Seems like only yesterday when we were getting early glimpses of the first TRANSFORMERS movie. Now, here we go again with our countdown to TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN.

Check out USA TODAY for some cool pics of the upcoming movie.

It looks like almost the entire human cast is back (Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, John Torturro, Josh Duhamel). And of course the Autobots (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, etc) and Decepticons (Starscream, Megatron) will be returning. However, this time around we'll finally be seeing fan favorites like Devastator and Soundwave!

Transformers 4 finally gets its title. Transformers: Age of Extinction.

I know Michael Bay gets a bad rap for these movies, but I've been a Transformers fan since Day 1 thirty years ago, and I'm looking forward to this one.
My interest is piqued somewhat now...I'll be watching for future developments....

Looks like I'll be going to see this movie in theaters, despite how much I HATED the second and third films. It's a good thing I can get in free this time...

I'm clinging to a ray of hope that this movie completely blows me away. The fact that they completely dropped the previous cast of characters from the past three films can ONLY be a good thing. Now it looks like we have a legitimate human protagonist with Mark Wahlberg, and not Sam Witwicky screaming like a 4 year old girl. Hopefully the toilet humor from the previous films is also dialed back to a bearable level.

That is seriously all I'm asking for at this point...

-----EDIT-----

Holy crap! That was SO much better than the last three movies! shokked

I'm being serious here. Okay, so it could still be WAY better, but... wow! This is a huge step up. It's actually an entertaining popcorn flick that doesn't feel like it's rubbing its balls in my face.

So my hopes that switching protagonists would elevate the film turned out to be exactly the case: no longer do we have to put up with any characters that are constantly wailing like a frightened chimpanzee, and even the screaming from the helpless daughter is kept to a surprising minimum.

Likewise, the humor in this film isn't NEARLY as vulgar as it has been in previous entries. No longer are we having to grind our teeth through robot scrotums, teenage girls just happening to land in a way that their faces crush a man's joy department, and thank GOD, no Deep Wang. There's not even a pissing joke, guys! How cool is that?

The only thing I can gripe about regarding the humor is that towards the beginning of the film, there's a character who's only personality trait is that he's so high that his slow, addled brain compels him to state the obvious in that stereotypical stoner talk. And he does this at EVERY SINGLE TURN. I new as soon as we see this guy pull up in his car that he was going to be the most annoying part of the film, and I was worried he'd be another one of those annoying characters that stayed with the group and survived the entire film. I kept praying that this guy would get killed as soon as the action started, dying from literally being too dumb to live. Die! Die! DIIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then he died. eek!

He gets killed off at the end of the first act (wow, the fact that I can pinpoint where the film segways through a three act structure is a MIRACLE, given how long it is). And he dies HORRIBLY. His skin gets melted off of his skeleton. We SEE this. We SEE his charred skeleton, complete with fried skin and muscle tissue hanging from the blackened bones. For thirty seconds.

Good, Michael, good! You're learning! It's so refreshing to see one of Bay's trademark annoying caricatures die early on for a change. partytime

That annoying little fiber-optic blue-haired guy from the last movie shows up again, but his time in this film is mercifully short, sticking around just long enough to explain what's going on before buggering off into a field of flowers. Huh....

Pretty much all the human characters aside from the aforementioned stoner are enjoyable, and even the corporate ******bag who's trying to build transformers for the government has a more sympathetic side to him. He's a vain, self-obsessed, egotistical a-hole scientist, but he's also shown to be a man with a conscience and an altruistic motivation - he seems to genuinely want to protect and improve the world and expresses reluctance to have his creations fight the autobots out in the streets. The minute he realizes how in-over-his-head he is, he's fully on board with the heroes' plan to save the world, which involves disposing of the assets on which he'd gambled his entire company.

I'm saving the best for last here: the autobots in this film are genuinely cool, and I'm not just talking about Optimus and Bumblebee. In previous movies, Optimus was really the only autobot that got a chance to shine, with Bumblebee only getting one little hero moment and the rest of the autobots fading into the background. The only exception was Ironhide's big scene in Dark of the Moon, where he got one cool moment for the SOLE PURPOSE of trying to give his death scene, which came immediately after, more dramatic weight.

Here, we've got a smaller cast of autobots. Aside from Prime and Bee, we've got three very distinct characters, each with a personality of their own, given their own fair share of dialog. They are shown fighting together as comrades, standing united to defy the odds. It's a HUGE contrast to the background bots of the previous films. Due to their vibrant and diverse colors and shapes, we can always tell which one we're looking at when the action is at its peak.

Optimus has a bit of an emotional arc, too. The film opens with him enraged and embittered towards humanity, and it's only through a debt of gratitude that he agrees to help our human protagonists. His faith in humanity wavers between rekindled and extinguished throughout the film, particularly when he sees what's become of his old autobot comrades.

The villains of the film are suitably intimidating - Lockdown, the major antagonist, is some kind of cybertonian bounty hunter, complete with a memorable weapon loadout, minions and hunting hounds of his own on board his massive spaceship. It's not exactly clear just WHO he his, but it seems that his mysterious employers will be built up and revealed throughout the upcoming films.

So how could the film have been improved? Well, I'd have recommended cutting out quite a bit of the first act of the film. And while the action is framed in a way that doesn't feel nauseating or overwhelming, the film's climax still goes on far longer than it should. While the film's human characters are much more enjoyable here than they were in films past, they're still Michael Bay's patented over-the-top caricatures of archetypes and do have a few grating moments. A more straight-faced, somewhat more subtle approach to the characters might have benefited the film as a whole.

I may honestly pick this up when it hits shelves. Fans of the previous two movies say they enjoy the Transformers film franchise for being dumb fun, but it's only with this film and the first that I would agree with them. The shear lack of offending articles, combined with the additional screentime and personality given to the transformer characters, FINALLY elevates this film to the level of a decent popcorn action flick.
