Building a Better Mousetrap

Date: March 13
Time: Very Early Morning
Place: Factory, San Francisco

A red haired man in a white suit surveyed the factory floor from his spot above the equipment. Fiery waves bounced over his shoulders as he turned his head. The corners of his mouth crept up slowly until they were a broad smile, one that contained a devilish mirth.

"Yes, Mr. Chambers, this will do nicely. The whole room I think."

Beside him, a bald man with chocolate skin did a similar survey. He flicked his fingers back and forth as he counted. "That would take about three hours boss."

The redhead nodded slightly. "Then we have time. Please get started. Ms. Coriander says they have a strong need to come to the city soon. We want this done before they get here."

Mr. Chambers promptly turned and climbed down the latter to the factory floor and made straight for the nearest wall. He laid his hand against the metal and focused. An invisible force spread out over the surface, saturating the wall. He walked slowly along, dragging his hand across the surface as he moved. The force continued to spread up the wall and along the floor. As he moved, Mr. Chambers started humming. The tune was familiar, but unplaceable, like a song you had known as a kid but forgotten.

With Mr. Chambers working, the man in the white suit turned his attention elsewhere. He pressed a finger to the device in his ear. "Miss Locke. The building is suitable. Mr. Chambers is already acquiring the room, you are clear to bring in the equipment."

"Aye boss." Came her reply with Scottish accent. A short while latter, a stocky woman with her dirty blond hair pulled into a tight bun pushed a large cart of electronic equipment through the doors and got to work.

From his place above the machines, the man in the white suit watched his henchmen work. It took some effort to keep his composure. Finally his plan would be realized. It had been ears in the making, finding the associates with the right skills and abilities and getting enough money to start it, but it was so close that he could taste it. It has seemed too good to be true when he was approached nearly a month ago with a commission. It seemed that there was a group of mutants being gathered. Someone who knew darker markets of the world had contacted him about killing off some or all of these mutants and had found his description of Murderworld to be a fitting way to take them out. Arcade had been paid handsomely to ensnare the mutants in his deathtrap and with that money being put to use, his gruesome playground was nearly complete.

It had turned out that some of the mutant that had joined the targeted group had abilities that could interfere with Murderworld's working, but Ms. Coriander had been very thorough in her studying and was reasonably sure that they had accounted for them. If it came down to it, they would use White Rabbit or force to keep those individuals from entering the factory.

Speaking of White Rabbit, the woman was climbing up the ladder to join the man in the white suit. Rings of brown hair bounced as she climbed and sharp hazel eyes locked with the man's when her face popped up above the surface of the platform. She hopped up next to him and slipped her arm through his, laying her head on his shoulder.

"This is actually going to happen isn't it Arcade? We finally get play."

Arcade turned his green eyes back to those working on the ground. "Yes my dear Rabbit, I am very confident we will. I don't think there will be a need, but should the situation arise, will you be ready to lead people away from the rabbit hole?"

Her giggle was like ice cracking. "Of course. Only Alice will find her way in here."

For a very long time, the two of them stood silently and watched while Ms. Locked installed the tech and Mr. Chambers touched everything in the room. Eventually he patted her gently on the head.

"You had better go get some sleep my dear. If we do need you, you'll want to be ready."

Arcade rubbed his hands together in anticipation of the fun to come. Soon, soon we will play my unsuspecting mutants.
