Saxis, California

Population: 106,976
Zip code: 96016

Location
It's 224 miles northeast of San Francisco. Located in the heart of the extreme west, Saxis is best known for the national park that sits to its south, filled with beautiful waterfalls, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and so much more. Far from being an isolated or small city, Saxis supports a wide range of economic and housing demography for its residents, from slum, to suburb, to mansion. Most of the city (which is fairly large and expansive, instead of condensed) sits in a medium elevation area of 4,000 ft, but in some places it can get as low as 1,000, and in the more mountainous north the elevation can be as high as 10,326 ft. Surrounded by an abundance of huge trees and the distant shape of mountains, Saxis is charmingly scenic, and somehow feels smaller than it really is due to its spread out nature.

Weather
Saxis' weather is pleasant, that is to say endurable, year round. The average temperature during the winter months is 31 degrees F, with a high in January of 35 and a low of 16 degree F. The hottest month of the year is July with an average temperature of 70 degrees F, the record high being 90 degrees, and the low being 45 degrees F.

Precipitation is slightly below average for North America. Most of the rain Saxis sees occurs in late winter, early spring, and autumn. Very little rainfall during the summer. The snowfall for the city is decent in the winter due to its higher elevations, ranging from an average of 5 inches in the winter for most of the city, and deeper snow in higher elevations. Understandably, the region sees a lot of sunshine, with over 90% of the days being very sunny.

History
Saxis was founded in 1863 as Blithe Canyon and renamed 25 years later. At the time of its founding, Saxis was just one of many company towns settled in the pacific west. Neighboring townlets did not last as long as Saxis, with most of them merging to become the Saxis we know today. Originally a timber company, Saxis has evolved into one of the largest western cities on the west coast (dwarfed still by San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles).

The first post office in Saxis opened in 1888. The Humboldt Bay Company and Eel River Railroad connected Saxis to the rest of the continent in 1885. This railway became part of a smaller western railway known as the Alpaca and Salamander Railroad, and was eventually linked to the national rail network.

The town was formed following the winter flood of 1863-64 when the Eel River crested a gauge height of 72 feet on December 23. Eighteen-million board feet of redwood logs and 23-million board feet of lumber were washed out of the Saxis sawmill (among many other mills in the region) and scattered along the lower river and Pacific coast, clogging estuaries and rivers. Through this tragedy, however, came what is known as The Tides Assembly, a volunteer gathering of over 9,000 oceanic Geis coming together to unclog the rivers and clean up the mess. The Tides Assembly brought many new people to the Saxis area. It is through this disaster that the first big boom of population occurred, bursting from a slim 2,000 individuals, to a gargantuan 14,000.

A large 1924 earthquake caused widespread regional damage. A fire broke out in Saxis’ only shopping center, causing extensive damage. The structure was rebuilt entirely into the well known Trilobite Emporium, found in the Old Town district in Saxis.

Attractions
The Saxis Museum offers a wide range of information on the history of Saxis and the surrounding areas. Updated in 2004, the museum now boasts technological and interactive information in a stream-lined and very fancy looking presentation. The exhibits and displays, though old, are tangible relics to a history we all know (or maybe should brush up on). If nothing else, it’s a quiet place to relax and wander.

Wayne Observatory is a non-profit space observatory located in northern Saxis whose purpose is to provide the public with information on astronomy and related sciences. There are many hands-on learning opportunities, and with their 360 degree crystal clear Cocoon Theater, the observatory is a special place to search the stars.

Named for Gina Hopperton, publisher of Little HotRod and Motors magazines, The Hopperton Automotive Museum is a salute to the car industry that takes you back through history and into the future with over 200 innovative, and sometimes interactive, exhibits of cars and motorcycles that enthrall not only car aficionados, but also children and adults alike.

The Heritage Museum is a museum and cultural center that celebrates the history and diversity of the telephone. Come see historical and contemporary exhibits and enjoy the not-yet-modern museum that celebrates the origins of the most important communication tool we have today. Not too hot on phones? That’s ok, this sprawling site offers an even larger facility celebrating the historical and modern Geis where you can participate in engaging lectures and workshops. There’s even an old carousel out back that you and your honey and kids can ride for 2 bucks a person.

Among countless other attractions, Saxis boasts one of the best hiking and resort areas in the northwest. Just north of the enormous Yosemite National Park, the beauty of nature can be shared even in the enormous metropolis of Saxis. The events, activities, and opportunities in our city are everywhere, and are quite endless.
