![]() ABOUT OUR REGION v1.0 August 11, 2015 The Kingdom of Alexandria The light of the known world, the Kingdom of Alexandria encompasses all the realms of the King of Alexandria. With the Enlightened City serving as the capital from which the King rules over the constituent parts of the Kingdom- the North, the Midlands, and the South- Alexandria is the beacon of civility in an age of darkness. A land of nobility, magic, commerce, and intrigue; Alexandria hosts a society which offers all Crown subjects a fulfilling and rewarding experience. Activity within the communities and service to the Crown do not go unnoticed, as paupers have been known to become princes if they catch the King’s eye. ![]() Alexandria's National Map About Our Government The government of Alexandria is fashioned after a traditional monarchy. The King is the head of state and has a small staff of Crown Ministers to assist him in daily activities of governance. These Crown Ministers are the King’s Cabinet. A Great Council serves to offer advisement to and petition the King in the matters of the Nobility, heraldry, magic, and otherwise. The Crown Ministers serve in this body, joined by the Princes-Palatine and the King’s Privy Councillor advisers. The Freeholders’ Assembly convenes to address the needs of the people and subjects of the Kingdom, and proposes statutes to become part of the King’s Laws. Lesser Nobles and gentry serve within this body. The King is invested with all the powers of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. The King appoints and delegates functions of such powers to other bodies of government as he deems appropriate. The King’s Cabinet acts as the Executive, each given a portfolio of government to execute faithfully. The Curia act as the Judiciary, as called by the Lord Justiciar or the King. Finally, the Freeholders’ Assembly acts as the Legislature by proposing laws to the King. Crown Ministers & The King’s Cabinet The body of government officials with portfolio and factional leaders which are invested by the Crown with a duty to serve and rightfully uphold their office. Cabinet members include Crown Ministers and those others dutifully appointed by the King. The Lord President of the King's Cabinet The Lord President is tasked with overseeing the King’s business, managing the Cabinet and serves as the executive delegate of the NS region of the Kingdom of Alexandria. The Lord High Chancellor of Alexandria The Lord High Chancellor maintains relationships with allied regions, distributes regional updates, established and monitors treaties, and briefs the King on foreign happenings- they are the region’s chief diplomat and emissary of the King. The Lord High Justiciar of Alexandria The Lord High Justiciar hears all complaints, both civil and criminal, and applies the King’s Justice as the region’s chief justice and attorney general. The Lord High Constable The Lord High Constable is responsible for the training and maintenance of the Royal Forces for gameplay actions such as raiding and defending; further tasked with gathering intelligence vital to regional security. The Lord Great Chamberlain The Lord Great Chamberlain is tasked with organizing festivals and maintaining the community calendar of events. Additionally, he will direct new citizens of the region to all relevant tutorials pair them with a mentor as needed. The Lord Steward of the Royal Household The Lord Steward is the technical administrator for the regional forum and website. The Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household The Lord Chamberlain is the global moderator overseeing official chat rooms belonging to the region. The Lord Privy Seal The Lord Privy Seal is the regional cartographer and chief worldbuilder; further providing artistic support to the region and serves as lead moderator for the roleplay community. The Great Council His Majesty may at times require council beyond that of his cabinet. At these times he looks to his Great Council. Included are all Crown Ministers along with the First Enchanter of the Sapphire Circle, the Archbishop of the Faith, and a number of non-governmental Privy Councillors valued for their insight and discretion. Peerage and Nobility The peerage is the system of ranks and titles of the Alexandrian nobility and form the basis of the Alexandrian Honours and Awards System. The Peerage also serves as the template for the Order of Precedence of the Kingdom. Prince-Palatine The highest rank and title in the Alexandrian peerage, first introduced by Joshua I of House Ravenclaw in July 1:YF when he created the patriarchs of Houses Montresor and Astor, the first Alexandrian Princes-palatine. A Prince-palatine is “Most Noble” and he is styled “My Lord Prince” and “Your Grace.” Margrave The second order of the Alexandrian peerage, in rank next to that of the Prince-palatine. Introduced in March 1:YF by Joshua I. A Margrave is “Most Honorable” and he is styled “My Lord Margrave.” Lordship of a Province or Large City of Alexandria is invested in the title of Margrave. Landgrave The third degree of rank and dignity in the Alexandrian peerage. A Landgrave is “Right Honorable” and he is styled “My Lord.” Lordship of a County or Small City of Alexandria is invested in the title of Landgrave. Burgrave The lowest rank and dignity in the Alexandrian peerage. Introduced by Joshua I in July 1:YF. A Burgrave is a “Right Honorable” and is styled “My Lord.” Lordship of a Sanctum or Town of Alexandria is invested in the titles of Burgrave. Knight-Palatine A hereditary rank, lower than the peerage but above all other knights, instituted in July 1:YF by Joshua I. Lordship of a Castle or Village of Alexandria is invested in the title of Knight-Palatine. Freeholders & The Gentry Freeholders and Gentry (non-assembly members) are eligible to vote in any National Ballot, or referendum; or present bills to the Sovereign's Court for the attention of the King. They may also own land or have other holdings within the Kingdom. The Freeholders’ Assembly The Freeholders' Assembly is a legislative house comprised of landowners within the Kingdom of Alexandria. It is open to all Subjects of the Crown who seek to join following a successful Residential Status Application. They are the sole law-making body within the Kingdom, and may present legislation to the King for his signature or veto. They cannot rule on roleplay matters (that is The Great Council). The Freeholders' Assembly is led by an elected Speaker, known as the Voice. Roleplay & The Sanctums Roleplay in Alexandria has three forms: Nation, Character or Feudal. Alexandria's government is based around the Feudal Aspect of Roleplay, and noble titles awarded will be reflected in that area. The Sanctums are three special areas which can be used for peacetalks, discussions or conclaves. They are demilitarised by default and are controlled by the Crown. Other houses control different aspects of Alexandria. House Astor in the North, House Ravenclaw in the Midlands and House Montresor in the South; each have different cities, leaders and personalities. They can also retain and remove vassals from lordships across their lands, so be wary about angering them - you'll need their permission and blessing to set up your own holding in their lands. THE HOUSE SYSTEM A Brief Introduction ![]() The Alexandrian House System, known as the Lands of Alexandria or feudal system, is the system of governance which determines the ruling house and thus Sovereign of Alexandria as well as the formation of the noble and peers system. It is based upon the map of the Kingdom of Alexandria and is designed as a characterised roleplaying world. With the exception of sections within The Enlightened City and the Crownlands (where the political government is based), the entire world of Alexandria is open to roleplay. This is entirely non-political as members of Noble Houses will not be granted membership to the Freeholders Assembly (Alexandria's Legislative body) although that is something that can be addressed on a case by case basis. ![]() Houses can be formed by the granting of honours, such as Letters Patent, or by buying a House Charter from the Crown Ministry of Home Affairs, and submitting the completed charter to the Great Council which then has the ability to grant or deny your request. If the charter is granted, it is co-signed by a representative of the Sovereign and forwarded to the College of Arms, which is the only institution of Alexandria legally empowered to issue Coats of Arms and recognise noble arms as directed by the Great Council. ![]() Currently, Alexandria's ruling house is House Ravenclaw, the founding House of Alexandria. It is the largest house and controls much of Central Alexandria, as well as the City of Sapphire and Mageholme in the North. The next largest house is House Montresor which is the second house of Alexandria and controls the South, bordering the Southern Wilds. The Head of House Montresor in Alexandria is the current Champion and Right Hand of the Sovereign, overseeing Military Operations and External Security of the Kingdom. House Astor follows as the third House of Alexandria and controls the North of Alexandria, bordering the Northern wilds. The Head of House Astor is the Dean of the College of Arms and their family have ties to a Druidic Enclave in the far Northern Wilds. Each House is entitled to a Seat of Power, or Regional Capital City. The Enlightened City is officially neutral territory and thus seat of the Sovereign. House Ravenclaw's Capital City is Coronpolis in the Heartlands; House Montresor's is Terenuthis in the Southern Hinterlands and House Astor's is Wintergarde in the Northern Forests. ![]() The Houses of Ravenclaw, Montresor and Astor form the Great Houses; three pillars of state that Alexandrian Society is based around. The titles of each head of house are Prince Palatine (or Duke elsewhere in NationStates). A Prince-Palatine is “Most Noble” and he is styled “My Lord Prince” and “Your Grace". House Ravenclaw has the option of giving the title Prince-Palatine to their Heir/Crown Prince while they hold the throne of Alexandria. The Minor Houses, which are normally vassals to the Great Houses, such as Holland (Montresor), Bluteisen and Lore (Ravenclaw) are families which reside within the territories of the Great Houses that may have connections, familial or otherwise to them. ![]() Residential Permits are required before residence can be officially established in any city of Alexandria, and in some areas, an oath of vassalage to the reigning Lord or Prince-Palatine depending on where exactly you wish to reside, and whether there is a reigning Lord enthroned. These permits can be purchased from the Crown Ministry of Home Affairs and have varying prices depending on the location you wish to reside. You may also purchase an Estate Permit, which allows you to request a forum based residence; the initial permit will allow you a public hall and a private hall, with each permit (up to 3) granting to an extra section public or private. Costs however, will be higher. Estates that do not remain used or active can be ordered closed by the ruling Noble or Sovereign at anytime and funds will not be restored since they were used for the construction of the estate.
