I think and we certainly can't go any larger than the tree we have this year!
Indeed. How tall is your Christmas tree? eyebrow

I went on these annual hikes from 1988-1994. I actually quit going up to Cloudland Canyon because I was starting to get bored. Guess I need a new outdoor hobby, eh?

Hiking is a great way to stay in shape and enjoy some beautiful views at the same time, but I can see where going to the same spot for several years could becoming boring.....only because scenery doesn't always change a lot. Did you take a lot of photographs when hiking, Lee?

Raking leaves is not one of my favorite things, but by this time, most leaves are down and long gone, so that's good for us.

I believe our ceilings are 8 feet and we had them take some off, just to be sure it fit and with the topper, it's right to the top. I think it's huge around, though....Mom thinks it's perfectly shaped, which it is, but my gosh, it's a wide one!

I did one year, but with a disposable camera. I am not into taking pictures, of anything really, and I am even less enamored with having my own picture taken. I guess I am just not that interested in photography, Kimi. I never have been. eyebrow

All I did this weekend was cleaning up the leaves, and God almighty it was leaf armageddon at my friend's house Saturday. freak out

The leaves appear, at least here in Atlanta, to be coming down much faster than in previous years. It could be because we have been having a steady flux of weekly rainfall here since the beginning of November. I have seen some water oaks and some pin oaks still holding some leaves on their branches, though not much. From the looks of it we should be finished with our leaf cleanup work by the middle of this month. bravo clap

Fraser firs also tend to "droop" a little more after they have been untied and the branches & runners of the tree naturally spread out. Hanging ornaments on the tree's branches will also cause a little more of this "drooping", which can make the tree look wider than it actually is. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I don't care for having my photo taken at all! I do enjoy looking at photos and occasionally I'll grab the camera and do some photos, but I have or had a bad habit of not always getting film developed in a decent amount of time....I do like the ease and instant gratification with a digital camera, so I do use that a lot more.

I'm a tad concerned still that this tree doesn't seem to be taking as much water as past years trees. The needles are still soft and if I run a branch through my hand, none of the needles come off, but still, I haven't had to add a whole lot of water.

Well, as always, December is upon us and flying by at an alarming rate. Me, I absolutely adore Christmas, have since I was a wee lass and not just because of the gifts, my family had and has so many wonderful traditions, I couldn't help but love the holiday.

I decorate early and enjoy it all through the holiday. I love to shop for people, we bake and share those efforts with family and friends and watching holiday films and TV episodes as well as non-stop Christmas tunes just make life worth living for me.

Just curious as to how those that celebrate this holiday do so and do you have any special traditions that you did as a child and continue to do as an adult?

I would like to upload a picture of myself onto my MySpace page and here. I understand you need a digital camera to do this, but I have never fully understood how to get the pic taken, developed, and into the computer. Maybe Dan could explain this to me better...or you could. I have seen prices for digital cameras and I'm not eager to buy one. I thought I saw a disposable kind of digital camera at a CVS Pharmacy. Do they sell these cameras as a "use it and lose it" type? eyebrow

Lee, does your steady work slow down to the point of any layoff time during the Winter?

No. The work can, and has, slowed down, with my present employer, and past landscape employers, but never so much as to warrant a layoff. I worked for Trugreen Landcare in 1999, 2000, and through May of 2001, and we would, during the winter, and after leaf season, drop a man from our three-man crew(we serviced high-end apartment properties-strictly maintenance and no plant/tree installations). I worked for another local landscape company from 4/2002 until 1/2005 where our hours would sometimes average about 35 hours a week from January through mid to late March. Thankfully, no layoffs, of any kind. thumbs up

Water absorption via the trunks of these trees can and does vary. Probably nothing to worry about.

Which is good. The first sign that a tree is drying out is needling, i.e. needles falling off the runners in abundance.

Just keep an eye on both the water consumption of the tree and the condition of the extensions and runners. Refill the stand with water only as necessary.

December is upon us and flying by at an alarming rate.
I hate to sound like the Grinch but I like the fact that December, for me anyway, is moving by quickly. I weary of the glut of TV Christmas commercials and the increased volume and zaniness of local traffic around town. Our clients also get, surprisingly, more prickly this time of year towards us, usually due to having a party at their residence and wanting an extra service visit to tidy up their properties. Also, many more of our clients tend to call and complain about their bills at this time of year-it could be because most people stress over their expenses a little more this time of year...? All I know is we work the same way and yet get complaints from homeowners only at this time of year. Also, my employer, like the vast majority of landscape companies, is trying to cram as much work(and outgoing customer billings) into this year, as possible, which means grinding work days...right up to 12/22, our last work day before we take a break until 1/2/07.

I'll be glad when this month is over. shifty eyes

Usually, when you purchase a camera like this, they come with a kit that includes a CD, which you'll pop in the computer and it will install the program to upload your photos from the camera to your computer. That's great. At one time, when I first began working at the processing plant, my shift used to be very seasonal, but the last 8 or 9 years I worked, there, it never slowed down and more often than not, our department and both shifts were working 7 days a week.

I am pleased that in spite of not 'drinking' a ton of water, the tree looks great and the needles are soft and pliable. I can honestly say, in the years we've had a real tree, we've never had one turn dry or brown and I;ve had some people tell me their tree needles have turned slightly brown.....thank goodness it's never happened, here!

Putting up with tons of work, complaints from clients and tons of craziness in your area doesn't make you a Grinch, sounds like you need an escape from it all!

Me, Christmas, no matter how horrible life was going, has always been my escape, I guess. Mom and Dad, while still together, always made the entire holiday season very special and that 'feel-good' feeling has simply stuck with me my entire life. Had some serious rough spots, growing up, when my step-Dad was still drinking, but overall, Mom did her best to make the holiday season very special and I told her the other day, I can't recall ever having a bad Christmas.

That's great.

I agree. thumbs up Mr Green

This is a typical "profile" of what a maintenance landscape work crew might do during the year, broken down by month:

January 1. prune crape myrtle trees, and other various perennials(low lying ground cover plants with life cycles of two years or more), including hostas, dayllilies
2. perform final leaf cleanup tasks, mainly cleaning leaves out of planting and flower beds, and other areas around a property that are not deemed a "natural" area
3. apply fertilizer(usually granular) to shrubs and small trees around a property
4. blow off the site's hardscapes(decks, patios, sidewalks, driveway, and any other hard, man-made surface)
5. mow fescue turf(a cool season grass) as needed
6. "deadhead" any flowering shrubs with declined.dead "head"(blooms), like roses or hydrangeas(Annabelles or Nikko Blues come to mind)

February 1. install pine straw on properties in planting beds and other areas as necessary or as directed by the contract or homeowner
2. perform any pruning of dead/declined limbs(that are reachable by ladder) in trees around a property
3. remove any errant ivy growing up the trunks of trees on a property
4. apply pre-emergent herbicide to areas that are prone to weed infestation during the warmer months-these areas are usually large. pine-strawed planting beds with lots of open areas-the "pre-emergent" herbicide is usually granular, and, after being absorbed into the soil, kills ungerminated weed seeds
5. apply liquid fertilizer to pansies and other fall "color"(in flower beds)
6. "deadhead" pansies(in flower beds)-plucking off a declined dead bloom will prompt the pansy to re-bloom another flower or "head"-this done also in January, March, and April as well
7. site blow off
8. mow fescue grass as needed
9. fertilize bermuda/zoysia/centipede turf(warm season grasses) as desired

March 1. continue any items from January and February, as needed
2. site blow-off
* March is typically the slowest month, maintenance-wise
3. mow fescue grass as needed
4. fertilize roses(optional-roses usually need a special fertilizer)

April 1. fertilize fescue(cool season) as desired
2. begin mowing fescue grass at a slightly lower height
3. begin mowing warm season grasses again(they've been dormant during the winter and need this mowing to enhance their regrowth in May/June)
4. site blow off

May 1. change out flowers(from "fall" color to "spring" color")
2. continue mowing turf as needed, based on what type of grass is on the site
3. site blow off
4. other shrubs may begin grwoing again as warmer weather returns-prune these to shape or as the customer directs

June 1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical

July 1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical

August 1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical

September 1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical

October1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical

October1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical

October 1. mow turf
2. prune shrubbery as needed
3. spray for weeds as needed(using a post-emergent herbicide, that is, an agent that kills the root after it has appeared out of the soil. Most common weedkiller and "post-emergent" herbicide to use: "Roundup")
4. perform edging of turf(curb and bedlines) as needed
5. site blow-off
6. handweeding as needed, and where chemical application is not practical
7. begin leaf control measures(depending on the amount of leaf drop)
8. "deadhead" roses(if any on site)

November 1. early this month switchover from "Spring" color(begonias) to "Fall" color(e.g. pansies or violas)
2. continue mowing fescue turf as needed
3. perform leaf cleanup as needed
4. put one final "cut" on warm season grass, which should be going dormant this month
5. handweeding as necessary
6. any light pruning of shrubbery, as needed-most shrubs do not do too much growing after temps drop this month
7. "deadhead" roses(if any on site)

December 1. perform leaf cleanup as needed
2. any light pruning as needed
3. touch up any areas with pine straw(that were blown out for leaves) as diected by the homeowner
4. continue "deadheading" roses(if any)

In addition to these things that I pulled off the top of my head a maintenance crew will occasionally handle plant replacements(replacing a lone dead plant), and even perform small enhancements, like adding mulch to a path, or gravel to a walk, etc. There are also customer request items, like blowing out gutters, disposing of downed trees(up to a certain size of course).

There's always plenty to do in the landscaping business, Kimi. Trust me, I know. freak out

There are only two reasons that this happens, Kimi: either the tree is dry(it isn't being sufficiently watered) or it has some kind of disease/bug problem. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I'd think the risk of a fire must be much more of a potential when a tree even hints at being slightly brown. Carol and I were admiring our tree, yesterday......it's really, very nice, in spite of being half a forest. ;)

Living where you do must also help keep you busy more than say, someone living in the upper mid-west or northeast.
There are variations of routine landscape maintenance tasks for each region of the United States, Kimi. Much of this is linked to the type of plants that thrive in a particular area, of the U.S., often referred to within the context of plant inventories by the word "zone". Zones in the U.S. are designated by a number, which represents a fahrenheit temperature range at which a tree/shrub can survive and continue to grow. In the northeast United States, for instance, landscape companies will install shrubs that have a greater "cold hardiness", that is, a greater tolerance for colder temps, which are obviously longer-lasting and more severe in the NE as opposed to here in Atlanta, GA. In the southwestern part of the U.S., e.g. Texas, New Mexico, or even parts of Southern California, where the climate is generally more arid(dry) and much warmer, and with more intense hot weather, a landscape company would need to work with plants that are more tolerant of warm/hot weather and less rain-junipers and hollies come to mind, two plants that can tolerate less water in the surrounding soil. There is actually a term for those opting to landscape their yard with shrubs/trees that require much less water: it's called xeriscaping(pronounced zeri-scaping). faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->
