For some time now we've been hearing from George Lucas and Lucasfilm Ltd. that there is a live-action Star Wars television series in the works. The purpose of this thread is to serve as a bulletin board for SWTV info. If you hear any new info regarding this exciting project feel free to tack it up here. Let's keep the Force alive at Monsterland. I'll get it started:

From: http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3484376 :

MARCH 15th, 2006:

The series will focus on the missing years between Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars movie, released in 1977.

Producer Rick McCullum said at Monday night's Empire Awards, "We're very excited--we just got confirmation George Lucas has committed to writing the Star Wars TV series.

"I guess this is the news all fans have been waiting to hear."

Filming on the TV series is expected to commence next year.

October 7, 2005:

ComingSoon.net attended the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith DVD junket at Skywalker Ranch on Thursday, October 6th. At the event, "Star Wars" producer Rick McCallum talked about both the new 3-D animated Clone Wars series and the live-action series in development.

He added that "the live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007 and we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction... It is going to be much darker, much grittier, it's much more character-based. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between 'Episode III' and 'Episode IV' with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other novels and other things. So, we're really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series."

Asked where the live-action series will be shot and in what kind of format, McCallum said that "principal photography will take place all around the world, probably with a base in Sydney. And, yes, we will be shooting in hi-def. Or, if anything else evolves within the next 12 months, you know, that would replace hi-def. I don't see that happening, but there may be new and more, or less expensive cameras with more optical imagery or optical discs that we record on. But basically it will be hi-def, yes."

Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda in the films, was also present and addressed a question whether or not he and Yoda will be part of the two new series. "Rick and I haven't talked about it yet. I am involved in the animated series right now. We're here at the Ranch as Rick said and we're currently working on the project and I'm very excited about that. The live-action is a little further out, so we haven't had those discussions yet. But knowing George and knowing the franchise there's going to be animated characters in there, we just haven't discussed them yet."

Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine, was asked a similar question about revisiting his character in the TV series. "Nobody really knows the details of the television series, I don't think that's because people are being particularly coy. I just think a lot of things haven't been decided yet. But I know that George's intention is to follow one of the characters who's been less highlighted up to now, but has been very popular with audiences. And sure, if it's the period between the movies, the Emperor has to be referred to. But you'll remember he was referred to often without actually appearing in the first Star Wars movie. And Peter Cushing was his very effective representative. So, I suspect there might be a number of very effective representatives, but you know, I always answer my telephone."

So there ya go. That's about all we know about the show for now but I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have more concrete info and possibly some photos. THANK GOD Star Wars is not over yet!

Star Wars TV A Ways Off

Rick McCallum, George Lucas' longtime Star Wars producing partner, told SCI FI Wire that future projects are a ways off, including a live-action TV show that is at least a year and a half away. "Star Wars TV series, probably not for a couple of years," McCallum said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Universal City, Calif., on May 2. "George is starting to start the basic concept of it. ... We're interviewing writers. We're seeing a lot of people. But I'd say it's not going to be happening for another at least 18 months."

McCallum also denied rumors that the new series would focus on members of the Skywalker family, but repeated that the show will take place in the timeframe between Episode III and IV. "All-new characters," he added. "That missing 20-year period when Luke is growing up. ... Think bounty hunter. That's all I can tell you. There's nobody else that you'll know [in it]. At the moment. You know, it's still [in] really really early stages. He hasn't really sat down to think about which direction [he's going]."

McCallum added that 3-D theatrical versions of the Star Wars movies are still planned. "We're working on that," he said. "It's just a question of how many theaters will be out there. Hopefully, by the end of this year there will be about 1,500 [3-D] theaters. We need about two or three thousand before it makes it, you know, viable for any of us to go out in 3-D. But that looks like it will happen sometime in the year 2007, so hopefully we'll be happy about that."

Lucas is also planning a new run of Clone Wars-themed animated shorts. "There's an animated series being done right now, so that probably also won't be ready for another year," McCallum said. "But, yeah, that's looking really good." —Patrick Lee, News Editor

Here's an interesting update on the upcoming live-action Star Wars TV series. Apparently it won't go in front of cameras until 2008. That seems like such a long way off. :( At least we'll get the all-CG Clone Wars series in 2007 to hold us over! :)

Thanks go out to Comingsoon.net for providing the news.

TV Series Update

So where are things at with the two "Star Wars" TV series? Well, there's not a lot of news on either front though things are moving full steam ahead behind the scenes. The CGI animated series is well under way. Lucasfilm's animation studio in Singapore opened in October and has been progressing rapidly. Word is characters have been designed and the look is quite different from the previous "Clone Wars" series. Writing on the show has also been in progress since shortly after "Revenge of the Sith" and is led by Head Writer/Story Editor Henry Gilroy. Though George Lucas isn't writing the series he's heavily involved in the development of the scripts. The show is set between "Episode II" and "III" or what is better known as the "Clone Wars" era. Despite being heavily covered in the comics, books, and cartoon series, expect a few surprises. George Lucas has stated he hopes to see it on the air in 2007.

There was a brief stir recently as mainstream press realized Lucas was also working on a live action series. Despite the fact that it was old news to fans, a few details emerged. There was a very good article in TIME magazine about it. Like the animated series, the live action series has been progressing rapidly and quietly. This past August, Lucas and McCallum were in Sydney discussing shooting it there (Lucas visited the set of Superman Returns in August while there). Amid the flurry of reports on the show, TheForce.Net put together a pretty good recap of what is confirmed about the series:

- The "Star Wars" live action television show will consist of 100 hours ( or 100 1 hour each episodes )
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will be based on secondary characters with possible cameos by some movie characters
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will take place between Episode 3 & 4
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will be done at the pricepoint of 1 million dollars per episode
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will start filming in 2008

What's not confirmed but rumored is that the show will have comic character Quinlan Vos make an appearance. Jedi Master Vos was spared a grisly death in "Revenge of the Sith." Lucas had a scene depicting his death on Kashyyyk storyboarded, but he spared the character at the last minute. (The comics show him escaping the clonetroopers and later having a newborn son while in hiding.) Will he play a prominent role in the TV series or is it a fan's hope? Expect more news to trickle out from Lucasfilm's presentation at the San Diego Comic Con in July.
The news regarding Quinlon Vos is interesting. I don't really follow the Star Wars Expanded Universe of the comics but I know he is a popular character in those circles and I think he'll be a wildly popular character if he makes it into the mainstream SW continuity. Some of you may remember his name was mentioned in Revenge of the Sith. Obi-Wan mentions the name "Master Vos" at the end of a debriefing, just before Anakin learns that the Chancellor is a Sith.

The shows are budgeted at 1 million dollars per episode. Is that expensive in termsn of television budget? For instance, how does that compare to the budgets for other sci-fi shows such as Battlestar Galactica or Stargate: SG-1?

Here's another tidbit regarding the 2009 live-action series, thanks to TheForce.net:

Quote:

Peter Mayhew and Daniel Logan are at the New York Comic Con this weekend and IGN scored some pretty interesting scoop. Here's a passage from an online article by Steven Horn where the upcoming live action television series is touched upon briefly.

"As for the forthcoming live action Star Wars television show, both Mayhew and Logan would love to be involved. Logan has a meeting with Rick McCallum next week and seems eager to reprise the role. Mayhew, the sage, simply smiled and said "I think he (Chewbacca) is going to be there. He needs to be there. It's all in the lap of the gods."

Daniel Logan played the young Boba Fett in 2002's STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES. It'd be great to see him reprise the role, especially now that he'll be playing an older, more embittered version of Fett in the series. Hopefully they'll also cast Temuera Morrison who played Jango Fett in EP II and various clone troopers in EPIII.

As far as Mayhew goes, it'd be nice to see a familiar face such as Chewbacca once again. Who doesn't love Chewie? ;)

When discussing Clone Wars animated he mentions the following:

- A new female Jedi padawan name Osoka. Same alien race as Jedi Shaak Ti.
- Young Boba Fett may appear
- 100 episodes (1/2 hour each)
- No STAR WARS eps 7-9 "The Skywalkers are done."
- Lucas closed by telling the fans, "Star Wars is not dead. It's gonna get better and better. Especially in the next few years."

George Lucas offered relatively few new clues Saturday about his plans to move the next generation of the "Star Wars" franchise into television, though he did spend much of his time denouncing the blockbuster mentality of the movie business, calling TV "a lot more fun than doing features."

Interviewed as part of the Museum of Television & Radio's Paley Festival, Lucas said that he's currently in production on 100 installments of a 3-D animated series, "Clone Wars," which is similar to the micro-series of shorts that Cartoon Network aired earlier. The plan is to complete the episodes in-house, he said, and only then offer them to a network.

thumbs up Okay. With that in mind, rank the Star Wars films in the order you like them, #1 being the the one you like the most. How I rank them in my own mind:

1. Star Wars-A New Hope(1977)
2. The Empire Strikes Back(1980)
3. Return Of The Jedi(1983)
4. Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith(2005)
5. Star Wars Episode 2: The Clone Wars(2002)
6. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace(1999)

I like all of them, just some a good bit more than others. I definitely like the older films more. I became more attached to the characters, by far, in the older titles, than I did in the newer ones. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I'd rank the films in the exact same order, Lee. :)

My youngest brother, Skeet and I used to 'watch' these films together on Sunday nights. if I wasn't working. We'd call each other, start the VHS at the same time and watch/talk about the film, then halfway through the film, we'd hang up and the person who had made the initial call would receive the call back and we'd finish 'watching' the film, together. I have been a Star Wars fan since first watching the first film in this franchise back in 1977, when I was fifteen years old. I was blown away by it, as was just about everyone I knew in high school that had seen it. I can tell you there was great anticipation for the sequel, which hit theaters in 1980, and was arguably better than the original. Though the older films in this series are my favorites, and because I grew more attached to the characters in them, I also enjoyed the newer films, which are actually prequels leading up to the 1977 movie.

My favorite character of the newer "Star Wars" films is unquestionably Obi-Wan Kenobi, well played by veteran actor Ewan McGregor. McGregor's acting ably personified the dashing, noble, honest, and unselfish character of this great Jedi knight, from his role as apprentice to full fledged Jedi, climaxing with his brutal, and tragic, battle with his former friend and protege Anakin Skywalker. I liked Hayden Christiansen's performance as well, though I often found myself wanting a little more out of Mr. Christiansen, from an acting perspective, in bringing out the gradually increasing moodiness, moral uncertainty, and hostility that all factored in to his fateful decision with Mace Windu and his fall into the dark side of "The Force". Just my opinion. shifty eyes

Still not release date for the starwars series yet although I hear that at the very least Vader, yoda and the Emporer will be in it but as for Obi One I can not see it.

The series will more be around the start of the rebellion and possible old favorites like chewbacca and Lando Calrissian will appear.

Courtesy of the bbc website.

Two Star Wars TV series will follow the latest movie in the hit film franchise, director George Lucas has said.
Animated show Clone Wars, currently broadcast as three-minute episodes, will become "a 3D animated" series of 30-minute shows, he said.

It would be followed by a live-action series featuring characters from the six Star Wars movies, he added.

"We're probably not going to start that for about a year," he told a Star Wars convention in Indianapolis.

'Step away'

The latest Star Wars film, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, is released in most countries on 19 May.

The Clone Wars "micro-series" has had 25 three-minute episodes on Cartoon Network, taking the story up to Revenge of the Sith.

Mr Lucas told the Celebration III convention the live action TV series would be similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark spin-off The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

"Like on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, we want to write all the stories for the entire first season all at once," he said.

Star Wars creator George Lucas said the sixth film would be the last
"I'm going to get it started, and hire the show runners and all of that, then I'll probably step away."

He said the live action series would feature stories taking place between movie episodes three and four - Revenge of the Sith and the original 1977 Star Wars movie.

Lucas said he "never considered" extending the Stars Wars story beyond episode six - Return of the Jedi.

"To be very honest with you, I never ever thought of anything that happened beyond episode six," he said.

"It's the Darth Vader story. It starts with him being a young boy and it ends with him dying. I never ever really considered ever taking that particular story further."

Mr Lucas said the live action series would feature some existing Star Wars characters - but would not elaborate.

"There's a lot of issues that are connected, but you won't necessarily see a lot of the people that are connected," he said.

Empire favourite

No broadcast dates for either series have been announced.

More than 30,000 fans attended the convention. Away from Star Wars, Mr Lucas added a fourth Indiana Jones movie was "definitely in the works".

Meanwhile, The Empire Strikes Back has been named the favourite Star Wars movie in a poll of more than 40,000 readers of film magazine Empire.

Han Solo was voted the favourite hero, Chewbacca was top alien and X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles was favourite minor character.

We've had a few local things. I didn't go to C4 cause I didn't want to go all the way to L.A. and pay way too much for everything. We all are going to the Screamnig Tiki Pop Culture Con in youngstown Ohio. I really want to go to G Fest this july too. But I dress as Darth Maul and Obi Wan Kenobi. As a Group we do alot of charity events such as we do an event every November at the Liberty theater Showing A Star Wars movie, this year's movie is Return of the Jedi. 100% of all of the money raised goes to a charity called " Shoes that Fit" "STF" purchases coats, shoes and other clothing things for children in need here in the Southern Illinois area. Last year we sold every showing. It was great. The theater owners are great to work with, too. I'd love to show some Godzilla movies this summer or something. Here's a slideshow of alot of stuff that happened that day.

While looking at Ray Park's role as Darth Maul I was surprised to see so many negative reviews for Star Wars Episode I-The Phantom Menace(1999). One of the reviews I read blasted this film. I admit it's probably my least favorite SW film and it does feel "sterile" at times(without much personality and just a lot of CGI) but I still liked it overall. confused

Honestly, the prequel films don't get enough respect. I enjoy all six Star Wars films and don't understand the venom spewed at eps I-III. Revenge of the Sith is easily my favorite Star Wars film, after The Empire Strikes Back.

The Phantom Menace is an underrated Star Wars film. Liam Neeson put in an excellent performance as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and the lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul was amazing. Also, TPM has one of my favorite Star Wars moments: Qui-Gon using his lightsaber to melt through blast doors in an attempt to capture Nute Gunray. That scene showcases the true power of a Jedi and his lightsaber.

I agree! The Phantom Menace had one of the best scores by John Williams. The Best Lightsaber fight in all 6 movies. Liam Neeson played a great Jedi Master in Qui Gon Jinn.

Thank you, Rodan70! Nice to have someone share in the love for the prequel trilogy.

Even though the Star Wars movies have ended it's still a great time to be a fan. We've got the CGI animated Star Wars: Clone Wars series coming out this year, a live action series(!) in the works, plenty of books to read, and cool comics (Star Wars Legacy).

My favorite film saga is FAR from over.
