"American Sniper's" reign as the no. 1 movie in the U.S. has come to an end thanks to a Nickelodeon movie that many thought was 10 years too late. "The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" is the sequel to "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" which earned $85 million back in 2004. For some reason it took over a decade for a sequel to happen and it appears to have been well worth the wait. The Paramount Pictures release took in $15 million on Friday and is projected to earn $45-50 million over the three-day. That is a substantially bigger the original's $32 million opening which occurred at a time when the property was at a pop culture high. With a reported budget of $74 million, however, this new "Spongebob" flick will need to outperform is predecessor substantially to break even. Debuting in second was the Wachowskis' latest effort, "Jupiter Ascending." The Sci-Fi flick took in $6.3 million for what could be an $16-18 million weekend. That's below pre-release polling that estimated a $25 million plus debut. Negative reviews likely contributed to the film's performance. Clint Eastwood's Oscar-nominated blockbuster continued its stellar run on at no. 3 with another $6.2 million and $264 million overall. The question isn't whether "Sniper" will hit $300 million, that's a given. It's whether the Bradley Cooper drama will surpass a jaw-dropping $350 million. Another critics' miss is Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures' "Seventh Son." This fantasy adventure was originally supposed to hit theaters in 2014 but was delayed after Legendary exited its distribution deal with Warner Bros. With just $2.3 million this potential franchise starter is pretty much dead on arrival. It will be lucky to hit $8 million by Sunday. "Project Almanac" rounded out the top five with another $1.4 million for $11.9 million in its first eight days. |

DreamWorks Animation's Home (2015) got off to a fantastic start on Friday, and is shaping up to be a nice win for the struggling animation studio. Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard was no slouch either. Ultimately, both movies are poised to open north of $35 million this weekend, which is a rare occurrence at the domestic box office. Home opened to an estimated $15.6 million, which is nearly twice as much as Mr. Peabody & Sherman's $8 million debut around this same time last year. It's also well above the first How to Train Your Dragon ($12.1 million), and last year's Rio 2 ($12 million). If it follows Mr. Peabody's pace, it will wind up with over $60 million this weekend. More modestly, the How to Train Your Dragon pace translates to around $55 million. Playing at 3,175 locations, Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard opened to a strong $12.9 million on Friday. While that's a bit lower than Hart's Ride Along ($14.4 million), it's in line with some of Ferrell's top movies like Blades of Glory ($12.4 million) and The Other Guys ($13.1 million). For the weekend, Get Hard is poised to bank at least $35 million. Coming off its opening weekend, The Divergent Series: Insurgent plummeted 68 percent to an estimated $6.85 million. In comparison, the first Divergent movie dropped 64 percent at the same point. So far, Insurgent has grossed $71.2 million (down seven percent from the first movie). Cinderella fell 50 percent to an estimated $4.7 million on Friday. Through 15 days, the Disney fantasy has earned $137.2 million total. Indie horror movie It Follows expanded to 1,218 locations and took fifth place with an estimated $1.41 million. For a movie relying almost entirely on word-of-mouth and critical praise, that's a pretty solid result. For the weekend, It Follows should wind up with over $4 million. |

"Furious 7" has arrived and it has conquered. The latest installment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise took in $67.3 million on Friday surpassing "The Hunger Games" for the 11th biggest single day in box office history. At this pace, the James Wan directed thriller should take between $145-150 million for the three-day frame and that would put it right outside the top 10 for all-time opening weekends. Comparatively, the previous highest grosser in the franchise was the last movie, "Fast & Furious 6" which earned $97 million on its way to a franchise record $238 million domestic and $788.6 million global tallies. Audiences have clearly flocked to theaters and to say goodbye to star Paul Walker in his last film (a fact Universal Pictures subtly avoided in its marketing except for the poster). "Fast 7" earned an A Cinemascore and critics have also given it a thumbs up. The movie matched the 67 grade "Fast Five" earned on Metacritic and its 81% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes is the best the series has earned so far. Box office watchers are no doubt wondering how high "Furious 7? will go. A $300 million domestic cume seems like a given, but is $400 million out of reach? It may all depend on how much the flick can make before "Avengers: Age of Ultron" arrives on May 3. Dropping to no. 2 was DreamWorks Animation's "Home" which finished off a strong week with another $11.3 million for $79.4 million in just eight days. The 20th Century Fox release is on its way to surpassing the $187 million gross "The Croods" ended up with in 2013. "Get Hard" came in at no. 3 with $5 million and $49 million in, also, eight days. With little comedy competition until May it has a shot at surpassing $90 million when all is said and done. "Cinderella" was fourth with $4.07 million and a magical $161 million to date. "Insurgent" rounded out the top five with another $4 million and $97.3 million so far. It should pass the $100 million mark sometime today. |
