For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Sparklers are not as potentially dangerous as other types of fireworks because they do not utilize an accelerant(e.g. black powder)-still, they are to be respected, and never lit around anything flammable.

I think I must have been an odd kid. I did enjoy them, but was always a wee bit nervous about the 'sparks' landing on me and burning me. My cousins would be whooping it up and dashing all over with their sparklers....me, I stood in one spot. nod

I was the same way with sparklers. :)

You won't catch me around fireworks, KImi. Now I do enjoy watching the fireworks show at a nearby mall every 4th of July-again, the show is performed by a company specializing in the usage of fireworks, which IMO should be the only people, legally, that handle them.

:) Nice to know I had a fellow sparkler fan that just kind of stood there and enjoyed the moment, but worride slightly about being burned.

Our local volunteer fire-company, holds a yearly canival and on that Friday night, they put on an amazing fireworks show. If, I'm abble to attend it, as they usually begin around 11:00PM, I do enjoy it. They light the fireworks in an area probably 100 yards or more from the carnival population and they stop all rides during that time.

For really large shows like the one I watch every year at the nearby giant mall the distance is even greater, for safety reasons.
Trivia: fireworks, Kimi, were invented and first used by the Chinese. shifty eyes

I have the 4th of July off, but it falls on a Wednesday. I'll be back at work for Thursday and Friday, per the boss. <_<

I hate it when a holiday falls on the middle day of the work week. thumbs down

I always hated that, too....made the week seem incredibly long. As it was,our department usually ended up working a lot of holidays, especially Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, anyway.

With our business being slow, what with the drought down here and all, we definitely won't work on the 4th of July. Atlanta's current water deficit is more than 12 inches, this despite some on/off rain we got during various days/nights of last week. freak out
The watering restrictions, imposed by the city of Atlanta on residential home owners: one day of watering is allowed, on Saturdays(even numbered addresses) and Sundays(odd numbered addresses). Businesses whose use of water is critical to their day to day ops are exempt(restaurants & nurseries for example).

I know this area is in real need of some rain, as well. While at the state park on Friday, Mom and I wandered down to where Carol had the kids fishing and you could hear the grass cracking and snapping as we walked across it. freak out Any rain we've gooten, lately, lasts no more than 10 minutes and then the sun is right back out, again. Not sure how down we are for rain totals, but I know a few days of a nice, steady, easy rain, couldn't hurt a bit.

For the Fourth Of July I think I might do some early house cleaning and then settle in to watch some DVDs. My girlfriend will be leaving town the day before to spend time with relatives out of town so I'll have to entertain myself with movies, I guess. Horror or giant monster movies, Kimi. Which one would you suggest? heyo

Hmmm....tough question, if it were me, I'd probably do a combination of both. A couple of good horror films, followed by a couple giant beastie films....just to keep things interesting. Mr Green

Well, as the Fourth Of July approaches, so does my dreaded scheduled cleaning of my residence interior. Everything is on the list: the floors, the refrigerator, the microwave, the bathroom( freak out ), and the kitchen area in general(counter tops). How often, Kimi, do you clean your residence? heyo

Because the driveway leading down to the complex isn't paved, the dust is terrible, so I dust at least twice a week and in all honesty, could probably dust every day. I vacuum a couple times a week and scour the bathroom a couple times a week as well. The bathroom and kitchen have to be swept at least once a day, if not more and Carol and I both agree, we need to do some deep-down cleaning and mop, this week. As mentioned in the past, HB is a long-haired cat and I swear, I sit down and can watch a clump of his hair roll across the floor like tumbleweed! Also, his litter box is in the bathroom and he can't seem to get out of it like a normal cat, he dashes out of it and flings litter all over the place! I cannot stand stepping on litter, so I probably sweep the bathroom three or four times a day, bitching at HB every time. tongue-1

I don't think any time soon. Rumors are, he isn't pleased with the state of the complex at all. As mentioned, the deal seemed to happen very quickly and in fact, we residents weren't even informed by the old landlord of the sale. I believe it was done without the benefit of any inspection at all, so more problems than the new owners bargained for.

There's only be a couple of instances where HB brought out with him, something that should have stayed behind. I carry one, but Carol said he doesn't mean to, you can see he's hiding. cheeky sick smiley

Which makes me wonder why he bought the complex to begin with. Does he own other real estate? Other apartments? Usually landlords are looking to make $ for themselves, so the more $ he spends on your complex the more the tenants are going to pay in rent.

To be honest, I don't know if he owns any other properties, but can you believe it, last night, Carol and I were making a tossed salad to take to Mom's for part of the dinner and someone rang the doorbell.....it was the landlord, asking if we'd mailed out our rent, yet?! very angry Now, I explained to him, the first month that we paid him rent, when he knocked at the door, that I get paid a Social Security disability check, once a month and always on the third. I explained that by the time I pay bills, including rent, car payment, car insurance as well as helping out with other household bills, come the end of the month, I'm on poor street, so I cannot possibly give my half of the rent, again, until the 3rd. His answer the first time, I could post date a check! I refuse to do that and my gosh, yesterday was only the second day of the month.....the first having fallen on a Sunday! I had the check made out and in an addressed envelope and Carol simply opened the door and he asked if we'd mailed it and she just handed it to him.

Now, last week, he had to replace a stove and fridge in the downstairs apartment, so I think our rent check bought either the stove or fridge. crazed Obviously, I don't mind paying rent, but I don't like a landlord knocking on the door on the second day of the month, when I've explained, I will mail it out the day my check is in the bank. That just pisses me off, to be perfectly vulgar. Carol and I meet my Dad at the house he's purchasing, this afternoon.....it's being inspected and if all goes well, Dad will take it....me, I'll take extreme pleasure in telling this landlord we will be moving out, hopefully by the end of August. Which is why I would just maintain a level head regarding your current landlord. You'll only have to pay him, hopefully, rent for one more month(in August) then you're out the door. Make sure you're move is a sure thing before you give him notice, which I'm sure you'll do. :)

Well, we went to see the hosue for the first time, yesterday, while Dad and the inspector were there. We love the location and the outside needs nothing more than a pressure washing, but lordy, the inside is in serious need of some cosmetic work. With a few things the inspector found, I'm not sure what Dad will do, he's got a great poker face and didn't let anything on to anyone and I haven't heard from him, today, so we'll see how he feels in a day or two.

I hope we do end up moving, but not sure Dad is up for all the work needed on the inside. :(

-Some electrical work, the entire house doesn't need to be done, as it was started, but not completely finished.

-New flooring in the kitchen and Dad wants the carpet up in the living room, but not sure what state the wood floors are in.

-Seems most of the ceilings are 'drop' ceilings...I hate those. Not sure what the original ceiling must be like, but we'd want to fix those.

-A beam needs to be put in the width of the kitchen, as some work was done in the ceiling, but no beam was there and as a result, the one wall of an upstairs bedroom appears to have pulled away from the floor.

-There is a small leak in the roof, which was discovered in the attic, they are aware of it, as a pan was placed in the attic to catch the water.

-There is a hideous carpet running through much of the upstairs that Dad eventually wants to pull up.

-Most of the downstairs is wood panel and Dad doesn't like that, but until he can replace it, I think we could paint it white, to brighten it up.

-Going upstairs, they began to put a light-colored paneling in, but stopped about halfway and then appeared to paint wallpaper and that is cracking, so it needs to be stripped and repainted or something.

-The kitchen is very large, but quite dated and will eventually need new cabinets and counter-tops, but most of the real work is cosmetic, I guess.

Dad should receive the inspectors final specs by tomorrow and I won't be surprised if Dad doesn't ask for some things to be done....roof and such or ask for a price reduction, so he can have them done.

I love the location, it's perfect, but the cosmetic work is daunting to me, as I'm not handy and Dad isn't all that handy, so money will play into that, big time. Carol and I can paint and such to help defray costs, but some of it, we simply can't do.

Any electrical work should be done only by a licensed and insured electrician. No exceptions.

"KaijuFanatic"

New flooring in the kitchen and Dad wants the carpet up in the living room, but not sure what state the wood floors are in
New flooring in the kitchen could be something done by yourselves or a handyman, depending on what kind of flooring you want. I have assisted on two floor jobs in kitchens-it's a grind but can be a "do it your self'er" type job. Same for carpet removal. Hopefully the floors beneath them are in decent shape.

"KaijuFanatic"

A beam needs to be put in the width of the kitchen, as some work was done in the ceiling, but no beam was there and as a result, the one wall of an upstairs bedroom appears to have pulled away from the floor
Again, this could be done by someone with a fairly good familiarity of carpentry or related.

"KaijuFanatic"

There is a small leak in the roof, which was discovered in the attic, they are aware of it, as a pan was placed in the attic to catch the water
This problem is the responsibility of the seller, as you inferred. They should fix it.

"KaijuFanatic"

Most of the downstairs is wood panel and Dad doesn't like that, but until he can replace it, I think we could paint it white, to brighten it up
You and Carol could handle the painting...right?

"KaijuFanatic"

Going upstairs, they began to put a light-colored paneling in, but stopped about halfway and then appeared to paint wallpaper and that is cracking, so it needs to be stripped and repainted or something
Again, this could be done by you, roommate and father, but it's messy work.

"KaijuFanatic"

The kitchen is very large, but quite dated and will eventually need new cabinets and counter-tops, but most of the real work is cosmetic, I guess
I worked on a job back in 2003 with a cabinet maker-it's tricky and there's little room for error. Best to leave this to a professional cabinet installer. Same with counter tops.

Summary: the electrical work needed and the leaky roof are what I would be most concerned about at first. As for the rest of what you describe, it sounds like nothing that couldn't be done, and finished, over the course of 6 months-a year, depending on your budgets and time restraints. :)

Dad won't even screw a new lightbulb in too often. ;) He doesn't like fooling with electricity at all, so no threat of him fooling with that. I think Dad has checked into Lowe's for possible tile replacement and I'm not sure, but do they offer installation at an additional cost?

Mom and I were talking, this morning and as I told her, Carol and I are more than willing to do antyhing we can to help....paint, whatever, Carol is actually handy at putting things together and such, so I'm sure she could be a bigger help than I could hope to be.

Dad's brother bought a home several years ago and he did all the work inside, himself, but Dad and his family are a little different, they don't ask much of each other, so probably as good of help as my Uncle could be, Dad would never ask for help. Skeet is quite handy and has done a lot of work at his place along with several of his friends, so that could be another avenue of help, I suppose.

I don't know. I do know that Home Depot does. A guy I used to work with periodically on odd jobs is now employed by Home Depot as a carpet/hardwood floor installer. He bought a step van, his own tools, and went to work for HD as an independent carpet/floor installer contractor. My bet is Lowe's employs people to do this work also-bear in mind that they are probably independent contractors, and not actual Lowe's(or Home Depot) employees. :)
