Welcome to MONSTERLAND FORUMS! We are a casual and friendly online community of movie fans who like to talk about giant monsters, horror and sci-fi in cinema, on television and on Blu Ray/DVD. There are forums for sports, casual chat and video games as well. For those of you who like making art, writing stories and creating videos, our community includes a forum for these submissions as well. Check out our main index page and other board forums! Anyone is welcome to join our community!

MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports.

MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here.

For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Id like to inform Monsterland and all who inhabit it that you will notice that I wont be on too often for up to 8 weeks or so. I'm currently taking 2 online classes so I can graduate early; I have till 6/2/11 to get this stuff done and I will be spending every spare minute trying bust my ass on these classes. I'm currently taking English and Humanities; English is a 25(ish) week class and Humanities is a 12 week class. So I have to do about 40 weeks worth of work in a short amount of time so I will occasionally drop by but I don't guarantee anything.

See You Soon;
Shawn

Shawn if you need help with papers or anything for either class then forward them my way. I'm very good at doing papers in fact every single paper I've written for my college courses I've waited till last minute and still have gotten As on them.

Obviously I don't suggest doing that now and if you need help get them to me ASAP. Good luck and glad to see you're taking my advice. rock on

I believe education is very important and if I where you after you finish your online courses enroll in a local college ASAP.

Agreed with Lee. Another good thing to help you is put off video games for awhile too. Not completely mind you just but them on the back burner.

Make sure you double check your work before submitting it. You don't want to fail that course and delay your graduation.

Here are some links you may want to check out about the Peace Corps. and what they do.
http://www.peacecorps.gov/
http://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=learn.whyvol

Basically I was wondering what are your thoughts about the Peace Corps. Ive always wanted to travel and I enjoy seeing new things and learning about different cultures. I was considering going to college for a year or so and then maybe applying. What are your thoughts?

I believe you receive some money from the Peace Corps after your period of volunteer work is finished. Not sure how much it is. I also know you have to pass a complete and thorough physical exam before being accepted into the Peace Corps. I believe it can be a positive experience for someone who volunteers. Bear in mind, however that there are some places in the world where Peace Corps workers often work in dangerous conditions, both natural and man made.

I'll likely combine this topic with your "Time and a half" topic, Shawn since both touch on possible career aspirations of yours. We could rename it the "careers" topic or something similar. Give it some thought. winky

Getting an entry level position somewhere then working my way up. Save money and start a restaurant with my friend, if that's successful branch off into other businesses (real-estate, telecommunications, etc. etc.). Got to have your hand in more than one pot you know.

Good topic. I enjoy reading about others' career plans. Glad to hear things are going well so far for both Shawn and gvamp.

As for me, I'm still struggling to find a job (preferably part-time) to support my filmmaking ventures. It's taking forever for me to get anything resembling a career going. If I fail to get into filmmaking, my fall-back position would probably be to get into the police force somewhere and try and work my way up to detective. Though I would much rather get into filmmaking and science/exploration.

I'm going into screenwriting myself. I'm brainstorming ideas and fleshing out the good ones into treatments and scripts, and researching what it takes to get into the business.

On a side note, do you guys have any idea how much a good writer can sell a script for? If every big name in the industry gave to charity on a weekly basis, we'd reduce our poverty level to a needle point.

I would have no idea but the only numbers they release are the top writers like Spielberg.

Screenwriters have it pretty rough in Hollywood most of the time. They aren't payed nearly as much as they deserve. Directors can buy your script and then have another guy re-write it as many times as they want. Once you sell the script, it's theirs and they can do whatever they want with it. It's not all bad, though. I'm sure a really successful screenwriter could still make a decent amount of money. But it still bothers me how little respect there is for screenwriters these days. Often what will happen is a writer will pen a great script, and then the producers and the director will get it and have it rewritten so much that when it makes it to the screen it barely resembles the original script, and yet the screenwriter's name will still be on it. That's what happened with Ridley Scott's Robin Hood movie. The script started out as this cool medieval forensics tale in which the Sheriff of Nottingham is the main character and Robin Hood is the bad guy. A few re-writes later, and everything cool about the script was gone, and it was just another generic re-telling of the Robin Hood tale we've all seen before a hundred times. Once the script is sold, all the screenwriter can do is hold his breath and hope for the best.

Anyways. I wish I could tell you how much a screenwriter actually makes. I've just heard that it's not all that great. Most of what I know about screenwriting I learned from Bill Martell. http://sex-in-a-sub.blogspot.com/http://sex-in-a-sub.blogspot.com/

I'd love to do some screenwriting. But I'll be a director first, and a writer second. That way I'll actually have a level of creative control.

Anyways. This is

Haha, weird. I was sure I'd written more there. I meant to say something about how this is why I'd prefer to be a director first and a writer second, because directors actually get a degree of creative control.
