THE ANIMAL
WE'RE ALL A BUNCH OF ANIMALS

SPECIES: Iberian Bull

OVERALL APPEARANCE: A big, bulky impressive animal with a mean look. He’s dark umber in color, with a paler back and forehead.

DISTINGUISHING TRAITS: There’s nothing much that sets him apart from other Iberian bulls. They’re massive animals, standing at around 5'8 at the shoulders.

APPEARANCE
PAINT US A PICTURE

HAIR: Blonde, he allows it to grow to quite a casual length, though it’s always very well cared for even when he does let it go wild.

EYES: Very clear, pristine blue.

BUILD: Tall, and muscular. He stands at about six foot three, and weighs just over two hundred pounds – he’s a big guy, and he takes very good care of himself.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: He’s a big man, tall and broad, impressive and maybe even a little intimidating. He’s got a prowl when he walks, an ease and a grace that conveys confidence. His eyes are crisp and clear. He’s got a rich, deep voice, laced with an accent that makes his origins obvious.

OVERALL APPEARANCE: Nate is tall and broad, he takes good care of himself and throws off the aura of too much man in too little space sometimes. He’s handsome and fair skinned, with blonde hair with dark roots, varying in shades depending on the time of year and his exposure to the sun – going to an almost sandy, nutty blonde in the winter months and then a beachy, golden blonde the more time he spends outdoors in the spring and summer. His hair is fine and feathery, but he has a healthy, thick head of it. He has a tendency to let the stubble set in and looks pretty good in it, even if he’s wearing a nice suit.

He’s got a broad forehead and a widow’s peak you might miss under all that handsome hair. His face is a little square, with a heavy handsome jaw and well formed chin, he looks very masculine. The bridge of his nose is a little deep set, but his nose in itself is handsome and straight, very well set in his face. He has thick unkempt brows, and his eyes are a bit small and close together, almond shaped but highly expressive and they usually convey a great deal of kindness particularly when coupled with his broad smile, but they can be quite mean at times.

He’s got long legs, and a very square shape overall despite how fit he is. His hands are broad, knuckles thick and fingers long. His hands are certainly not made for anything like piano playing, guitar strumming or painting but rather physical work.

TYPICAL DRESS: When Nate is not working he dresses casually, usually in grubbies from around the house that serve yard work or workout clothes. He likes blue jeans and T-shirts, and knows how to rock a nice leather jacket over a t-shirt very well. He likes wearing hiking boots, despite the fact he doesn’t really ever go hiking.

When on shift, Nate’s dress varies depending on where he is. When in the office for paperwork or weapons handling, he’ll usually wear something along the lines of a nicer pair of jeans and a polo he has to dig out of the back of the closet and he won’t touch the hiking boots (he understands they wouldn’t go too well together). Depending on the flight he’s on, he’ll wear anything from the typical jeans, t-shirt, jacket combo to a nice pair of slacks and a button down according to which class he’s seated in. He goes for unobtrusive and typical, and he’s pretty good at it.

PERSONALITY
WHO ARE YOU?

Nate is a relatively uncomplicated man who values trust, honesty and loyalty and expects the same out of others around him. He is generous and practical, extremely good-natured he will do anything to help someone out. However, should someone prove to him that they are not trust-worthy, not honest, or unreliable he will retract that generosity as quickly as he extended the hand of aid.

He is stable, and can at times fall into the trap of being predictable but he enjoys his comforts, he enjoys his routines and tearing him out of a routine can rile that temper of his as quickly as anything. While he is not one for schedules or plans, he likes the stable base of routine – having dinner out on a certain day of the week, visiting friends on the same night of the month, being able to sleep in on certain days and being able to laze around after a long day of work.

He has a quiet power, and an accidental charisma in his honesty and humor that draws people to him. He is reliable, ethical and hardworking and honestly enjoys his work, making him a delightful co-worker, usually quite liked by his peers and regarded highly. People think they know him better than they often really do, as he has a skill for being somewhat guarded with more personal information, while simultaneously telling great stories, or having deep conversations.

Despite having that natural power to him, he is rather peaceful and it soothes people. As good natured as he is, as peaceful as he feels, and as powerful as he can be perceived he’s the sort of man few people cross, and for good reason as despite his peaceful, gregarious nature when he is drawn to anger he can be unpredictable and react with a destructive rage capable of making even the most stout of heart doubt themselves. He has a wicked tongue, and his honesty can be turned cruel and vindictive in these moments. He defends himself, his opinions, and those he loves with a ferocity that could inspire, a stubbornness and determination that may make some think of him as an ass. He defends himself even when he is wrong, and his loyalty will have him going down with the ship, even if he isn’t the captain.

He likes to have fun, and while he does enjoy his time indoors and laying about he is thrilled by the idea of adventure. Spending time outside, finding something to make his adrenaline rush, and sharing the things he loves most with friends are his favorite of past times.

He is a patient man, despite the connotation with his Geis and his temper. He can weather most storms with a smile, finding the humor and the good in most situations. He views most challenges as launching points, good experiences and adventures for the future, and riling him may prove a task. However, there are certain things that without a doubt can tempt his ire; crossing his family or friends or making any sort of crude, slanderous remark. He will take sides with those he cares for most, and he will be relentless, ferocious and cruel even without knowing the entire story. He can be blind and stupid, choosing to see a person only as they have been painted for him through the eyes of another and never allowing a person to justify their actions.

Very much about creature comforts, he is a typical man in that he can be swayed by his appetite. He has a ferocious appetite, he will eat nearly anything put in front of him but he values good food and will never turn down a good meal offered to him.

He is competitive, and can be a bit of a spoiled sport – indulging himself in the task of brooding after a victory lost to an opponent he finds to be lesser than he.

  • STRENGTHS: Focused and ethical, Nate can often times see through to the source of a problem and resolve it fairly. He is a hard-worker, a modest man and does not complain. He views most around him with an optimism that keeps him above worrying, and he is most of the time above the worries of most adults meaning that he can have fun, or again focus on solving a problem. He has a natural luck that makes him successful in most he does, a fruitful man, he does not waste and encourages others against it as well. He is passionate and dedicated, with a ferocious willpower and a protective streak that makes him a loyal, steadfast friend. He’s very generous when people need help.
  • WEAKNESSES: Stubborn, slightly mistrustful and a bit secretive when in the company of those he does not know he can often times be a little hard to reach on any level deeper than that of acquaintance or entertaining work buddy. He is very critical of others, and very honest and these two traits combined have been the downfall of a great many friendships. His temper can get the better of him without careful monitoring, and often times his mouth can get away from him as well. He can be blatantly, cruelly honest at times. He’s very competitive, and something of a spoiled sport. He has to be the best at everything, or he pouts.

  • LIKES: Laughter and people who will laugh with him, honesty and bravery, confidence in others, heavy meals like ribs and steaks that fill him up, any kind of food really, being active, the outdoors, strenuous activity, being handy, helping others out, classic rock, watching action movies and drinking beer late at night, horror movies, cheesy horror movies, sleeping in and spending nights indoors to bask from time to time, gambling and playing cards, hiking, camping, kayaking, anything outdoors really.
  • DISLIKES: Too many personal questions being asked by people he doesn’t know well, liars, people who cannot take criticism (as he tends to give helpful criticism quite a bit), losing to anyone he feels that he’s better than, being pushed to do something when he does not want to do it, pop music, people who complain to anyone who will listen and spill their life stories, anyone who doesn’t take him seriously, people his friends or family do not like.
HISTORY
HOW DID YOU GET HERE?

Nate was born in neutral Australia, to a raven named Lala and her husband Rex, the bongo. Funny names aside, they were very good parents – Lala a stay at home mother, while Rex roughed it up as a construction worker. Nate had a younger brother named Nelson who came along when Nate was about one, and being so close in age it made for a very competitive pair of boys.

They were raised in a suburb of Sydney, with a great deal of luxury as Rex managed to wrangle a buddy to go into business with and start their own rather successful construction company up.

He was six and a half when he found his totem (an Iberian bull), following a bad case of the chicken pox that had him bed ridden and hidden away in a dark room for six months. Despite this initial scare in his young life, Nate grew to be a healthy, rambunctious young boy with Nelson, who ended up being a skunk, much to Nate’s mixed amusement and horror. They terrorized one another, and most inhabitants of the neighborhood – rambunctious, pugnacious young boys with a mother who had grown up with five older brothers in the bush and encouraged their playfulness. Rex was usually too tired to get very angry about the trouble they caused, and with a weakness for Lala he simply laughed with her most of the time.

They visited the beach a lot, taking trips out with Lala while Rex worked and spending afternoons in the sun, sand and water. He took up surfing mainly to attract girls, recognizing that girls did seem to like the longer haired, bohemian boys who lived out of their vans more than clean cut boys who lived in the burbs.

After he found out that girls were a little more trouble than they were worth, he dropped the surfer act and resumed hoofing it around the neighborhoods in the summers. He did very well in school, with the occasional hump in the road (he was terrible in math and science) and a few fights that got him in hot water with his usually laid back parents. His grades were average, and his high school career was spent playing soccer and littered with the fizzling, dramatic relationships with girls his age. He was far more family oriented than some of his friends, and his time was spent with Nelson more than some of the kids at his school.

When he came of age at 18 his father took him across the country to Perth and dropped him off with a driver’s license, fully legally responsible for himself now and told him to find a job, and work his way back home. Rex left him there with no more than fifty dollars, and an offer for a job from an old friend in the construction business.

Rather than brood about it or use it as a soapbox to garner himself pity, Nate looked on it with a surprising upbeat nature and took it as a chance for adventure, and a good experience. He took that job offer, working first in a plastics plant on the assembly line and living out of a car he was able to buy for those fifty dollars. Needless to say, the car wasn’t all that great, and the first few months of his life living in that car and working in that plastics plant were not very easy. He went hungry from time to time depending on how he measured his priorities, and he had to find good places to sneak showers now and then for the sake of personal hygiene.

With a good work ethic like his father, it did not take him long to move on from the plastics plant and into a field that suited him much more – construction. The long hours outside, and the harsh manual labor helped him flourish. He went through the phase of drunken rebellion most young men do when they discover the fun in drinking, and he lost an apartment for the slip in control but was able to surf from couch to couch for a time during this period of homelessness, instead of having to sleep out of his car.

He spent a year and a half in Perth, becoming quite fond of the city before he found himself met with the irresistible urge to move on, in the form of a young woman named Mary who wanted to see Darwin and possibly join an entertainers group in the city.

So instead of traveling towards home, Nate picked up and headed to Darwin with Mary – a girl he had known a week at best, and had only been sober with for a handful of hours, just long enough to discern that she was dreamy and ditzy outside of being a very amorous and acrobatic drunk.

Through some funny turn of fate, Mary up and took off with another young man halfway to Darwin, headed to Sydney instead and Nate elected to continue on his way to Darwin. He found a suitable job in another construction company, and was overjoyed to find his younger brother Nelson in the same situation he had been in almost two years earlier. A period of drunken debauchery and irresponsibility that rivaled the first kick of youth followed, and they were jailed several times before they received a fiery oration from their very angry mother one night around the hour of 3AM following a desperate call for a wire transfer for bail after being incarcerated for urinating on an officer of the law.

Following several days in jail – Lala did NOT bail them out – they both decided that it would probably be better to wake up full aware of whom and where they were, and avoid being thrown in any other jail cells. So they picked themselves back up and took to working and actually saving the money instead of working and blowing the money on liquor and entertaining pretty girls. Things went well, with the occasional slip in self control that would end up with a car being wrecked and someone in the hospital, or a horrible break up that resulted in half of their belongings being thrown out a sixth story window.

It took Nelson and Nate three years to get home – mostly because of all of their partying and their thirst to see their small world. They left behind them a trail of bars torn apart by fights they had started, broken hearts and girls a little more rich after robbing the boys blind, boyfriends scorned by the loss of the girlfriend’s to the Black brothers, or entire, little towns sworn to kill the pair of them on sight. Nelson was an extremely gregarious drunk, who could inspire a bar to sing the whole national anthem with him, or call out an entire city over their choice of soccer teams. While Nate was wild himself, he put himself in the caretaker role more often than not, and was responsible for helping his brother out of the headlock some 300 pound rough neck had him in, or taking a sucker punch at the angry bushman he had insulted over team preference while Nelson tried to hold himself up on the bar.

When they got home they were both grown men – as much as they could be. They were both still wild and eager to experience the world. Nate was 20, Nelson 19 and when their family had welcomed them home as men and awarded them back their living space they were both suddenly faced with a startling realization.

Their goal this entire time had been home, and now that they were home, they were both suddenly extremely hungry for other things.

One night, drunk and in front of the television they both decided to join the army. In the morning, when they were sober, they both held one another to the idea and went to the recruiter before lunch had even been made for them by their mother. Lala and Rex were both extremely proud of their boys, Rex in full on tears while Lala suggested a day at the beach.

They spent several weeks at home with their family before they were carted off for basic training, where their superiors seemed to target the pair as if understanding that they needed to be straightened out more than anyone else in the ranks.

The training did something for the both of them. It helped them to grow. While at first they resented their separation it allowed them to finally grow up, and they grew into very different young man. Nelson took keen to the idea of making the army a lifetime career, whereas Nate was shocked to find just how much of a heart he had for people, after helping with a fire ravaged part of the country and serving aid to the people affected by the wildfires.

Nate served his four years, and unlike Nelson he elected to take his out from the military. Nelson remained in the army, which garnered him a great deal of respect from Nate and pride from his parents. When Nate returned home, he was there for little more than a week before he decided he wanted to venture out of the country, and on a flight to America.

While on the flight he got very friendly with the man he was seated with, and the man revealed himself (in rather poor judgment perhaps) to be an air marshal traveling back from an international flight. This idea immediately caught Nate’s fancy, and throughout most of the sixteen hour flight he badgered the marshal with question after question regarding the career. Being the affable young man he was, he won over the man and was given a great deal of information regarding the career, and even a few names and numbers to contact upon arrival in the country.

He was a month shy of twenty five when he arrived in the country, and used what little money he had to set himself up in a dingy apartment on the less hospitable side of Los Angeles. He immediately set himself up though to enter into the lengthy process of becoming a marshal, after of course he was naturalized and made a proper citizen.

While waiting on his career as a marshal to pan out, he took back to his roots and sought out a job with a construction company.

Several very interesting things happened to him at this point in his young life; firstly, he found himself actually in love with someone for the first time through a funny twist of fate he would have never been able to predict even in his most wild of dreams. Secondly, that sentiment was returned to him by the subject of his affections and it was not a drunken escapade gone wrong. And thirdly, he found himself in his first true and steady relationship.

Quite happy at this point in his life, the only thing he had to worry about was the process of becoming an air marshal. He spent long nights lying awake, or confessing his worries to his new found bedmate about the nights of incarceration back home interfering with his career, which he now found he was not simply interested in but very, very hopeful for. It was really the only moment in his life that Nate found himself worrying about something to the point that it made him skip meals, or impaired his mood.

The process panned out well enough. Call it a blind luck, or his slight charisma but the panel reviewing him took a liking to him for his ability to make them laugh, and of course his honesty. He was finally instated as an air marshal when he turned twenty seven, and quit his job with the construction company. Following his first few paychecks, Nate and his love interest moved into a home together in Saxis.

Nate has to make quite a drive into work most days, an hour into the city of Mariposa from Saxis where he is one of two FAM that work out of the airport. He spends roughly five hours a day on planes, and four of his five days on shift are spent flying, whereas the fifth day is left for paperwork and training. The job is very much weapons focused and the training for it is intense, even more so for Nate because he cannot feasibly rely on his Geis form in the worst case scenario. When not in the air during his days, he is responsible for paperwork detailing each flight he is on, so some of his work does come home with him.

The long days, combined with his hour long commute each direction means that he is at work quite a bit, his days are long and when he arrives home he is usually tired. Thankfully though, he gets weekends off despite the nature of the work and he only has to make one to two international trips per month and is gone at most two days at a time for such trips.

He enjoys his work, and despite the nature of it and how often it keeps him away from home, his housemate works just as much, is quite as independent as Nate, and does not ever complain.
