Nightcrawler![]() Full Name: Kurt Wagner Code Name: Nightcrawler Age: 24 Gender: Male, Asexual. Physical Description: Nightcrawler is a mutant whose physical mutations clearly mark him as inhuman. He's often mistaken as a demon by those whom are superstitious, and for good reason. The five foot nine, hundred and sixty five pound young man seems shorter because he almost never stands up straight. His natural posture is to lean forward, balancing out the three and a half foot long, prehensile, barbed tail that sways from side to side behind him. Most of his slender, lean body is covered with a very fine, soft blue fur that conceals his skin thus many markers to determine his true age, making him appear younger than he truly is. A shaggy mop of darker, indigo hair rests atop his head, bangs often falling forward over one eye or the other. Speaking of eyes, Kurt's are a bright, vivid yellow that glow softly in the darkness. His face is almost tapered in shape, the wide at the brow, then gradually narrowing to a slim jawline, with an aristocratic nose, pointed elven ears, and a mouthful of bright white teeth that are often on displace when he smiles, including a pair of pronounced, fang like canines. Nightcrawler has only 3 fingers (including an opposable thumb) on each hand, and only 2 toes, each longer than an ordinary human's, on each foot. He is inhumanly flexible, and commonly can be found resting comfortable twisted into improbable poses, much like a dog or cat. Kurt has never really been in charge of a wardrobe, instead relying on hand me downs and cast offs from the circus. His sense of style is practically non existent. He favors darker clothing, just because it works better with his complexion. Given his druthers, he'd wear an acrobat's leotard and little else, because the tight fitting garment moves well with his body and only requires a minor modification for his tail. He knows that's inappropriate, so wears baggy, concealing clothing over his inhuman form. Hoodies, long coats, clunky, oversized boots, whatever he can scrounge. Playby: Kodi Smit-McPhee Personality Overview: Kurt is a thoughtful young man, prone to introspection. He masks his own discomfort over his inhuman appearance and depression by entertaining others with a sharp wit and a willingness to be silly. Perhaps because of his own body issues, he tends to be rather empathic, looking past outward appearances and trying to get at the heart of the person underneath. Kurt would disagree at the notion that he has body dysmorphic disorder, even if a psychiatrist might diagnosis him with it. His poor body image has been reaffirmed over and over again over the years. It is a scientifically tested fact that his appearance is monstrous and just something he has to come to grips with. He's a terrific listener and not terribly judgmental despite his own solid moral code and strong Catholic beliefs. Not that he's that good of a Catholic. Because of his appearance and constant travelling, he rarely attends service, typically sneaking in and hiding in dark corners when he has the opportunity. He's even more rarely attended confession, although will confess his sins in prayer and assign himself penance. He finds a great deal of comfort in the rites and rituals of Catholicism, but like most professed Catholics, doesn't consider the church infallible. He recognizes that it's a hidebound, mortal institution created by men to control the faithful. Religion is a tool that can be used to uplift or can be used to bludgeon. The church does a great deal of wonderful, charitable works around the globe, and also can oppress those who are different, and that's not something Kurt approves of. Kurt operates from a base assumption that God is perfect love, and that man is imperfect, incapable of truly understanding or grasping that perfect love. We are all God's children, even those as misshapen as he is. We can choose to be good or bad children. Kurt tries his best to be good. Likes: Darkness, Kindness, Prayer, Acrobatics, Derring Do, Pirate Movies, Swordfighting, Popcorn Dislikes: Cruelty, Mirrors, Bright Lights, Alcohol, Telephones Fears: Being Caged, The Look of Fear Most People Get When Seeing Him for the First Time, That He Might Actually Be A Demon Instead of a Mutant Goals: Universal Acceptance of Mutants, Salvation, Accepting Himself. Powers: TELEPORTATION: Nightcrawler is a mutant with the ability to teleport himself, the clothes he is wearing, and, within limits, a certain amount of additional mass which is in contact with him. That amount of additional mass finds its limit in his lifting abilities. He can apparently only carry items or persons he would be able to pick up and hold aloft for at least a couple of seconds. The longer the distance over which Nightcrawler teleports himself, the harder and more exhausting it is for him to make the teleportational "jump." It is easier for him to teleport between north and south (along Earth's magnetic lines of force) than it is for him to teleport between east and west (against the magnetic lines). Under optimal conditions, teleporting only himself and his costume, Nightcrawler can displace himself a distance of about 2 miles east-to-west, and up to 3 miles north-to-south. Making a vertical teleportation upwards is difficult and dangerous. Nightcrawler has made a vertical teleportational "jump" of 2 miles by pushing himself to his physical limits. The exact limits to the amount of weight that Nightcrawler can carry with himself while teleporting, and the limits to the range of distance over which he can teleport himself with such additional loads, are as of yet unknown and untested. NOTE: When he transports a passenger over even moderate distances, the one transported will feel nauseous, weakened and ill, to the point of exhaustion. The exact impact of that disorientation varies from person to person and can become easier to deal with given practice and repeat exposure over time. A given individual's tolerance for motion sickness, nausea and the like impact how long the disorientation lasts, as does the length and number of the teleportations. It could be a short as a few seconds for a healthy person and a quick hop to as long as a few hours for a frail person leaping miles at a time, thus being exposed to more and more of that strange other dimension. Kurt himself will notice a strain when he uses his powers for transportation needs too often in a rapid succession. He teleports by displacing himself into another dimension (the nature of which is as yet unknown), travelling through it, and then returning to his own dimension at a certain distance from his point of departure. He consciously determines his point of return. The entire process occurs so quickly (seemingly instantaneously) that Nightcrawler is usually unaware of being in another dimension at all. Nightcrawler guides himself through the other dimension by an unconscious, natural direction-finding sense. Although Nightcrawler controls his teleportational ability with his conscious mind, his power to teleport is not psionic. Rather, it is the result of an unknown biochemical/biophysical reaction which he triggers mentally. When he disappears in teleporting, Nightcrawler leaves behind smoke with a stench reminiscent of burning brimstone and sulfur. This is a small portion of the atmosphere of this other dimension that escapes while the aperture is open. His teleportation is invariably accompanied by the muffled sound of imploding air rushing to fill the vacuum left where Nightcrawler's volume was (his signature "BAMF!" noise). Nightcrawler has a very limited unconscious extrasensory ability (infallible spatial awareness) that prevents him from teleporting himself so that his feet, for example, would materialize below the surface of the local ground. It helps him to always judge distances correctly – at least distances he knows off the top of his head (to places he knows very well) or distances he can see. Because this ability is so limited, however, Nightcrawler will not teleport into any place that he cannot see or has not seen in the past. If Nightcrawler teleported himself into an unfamiliar area, he would run the risk of materializing partially or entirely within a solid object. If too much of his body materialized within a solid object, he would probably be killed or at least badly crippled. Nightcrawler's powers automatically displace liquids and gases when he arrives in the course of a teleportation. Nightcrawler's momentum is retained throughout the process of teleportation: he arrives with whatever amount of inertia he left with. For example, if he were falling from a great height, he could not teleport himself towards the ground in order to save himself; he would land with the same velocity that he teleported with. He can subtract this inertia by teleporting short distances upwards (as though taking two steps back for every one forward). There seems to be no limit on multiple teleports, though it might turn out that at one time or another he would have exhausted himself by too many teleports in one row. By having learned to teleport multiple times in few seconds, he is now able to attack foes from unexpected directions with uncanny accuracy. CLING TO SOLID SURFACES: Kurt is able to unconsciously control the inter-atomic bondings between his molecules and those of other objects which enables him to cling to solid surfaces. Thus, he can stick to walls or any other solid surface provided to him. This will not work on fluids, so that he cannot use that power to prevent himself from drowning, for example. BLENDING INTO DARKNESS Kurt can blend into darkness and shadow, rendering him nigh invisible so long as his eyes are closed. That blending isn't just a matter of his darker coloration and fur, but the shadowy realm he teleports through envelops him, covers him while he's concealed in darkness, swallowing light that might reveal him, save his luminescent eyes. NIGHTVISION Kurt's bright yellow eyes are gently luminescent in the dark, and he can see even in absolute darkness, although the darker it is, the more muted colors become and shapes become less distinct. In absolute darkness, he can tell words are written on a page, but couldn't read them. PREHENSILE TAIL. Kurt's three and a half foot long tail is prehensile, can support his own weight, and is dexterous enough to be used as another hand. Despite the lack of thumb, he can curl it around objects and use the tail to juggle, swordfight, or the like. He could type with the tip of his tail, but it'd be even slower than trying to hunt and peck with his own large fingers. Skills: Nightcrawler is a superb athlete and an Olympic-class acrobat. He can do a standing high jump of about 8 feet. He's a skilled juggler, knife thrower, and sword swallower. He's a talented swordsman, but has much more stage fighting experience than battle experience. He has extensive knowledge of Catholism and is fluent in English, German, and Latin. Birthday: November 11th (He doesn't advertise or celebrate.) Family: Eric Wagner (father, deceased), Raven Darkholme (Mystique, mother - this is, at this stage, NOT known to Nightcrawler or anyone else, except maybe Mystique, but with her - who knows?) Legal Status: No criminal record History: Kurt's earliest memories were of his father, Eric Wagner, a deeply religious man who protected his deformed son from a world that wasn't ready to understand or accept him. The Wagners were an old money noble family who'd lost most of their wealth and status during the 20th century, but Eric still had enough money to home school his son. His goal was for Kurt to join a seminary and live a life of quiet contemplation in an isolated monastery somewhere away from prying eyes. Life had other plans for young Kurt. Eric was robbed and shot one day coming home from the market, leaving his 11 year old son alone. When the authorities came for him, their extreme reactions to his appearance horrified the boy, who fled in a puff of sulphuric smoke, leaving the police wondering just what they'd seen. That very evening, Kurt snuck into a circus, drawn by the bright lights, delicious smells, and sight of people who were just as odd as he was. The other performers immediately took to the strange mutant, whereas the Circus's owner, a man named Max Getmann did not care for the young mutant at all, but accepted that he'd be useful in the freak show. During his time in the circus, Kurt was never allowed to perform as anything more than a 'freak'. The demon boy of Getmann's circus has been a great draw. Kurt is a popular freak, with his eyes and tail in particular drawing startled gasps from the crowd. While not in his cage getting leered at by curious crowds, he spends his time learning all he can from his fellow performers. He's a better acrobat and trapeze artist than the Flying Hoffmanns, and actually saved the life of Fritz Hoffmann, the patriarch during a training mishap. Most of his life has been spent in this circus, touring Europe and being gawked at by crowds paying to see a monster. He knows he's being exploited, but knows of no where else to go. Perhaps one day he can find a place to live that doesn't involved being called a freak. He has faith that God has a plan, but that belief grows harder and harder to maintain with each passing year. Then came the Friends of Humanity. Kurt wasn't even certain what town they were in. He just awoke in the early hours of the morning to fire and screams of both fear and rage. Cries for help mixed with calls of 'Mutant Lovers!' His home, his friends were under attack and Kurt didn't even think about it, he just leapt into action. His first priority was to rescue everyone he could. One by one, his friends, his family, even the vicious circus owner himself were evacuated in puffs of sulphur, finding themselves sick and puking on nearby rooftops, out of the fire, out of the danger. The wounded were placed together with Mikel, the veterinarian, who also acted as the Circus' medic, along with a couple more able bodied souls to help. "He's the one, get him!" cried one of the masked attackers. They'd apparently come for him, the circus's signature mutant freak. Kurt was caught searching for medical supplies in Mikel's wagon. A group of 4 men, wearing masks came for him, brandishing long, baton like tasers. He had three choices. Run, fight, or try to grab the supplies, then run. Not a wrathful man, but a compassionate one, Kurt grabbed the supplies, and before he could teleport away, was promptly shocked and beaten unconscious by his unknown assailants. He woke up later, imprisoned by his attackers, powers somehow nullified by the collar they'd placed around his neck as if he were some sort of dog. He came to learn they were the Friends of Humanity and had taken him for experimentation. They wanted to find a cure for his condition. Kurt knew they were motivated by fear and hate, not compassion. Still, his best chance to find a way out of here was to not invoke any more wrath that was absolutely needed. He truthfully told him that he'd love a cure. That his 'condition', his appearance had caused him to be a freak, an outsider who people feared, and that he didn't want to be a Mutant, he just wanted to be a man. He helped comfort the other prisoners as best he could, as he were not alone. He counseled patience, cooperation, and vigilance. They'd need to find a way to escape, but rash actions would only make getting away harder. If they just had faith, their salvation would come. Hopefully not in death.
