Sparkiegojira, a registered member here at Monsterland Forums and It Came From Planet X, while on a bus, struck up a conversation with an interesting gentleman named Cliff Harrington. The name might not sound familiar, but if you are a fan of Godzilla movies you have seen him in King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962). He starred in the original(Japanese) version, as the helicoptor pilot, which was flying over the "mayday water signal" next to the iceberg, which Godzilla erupts out of. Mr. Harrington's line includes "Look there Al" and "It's Godzilla!". Clark(Sparkiegojira) had a nice conversation with Mr. Harrington, who was just returning to the United States from Japan, where he has lived for a long, long time. Clark West has decided to put together a "care package" of sorts for Cliff Harrington, which will include printed letters(based on e-mails) from Godzilla and kaiju fans, and some other various graphic material regarding his participation in the 1962 Toho film. Clark has informed G-Fan editor J.D. Lees and prominent G-Fan writer and contributor Brett Homenick also about his chance meeting with Mr. Harrington. For anyone here who would like to forward any letter or correspondence to Cliff Harrington(including your own personal contact info-whatever you feel comfortable or appropriate disclosing) you may do so by emailing Clark West at sparkiegojira@yahoo.com. You may also use this site's e-mail address, packmule84@yahoo.com, to do this as well. I urge anyone that is a fan of King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) to send in a brief note or letter. Clark and a few people are planning on asking Mr. Harrington for an interview, to discuss his memories and recollections of the 1962 Toho Godzilla film he was in. If anyone has any questions or comments about this feel free to post here as well. :)

I have posted a topic about Clark's encounter at Kaiju Galaxy as well. I will not be posting one at Toho Kingdom-this site has a large member base with many early teenaged members, and I do not want to run the risk of Mr. Harrington getting any prank e-mails or other correspondence.

Chatting with Mr Harrington is probably not possible Corey, but you can, if you like, send him a letter, as I have done. Clark West(aka "Sparkiegojira") is collecting letters(e-mails) that he will print out(using his printer) and put together for Mr. Harrington to read. The reason: we(the fans) want Mr. Harrington to know how fun and interesting it is to meet someone who had a role in such an important Godzilla film, and also as a sign of appreciation for his participation in it. You can e-mail a letter to Clark at sparkiegojira@yahoo.com-it can be brief, or long, or in between. Just talk a little about yourself, and how Godzilla movies are fun for you. You could talk about your own site. Talk about the movie he starred in, KK Vs Godzilla. The most important thing here is to be yourself and be genuine. Just a thought. Clark has told me that only three(3) letters have been submitted(including my own), a disappointingly low number, IMO. You may submit a letter(by e-mail) by also using this site's e-mail address: packmule84@yahoo.com. :)

Thanks for posting this. I actually ran into Harrington again for another bus ride and found out he was a William Ross dubber as well.

He is going to send me photocopies of his vintage 1960's articles (with his own photos) about Tsuburaya at work.

The thanks should go to you Sparkie, for your efforts to engage this gentlemen in friendly, but non-invasive conversation. Without your actions thus far we might not ever have a chance to hear from Mr. Harrington about his recollections of this film, and his other contributions that you mention. Kudos to you. thumbs up

I think you would like it. It is available(finally) in letterbox(widescreen format) in Region 1, released as a two-movie pack(along with 1967's King Kong Escapes), by Universal Pictures.

I bought the DVD set.
It is well worth the money, although though both DVDs are bare as bones, the picture quality of both films mostly remain solid. (especially in King Kong Escapes)

Thread drift: interesting avatar Ghost... bravo clap .

Topic: As you mentioned the prints are very good for both films but there are no extras. I was just glad to get King Kong Vs Godzilla(the '63 Americanized release) in letterbox, along with KKE. I bought this 2-pack DVD set at Tower Records for under $20.00 so I think it was a good deal. If we fans continue to see re-releases of these classic Toho(and other) kaiju and sci-fi films letterboxed and in clean prints(but with no extras) then as a fan and collector of these movies I am not going to complain. thumbs up

Ichizo Kobayashi. Does this name sound familiar? It didn't to me...until I started doing some reading about the largest film studio in Japan. That would be the "Toho Motion Picture Company", which owns the rights to Godzilla, Godzilla films and a galaxy of other sci-fi/fantasy/kaiju films that are the subject of discussion here and at other message boards. Ichizo Kobayashi, a railroad magnate and businessman, founded Toho in 1936.

I've always been interested in the history of this particular film studio and I plan to read more about Toho in the coming months. I also believe a topic thread for the discussion of Toho would be appropriate at Monsterland Forums, since we talk about so many of the movies that have been produced by this studio.

This thread is for the discussion of Toho, the company, any actors, directors, producers and other past and present technicians, suit actors and others employed by this studio, as well as other updates, current and/or archival, including links, images and videos.

This article(from 2000), and authored by Norman England, is an excellent capsule of info for those wanting to know more about the Toho Motion Picture Company, but not sure where to start looking online for info: http://www.mania.com/history-toho-godzilla_article_23688.html

Stuart Galbraith IV has authored a comprehensive book about this film studio, called The Toho Studios Story: http://www.goldengatebookstore.com/rel/v2_viewupc.php?storenr=333&upc=081086004X&affnr=-2630

Here's a Toho Studios filmography at IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0129423/

Toho's official site(in Japanese language of course): http://www.toho.co.jp/

Here's a link with images of a younger, and older Ichizo Kobayashi: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B0%8F%E6%9E%97%E4%B8%80%E4%B8%89

Well, Toho does make some solid entertainment. And I am not surprised it is not one of the better known film studios internationaly, since they own two rather large proterties - Akira Kurosawa's best films and Godzilla, including distrubting some Ultraman and Gamera films. Anyway, here is a brief list of non-kaiju Toho films I have seen off the top of my head...

1. Ikiru
2. Seven Samurai
3. High and Low
4. Returner
5. Onmyoji
6. Onlyoji 2
7. Ran - fave of Kurosawa's films
8. One Missed Call
9. Yojimbo
10. Onibaba
11. Kagemusha

Toho has sued Comcast because the huge cable-media company has used a likeness of Godzilla in one of their commercials.

Source: http://robojapan.blogspot.com/2009/08/toho-tells-comcast-didnt-you-learn-from.html

It will be interesting to see if Comcast opts to use the same attorneys Subway used after the sandwich retailer was sued for also using the monster's likeness in an advertisement.

Sci-Fi Japan has posted an interview of Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski, conducted by Richard Pusateri. Much of the interview is about the audio commentaries provided by Steve and Ed G. for the "Icons Of Sci-Fi Toho" DVD set.
