Palace Background

Constructed in the 17th Century by Duke Henry Fellows for his wife Queen Laura as a 50th birthday present the original palace consisted of large gardens, a central palace , east and west pavilions. The palace stood in a 200-hectare (490-acre) park which had its own canal for boating on. The palace took nine years to build and Queen Laura moved in on her 59th birthday in 1675. Since then the Palace has been extended many times and today includes a East and West wing, which is connected by an outer wall which has several houses built into it, this creates a semi circular walled area behind the Palace seperating it from the more recently built high class housing area known as the Green Estate because of the large number of trees there.

Several lodges and summerhouses have been built in the Palace grounds and these have been used as residencies for many of the minor royals or visiting dignitaries, as have the houses built into the wall.
