Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

The "Planet of the Apes" Thread; Discussion of the original classic film series, '01 remake, and the new series

I thought this franchise was deserving of its own thread.

Besides the Burton remake and the newest movie, I had not seen any of these before a few months ago. I saw the TV series once when I was a kid, but it was a long time ago and I still have yet to experience it. I was utterly mesmerized by these movies. Besides being movies about talking apes, the story behind them is very interesting.

Discuss this great film series here.

I didn't like the Burton directed '01 POA film that much...though the special makeup effects were marvelous. thumbz up

I am a big fan of the classic POA films(1968-1973). My two favorites are the first two, Planet Of The Apes(1968) and Beneath The Planet Of The Apes(1970). Charlton Heston, who did not want to appear in a second POA film, had to be talked into appearing in the '70 film and only then when he was promised he would appear only near the end of the movie.

I remember my foster father taking me to see the first two POA films at the old Rialto Theater in downtown Atlanta(GA). thumbz up

I own Planet Of The Apes-The Evolution DVD Box set, a '01 DVD box set released by Fox Home Video which includes all five POA films and a sixth DVD called "Behind The Planet Of The Apes" which delves into the production of these movies. Here's this set for sale at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Apes-Evolution-Charlton-Heston/dp/B00004TS0K/ref=sr_1_fed1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1355864053&sr=1-1&keywords=planet+of+the+apes+boxed+set

I bought this set back in '02 at a Best Buy for about $75.

I didn't know about this either. crazy2

I recommend getting the box set that is on Amazon. I have those DVDs and they look great! thumbz up (well considering how old they are...)
If you have Netflix they have the original movie in the "Classics" section and the quality of streaming is decent (lower than DVD, but acceptable).

@ Packmule: Have you seen the TV series (non-animated)? It is really good. I have had it for a while am only half way through it.

No. I remember seeing it advertised on CBS as a kid. I believe the POA series aired on CBS in 1974.

It's okay that you guys missed it; heck, I even forgot about it until now. Just trying to give everybody something new to talk about. :)

I have the Fox set as well. I haven't watched the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" documentary yet, but the rest of them look pretty good; though I really can't comment on the quality much, because these are the first copies I have ever seen of these movies. For what they are they look good, but in comparison to others I wouldn't know.

If I'm not mistaken, the TV series complete set is also available for purchase at Amazon. I remember liking the few flashes I'd seen when I was a kid, but I don't remember much more than that; I'd really like to see both that and the animated series.

shokked

It is very good. It is more like PoA 4 rather than the first reboot focused on the first movie.

Amazon has it for $15

You should really see it. There are several plot holes (I guess is how you'd describe it), but I really enjoyed it. The special effects are astounding to say the least. It's probably one of top three favorite PotA movies.

That was amusing.

I'm ready for some news on the upcoming movie; some good news this times. We already lost Rupert Wyatt as a director, so I don't want to hear any more bad news.

I'm going bananas here.

Ken Hulsey of "Monster Island News" has posted a marvelous blog about trivia pertaining to the 1968 film Planet Of The Apes, including some interesting set photos: http://robojapan.blogspot.com/2013/01/planet-of-apes-behind-scenes-photos-and.html

Linda Harrison sure was a hottie in the first two POA movies. tongue-1

Cool! I may look to add this to my Apes collection!

Topic: http://www.dawnofapes.com/

What might you think of this, before it comes out? Will it be good? ill it suck?

My personal opinion is that it will be better or equal to "Rise". I will probably miss it in theaters and I will buy it when it gets released.

I never got around to seeing quite a few movies that I planned on. Godzilla (2014) is one of them along with a few more. I have a feeling Ill be spending quite a bit of money in the next few months.

I think I will get this film (and Godzilla) the days they come out.

Topic: There is already talks about making a third movie in this "new" rebooted series. Any thoughts?
I personally would love to see a new "original" concept to be dded to this franchise.

Side Note: I still thank the Mark Walberg film wasn't too bad.

That as long as Michael Bay doesn't direct it I'm all for it. I'd like to see a straight remake of the '68 POA film.

I watched Planet Of The Apes(1968) and Beneath The Planet Of The Apes(1970) last week after recording both(in HD) off TCM.

I like the first two POA films best, no doubt about it. In fact, I actually saw the '70 film at the Rialto Theater in downtown Atlanta(GA) when I was a kid. The Rialto Theater, at that time(60's and 70's) showed a lot of horror, sci-fi and action "grindhouse" films. Among other movies I saw as a kid at the Rialto Theater: Destroy All Monsters(1968), Krakatoa East Of Java(1969), The Green Slime(1968), The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad(1974), Murphy's War(1971), Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory(1971), Zulu Dawn(1979) & Captain Nemo And The Underwater City(1970).

I consider the '68 POA film to be one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. winky thumbz up
