Anyone else have any traditions they would like to share?
I have a friend who brings over a couple of plates of food, turkey and the usual side dishes, every year. Aside from that I watch NFL football, and this year there is going to be an NFL tripleheader, three games, a first for this holiday. thumbs up

This year my family is going to Minnisota, to visit some relatives...I am really not looking forward to the 11+ hour long trip, and I am especially pissed off at them for forcing me to go when my girlfriend invited me to go to her house for Thanksgiving...I haven't seen her in a little in over a month too (She lives in Michigan and I live in Indiana)...She means everything to me and if something happens to where......I don't even want to think about that...

ANYWAYS, as I was saying, I have alot of relatives from my mum's side of the family up there in Minnisota, and since I have a portable DVD player, im probably going to end up watching the three films that I planned on watching on Thanksgiving's Day on the way there...and a buch of other for the ride back!

Im really stressed out about not being able to be with my girlfriend...I need a break from school...luckily my winter break starts on the 18th or so...I believe...

I love that film, I saw it for the first time last year, it sure is nice to watch during the holidays. :)

I'm sorry to hear that you will not be able to have any time with your girlfriend. Consider yourself fortunate, however, that you have a portable DVD player to help pass the time during the long drive. When, as a kid, I had to suffer our annual family trips to Orlando(from Atlanta,GA) to attend my father's business-related convention(some big engineering expo of some kind), I had only a few comics,...or listening to my dad's oft longwinded verbatim about his job or co-workers. freak out

The only film, by the way, that I watch during this time of year(Christmas) is It's A Wonderful Life. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

Indeed. I've noticed that TCM's programming has been very heavy with older dramas(1940's/1950's) starting just after Halloween. Speaking of DVD collections, mine, at DVD Aficianado, now sits at 518 DVD titles. That does not include my DVD-R inventory, which is about 50, and my VHS inventory, still hanging on at 12. How many DVDs are on your list at this site(or comparable site), Kimi?

Lee, I have my collection up at a few different sites, but mainly use, DVD Profiler, I purchased the registered version a few years ago, I really like it, as I can access the program offline and I like the ability to print off my collection using just the titles. Also, I am just dumb enough, I don't know how to run this program using two different IDs, so Carol's collection is also combined with my collection....makes it simple when we shop to know what we each have. I also list my DVD-Rs in Profiler, but they are listed as 'Manual DVD', I like the fact DVD Profiler allows you to keep track of those, as well.

My collection is probably hovering around 1600-1650. I believe the current total listed is 1853....Carol thinks her total is less than 200, but last time I did a print out and seperated ours, I think she was closer to 300 titles.

Sorry to hear you're not able to spend the holiday with your girlfriend, Ghost the Bat, but hope in spite of being apart, you can enjoy the holiday.

Lee, last year the Broncos played the Cowboys and won in OT, I believe....a wonderful Thanksgiving gift, this year, they play KC in that first NFL telecast for the NFL Network, so it may or may not be a very good ending to my Thanksgiving, now! :(

I love, It's A Wonderful Life, but I watch so many Christmas themed films, been watching various versions of, A Christmas Carol lately. It seems this film is Carol's favorite Christmas film and we watch different versions all the time. Mr Green

It has gotten much larger than I ever expected. I've been very fortunate, I've received a ton of these as gifts over the years, found some wonderful bargains and eaten Saltines a while for some of my purchases, but I never ask for or purchase a DVD that I know I won't watch again and again. Being disabled, I tend to have a ton of free time on my hands and with the current state of TV, I really rely on my DVD collection for entertainment. :D

I have a clean out, every now and again. This Summer, I gave several DVDs to Carol that I actually had doubles of, either through upgrades or double gifts and she used them for store credit at GameStop. But, I really don't have any throw-aways in my collection. Just a few I would consider parting with that I believe I mentioned in another thread. You might be surprised, Lee, I think the numbers creep up on you much faster than you.d expect! Mr Green

I actually consumed saltines last night...with some very good tomato soup. As I touched on before, low budget dining for me always included Ramen or Maruchan noodles, Nissin chow mein noodles, PBJ sandwiches, and spaghetti. Recommendations for you if you ever have to experience a predominantly saltines-heavy diet, again: eat them with tuna fish, butter, or even slices of economy meats, like bologna or salami. tongue-1

Indeed. The KC Chiefs have been playing better lately, including today's come-from-behind win, 17-13, over the hapless Oakland Raiders. KC just got their starting QB, Trent Green, back off of injured reserve(he was recovering from a severe concussion and had been sidelined for 10 weeks) and he lead the Chiefs on a late-game, 80 yard drive, to win the game. The AFC West is going to be interesting down the stretch, what with Denver, San Diego, and Kansas City all having winning records thus far. eyebrow

...but try that with a stand-offish older cat and you might get a swat across your face!

My own cat, The Hammer, is, like people, often prone to mood changes. He always rubs against my legs when I return home from work, but does not necessarily always like being picked up, as I found out a few times early after I had adopted him, the mild scratches on my forearm testament to that. I decided to let my cat decide when he wants attention, and let him come to me, which he does, usually when I am on the couch. eyebrow

That is until the Broncos squandered a 24-7 lead, early in the third quarter and lost, 35-27! thumbs down cheeky sick smiley

I really don't hold much hope for the Broncos in going very far into the playoffs, if they should even make it that far, now. Their defense was what kept them in most games, this season and now they can't hold a lead. I'm not sure I'll watch the game on Thanksgiving, don't want to spoil my dinner. ;)

Kimi, I also believe MSN and Yahoo offer high speed internet access. Regardless of who offers it, there will always be a system crash from time to time. Example: last night(Monday) I was offline for over 10 hours due to BellSouth server problems. I called them, and they told me they knew about the problem and were working on it. Apparently it was fixed, as I am online now. Ten hours though...that's the first time, since I've had BellSouth Fast Access DSL, that that's happened. thumbs down

Once, in 1998(I think), I was so broke from paying all my bills, including my apartment rent, that I went an entire week without eating anything. I drank coffee and water all week. Not an experience I'd care to repeat. I was renting a 2 BR apartment, had just lost a roommate(he and his girlfriend got their own place), and was only making about $9.50/hr for the landscaping company I was working for. I got the bills paid anyway. Later, when I told a couple of friends about this, they became somewhat upset with me that I didn't call them, presumably to ask them for $. I have only done this once, with my father, in 1995. I borrowed $500 from him, in order to pay a deposit on an apartment I wanted to live in. I paid him back in two months, including about a hundred dollars interest(which he didn't know about either). I do not believe in borrowing money from people Kimi. Maybe it's pride. My girlfriend, Gloria, says I have a lot of it...maybe too much. She has also told me it's one of the reasons why she took a liking to me in the first place( tongue-1 ). What can I say? eyebrow

Tha's probably the best approach...just being realistic about it. I just cannot see the Denver Broncos making it to a Super Bowl with Jake Plummer as their starting QB. I have nothing against this guy, but he just seems like a player who lacks that "presence" and leadership quality, and other intangibles, to lead his team to the SB. An example of a guy with those qualities: Tom Brady, of the NE Patriots. I also think Peyton Manning of the Indy Colts has those qualities. thumbs up

Wow! An entire week with no food, that's not good. I think the only time I ever went that long without solid food was when I had some nasty bug!

I have also always tried to do everything on my own, without asking for help from either parent. When I was still able to work and when our department was still more of a seasonal department, in the Spring and Summer months, I'd go with very little pay, as we'd not have steady work on our shift, some weeks. I had my cable shut off for about 2 weeks, once and it wasn't really that bad, but I don't like to go without some things, even if they aren't a necessity.

The only time this has ever become a real problem is when I was no longer able to work because of my health issues and was awaiting my determination from Social Security, for disability benefits. If not for my family, I wouldn't have made it other than living in a cardboard box. I'll always be grateful for all their help and the best part, when I was thanking them for all their kindness, they said, I;d done the same for all of them at certain times in their past and they were just returning the favor.

I think people are often attracted to people with a definite sense of pride and I think it only becomes an issue when they become so prideful, they can't accept help from anyone, including those that do love them. :)

Agreed. Two very capable QBs and Manning just needs to get those playoff losses behind him and the Colts could hjave a nice run of SB wins. Look how long it took Elway and the Broncos to finally get over that hump.

Probably longer than John Elway would care to admit. tongue-1 Elway deserved a ring, no doubt about that, and I'm glad he got two there at the end. thumbs up

The NFL on Thursday features a trifecta a games:

Denver @ Kansas City-it would be easy to pick KC here, but Trent Green is still, IMO, rusty from a 10 week layoff(on IR from a severe concussion). Prediction: Trent Green will need more aspirin for his headache after this game, though not because of any blow to the head, but from losing to the Broncos. Denver 20 KC 17

Tampa Bay @ Dallas-TB has had a tough year. Little offense. Their starting QB Chris Simms is out for the year, after undergoing a spleenectomy, but he will make a full recovery. The Buccaneers, as a team, won't, at least not this season.
Result: Dallas 31 Tampa Bay 10

Miami @ Detroit-Detroit has been playing everyone tough this season, though it has not manifested itself in many wins this season. Miami has enjoyed a resurgence, of sorts, relying on it's fast and athletic defense, and the mistake-free play of QB Joey Harrington to win three games in a row. Prediction: Miami continues it's winning ways. Detroit...well, the Lions end up looking like another animal after this game, one that is the common symbol of Thanksgiving. freak out Miami 21 Detroit 14

The only game that erally came out like I'd hoped was the Dallas/TB game. I only cheer for the 'Boys, as my brother, Michael is a big fan and I hate Miami, so was hoping Detroit could win that and it goes without saying, I wanted those Broncos to win, but their play of late, may mean no sweating out any playoff games, this season! crazy

I watched the Miami-Detroit and Dallas-Tampa Bay games, then watched most of the Miami-Boston College game...this of course after consuming excessive amounts of food, including: turkey, ham, stuffing, biscuits, green beans, mashed potatoes(w/gravy tongue-1 ), and pecan and sweet potato pie. Surprisingly, I never had to raid my bottle of Pepto Bismol, which I had brought along just in case. nod

I had done some work in my friend's yard for a few hours Thanksgiving AM so I had an appetite. groink!

NFL game observations: though Detroit started well Miami dominated for the remainder of the game. As long as Matt Millen is the GM of the Detroit Lions this team will play the role of perennial NFL stinker year in and year out. shifty eyes

Tampa Bay also started strong, scoring first, but Dallas took over after that and never looked back. The Cowboys have too many playmakers on offense, and their QB Tony Romo had a good game. I was also impressed with Dallas safety Roy Williams, who put some impressive hits on Tampa Bay players in this game, including a particularly jarring collision with TB RB Michael Pittman, who was headed out of bounds on a kick return. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

KC was workman-like in beating the Broncos last night, 19-10. If Denver doesn't get it in a pile quick, they might not make the playoffs. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

Perhaps Dan, though I still feel almost ashamed of myself for doing it, rather than asking a friend to help me out. Too stubborn I guess. It's not the first time I've tested my physical limits either, though in the other occurences it was more out of curiosity as opposed to necessity: a few years ago I got the crazy notion to see how long I could go without any sleep. I managed two and a half days before, on the verge of physical collapse, I finally hit the rack. I once hung from pullup bars at an outdoor park for about two hours...I wouldn't suggest anyone try this. crazy
