We had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, I was so hungry, but in the end, only ate a plateful and no dessert until late Thanksgiving night! I'm definitely looking forward to the next month with all the face-stuffing that goes on! ;)

Do you and your roommate put up a Christmas tree in your residence, Kimi? If so, when does it go up?

We picked our tree out on Saturday and put it up, but decorated it, yesterday. I enjoy the tree before and during Christmas and by the time Christmas is over, I'm ready to take it down, so we usually have it down before the New Year.

Last year's tree was quite large for the siz of the livingroom and we decided that this year, we'd go smaller. Well, we got this tree home and took the netting off and it's GIGANTIC! freak out I dare say this is even slightly larger than last year's tree. I think the problem is, we were outside, looking at all these trees and in the great outdoors, everything tends to look smaller, but get it home and we really misjudged. :D Oh well, it's only for one month and we love how it looks and that's the main thing. I was a little surprised to read that a person will die from lack of sleep before dying from lack of food or water!

That surprises me as well. If I recall correctly a person can perish from lack of water, in some circumstances, in as little as 48 hours. Depending on a person's body weight, an individual might be able to survive without food for two weeks. I have read that sleep deprivation in excess of about 72 hours(3 days) can cause a person to begin to hallucinate and experience a total mental breakdown. freak out dancing cheeky smiley

thumbs up

Christmas trees need, initially, a lot of water, so make sure to keep the water in the stand replenished. It's normal for a tree to absorb a lot of water in the first few days. After that you will probably notice a dropoff in how much water the tree takes in through it's trunk. You can also buy, for a few dollars, various products that, added to the water in the stand, will help minimize "needling"(the tree losing it's needles from the stress of being out of the ground and rootless). I have seen such a product sold at Home Depot stores and Pike Nurseries-it's usually less than five dollars, is a clear liquid in a small plastic container, and you simply add it once to the water in the stand. I've tried it. It works.

I looked around at a Christmas tree lot today-all the prices were much higher than what I usually spend. I usually go to Home Depot and get a 6' Fraser Fir for around $25. My boss told me today that we have some Leyland Cypress trees around the yard in our general inventory area, in the 4-5' height range, and for around $15.00. I'm going to buy one of these this year, then after New Years Day I'm going to give it to a friend of mine who enjoys getting free plants/small trees for his spacious front and backyards. thumbs up

I believe the bit of lack of water/liquids, I begin to feel physically ill if I don't have something to drink almost every minute of the day, of course, could have a lot to do with being diabetic, but I need my fluids!

I used to get by on no sleep for a couple of days at a time, when I was working. This time of the year, I'd be getting about 70-80 hours in a week and if I happened to get a day off, I wouldn't want to sleep the day off, away, so I wouldn't go to bed and let's just say, my eyes would get all wonky as would my body after a couple of days! I made sure not to do that too often, as driving in that condition is definitely not safe for myself or anyone else.

As for food, I like my 'eats', but as long as I have fluids, I could probably go a while without food. Not that I;d want to, mind you, but I could do it. ;)

I hate to say it, but I am SICK of turkey sandwiches! cheeky sick smiley We have a wee bit of sweet potato casserole, macaroni and cheese and some gravy left and by God, I am going to do my best to finsih those little bits up and Carol will have to finish the turkey up....I can't eat one more mouthful! :D

I've never had sweet potato pie, but must admit, it sure sounds good. Pecan pie, I really like, but it's so very rich, a small piece is all I need......shouldn't have any pie, but during this time of the year, I do partake of some! Mr Green

I'm actually surprised to see a pumpkin here and there on doorsteps at various neighborhoods we work in...even now. I took my landlord's large pumpkin and set it behind her house along the back woodline, much to the delight of various critters, mostly squirrels and birds, who quickly ate the pumpkin down to practically nothing in a about a week. freak out

Leyland Cypress's and Hemlocks are fairly popular alternatives to Fraser and Douglas Firs, two tree types that are prevalent in the vast majority of Christmas tree lots across the country. One reason many opt for these trees is because they can be planted somewhere on one's property after the Christmas season is over-there's no need to make a trip to Home Depot or elsewhere to drop off your Xmas tree, which is ultimately run through a chipper and turned into mulch. Both "Hemlocks" and "Leyland Cypress's" can get pricey, because they are, if maintained correctly, very scenic and very long-lasting trees. If you decide on one of these next year, remember that both of these tree types prefer 50/50 shade/sunlight, and cooler temperatures. You're best off buying one where the tree "ball" is in a burlap sack(and not a pot or plastic container of some kind), something we landscapers commonly call a "B&B" tree(ball in burlap). faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

It tastes, I think, similar to pumpkin pie. If you like pumpkin pie, Kimi, I believe you would like sweet potato pie. Both of these are good with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, along with vanilla ice cream or Cool Whip. groink!

We set our Jack-O-Lantern out in the wods right next to the apartment, and in spits of being carved out, the little woodland creatures seemed to make a meal out of what was left! We drag our tree over into the wooded area after we're through with it, as well and the squirrels and rabbits seem to huddle into those, too. We live in the sticks, so there is plenty of places for wild life to find places to settle down into, but it still amazes me to see deer walking up our driveway and we've had a bear or two knock over the dumpster twice, now! We have squirrels, rabbits and even raccoons wandering all over, here. I'm a little more cautious when I see a raccoon, as they can often be rabid, but we had one, I swear, it must have weighed 30 pounds, waddle up the driveway a month or so ago....it was huge!

Thanks for the info, Lee. Not to sound too ignorant, but once these trees have been planted, how large do they become? We rent this apartment, but we have wooded area on all sides of us and I'm just curious how much room they need to grow?

You are wise to be wary of raccoons, animals that are not naturally aggressive, but having said that they are also notoriously quick-tempered animals, and can get highly agitated. About a month ago me and one of my crew members spotted a large raccoon wandering by, not more than thirty feet away from us-despite the fact we were in the process of blowing off the property(with loud backpack blowers) this critter showed no fear of us at all, and meandered to the back of the house, to raid the homeowner's birdseed stand and feeder. Yesterday we saw a small deer(it had small antlers-possibly an adolescent male) along a back woodline at a client's house, and I warned my two crew members to leave the animal alone, as deer have been known to charge at people. freak out

Not to sound too ignorant, but once these trees have been planted, how large do they become?

They can become quite large. There are various species of hemlocks-the largest species can reach heights in excess of ninety(90) feet. Two types of hemlocks native to the eastern and southeastern United States, the Canadian hemlock and the Carolina hemlock, respectively, reach heights ranging from 40-70 feet. Were you to buy a Canadian hemlock, for example, and then decide to plant it on your property after the holidays, you would need to pick an area where the tree would have lots of room to grow-remember too that you can periodically prune this tree to control it's size. Many people do, and there others who want these trees to become large, either for privacy or various other "screening" purposes, e.g. to dampen the noise from a nearby road or street. Hemlocks generally like acidic soil and cool climates, a condition I would think would be fairly prevalent in Pennsylvania. Hemlocks demand good drainage, Kimi, and will not survive if improperly planted in the ground. Landscape companies, as a rule, can only install hemlocks in the fall or winter, when the temps are cool/cold, which minimizes the stress on the tree and optimizes the survivability of the tree after it has been planted. Acidifying soil amendments in the soil around a newly planted hemlock are standard practice in the "green" industry, and many landscape companies use a light layer of pine-bark mini-nuggets as a top-dressing around the base of the newly planted hemlock-the mini-nuggets help to keep the soil around the tree "cooler".

Leyland Cypress trees also can get very large. Click the link for more info:Leyland Cypress tree info

The only other raccoon Il'd actually seen in the 'wild' was one that was, unfortunately, rabid and was holed up under a carriage house on property my Dad was renting at the time. Dad called the Game Commission and they came out and took care of the poor thing.

We see so many deer in these parts, I think we all sometimes forget that they can and will occasionally charge. Many times, they just stand and watch us or take off with those long, graceful leaps they have. Bear have become a real problem, around these parts.....they wander into yards, knock down bird feeders, get into garbage and appear to have little fear of us. The apartment has a dumpster at the top of the driveway and I won't walk garbage up at night, I take it up in the vehicle, as one late-night, I went to pick Carol up from work and right across the street was a large bear and we have had the dumpster knocked over a couple of times.

Great, thanks for the info and links, Lee. I'm thinking, if we do go that route, next year, perhaps we'd be wise to take it to take the tree to a landscaping company and donate it to them, perhaps. I'd hate to purchase one and kill it by improperly planting it.

Back in early 1997, I was in charge of a medium-sized planting job at a residence where the homeowners were out of town and their large German shepherd was secure in his large, rectangular shaped pen. We were told by the landscape designer that we were to allow the dog out twice per day for about fifteen minutes each time, in order for the dog to run a little and of course so it could also answer the call of nature. We were there two and a half days during this job. On the second day, while this large(and friendly) dog was roaming about, I was called to the backyard by one of my crew: the German Shepherd had attacked and severely mangled a possum. After returning the dog to it's pen we checked out the frightened, angry, and severely injured possum, whose hind legs had been damaged so badly by the dog that it could only move by pulling itself forward with it's front legs. Two of my crew members wanted to end the animal's suffering by chopping it's head off with a hatchet, or even an axe, both of which were readily available on our two trucks at the job site. I warned the entire crew not to do anything to this animal-I even warned one fellow to leave the animal alone or risk a physical confrontation with me on the spot. I went next door to a neighbor's house, the neighbor allowing me to call the county's animal control department. Within 45 minutes a county employee had arrived, safely secured the injured critter in a portable carrying container, and taken it away, to be, as the animal control rep told me, humanely euthanized by gas.
In my mind there has been, and always will be, absolutely no justification for committing an act of physical brutality against any animal, well, injured, or sick, for any reason, unless the animal is rabid and attacks, where a response is purely self-defensive in nature, or where the reason is for the consumption of the animal...like the deer hunts you mentioned some time ago, that families in your neck of the woods rely on to augment their food supply.

It's tough to see an animal, any animal suffer, be it injured or sick, but I don't think I could kill an animal to end it's suffering. Like you, I;d call animal control or something like that and let them take care of the animal, as humanely as possible and with as little suffering, as possible. As you mentioned, if an animal is rabid or attacks, then I'd do whatever it took to protect myself.

I mentioned those deer hunts. Well, Mom and I were put together on the side of a mountain one Saturday, when I was about 15-16 and the guys were putting on a 'drive' and had planted several of us in various spots, in hope to drive the deer towards us. Mom and I were standing back to back, talking about Christmas shopping when I felt Mom kind of tense up and slowly lift her gun.....I heard her safety come off and then in a very shaky voice, she muttered....'Oh My God!' I decided even if it meant spooking off a deer, I had to look and I turned and there running stright for us was a bear! I was so shocked and at a total loss for words that I yelled, 'Holy Sh*t!'. It must have startled the bear or I'm thinking he never actually saw us standing against that tree, because it was almost cartoonish...he put the brakes on, shook his head and took off over the mountain. I put my arm around Mom and told her how proud I was of her and she burts into tears! My step-Dad's brother had been up on top of the mountain and the bear ran right past him, so he'd come down to be sure we were OK. Mom never really wanted to be out there, hunting, but she did it, because my step-Dad pushed so hard for her to. She never shot her gun and after the bear, it was the last time she was in the woods as a hunter! freak out

Glad to hear that the bear ran off. A good ending. No people hurt, and the animal escapes back into the wilds, which is where it belongs. Many years ago when I went up to Cloudland Canyon(near the GA-TN line) to hike, on my own, I would take, as a precaution, among other things in my knapsack, a loaded .38 revolver with two extra speed-loaders. I took it mostly because of the possibility, however small, that I might run into a cougar or a black bear. I also took it because, at the time of my annual hikes, there were frequent reports of armed and dangerous marijuana "growers" in the north Georgia foothills. The only thing I ever ran into that alarmed me, in any way, was a large pile of steaming excrement I happened upon along a trail-it was no doubt left by a bear. I left the area quietly, my gun drawn for a while. I once stopped to talk with another hiker, some business-owner from Tennessee, who told me he had discovered a dead body along part of the trail near the Cloudland Canyon State Park the previous year. freak out

I don't think I could handle discovering a body that had been mauled by a wild animal or murdered for that matter. freak out I've seen some very horrific photos online of animal attacks as well as some interviews with victims of animal attacks on TV and that stuff scare the hell right out of me.

The body this guy discovered had been murdered, at least that's what he told me. He had to hang around to give a statement to the police and he told me they mentioned that the body, that of a woman, had injuries consistent with several blows to the head. freak out

I went on these annual hikes from 1988-1994. I actually quit going up to Cloudland Canyon because I was starting to get bored. Guess I need a new outdoor hobby, eh? tongue-1
