For some time now we've been hearing from George Lucas and Lucasfilm Ltd. that there is a live-action Star Wars television series in the works. The purpose of this thread is to serve as a bulletin board for SWTV info. If you hear any new info regarding this exciting project feel free to tack it up here. Let's keep the Force alive at Monsterland. I'll get it started:

From: http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3484376 :

Quote:

MARCH 15th, 2006:

The series will focus on the missing years between Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars movie, released in 1977.

Producer Rick McCullum said at Monday night's Empire Awards, "We're very excited--we just got confirmation George Lucas has committed to writing the Star Wars TV series.

"I guess this is the news all fans have been waiting to hear."

Filming on the TV series is expected to commence next year.

October 7, 2005:

ComingSoon.net attended the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith DVD junket at Skywalker Ranch on Thursday, October 6th. At the event, "Star Wars" producer Rick McCallum talked about both the new 3-D animated Clone Wars series and the live-action series in development.

He added that "the live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007 and we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction... It is going to be much darker, much grittier, it's much more character-based. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between 'Episode III' and 'Episode IV' with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other novels and other things. So, we're really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series."

Asked where the live-action series will be shot and in what kind of format, McCallum said that "principal photography will take place all around the world, probably with a base in Sydney. And, yes, we will be shooting in hi-def. Or, if anything else evolves within the next 12 months, you know, that would replace hi-def. I don't see that happening, but there may be new and more, or less expensive cameras with more optical imagery or optical discs that we record on. But basically it will be hi-def, yes."

Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda in the films, was also present and addressed a question whether or not he and Yoda will be part of the two new series. "Rick and I haven't talked about it yet. I am involved in the animated series right now. We're here at the Ranch as Rick said and we're currently working on the project and I'm very excited about that. The live-action is a little further out, so we haven't had those discussions yet. But knowing George and knowing the franchise there's going to be animated characters in there, we just haven't discussed them yet."

Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine, was asked a similar question about revisiting his character in the TV series. "Nobody really knows the details of the television series, I don't think that's because people are being particularly coy. I just think a lot of things haven't been decided yet. But I know that George's intention is to follow one of the characters who's been less highlighted up to now, but has been very popular with audiences. And sure, if it's the period between the movies, the Emperor has to be referred to. But you'll remember he was referred to often without actually appearing in the first Star Wars movie. And Peter Cushing was his very effective representative. So, I suspect there might be a number of very effective representatives, but you know, I always answer my telephone."

So there ya go. That's about all we know about the show for now but I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have more concrete info and possibly some photos. THANK GOD Star Wars is not over yet!

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas has lost a long court battle in the UK in which Lucas sued to stop a British prop maker from making and selling replicas of the stormtrooper helmets used in the various Star Wars films. The court did order the prop maker to limit sales of his replicas to the U.K. and prohibited him from selling any of them to buyers in the United States. I don't care that he does it, but I do wonder why he does it. Maybe he just want to annoy the purists. The funny thing is that if you are that die-hard about Star Wars, you are probably going to buy the new set anyway.

Purists are over-reacting here. Lucas has said a million times that he won't be releasing the original, untouched version of the trilogy on blu-ray because the new one is closer to his "vision" of star wars, but I think he acknowledges that some fans have their own "vision" and prefer the original trilogy the way it was released in theaters. He'll probably release the un-tweaked versions a few years from now. And I'll be ready and waiting for it.

Still, I wouldn't mind it if he still corrected the actual mistakes in the movies like he did in the imminent release, like that shot of Vader and Luke's lightsabers crossing in front of the Emporer, and other minor flawed details like that.

I would imagine that there would still be considerable "shock value" for many watching the scene in The Return Of The Jedi(1983) in which Princess Leia wears that skimpy, bikini style costume while being held captive by Jabba The Hut. winky

I bought the blu-ray set when it came out. It looks great and the changes (which were very minor) didn't bother me at all. Some changes were nice improvements over the previous DVD box sets: color corrections to lightsabers and effects tweaks like Wicket blinking, and tighter editing in the Han/Greedo shootout. Han still doesn't shoot first, but it's more of a simultaneous exchange.

Gotta say, my enthusiasm for Star Wars is at such an ebb right now. The live-action series I was looking forward to has essentially been tabled, I'm bored by the Clone Wars animated series, and the films are done. What does a Star Wars fan like me do to keep the faith?

Funny that you bring up the Clone Wars animated series, because I had been contemplating grabbing the first season on DVD and getting into it, because I just hadn't had the time yet up until recently. But I hadn't gotten anyone's advice yet on whether it was worth watching.

As far as the Blu-Ray boxed set, my girlfriend has been bugging me regarding what I want for Christmas and I've decided to ask for this six film set. Despite my disdain for episodes 1 and 2, especially the Phantom Menace which I'm not sure I can stand to ever watch again, I think this is something I would really like to own on BLU. I have the episode 4-6 box set on regular DVD but never got around to buying the prequel films.

Josh, the blu ray set is definitely worth buying. The picture quality (obviously) is excellent and a few flubs from the previous DVD's have been corrected. (i.e. Lightsabers are now true to color.)

As far as the Clone Wars goes, it's an excellent series and the animation is top-notch. However, I'm at a point where I feel I've seen enough of that era. I'm ready for Lucas to focus on the period between eps. III and IV. That's what the live-action series was supposed to be all about but that's on the shelf now.

I dont really see lucas being able to do the live action TV series as what he wants to do for the series is just to much for a television budget, I would certainly pay to go watch a new set of films if they were set far enough in the future say 200+ ABY but I can't see that happening so I will just have to wait for for the TV series.

As for the animated clone wars series I have seen have a dozen random episodes and it looks pretty good although I would need to see it from the start really.

Okay, yeah, that is pretty silly.

I swear to God, if a Darth Bane trilogy isn't filmed by the time I'm a big time screenwriter, I'll be banging on Lucas's front door until he lets me do it.

After receiving the Blu Ray boxed set as a Christmas gift, I have decided to watch the films in episodical order and started with Episode 1 today. Traditionally, this film has been my least liked in the series, but I did find the Blu-Ray version to be a beautiful transfer with a stellar and rich-sounding audio track. I admittedly found this film slightly more enjoyable than my viewings in the past. Following are the things I liked/didn't like about this film:

Likes:

Liam Neeson as Qui Gon Jinn: I felt that Neeson turned in a exceptional performance as the elder Jedi in this film and probably the best acting of all characters in this film. Qui Gon was likable yet felt respected as a Jedi at the same time, displaying a caring and patient, fatherly attitude of both Obi-Wan and young Ani while still being a formidable warrior.

The soundtrack: I don't even remember seeing if John Williams was responsible for the soundtrack in this film, but I enjoyed it, particularly the score set during the Jedi fight with Darth Maul.

The Darth Maul fight scene: Although some of the jumps didn't look believable, I enjoyed the final fight scene with Darth Maul, as well as Maul's intensity and acrobatics.

Didn't Like-

Constant scene cuts: The scenes cut too frequently and the film jumped around a little much for my tastes. Some of the shorter scenes probably could have been cut entirely.

Jar Jar: I understand the purpose for the Gungans in the film and even Jar Jar, but the constant scenes of Jar Jar screwing up felt ridiculous and should have been saved for some sort of blooper reel at the end of the film.

Amidala: During the final sequences when the resistance was attempting to overtake the viceroy, Amidala was constantly at the forefront of battle, just walking through a wave of fire lazily shooting a blaster. It seems ridiculous to me that a queen would be in that situation at all, but even if you dismiss that to the extreme measures of the situation, it was still ridiculous that Amidala was traipsing through there like Superman and was not even being covered or escorted by her personal squad of soldiers. Its like the president deciding he's going to walk around East L.A. without the secret service.

For a guy who's filthy rich and will probably go down in the annals of history as one of the greatest sci-fi directors of all time, I think Lucas is probably being a bit sensitive here.

What an idiot! Not because he's defending the prequel trilogy, but because he's taking everybody's reasons for disliking it to a completely irrelevant context. We don't hate the prequel trilogy because it's "more complex," we hate it because it's complexity is so poorly handled.

That's without taking into account some things like, I don't know, terrible comedic characters, terrible romantic scenes, trying to give the Jedi a biological trait that defines them (the "m" word) as opposed to letting them remain mysterious and seemingly CHOSEN to be special by some strange, incomprehensible entity, among other things.

We "Americans" tend to like complex, tragic stories, believe it or not. It's basic human nature. The dominating trend goes "Angst is art" (though not inherently so, nor is art limited to angst or tragic endings). Think about it. When's the last time you left the theater with a warm and fuzzy feeling, happy with how things turned out for our heroes? There have been satisfying endings, sure, but Iron Man's playboy antics aside, they've usually either been carefully neutral or just downright sad. I can't remember the last time I saw a new movie with a "happy" ending that I liked.

The prequel trilogy is... inferior (most would say BAD) because Lucas lost his touch. Plain and simple.
