Full Name: Samuel Zachary Guthrie
Code Name: Cannonball
Age: 28
Gender: Male, straight.
Physical Description: Samuel Guthrie is a typical blonde haired, blue eyed Southern boy, born in the back-hills of Kentucky. He stands at 6'2" tall and weighs in at 182 pounds. His body is muscled from years of hard work and conditioning, and he has a farmer's tan most of the time. Over his left eye, Sam constantly wears a black eye patch to hide the disfigurement beneath. His body is coated in multiple scars from his past work life, and his hands have a rough calloused feel to them.

It is most common to see Sam dressed casually, most often in bluejeans, a white shirt, cowboy hat and a worn out leather jacket. He has been known to alter his look from time to time. Case in point, there was a distinct period where he could not be seen flying without an old leather flight helmet and goggles affixed to his head. While working as sheriff, Sam would wear a beige uniform shirt, jeans and a holstered six shooter loosely hung on his hip. Since leaving the force, he still wears the holster, though now missing the gun, as a reminder of how things change and his responsibilities to others.
Playby: random model guy du jour

Personality Overview: Sam is honest, loyal and puts others before himself. He's fun-loving but given to self-doubt, a little insecure about his education. He lacks much of an education but has a natural wisdom and interest in philosophy. Both a hero and very much human, he's the sort of person you could relate to and hang with. Sam is devoted to his friends and family and would do ANYTHING to protect them.

Sam follows his own personal sense of rules and will seldomly stray far from them. His rules may not match with the rules of the world all the time, but he knows what he believes to be right and wrong, and that is enough for him. Try to force him in another direction and he will not budge easily.
Likes: Rules and order. Safety. Farming. Family. Quiet time. Flying.
Dislikes: Bigots. Criminals. People who won't hold a door open for a lady.
Fears: Seeing those he loves die.
Goals: To keep everyone he cares for safe.

Powers: Rocket Flight: Cannonball possesses the ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it from his skin. This energy, released by an act of will, is accompanied by smoke, flame and condensation, much like the exhaust of a rocket engine. The equal and opposite reaction to this thrust causes his body to be propelled through the air like a human rocket. While there was a time when Sam could only fly in straight lines or arcs he now has much more control over his flight and can make midair turns and is capable of landing without leaving a gigantic crater in his wake, by controlling the thrust and direction of his blast field.

As a side effect of forming the thermo-chemical energies over the surface of his body, Cannonball becomes virtually invulnerable. Accompanying the release of energy is a half-inch thick energy field which channels the explosion and protects his skin from the direct effects of the blast. It also negates momentum and related energy effects, thereby cushioning his entire body from any impact up to a half-minute from the depletion of his energy. Not only is he protected from rough landings, but he is also protected from nearly all types of injury while in flight. The protective field also protects any person or object with which he is in physical contact.

Sam can only carry a finite amount of weight while he flies, on average the equivalent of two full sized adults, any more than that and he can not get sufficient thrust to lift off, and even if he does, his blast shield will not be able to protect such a large mass.

Weaknesses: Sam is weak to psionic attacks and intrusions while flying and while not powered. While not powered he is susceptible to any injury that would harm the average person. His blast field when activated renders him nearly invincible to most means of physical and elemental attack though.
Skills: Mining, farming, horseback riding. Sky diving. Law enforcement.

Birthday: February 9th
Family: Lucinda Guthrie (mother), Thomas 'Ty' Zebulon 'Zeke' Guthrie (father-deceased), Lucas Bartholomew Guthrie (paternal uncle), Paige Guthrie, Joshua Guthrie, Joelle Guthrie, Elizabeth Guthrie, Melody Guthrie, Jebediah Guthrie, Lynnette Guthrie, Lewis Guthrie, Cissie Guthrie
Legal Status: Law abiding American citizen.
History: Sam was born and raised in Cumberland County Kentucky like generations of Guthries before him. They were all born upon the mountains, and the mountains were where they always stayed. Live by the mountain, die by the mountain, eternal rest on the mountain. That was exactly how Sam planned his life to go, and he would have been happy with that, had fate not intervened.

Sadly for the entire Guthrie clan (and by then it had grown considerably) their father died much too young in an oil field accident, and the family began to suffer. So, at sixteen years of age, Sam dropped out of high school and looked at his options. He could follow in his father's footsteps and go work the oil fields, or he could partake in the other industry on the mountain that would gladly except any employee, regardless of age, coal mining. He could not bring himself to go work in the same place where his father had died, so it really left only one option. As dangerous as it was, Sam's family was in dire straits and needed the money. Without being asked, Sam took the job in the mines and headed off to work.

The work was hard, and the days were long, but Sam thrived in the role as provider for the many mouths of his family. He would come home dusty and dirty and he would sleep only scant hours a night before he would return to work. Life continued on this way for some time.

Then, the inevitable when working in an underfunded mine in the deep country happened. One day while working, a cave-in trapped him and the rest of the crew he was with. Sam's latent superhuman abilities manifested themselves in this situation. Sam fruitlessly slammed against the walls of stone and coal with his pickaxe to no avail. In frustration, he slammed his head against the stone and was surprised as a surge of power haloed around his head and shattered the stone.

Unsure of what to do, but desperate to get himself and the others free, Samuel Guthrie again slammed into the stones and this time launched upward as a fluctuating field of energy appeared around him and propelled him forward. Rocks and debris bit into his flesh where the shield would fail, one unlucky coal chunk slamming into his face and wreaking havoc to his left eye.

Sam was considered an outsider, even his family were slightly afraid. He could no longer work in the mine and eventually was forced to leave home. So Sam did just that, and he traveled the country looking for odd jobs, which included working more mines, construction work, and even a few jobs in the one industry he dreaded, oil fields.

It was a rough transition to begin with. Of all the Guthrie children, Sam had always found himself the least set on ever leaving the mountain, and there he was away from the family he had promised to care for without even a full high school education under his belt. There was little that Sam could do but accept things though. One thing he could do to keep connected to his family was send home as much money as he was able, and that was one thing Sam has always made sure to continue doing. He was the man of the house, even while away.

He had a power that he needed to learn to control on his own, and landings that... were less than controllable. So with the money he did not send home, or spend on food and lodging, Sam took up an interesting hobby. He began to skydive. He would jump from a plane, parachute strapped to his back and try to activate his powers. If they turned on, he would slam into the ground and leave behind a large impact crater. If they did not turn on, he always had a parachute to rely on for a safe landing.

And of course when the dust settled, figuratively and literally, Sam’s family, and much of the townsfolk welcomed him back. So eventually, Sam headed back home to Cumberland County, Kentucky where he tried to settle back into the life he had left behind. With the town no longer set against Sam and his kin, he looked to settle in and make his childhood home, his home once again. So Sam Guthrie, at the age of twenty two, became the self-appointed county sheriff, a job no one else wanted as the backwoods sheriffing was not an enjoyable affair. He spent many a year enforcing law and order in the mountains, a task he was fully up to thanks to doing the same thing at home for much of his young life.

Year after year he would be re-elected into the position of Cumberland county sheriff. At first it was simply because no one else wanted the job. In time it became because he had earned the respect and admiration of the local mountain folks.

This all continued until Sam was 28 and things started to change. He had heard rumblings of new political movements coming from the Kentucky state capital but he wrote them off as just rumors unimportant to him. Then when a farming bill passed that specifically stated no farm aide would be handed to farms using any migrant workers with 'abilities', his interest was peeked. Sam kept an eye on local politics, offering bits of his opinion when he felt warranted. The comments of a small time county sheriff went unnoticed of course. Then it all happened. He heard of a bill limiting who could work in public office or municipal fields based on things such as their 'heightened abilities'.

Sam climbed into the rust bucket of a truck they called a police vehicle in Cumberland County and he drove all night to the statehouse. As the bill was being debated on the floor he marched himself in, using his badge and threat of 'hillbilly violence' to make it past security. He stepped up onto the podium unannounced and he laid down the law the way he saw it. He had spent years working for the community, and he and his family were mountain fixtures. But the powers that be felt they could limit who could do what. He wouldn't have any of it. In what he hoped was a moving speech Sam announced all that, and at the end, laid his badge and gun on the podium and walked off, announcing he wouldn't return until they could get their collective heads out of their asses.

A grown man without a job, Sam no longer has small children to fend for, or a farm to run. What he has now is a chance to help mold the future.
