Did you ever come across weird stuff in Godzilla or other Toho monster movies that bothered you? Stuff that left you wondering? Here's the place to discuss those wonderings, and who knows; maybe our questions might get answered!

My question at the moment pertains to Return of Godzilla, which I just got done watching. This has been on my mind since I saw the original: Why did they put an English song in the credits? I like the song, but it seems out of place, doesn't it?
Batman? Batman? What kind of a world do we live in where a guy dressed up as a BAT gets all of my press?

I'll have to give some thought to the question posed in the above post. I'm sure I can think of a some things I've always wondered about regarding Godzilla movies.

Not really a question, but I've always found it funny how there are names attached to more obscure monsters; like Oodako, Ookondru, Mogera and whatnot when they're never stated in the film. Same goes for Shockirus. All four of the monsters above, to my knowledge, never had their names mentioned in their respected films.

I always liked that song by the Star Sisters, so it didn't seem totaly out of place. Though now, I got a good idea as to why they included it - it has to do with the box office hit from the previous year - 1983's SATOMI HAKKEN DEN.

SATOMI HAKKEN DEN was a Kadokawa-produced Fukasaku-directed adaptation of one of the most famous Japanese novels that came before the 20th century. To help the film be more successful, in Japan and in English-speaking terriroties, Kadokawa had hired American balad singer John O'Banion to do a couple of songs for the film (two were used, and the film opens and ends with his music). They picked O'Bannion because in 1982, John won the Tokyo Music Festival for "I Don't Want to Loose Your Love". After Satomi Hakken Den had ravaged both the Japanese box office and VHS sales, the single "I Don't Want This Night to End" has become a very famous love in in East Asia (you can find "American-Idol" esque videos on youtube of people singing this song).

I guess Toho wanted to immitate this and if you notice, the song the Star Sisters did for G84 is very Ballad-esque. I guess it didn't work since the song was cut from the US version and Toho saddly thought Godzilla was able to stand up to GREMILINS.

As for the names never being mentioned in the movies for Moguera and such... I claim bad writing!

^Cool piece of info.

Here's another: Antonio, emperor of Seatopia. Was his name ever mentioned in the movie?

The same thing with the girl in Space Amoeba; Ayako.

Maybe if I could read the Japanese credits I would know, but reading reviews of these two movies after seeing the actual Japanese versions of them I was like, "Crap! That's the guy's/girl's name? What the hey!"

Does anybody else get like that sometimes?

Something I've always wondered: did actor Jun Takazi ever get tired of playing serious, no nonsense characters in these Toho G films?

Also, did SPFX director Eiji Tsuburaya really eat the octopus that was used to film the sequence where the giant octopus attacks the villagers on Faroe Island in 1962's King Kong Vs Godzilla?

I've also wondered about that. The same with Yoshifumi Tajima. He always played a cop, a ship captain, or a bad guy.

I thought I'd heard something about this before. I thought it was some wannabe rumor that some dumb fan started.

We want answers! angree

All the time! I've been on Godzilla message boards and read books about Godzilla and I always ask myself, "How the hell did you know that character's name? That character HAD a name?"

Antonio? Just learned something new here today. Who knew? confuzed

I got that off of Toho Kingdom. I don't know where it came from, so your guess is as good as mine.

Anyone ever wonder, as a kid watching Godzilla movies, where and how often the monster answered the call of nature?

^I always assumed that kaiju didn't have waste excretion processes like how we know them. Except for Rodan, I really haven't seen a kaiju actualy eat anything. Godzilla lives off of Radiation therefore his waste product is his heat beam.

Minya eats mangos(or some kind of large fruit) that are tossed into his mouth by the island girl(played by Beverly Maeda) in 1967's Son Of Godzilla.

Also, in 1964's Mothra Vs Godzilla the Shobojin fairies, in a conversation with the reporter, scientist and photographer, refer to the larval Mothra "searching for food" after it hatches from the (adult) Mothra's egg.

In 1966's War Of The Gargantuas Gaira is shown picking up a terrified female: after a shot away from the monster the camera returns to Gaira who is shown moving it's mouth up and down, then spitting out the womans' clothes. There are also the missing clothes on the boat(in the lake) and those clothes beside Gaira which Sanda sees, prompting Sanda to attack Gaira with an uprooted tree. Obviously Gaira includes humans in its diet in this film.

In 1967's Gamera Vs Gyaos it's implied that Gyaos has devoured at least one person. In 1970's Gamera Vs Jiger Jiger is shown drinking water.

Ah, must have missed that one. Then again, I haven't seen that film in years. And Ebirah likes humans. Kong drinks the juice and stuff, but since he is no more than a big ape I guess that is self explanatory.

very funny

Good thing the Toho execs weren't too obsessed with anatomical accuracy regarding Kong or we might have seen a lot more than we wanted south of the border on the big ape. loco2
