AMC has really stepped it up this year. They've been playing a lot of horror films. Heck, THE WOLFMAN was on this morning.

Be on the lookout, everyone: SHAUN OF THE DEAD is on Comedy Central tonight at 9pm!

Perhaps Dan, but I still think they should broadcast their movies in their original theatrical format, and without the commercials, as TCM does. I doubt they will ever go back to their old ways though.

Yeah, didn't AMC used to be commercial-free back in the day? I remember my dad used to always tape old black-and-white movies. It was his favorite channel. Now that they've started to play newer films he doesn't bother with it.

Yeah, didn't AMC used to be commercial-free back in the day?  I remember my dad used to always tape old black-and-white movies. It was his favorite channel.

Kimi and I discussed when we thought AMC made the switch from commercial-free movie broadcasts to the current format, which does include advertisements. I found a wikipedia article on AMC but it did not specify the exact year, only that the change reflected the new owners of the channel-the change happened after AMC was bought by a new group of people. We both think it happened in either 1999 or 2000. I know that during the Monsterfest of 1999 I taped a lot of commercial-free movies to VHS, including Frankenstein Conquers The World, The Alligator People, and The Curse Of The Werewolf. The current owners of AMC can argue any position they want as to why they switched, but I'm not buying it. It comes down to $, and the new owners wanted more of it, and one quick way to increase the immediate bottom line is to increase the commercials. To add insult to injury AMC shows virtually all of their film inventory in pan and scan(full frame) format. There was also mention in the wikepedia article, Dan, that the new owners of AMC wanted to get this cable channel away from being identified as a primarily "movie" channel(like TCM), and more of a general, contemporary, "mainstream" channel. Maybe they succeeded. Hell if I know, though I do know this: I rarely watch AMC anymore. I watch parts of "Monsterfest" and that's it. eyebrow

Thanks for the AMC info! Regarding your reaction to the channel's change I'm actually the opposite, Lee. I watch AMC probably more than any other cable channel nowadays. The commercials don't really bother me and I prefer the more contemporary film library that they've been showing. Luckily there is a TCM to fill the void left by AMC's restructuring.

And thank God for that. If I want to watch more contemporary film fare I watch FX, TNT, USA, or SPIKE TV channels. IMO AMC's new owners have, presuming that their stated intention of changing the public's perception of this channel is true, done a subpar job of it. Most of the internet comments I read about AMC are generally negative, and not because of the commercials or the full-frame movie formats either. The criticism is usually aimed at AMC's overall programming. From a viewing perspective I would rank AMC in the middle of the pack, among all the cable channels. I'd take AMC anyday over channels like Oxygen and Lifetime, two channels clearly made for female viewers. My girlfriend likes these two cable channels, not surprisingly. tongue-1

I think another reason, Kimi, is to make buying these TV series a little easier for working class people like myself, and for people like you, who are in a kind of fixed income situation. I remember buying the first season of Lost In Space(1965-1968) a few years ago-it was sold as the entire first season, and it set me back well over $80. It would have been easier on my wallet then, and now, to buy that first season in two installments(two "volumes") @ $40 than to unload the $80 all at once. After that first season the rest of the LIS episodes were changed to sale by volumes(two per season) for the rest of the way. I prefer splitting up these TV series into volumes, Kimi, but only because it is easier for me to buy them that way.

Good point, Lee. I know I need all the help I can get when attempting to purchase these series! I found, the entire first season of, Lost In Space at a GameStop and paid just under $25 for it!

Oh, by the way, Lee, outstanding new avatar! thumbs up freak out

Based on the introduction that Rob Zombie did for, Night of the Living dead, I think he'll fit in bicely at TCM. Mr Green

AMC has been showing a ton of the Universal classics....I would see them as I was channel surfing. I fully understand that you need to cater to fans of classic films as well as fans of more modern efforts, but in my own and very humble opinion, I feel AMC really dropped the ball for classic fans. I don't really see where the market was flooded with channels geared towards classic film fans, I think AMC and TCM could have made for a great double punch, if both continued to offer classic films and a commercial-free format.

What I;d dearly love to have on my cable system is, Monster HD. Now, mind you, I don't have an HDTV, but if anyone has checked out their monthly line-up, they really do a nice mixture of both classic and modern horror efforts. thumbs up

Forgot to mention, we had Trick-or-Treat in this area on Saturday night. It was a perfect night for it, too....very windy and chilly and it just 'felt' like kids should be out begging for candy. :D

Carol worked on her costume all evening, Friday until 3:00AM on Saturday morning! I helped some with the blood spattering....she dressed as a Zombie Dr and the final effect was quite good!

Our first kids arrived promptly at 6:00PM and we had quite a few come in bunches, including two van fulls of my cousins and their kids and a grandchild! Some pretty neat costumes, but by the time my Mom and Jim brought my niece and nephew down, things had really slowed down and we finally closed up shop at 7:30PM, so Carol could go to my Grandmother's to show off her costume.

I think part of the reason we see so few people in comparison to my Grandmother, who lives on the same street is, the four-unit apartment complex sits down off the road and many people don't even realize there's a house down here. I told Carol, next year, she'll have to sit up on the street and dole out candy. Mr Green

What are you going to watch on Halloween night(Tuesday)?

Thread starter: I'll warm up tonight by watching The Exorcist(1973) and The Haunting(1963). Tomorrow night, I will be watching House Of Wax(1953) and The Howling(1981).

Note: after Halloween I will be merging this topic with "Halloween Trick or Treat". :)

EXACTLY!!!!! Why would AMC's new owners want to try and transform this channel into something more contemporary when there are already a gazillion cable channels already around that are exactly that? IMO AMC now just kind of "blends" in with the rest of the average cable channels I surf, and mostly skip over. TCM stands out, because it shows it's films commercial free and in their original theatrical format. Can any of the other "movie" cable channels claim that? faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

Thanks. I though it fitting, considering the occasion. I may keep him for a while, then rotate out various characters as avatars, one per month perhaps. My way of honoring these various cinema characters, and showing my respect for them, and the movie(s) they starred in. thumbs up

I think I need help in finding decent avatars....I have plenty photos I'd like to use, but they often appear fuzzy, as I'm not good at getting them into a smaller size without 'fuzzing' them up. ro-Dan was kind enough to tweak one for me a while back, but I noticed my Lee as the Creature looks fuzzy.

A bit late, but I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween! ghostly 1

Since we had Trick-or-Treat on Saturday night, it almost seemed like Halloween was laready over for us. :(

I filled my day with classic Hammer films, so that made up for the lack of Trick-or-Treaters on the actual day! Mr Green

Last night I went to see Saw III with a friend...it had much more gore than I expected!
I'd even say the gore factor was even greater than Hostel...but all in all, it was a great movie.

I went with my dad and a friend, while my mum just stayed home and gave out candy to Trick-or-Treaters. Im certain that my mum wouldn't of been able to handle the movie laughing smiley

I've heard some positive comments on the newest entry in the Saw series. Sounds like a great way to spend, Halloween. Mr Green

My Mom flipped on me during, Jurassic Park and left marks on my arm, when we went to see Fatal Attraction, together, so no doubt my Mom could never handle anything like the Saw films. ;)

I actually managed to watch both of my planned movies and two more films from TCM, on Halloween night: Masque Of The Red Death(1964) and House Of Usher(1960). Though both were good I liked Vincent Price's performance as the malevolent, devil-worshipping Prince Prospero in the 1964 film better. According to Robert Osborne of TCM, Vincent Price's acting performance in Masque Of The Red Death is considered by film critics to be one of his best. thumbs up

One film I watched on Halloween and mentioned in my Hammer list isn't a Hammer film, but I had to squeeze it in, as I LOVE it! That film would be, Island of Terror. :)

That's saying a lot, as Price gave some wonderful performances through the years. I know many feel he was way too hammy in his delivery, but I have always enjoyed his efforts. Masque of the Red Death and House of Usher are definitely two of Price's best. thumbs up

Though critics may prefer Vincent Price in Masque Of The Red Death(1964), which I also think he's very good in, my favorite performances by him in horror films are:

House Of Wax(1953) and The Pit And The Pendulum(1961). I believe Vincent Price and director Roger Corman were the primary reasons for the success of these AIP horror films based on Edgar Allan Poe stories. thumbs up

It is not a prequel. Saw III(2006) is a continuation of the "series", that is, continuing on after Saw II.

I have downloaded a freeware program from Adobe that allows me to "clean" up images a little-I actually haven't used it very much. I keep it mainly for when I print out an image on my HP printer(from the computer). You might do a Google search for "Adobe" and see if they have any simple programs for free you can download that will help you to sharpen your downloaded images. A suggestion: you might "Preview" any image on your computer to make sure it appears clear enough to use(for an avatar, sig, etc.). :)

Great picks, Lee. thumbs up I also agree that AIP can thank Corman and Price for their success....the Poe stories/films were outstanding, especially given the small budgets.
