History of the NS World Fair NationStates World's Faire (2005-2007) The first series of World Fairs in NationStates were titled, "NationStates World's Faire" and were hosted on an independent forum much like the contemporary World Fairs. The first World's Faire was hosted by The East Pacific; The Faire opened on February 01 2005 with an announcement from The East Pacific's delegate, 1 Infinite Loop. On March 01 2005, 1 Infinite Loop also announced that the Faire would run "indefinitely" because he expected the NS World's Faire to grow as time passed. However, the Faire had largely died down by late February. What could one expect from an old Faire? Well, the structure of the event may seem oddly familiar to modern readers. While the NS World's Faire was focused on the Gameplay Community (popular regions), it was divided into pavilions which were maintained by participating regions and organizations similar to the "Regional Venues" of the modern NS World Fairs. The following regions and organizations maintained pavilions at the 2005 NS World's Faire: The East Pacific, The South Pacific, Gatesville, International Democratic Union, The United Nations Organization, The New Meritocracy, Canada, USSR, Lazarus, Lemuria, Mordor, Wysteria, Solarius, International Red Cross and the Boulevard of Regions. (The East Pacific Suites were the official hotels of the 2005 Faire) Participants during the Faire could also submit "Advertisements" for their region/pavilion, which would be displayed on the Faire's forum. The following are some surviving advertisements:
The next World's Faire was arguably less successful (some blamed the registration process); it took place in 2007 and was hosted by The West Pacific on the same independent forum. A NS World Fair for A New Generation (2010- ) There was a brave and ambitious attempt during the summer of 2010 to launch a World Fair called the 2010 Summer of NationStates. Kandarin and Naivetry were its main organizers. The hope with the "Summer of NationStates" program was to capture a wider vision of NationStates by including all of the different communities of NationStates (e.g., World Assembly, International Incidents). Some of the events that were planned included a competition to invade Warzone Asia, WA Resolution Judging Competitions, An International RP Gala, Contests for Art, Regional Message Boards and Regional Postcards as well as a Scavenger Hunt. Ulthar, a region that experiments with puppet nations, were also planning a competition to see who could get a nation within the Top 100 of a Daily World Census and a "Collective Nation" event where the public decided a nation's issue selection. Sounds like fun! Unfortunately, the "Summer of NationStates" never was realized. However, the idea of a NationStates-wide event had stuck in the mind of one ambitious newbie who at the time had been asked to assist in organizing the WA Resolution Competition. That newbie would, of course, be me: Unibot. In 2012, Unibot and Todd McCloud co-founded the NS World Fair, with the idea in mind that a large interregional, game-wide fair could honour the tenth anniversary of NationStates (November 10-13 2012). The 2012 NS World Fair was independently run and did not have a Host Region or Organization (besides the NS World Fair Committee). The 2012 NS World Fair was run on an independent forum with Sedgistan and Euroslavia serving as Admins. "Diversity and Unity" was the theme of the World Fair. Its opening ceremonies on November 10 began with these opening thoughts...
The NS World Fair had Regional Venues for regions and organizations to show off their cultural value with promotional items, forum games, debates, discussions, lectures – participatory and informative threads. Moreover, The Fair also boasted a Lecture Hall for high-profile speakers. Naivetry and Kandarin gave a lecture on "Practical Morality" and Westwind was the center of a Question and Answer session. Meanwhile, Unibot, Stoklomolvi, United Gordonopia, Glen-Rhodes, Todd McCloud and Kylarnatia published essays for readers to discuss and debate a wide range of topics (i.e., Gameplay, Roleplay, Global Economics and Trade and the World Assembly). Additionally, Zwangzug organized an impressive football tournament, the Fair Play Trophy and recounted the history of NS Sports. After, a solid three days of competition, The Holy Empire (aka. The Archregimancy) won the Fair Play Trophy. The NS World Fair also hosted a Convention to Redraft C.O.P.S (an interregional treaty on Forum Destruction) and a Press Room for the various press agencies of NationStates that wanted to cover the NS World Fair. At the time, Communist Quinntopia's NS Weekly was the most active newspaper to cover the events of the 2012 NS World Fair as they unfolded. For NS Weekly's coverage of the 2012 NS World Fair, see Article XVII and Part I, II, III and IV. Also, here's a relevant interview that Communist Quinntopia did with Co-Founder Todd McCloud for NS Weekly at the time,
Overall, the 2012 NS World Fair was widely considered a success and there were hopes to repeat the event with an even greater successor. On November 16 2013, The South Pacific was chosen by the public as the NS World Fair's host with a vote of 166 to 118 (against Democratic Socialist Assembly) - while the NS World Fair would still be hosted on an independent forum and the NS World Fair Committee (Unibot, Todd McCloud, Solm, Zwangzug, Communist Quinntopia and Soverignry) would still maintain influence over the event, the host region of the NS World Fair would help shape the vision of the next NS World Fair with its theme of "Friendship and Cooperation". |
