For some time now we've been hearing from George Lucas and Lucasfilm Ltd. that there is a live-action Star Wars television series in the works. The purpose of this thread is to serve as a bulletin board for SWTV info. If you hear any new info regarding this exciting project feel free to tack it up here. Let's keep the Force alive at Monsterland. I'll get it started:

From: http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3484376 :

Quote:

MARCH 15th, 2006:

The series will focus on the missing years between Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars movie, released in 1977.

Producer Rick McCullum said at Monday night's Empire Awards, "We're very excited--we just got confirmation George Lucas has committed to writing the Star Wars TV series.

"I guess this is the news all fans have been waiting to hear."

Filming on the TV series is expected to commence next year.

October 7, 2005:

ComingSoon.net attended the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith DVD junket at Skywalker Ranch on Thursday, October 6th. At the event, "Star Wars" producer Rick McCallum talked about both the new 3-D animated Clone Wars series and the live-action series in development.

He added that "the live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007 and we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction... It is going to be much darker, much grittier, it's much more character-based. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between 'Episode III' and 'Episode IV' with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other novels and other things. So, we're really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series."

Asked where the live-action series will be shot and in what kind of format, McCallum said that "principal photography will take place all around the world, probably with a base in Sydney. And, yes, we will be shooting in hi-def. Or, if anything else evolves within the next 12 months, you know, that would replace hi-def. I don't see that happening, but there may be new and more, or less expensive cameras with more optical imagery or optical discs that we record on. But basically it will be hi-def, yes."

Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda in the films, was also present and addressed a question whether or not he and Yoda will be part of the two new series. "Rick and I haven't talked about it yet. I am involved in the animated series right now. We're here at the Ranch as Rick said and we're currently working on the project and I'm very excited about that. The live-action is a little further out, so we haven't had those discussions yet. But knowing George and knowing the franchise there's going to be animated characters in there, we just haven't discussed them yet."

Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine, was asked a similar question about revisiting his character in the TV series. "Nobody really knows the details of the television series, I don't think that's because people are being particularly coy. I just think a lot of things haven't been decided yet. But I know that George's intention is to follow one of the characters who's been less highlighted up to now, but has been very popular with audiences. And sure, if it's the period between the movies, the Emperor has to be referred to. But you'll remember he was referred to often without actually appearing in the first Star Wars movie. And Peter Cushing was his very effective representative. So, I suspect there might be a number of very effective representatives, but you know, I always answer my telephone."

So there ya go. That's about all we know about the show for now but I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have more concrete info and possibly some photos. THANK GOD Star Wars is not over yet!

Aren't we supposed to get a preview for this soon? Like during the Super Bowl or something? I'm interested to see what it looks like.

A new trailer will air tomorrow during a football game, with tickets going on sale immediately after it finishes playing. High hopes that it will be officially released online immediately after it airs, as well.

That new trailer is here!

I've watched it approximately five times. First time I about had a heart attack. Second time I nearly cried. Third I took in as many details I may have missed. Fourth I watched just because I wanted to see it again and replicate the feelings of prior viewings. Fifth viewing-see previous sentence.

I'm most interested in Kylo Ren. As a antagonist he seems awfully obsessed with Vader and what 'he started.'
The new hyper drive effect, Han saying "It's all true" and the epic score. I'm so excited to see this film. I even like the two new main leads. Finn and Rey.
It doesn't look cheesy, but it doesn't look overly dark or serious either. The Nostalgia is strong with this one, and for once I feel like that's a good thing and not just something to ride on.
These teasers and trailers are the only ones I've noticed that exceeded my expectations each and every time.

I grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS and then seeing the prequels from then on in Theaters. It seems everyone has a Star Wars story to tell and what it means to them personally.
Probably why this franchise is such a big deal.
Science Fiction meets Fantasy. A futuristic and timeless fairy tale.

A perfect trailer - its gets me hyped without spoiling much if anything. I could watch this from here to the day I go to see it in theaters and not get tired of it. thumbz up

Some thoughts about what we see in this trailer:

A massive dogfight between star-fighters just above ground level, rather than in space - that's something we haven't seen in the movies before, and I'm really looking forward to it.

The scene where Ren duels Finn in the snow looks like it'll be a curve-stomp duel. Finn looks like he's in way over his head (or maybe that's just his natural expression. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised), and Ren looks REALLY determined to get his hands on the lightsaber Vader used in his last days as a Jedi.

Rey looks like she's going through something of a disney princess arc (without being a princess... at first). She's gotta be Han and Princess Leia's daughter - the resemblance is too perfect. But it looks like she's unaware of her heritage or has turned her back on it. As far as she's concerned, she's nothing more than a simple scavenger, and the wistful look in her eye when the ship takes off in the distance suggests that she's dreaming of "more," as every disney princess does.

Kylo Ren doesn't look nearly as cool without a hood on.

If you take a minute to really think about the idea of the Starkiller Base - the idea that it's a super weapon made from a hollowed-out planet - that's even more diabolical than the Death Star. It's a planet-destroying canon which may or may not have a weak-spot similar to the Death Star's, but if you try to exploit such a weakness, you're not JUST killing millions of enemy troops in the base's interior, you're also wiping out any and all indigenous lifeforms and intelligent beings on the surface who probably don't want anything to do with the Empire. The new weapon isn't just destroying planets, it's holding one hostage!

Judging by the lighting and the flaming rubble everywhere, the shot of (what is probably) Luke reaching out to R2D2 looks like it's in the same scene as Kylo Ren and the new stormtroopers landing, which also looks to be in the same scene as Ren swinging his cross-guard saber at the camera. I think part of Ren's goal is to hunt down and kill Luke, which may be a very crucial scene near the beginning or the end of the movie. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how the confrontation turns out, since everyone from the original trilogy no longer has "main character status" protecting them anymore.

My guess is that they will kill off at least one of the "old three" (Luke, Han, or Leia) in this film. Between the difficulty of getting Harrison Ford to come back, and the severe aging of all three in relation to the 4-6 trilogy, I just can't see them being around long or having enough screen time to justify paying them ridiculous amounts to keep them on board.

I read a few days ago that Harrison Ford suffered a severe injury(to his leg and ankle) during filming that delayed production for a couple of months. In addition to the "age" factor you mention, Josh I have to wonder if the actor really wants to risk physical injury again to appear in a sequel. winky

I went to go see it on December 21 for my birthday. To be honest I was a bit disappointed. Without spoiling anything, I thought the story was sort of a rehash of the original 1977 film. I also think that rebooting the series was a bad idea. I think they should have made a movie about the Expanded Universe as outlined in the Star Wars Novels (Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Yuuzhan Vong etc.).

Agreed - the story, in many ways, was a rehash of a new hope. While the film wasn't awful by any means, I think Abrams chose to keep it "safe" as opposed to forging with a completely new idea and concepts, which dissapointed me a bit. It was a much better movie than "The Phantom Menace", in terms of acting quality, special effects, and pacing. But that film did take more risks and to its credit, was far more ambitious.

The new bad guy with the lightsaber that has the laser cross-guard.

I saw it on Christmas Eve, which is apparently the best time to go see the newest blockbuster if you live anywhere smaller than a big city, as most people will be getting ready for Christmas Day and there were only 7 people in the theater including myself.

I've been chewing over my thoughts on the movie ever since, examining what I liked and didn't like about it. I agree somewhat with what josh TX and Bradman have said so far - it hits a lot of the same beats that A New Hope does in terms of plot. It seems like, after years of people bashing the prequel trilogy, Abrams and everyone else involved in making this one felt the need to prove something - that they could be trusted to make a Star Wars movie that resembles the original films before they struck out in a new direction, and I'm hoping this movie satisfies that need so that the next two films of the trilogy aren't just copies of Empire and Jedi.

On the other hand, even if it does borrow a lot of the story from A New Hope, it does introduce some pretty interesting stuff and new themes to make it worth while. I love the look and feel of just about everything in this movie - it all looks like the stuff we saw in the OT, but everything about it aside from the Millennium Falcon feels like a natural progression of the tech we saw in the original films: the holograms don't have that blue tint to them anymore, the aesthetics have a familiar-yet-updated feel to them, and the performance of a lot of the vehicles and weapons in the film are improved. I love how Chewbacca's crossbow has been upgraded so that the lasers send people flying, and I like that the Stormtroopers now have weapons that can protect them from lightsaber strikes.

I also liked the idea that all of the new characters in this film (aside from Commander Snoke) seem very young and inexperienced. Even the commanding officers of the First Order and Kylo Ren himself are youthful and only semi-seasoned at best, eager to prove themselves worthy of carrying on the legacy of the old Empire. It's a sharp contrast to the original trilogy, where everyone aside from Luke, Han and Leia were old veterans who carried the weight of decades upon their shoulders and were much more sure of themselves. I feel like the characters are all speaking for the filmmakers - they're trying to reassure the audience that they can do right by the original trilogy, even though they still have a lot to prove.

The only thing I'm really undecided about so far is Commander Snoke, the Emperor stand-in for this movie. I like that he's a Muun as opposed to a human: there's potential there for a particular theory regarding his character - that he might actually be Darth Plagueis, Emporer's Palpatine's former master who, contrary to Palpatine's statement in Episode III, might be very much alive. I like that he's a dark-side user without really calling himself a Sith. He's broken away from the Sith Order and created a new dark side cult called the Knights of Ren, of which Kylo is a member and "Ren" seems to be the new "Darth."

What I don't like is that Snoke doesn't really project quite the level of menace that I think Abrams was going for with him. For now, he's just a guy in the background. Maybe he'll seem like a bigger bad guy in hindsight once the trilogy is complete (as the entire film will hopefully feel more satisfying). I don't like his name either. "Snoke." When I hear that, I don't really get a villain kind of vibe. If I'm about to be introduced to a guy named Snoke, I'm expecting some idiotic Jersey Shore punk like "Snooki" or "The Situation." Or the New Jersey version of the Smurfs. Seriously, who's idea was it to name him Snoke? I just can't take that seriously.

I agree that that was one of the redeeming features of the movie.

I think another problem I had with Episode VII is that the characters of Luke, Han and Leia haven't developed much since Episode VI, 30 years earlier. In the expanded universe (As outlined in the novels and comics) Luke founds a new Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, eleven years after the destruction of the first Death Star, while Han and Leia become leaders of the New Republic and actually marry four years after ROTJ and have three children.
I love the B-Movies from the 50's, 60's and 70's. topper

I've read alot of the Darth Plagueis theories and they are all very interesting. There are also several believable theories going around that Leia is behind it, and that more will be revealed in the next episode regarding why her relationship with Han was so tumultuous and why Kylo Ren said what he said to Han in that "moment". It would also explain Luke's reaction to Rey, regardless of the "Rey lineage" theories.

If Snoke (I agree the name is stupid) is actually Plagueis it would be an interesting way to connect the new films to the older trilogy to some degree.

It's amazing how quickly my opinion on The Clone Wars changed over the course of watching it. I went into it more out of curiosity than anything else. I had been avoided it, viewing it as a non-cannon series made strictly for little kids until I heard that it was really quite the contrary - the first season was certainly lighter and softer than all the rest, but it quickly plunged into some pretty shadowy territory after that, getting darker and darker as it built up to the events of Revenge of the Sith and even heavily foreshadowing the horrors to come without making it so obvious that the characters would immediately catch on. It also presented us with a re-imagined Anakin Skywalker - he still looks like Ani, but he's not the whiny, entitled, petulant brat that always seemed to get on the other Jedis' nerves in the movies. This series does a far better job of portraying the loyal, compassionate friend that Obi-wan so fondly remembered in A New Hope, and I would love to see the team that created this series make their own version of the prequel films using this interpretation of Anakin (and all the other characters as they portray them, for that matter) because he doesn't mesh at all with what we see in the movies, and yet I get the feeling that their version of the prequels would turn out far better than what we actually got.

In fact, most of the characters I was dreading in this series are incredibly charismatic or at least turned out to be incredibly cool. For example, my initial opinion upon seeing promotional material for the western-themed Duros Bounty Hunter Cad Bane was that he'd stick out like a sore thumb, never meshing with the characters from the movies and be an annoying cowboy stereotype, but he's turned out to be my favorite Star Wars villain. Ever. In fact, I'll just come out and say it - IMO he's way cooler than Boba Fett ever was.

Hell, Ashoka Tano was the character I was dreading the most. I feared that she'd be nothing more than a self-insert character for younger star wars fans at best, and an annoying scrappy-doo type of character at worst. I feared she would be an example of blatant disregard for series cannon, as the sole prerequisite for a Jedi Knight to become a Master is to train a Padawan to knighthood, which Anakin clearly hadn't done before RotS. However, she became one of my favorite characters in the series even before her final story arc, and her presence turns out to be free of continuity-snags.

If I have one or two real complaints about the series, it's that there seems to be a tradition for each season to have at least one episode centered on Jar-Jar Binks, and try as they might, even the writing team for this series can't make him funny or even remotely likable. And bless them, they're really trying - they even come close to success in the Netflix-only 6th season - but they just can't quite make him work. On the other hand, each season also as a comedy episode or two centered around R2-D2, and C-3PO is sometimes along for the ride. Those episodes usually turn out pretty well, although Season 5 gives Artoo a complete 4 episode story arc as part of a secret squad of Astromech droids led by a tiny alien general, and while fun, the arc seems a bit too long for its own good. Mind you, I wouldn't mind reading a spin-off comic where the D-squad is, from time to time, reassembled and sent out on missions for the Republic or even the Rebel Alliance. But taking up such a large chunk of a season like that is a bit much.

I'm working my way through the Clone Wars series right now. I just finished season 4 last night and will probably start in on season 5 this week. I started incredibly skeptical, but the series has definitely won me over. Seasons 1 and 2 were just "ok" to me but beginning with season 3 I really started to feel a deeper connection and interest in the characters. Season 4 was really good, the best so far.

I would agree pretty much entirely with your assessment of Anakin. The series make me wish that Hayden Christensen either would have been a better actor, or the script would have been better written for him. Most people bash Christensen's acting but I don't think his performance in the films was entirely his fault. Especially considering Natalie Portman's acting was pretty horrid too, and she's a much more renowned actor.

Back to the series, I initially didn't like Cad Bane at all but he won me over in the story arc from season 4 in which Ob-Wan faked his death to learn of Bane and Dooku's attempt on Palpatine. His character seemed to grow by lengths and bounds during that series, and he went from being just another angry bounty hunter to someone with a much more unique personality. I also really like the direction that season 4 took with Asaj Ventress. She's grown on me and I actually find myself rooting for her though I expect she will be killed before the series ends.

Just finished the final episode of "The Lost Missions", thus ending the Clone Wars series. I'm going to go ahead and watch ROTS again for continuity purposes, then start watching Star Wars Rebels.

There were some great episodes in the last season and a half, some things that really helped flesh out the third film much better. Order 66 is no longer nearly as open ended and confusing anymore; at least there's some reference and science behind it now. Yoda having learned to manifest his consciousness in a physical form after death was also an interesting way to wind things down, and a worthy viewing.

If I'm bothered by anything at all, it is that several loose ends were still left untied. Unless they are covered in a book somewhere, we never find out what happens with Asaj Ventress, Cad Bane, and a few other significant characters from the series. Season 5 wrapped up a few things, but didn't take as many risks as I wanted. I know there were additional episodes that were supposed to feature the "fall" of Darth Maul, and I did read that story in comic book form. But now all I can do is wonder is some of the other characters will show up in rebels, like Asoka has.

Before you do that, I recommend checking out the unfinished episodes of The Clone Wars TV series which you can find on Youtube. There are at least a couple of multi-episode story arcs you can find, and The Death on Utupau story arc in particular shows some of the impact the end of Season 5 had on Anakin, and he's amusingly more irritable than usual before Obi-wan finally makes him confront it directly.

And yes, I said "unfinished." All of the necessary models and scenes are there, and so are all the voice acting and sound effects, but the models are untextured, the animation is rough. All the same, you completely forget you're looking at an incomplete episode once you're a few minutes into each one.

Seen it and love it. I like the idea that we're getting an actual war film in a series called Star Wars, and the meticulous recreation of the original trilogy look and feel is most impressive, not to mention it's amazing that we also have new stormtrooper designs that fit right in with the old look. The overall look and feel of the trailer suggests a sort of WWII, "South Pacific Theater in Space" kinda vibe which I absolutely love. thumbz up

What do you think about the casting of Donnie Yen and his use of a katana-like weapon to cut down stormtroopers in the film? It's really the only thing that I'm kind of uneasy about. I like Yen as an actor, but I'm skeptical of how he will fit into this film and I'm a bit concerned about the sudden implementation of "ancient" sword styling in a Star Wars film. It can be done right, and I don't mind seeing it, I just hope the concept isn't overblown.

I don't think it'll be a problem. The Star Wars galaxy is a BIG place, and I'm willing to roll with pretty much any new idea or character as long as they don't try to tie everything together with pre-existing material in ways that wouldn't work or would diminish the scope of the universe (an example of tying something together the wrong way would be making Jen and Rey related to either each other or to some pre-existing character in the mythos).

Donnie Yen doesn't feel too out of place within the context of the trailer. The south-pacific war vibe I mentioned earlier definitely helps in that regard, and I personally feel the presence of swords and martial arts in Star Wars needs no justification, so long as it is realistically handled. I can easily buy the idea that there would be people in the star wars universe who would be very similar to the kinds of people you meet in real life who collect and train with swords - usually out of nothing more than appreciation for the weapon and its place in history - and from the trailer, it looks like Donnie's got the jump on the storm troopers, the abrupt cut-away almost seems to imply the fight doesn't last long, either.
