Consider how effective is facebook advertising. (We would also be interested to know if you’ve had prior experiences of using Facebook advertising as well, both as an advertiser and a consumer!) |

Hi! I’m Jiaxin, a year 3 Communications and New Media major in NUS. On a personal level, I think FB uses search engine advertising as I do see advertisements related to shopping and travel accommodations appearing on my newsfeed; which is something that I had searched for quite frequently on the Internet. Perhaps because of my constant navigation on blogshops, I also experienced having blogshops and related sales appearing on my newsfeed. To list a few, Jobandshop, Twenty3, Reebonz Singapore, ZUJI Singapore are some pages that I have never searched on before which appeared on my feed. Though I don’t always click on them, if the advertisements have keywords or images that catch my eye, I would just click on them to view the ongoing sales or products. Occasionally, perhaps one out of the ten times I click on such advertisements, do I make purchases from them. However I think that my purchases are only made after comparing prices and if they are within my budget, then do I buy them. Hence, I do think that such advertisements appearing on my FB newsfeed do affect my purchasing decisions as they would either reaffirm my previously undecided buys when I see same or similar products appearing again and again on various blogshops (personally, I would be more inclined to buy as I would feel that a particular style is the trend now since it is everywhere). Furthermore, such advertisements might result in viewers purchasing more than what they initially intended to when they first click the website, as they see the wider range of products that are available as well. Hi, I'm a CNM major at NUS too! For sponsored posts and page promotion on Facebook, it really depends on how targeted your market segment is. The perks of using FB advertising is that you can really narrow down the demographics and selected psychographics of the people you are reaching (though that might mean slightly more expensive PPC). But my personal experience with PPC is that it does draw the right crowd that people I have worked for (at internships and on projects) need. So for example, I used to intern at a full service photography company. Their main target audience were late 20s-30s for couple and wedding photo shoots. On days the advertising was employed there was a steady stream of engagement on the page though the rate of conversion is about 1 engagement-to-$1. I've also used PPC for a photography event and because we were able to set the general interest of the target we are reaching, we drew quite a substantial amount of eyeballs for our event through that. At the end of the day I think it also boils down to the copy of your FB post and it's impact. If the original post shared is not engaging or adequate in drawing attention or worthy of the viewers time, it would not make much of a difference if you pay for a sponsored post. |

Hi there. I'm Nisya, a year 3 CNM major as well. I personally do not find Facebook advertising useful. In fact, I find it to be quite a nuisance. I guess it's because I specifically use Facebook as a means to keep abreast of my friend's online activity. Hence, those advertisements at the sidebars, on top and in between my timeline distracts me. Perhaps I'm the only one who feels this way but I really dislike how it is apparent that advertising can be so easily done, what with bundles and packages that you can choose from and the expected reach you can approximately get. That is so not slick and clean! Effective advertising should be subtle and sleek, I feel. Facebook has to up its game! |

Hey guys, when thinking about paid advertising on Facebook, I would encourage you to consider a couple of things: 1) Custom Audiences Go google this to find out more - do you think this has implications on personal data privacy? (though I will tell you that many marketers are legally accumulating data and personal information for use in CRM programs - with great results) 2) Facebook as a reach platform Like one of your classmates pointed out, the PPC to engage with a niche target audience can be very high. And in a relatively small market like Singapore, wouldn't it just be cost effecient to use Facebook as a reach tool (i.e. send out an ad to a very large group of people, without aiming to generate engagement (likes / comments)). And if so, would you rather use Instagram as a engagement platform (because IG still has a very high organic reach rate, and as a platform, boasts high engagement rates). Feel free to ask me questions on anything you uncover in your research! -------- About Me I am an Account Manager at Tribal Worldwide - one of the top digital ad agencies in Singapore, where I manage the Unilever haircare portfolio (including brands like Sunsilk, Clear, Toni & Guy and Dove). I’ve been kindly invited by your classmate, Charlotte Lee, to weigh in on some of yout thought-provoking discussions. A little more background: I’m also a proud NUS CNM alumnus! In 2013, I took part in the DDB Worldwide graduate training program (some of you know this as the Sparks program) and thereafter, landed a job at DDB / Tribal Worldwide. It’s been a fabulous journey so far and I’m glad for this opportunity to give back to the NUS community. Please feel free to reach me at daniel.anand3@gmail.com Cheers! |
