Between the current TV series Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes, Young Justice, Green Lantern, and the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man, we need to discuss some of the best Marvel/DC animated TV series, past or present.

Cool topic! I just started watching some of this stuff and it's good to have a place to talk about it.

There's quite a few Spider-Man series available on Netflix; I've watched a few episodes of the newest series, but I haven't checked out the older ones yet. I've just discovered Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and i enjoy it a lot.

Another I've been watching is Iron Man: Armored Adventures. It depicts Tony, Rhodey and Pepper as teen-agers, with a few add-ons here and there. It re-tells the origin of Iron Man, with Tony and his Dad experiencing a plane crash, which kills Howard and leaves Tony having to get the implant in his chest.

There are a few "twists" to the story, though. I'm not familiar with the comics (yet), so forgive me if some of these observations are odd. For example: Tony has to regularly recharge the reactor in his chest (which is never referred to as the "arc" reactor). Also, Pepper's name is not Virginia, it's Patricia, and she's a rather eccentric character who talks a lot, and gets on everybody's nerves. Happy Hogan is a jock, who always wears a basketball uniform and doesn't really care about school. Rhodey is essentially the same character as in the movies; he always wants to help, but also wants to do the right thing.

It's a weird take on the Iron Man universe I know (the movies), but it is fun nonetheless. The villains are cool, the action is fun, and there's a good bit of screen time for Iron Man. It may not be something I would to die-hard fans, but for casual fans, I think it's worth a look. I will say, the animation is kind of weird. Not really bad, but different. It doesn't hinder my enjoyment of it at all though.

Well, I'm about four episodes into the Avengers cartoon, and it is awesome. So far, the episodes are basically just introducing the characters; not really a lot going on, but I expect it to pick up once all the characters are set into place. I definitely recommend this to anybody who likes this stuff; it's a fun watch.

As Far as the animated Green Lantern movies, I have a few thoughts on those, especially Green Lantern: First Flight.

I'd like to make a few observations in support of this movie.

One complaint is that it takes liberties with the story of Green Lantern from the comic books.

I addressed a similar subject in my Editorial MY THOUGHTS ABOUT ANIMATED MOVIES here:

http://s7.zetaboards.com/Animation_Maniacs/topic/8648353/1/#new

First of all: Nobody can name me a single animated movie that has ever been 100% true to the comic book, upon which it was based.

The movie is meant to entertain, above all. There was enough truth in it to make the story acceptable to those who are even somewhat familiar with the comic book.

It explored much more into the characters-the disagreements between the Guardians, & the resentment of Sinestro.

It showed Hal Jordan in a much more carefree attitude towards life, & yet, he still was very much aware of the great gift that had been given to him as being chosen as a Green Lantern. When the central battery is destroyed, we see him checking on the other corps members, as they had fallen out of the sky when their rings failed.

Then there are what some claim be be "adult" elements in the movie.

1. Sinestro saying that he wanted to see if Jordan had the "stones", (which older viewers would recognize as "balls", ie, courage & willingness), to follow him.

2. We see how Boodika is killed, by being impaled on an overhanging device in the morgue.

3. There is what someone would say is somewhat
"strong" language, as in when Hal smashes his fist against the surface that covers the Green Element, & almost swears.

But let's look at these arguments in the context of the world today.

This is the age of information. Even the youngest viewers of this movie would very likely be aware of some of the "language" issues, & even with the way that Boodika was killed. I feel would have very little impact. With all the violence in video games today, I am sure that these kids have seen much worse than that. I would think that younger viewers would probably think that what happened to Boodika was "cool". But actually be "affected", I can't see this happening.

What I though was so great about this movie, was the exciting storyline, the ruthlessness of Sinestro, the compassion that Hal Jordan showed, and particularly the great voice casting.

With people like Victor Garber, (who played the part of Christ in the Broadway & movie versions of GODSPELL), as Sinestro, John Larroquette, (from NIGHT COURT), as Tomar-Re, William Schallert, (from the Patty Duke Show), as the Guardian Appa Ali Apsa, Malachi Throne, (Falseface from the Adam West BATMAN series) as the voice of the Guardian Ranakar, Olivia D'Abo, (the Black Widow from the ULTIMATE AVENGERS MOVIES), as the voice of Carol Ferris, & the great Rob Paulsen, as the voice of the Weaponeers.

No-I don't accept the criticism of this movie. I feel that it is unwarranted & unjustified.

All the elements came together in a very compelling & exciting storyline, & this is how Green Lantern:First Flight should be viewed.

Here are some written interviews with some of the cast:

Victor Garber (Sinestro)

While we are talking about the Avengers, i feel that we must give credit to the excellent animation in Both The Ultimate Avengers, & The Ultimate Avengers 2:The Rise of the Black Panther.

On Ultimate Avengers:

An Excellent combining of the past & Present, with Cap leading a dysfunctional group of superheros, as well as trying to deal with living in a different time.

On Ultimate Avengers 2: The Rise of the Black Panther:

A very good look at the mysterious country of Wakanda, & the conflicts between T'Challa, & the elders. T'Challa does indeed prove himself in this movie! An excellent sequel!

My all time favorite Spidey series Pack. This series is a classic and no other Spidey animated series has been able to touch it still. I also enjoyed Spiderman and his Amazing Friends on Saturday mornings. You can even still catch that series on Disney XD.

Did you watch the 20+ micro episodes before the start of the full episodes of the series? It really sets things up before the actual series begins.

I don't know, Russ. I'm watching it on Netflix, and the descriptions don't say anything about them being "micro episodes." There are twenty-six of them, and they are between 23-25 minutes long.

Whatever they are, it doesn't change the fact that the show kicks ass; to me, anyway. Mr. Green

Oh yeah, it really does no doubt. Disney XD aired 20 six to ten minute episodes that kinda introduced each Avengers character. You can watch all the micro episodes on YouTube. They're pretty good.

Just discovered this. Sorry!

I know that it got "ragged", but I really liked it, for several reasons.

For those of us familiar with Green Lantern, there have been many depictions of Hal being a cocky, self assured pilot, sometimes a joker.

While some of those may have been evident in the movie, Hal was portrayed as being very human, freely admitting his human weaknesses & faults, & I really liked that!

The voices of Geoffrey Rush, as Tomar-Re & Michael Clark-Duncan as Kilowog, were perfect .

Casting was great, with Blake Livley, as Carol Ferris, & how she felt about Hal, despite his "screw-ups".

The Guardians too, were portrayed very well, as being aloof & separate from the corp that they created!

I really enjoyed it!

Elisabeth Moss, (of the series Mad Men), talks about her new role of voicing the newest member of the Green Lantern Corp-Arisia, in the DC Video-Green Lantern:Emerald Knights.

(As Background: In the comics, Arisia had a real hard "crush" on Hal Jordan)

This is NOT audio, but still quite informative.

I haven't seen this one yet, but you are one of many I've heard that didn't like it.

The most common complaint I've heard is sub-par animation. That usually isn't a deal-breaker for me, but if it's bad enough it does hurt the enjoyment factor.

Another I saw often was that there was virtually no continuity between the episodes. Granted, that's not always going to happen (if it does, that usually makes it a movie... very funny ), but it is nice to see some stuff carried over.

Anyway, it's available on Netflix, and I'm going to check it out eventually. If you get a chance, check out Iron Man: Armored Adventures; in an earlier post I gave a small description of it. I enjoy it; not as much as the Spider-Man or Avengers cartoons, but still enjoyable nonetheless.

I agree Pack. Following the success of FOX's animated X-Men series, the other Marvel animated series of the 90s other than FOX's Spider Man series were not that good. And this includes the above mentioned Iron Man, Hulk, Silver Surfer, and I think also Fantastic Four series. Even Spider Man Unlimited was not that good. Thank goodness that we had the DC animated series at the time like Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, and then even Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. (which was awesome btw)

I liked it. Not as much as Spider Man '67, but I thought it was still one of the better Marvel animated series. And speaking of the Fantastic Four, they'll be on the season premiere of Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes on Disney XD tomorrow afternoon. (along with the series premiere of Ultimate Spider Man)
