that's part of what is wrong with the 'system", Kimi: assistance is based too much on $ as the predominant criteria, and less on other factors. Exascerbating this is the fact that there are too many people that rely on government assistance as their only means of income, to get by in life. And that's just those people who simply don't want to find a regular, salaried, or hourly job. There is also a great many people who are low income(or no income) who will swindle the government at their first opportunity. Example: the Katrina disaster: amid the heroism and charity that resulted from this disaster that beset New Orleans was the revelation, based on the GAO, Government Accounting Office, that as much as $500 million dollars, that is, our tax dollars, had been misused by those applying for assistance. This $ was used to buy guns, pay for vacations and weddings, clothes, and other material things that had nothing whatsoever to do with trying to rebuild and relocate after the disaster. In hundreds of instances FEMA(Federal Emergency Management Agency) issued checks to the same people two, even three times over, because these individuals had provided false social security numbers. To be sure FEMA failed miserably at accounting for its own $ disbursements, and its own accounting failures were justifiably blasted by the GAO. No doubt that in hindsight FEMA was ill prepared for a disaster like hurricane Katrina. Still, that does not justify people obtaining $ under fraudulent pretenses from the government. PERIOD.
My belief has always been, and it's just my opinion, that too many low income people in this country have an "entitlement" mentality: they believe that they are "owed" something from our government, and that should they become unable to pay their own bills that "Uncle Sam" has an obligation to "take care of them." Don't believe me? Watch some episodes of The Jerry Springer Show, or even an episode or two of The Maury Povich Show, the latter when he has an episode involving paternity test results. The Jerry Springer Show has had scores of young women on who are determined to have babies, even though their current income situation doesn't warrant it. "The government'll take care of me, mama," one woman said on a Springer episode once. I became so angry at her comment that I wanted to throw the TV set out the goddamn window. I was absolutely appalled at how many young women, appearing on Maury Povich's show, were becoming pregnant despite the fact they weren't working, or were and had relatively low-paying jobs.

My take on our government in relation to me paying my own way: "It is my responsiblity, and mine alone, to take care of my bills and pay my own way in life. I alone am responsible for keeping myself gainfully employed. Government assistance programs are there for me, as a last resort, and are a means of aiding me, on a short term, temporary basis and is not a substitute for a regular paying job. With the exception of Social Security, the government of this country owes me nothing."

Sorry for the rambling, Kimi, but this topic can be a sore point for me sometimes. shifty eyes

No need to apologize, Lee, I get plenty riled up myself, too. I tend to be a bit bitter that I was forced to go through my checking, savings and 401k while I was awaiting my disability determination. I was told, once you have used your finances, we will step in and help.....didn't happen and if it wasn't for the generosity of my family, I'd have been on the street. crazed

There's talk down here in Atlanta(GA) that any scheduled fireworks may be cancelled because of how dry it is down here, from lack of rainfall. thumbs down

Barbecued Chicken
Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers
Hot Dogs
Hot Sausage/Sweet Sausage
Potato Salad
Macaroni Salad
Pasta Salad
Taco Salad
Broccoli Salad
Veggie Platters
Watermelon
Brownies
Chocolate Cake w/Peanut Butter Frosting
Yellow Cake w/ Cream Cheese Frosting
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Sugar Cookies

Probably tons more, but it's been a while since I've attended. One thing I know, you'd never starve at one of our family functions. ;)

My family has always cooked enough of everything for a small army, which, I guess our family slightly resembles. :) Just being around my family can crack me up, we always have a lot of fun and obviously, we eat well. ;)

We have had small amounts of rain, but a good two or three day steady rain would do this area a lot of good. Betsy and Pami's husbands always put on a fireworks show for us at the end of the day, but that may not happen, this year, since it is so dry and the risk of fire is too great.

I have never been a fan of fireworks, Kimi. Yes, many varieties can be very cool to watch, especially sparklers. My dislike for fireworks is borne out of the fact that far too many people don't respect fireworks and also because they are, for better or worse, unpredictably dangerous, especially firecrackers, M80's, which are sometimes referred to as "smoke bombs", and bottle rockets. Fireworks, after all, are partially comprised of black powder and related variations of this powder. An M80 is little more than a miniatured smoke grenade. The fuses on common firecrackers rarely burn consistently, which means that many will burn more quickly than others, which is why there are the occasional accidents-those handling firecrackers do not release them quickly enough, and the firecracker explodes in the user's hand, with sometimes catastrophic results. As a kid I heard of a middle school classmate who lived down the block from me whose thumb was partially blown off by a prematurely igniting firecracker. There have also been reported incidents of bottle rockets launching into people, causing burns and other injuries. To me fireworks should only be handled by companies that specialize in their storage, upkeep, and handling. I would not be bothered a bit if fireworks were banned in every state of this country.

Sparklers are not as potentially dangerous as other types of fireworks because they do not utilize an accelerant(e.g. black powder)-still, they are to be respected, and never lit around anything flammable. shifty eyes
