For some time now we've been hearing from George Lucas and Lucasfilm Ltd. that there is a live-action Star Wars television series in the works. The purpose of this thread is to serve as a bulletin board for SWTV info. If you hear any new info regarding this exciting project feel free to tack it up here. Let's keep the Force alive at Monsterland. I'll get it started:

From: http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3484376 :

Quote:

MARCH 15th, 2006:

The series will focus on the missing years between Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars movie, released in 1977.

Producer Rick McCullum said at Monday night's Empire Awards, "We're very excited--we just got confirmation George Lucas has committed to writing the Star Wars TV series.

"I guess this is the news all fans have been waiting to hear."

Filming on the TV series is expected to commence next year.

October 7, 2005:

ComingSoon.net attended the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith DVD junket at Skywalker Ranch on Thursday, October 6th. At the event, "Star Wars" producer Rick McCallum talked about both the new 3-D animated Clone Wars series and the live-action series in development.

He added that "the live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007 and we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction... It is going to be much darker, much grittier, it's much more character-based. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between 'Episode III' and 'Episode IV' with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other novels and other things. So, we're really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series."

Asked where the live-action series will be shot and in what kind of format, McCallum said that "principal photography will take place all around the world, probably with a base in Sydney. And, yes, we will be shooting in hi-def. Or, if anything else evolves within the next 12 months, you know, that would replace hi-def. I don't see that happening, but there may be new and more, or less expensive cameras with more optical imagery or optical discs that we record on. But basically it will be hi-def, yes."

Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda in the films, was also present and addressed a question whether or not he and Yoda will be part of the two new series. "Rick and I haven't talked about it yet. I am involved in the animated series right now. We're here at the Ranch as Rick said and we're currently working on the project and I'm very excited about that. The live-action is a little further out, so we haven't had those discussions yet. But knowing George and knowing the franchise there's going to be animated characters in there, we just haven't discussed them yet."

Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine, was asked a similar question about revisiting his character in the TV series. "Nobody really knows the details of the television series, I don't think that's because people are being particularly coy. I just think a lot of things haven't been decided yet. But I know that George's intention is to follow one of the characters who's been less highlighted up to now, but has been very popular with audiences. And sure, if it's the period between the movies, the Emperor has to be referred to. But you'll remember he was referred to often without actually appearing in the first Star Wars movie. And Peter Cushing was his very effective representative. So, I suspect there might be a number of very effective representatives, but you know, I always answer my telephone."

So there ya go. That's about all we know about the show for now but I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have more concrete info and possibly some photos. THANK GOD Star Wars is not over yet!

Anyone around here want to see Luke Skywalker in the seventh "Star Wars" film?

http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/174147-will-the-rebels-return-to-yavin-4-in-star-wars-episode-vii
No. Just no. If they reboot the series there should be new characters. Look what happened to Indy Jones . . . They had a 50-60 year old playing a 20 year old job.

shifty eyes
I say yes. Simply because an older, wiser Jedi master like Luke would easily pass. And as I said before. I think mixing a cast of old and new characters would work. Luke (and Leia) were the last of the Jedi. Who better than to teach a new Jedi apprentice maybe.

I was going to say; maybe have them as council members or training a new group of Jedi. Either way, I don't really have a major preference. I had pretty much lost all hope for the Star Wars front until I heard about this, but it'll take something amazing for me to invest strong feelings in it again.

I'm actually kind of glad they're talking about live-action. I'm a little tired of the cartoons. I don't hate them, but how cool would it be to see a good Star Wars show with real people? It's not high on my list of upcoming shows, but I would be up for it, should it ever happen.

This is a Surprise to me.
I was guessing it would be a Mainstream Director, and I was right.
But to Hire the Director of all the new Star Trek Movies, is far from what I would have guessed.
As someone pointed out to me previously, It's like owning Coke and Pepsi at the same time.
After some thought, I love the Idea. big grin
And am sure this will end up a Good Thing.
Previously, I didn't know if it would be, simply because of the shock of Having another episode come out.

Some things to predict, More Mystery in The Ad Campaigns to come in the Years following up to it, and Lens Flares. Lots of Lens Flares. boredd

Well, it's hard to get the sh*tty taste of the previous entries out of our mouths, but the fact that Lucas isn't going to be cracking the whip on everybody is a good thing. It seems like they generally give a damn about this; it doesn't feel like just a ploy to squeeze money out of everybody.

If they do make new ones, I bet there won't be fifteen different DVD/Blu-ray releases like there is with the OT (which I've always thought was a sh*tty way for them to make money).

The only downside is that if he fails, he shall forever be known as Jar Jar Abrams.... sickko

But honestly, I'm looking forward to his take on the Star Wars universe, even though it will mean lens flares in abundance.

Han Solo, maybe. Boba Fett, no. The prequel trilogy ruined my interest in Fett's character, and I never really cared about him anyway. I can't understand why people think he's so great.

And I really don't care about solo features anyway. The only people's origin stories I'd really care about would be Solo, and maybe Chewie or Lando. I want to hear the story about Han and Chewie's friendship; how they met and so on. I haven't actually read the book, but it sounds like a great story.

Is Harrison Ford going to reprise his role of "Han Solo" in the seventh "Star Wars" film that will be directed by J.J. Abrams?

http://robojapan.blogspot.com/2013/02/harrison-ford-to-return-as-han-solo-in.html

Nothing against this actor but he's IMO too old to reprise the role for anything more than a cameo appearance in this movie. winky

All this hype isn't doing a thing for me anymore. If anything, it's getting more annoying with every piece of news. The last time I saw Mark Hamill he looked awful; in other words, he did not age well. Having said that, though, I do not have a problem with recurring characters. That's all I really have to add, other than I hope they don't do something stupid, like bring Vader or Boba Fett back to life, which I've heard more than once regarding this project.

As for the CG, I don't care anymore. CG is a staple of modern-day effects, and I wish people would stop harping on it. People still talk about it like it's something so important, when it isn't anymore. I just get tired of, whenever there's going to be a creature-feature-type movie, the first and loudest question always being "will they use CGI !?!?" Of course they will. This is the "now."

Just to clarify, I'm not calling anybody here out, so please don't be offended. This is just something that has built up in me for several years now, and it feels good to let it out every once in a while. As to the question at hand, as long as it looks better than the crap they pulled in the last movies, I'm all in. I would like to see some practical creature effects, to, you know, give it that classic Star Wars feel, but we'll see.

That wouldn't really bother me; as green death said, it seems a bit much, but I don't care.

And with J.J. Abrams directing? How could you not be at least a little interested?

I look at it this way, at least so far: At least they are trying to actually do something with the franchise. It's a great franchise, and didn't deserve to be relegated to what it was when Lucas had complete control. Hell, I would have given it three, maybe four more years and he would have re-released the original trilogy again, and re-released the sh*tty prequels both on video and in theaters again (and both in 3D and IMAX, too). Besides the TV shows and other merchandise, that's all Star Wars was for years. It was a joke, and a slap in the face to Star Wars fans. Now, it looks like they're actually trying to make real money from it, instead of making customers buy the same sh*t every four or five years.

Long story short: bring it on. They actually seem to give a crap about it now, so let's see what they have to bring to the table.

I know it's old news, but what does everybody think of the announcement that this movie will be relying mostly on actual sets, locations, and practical effects?

Personally, I feel like it's a good sign of this trilogy moving in the right direction. Don't get me wrong, I love the WORLDS that Lucas was trying to present with the prequel trilogy, but the over-abundance of CG sort of plagues all three of those movies. Everything looks too clean and polished (which I guess is the point at least half the time) and aesthetically it's hard to reconcile the prequel trilogy with the originals.

Speaking of aesthetics, this is a minor point, but I really hope the lightsabers incorporate a bit of the original trilogy look and feel to them. Compare how the blades looked in Empires Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to how they looked in any of the prequel movies - the way the sabers in the older films seem to go flat when viewed from particular angles or are swung a certain way. In the newer films they seem like solid, round shafts of light, very static and honestly kinda blunt-looking, like clubs instead of sabres. It might simply be dated technology at work in the older films, but personally I feel like it gives them an interesting dynamic, making them look and feel more like BLADES of light that cut through anything rather than RODS of light that just so happen to leave cauterized wounds. I guess in the prequels you get a little bit of blade-yness, but it's mostly from the motion trails rather than the blade itself. Again, it's a minor point and the sabers look cool in EVERY movie, but it would be a nice touch that I'd like to see in the upcoming films.

Want to see the first official (teaser) trailer for Star Wars-The Force Awakens(2015)? Of course you do: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3322751/star-wars-vii-force-awakens-trailer/

It's a teaser(about 88 seconds long) but it gives us some tantalizing glances. I think this movie, set for a theatrical release in December, 2015 will be a major financial success. CrowT1

Lightsabers with crossguards? That actually looks amazingly practical. Can't believe we never saw that in a movie before now!

I LOVE the look of everything. It feels like the original trilogy, but with the appropriate technological advances given the gap between this and ROTJ.
