Alright nooblets, listen up. New Age Descendants is a semi-futuristic RP board. What does this mean? Well, you can just ignore the "semi-futuristic" part, you'll see soon enough. The "RP board" part, though, is what you should be paying attention to. For those who have no idea what an RP board is, continue reading. Otherwise, you can just skip this next part. What is an RP board? RP is short for "role-play". This acronym is termed to mean taking upon the "role" of someone else and acting or "play"ing as them. This means taking actions, talking with others, and even thinking like them. To put RPing in context, next to every video game has at least some level of "RPing", seeing as how you take the role of the main character/s and take actions for them. What does it mean to be an RP board, though? It means that you can create your own character from your own mind and move him throughout the world of the board. In terms of actions, they are taken using a turn-based system. What this means is...well, it'd be much better if I show you. Let's imagine, if you will, two different characters. One is named Bob and the other Sam. Bob and Sam are having a discussion within the RP board. This is how it will pan out: (Bob Turn 1) Bob: Hello Sam. (Sam Turn 1) Sam: Why, hello Bob. (Bob Turn 2) Bob: Lovely day we're having. You see? In the first turn, Bob said hi to Sam, and Sam responded. Each took a single action in a single turn. Now, for reality purposes one could perform a number of actions in a single turn, but the number and type of actions are usually restrained by rules set by the administration. For example. Let us say one of the rules is that you cannot say hi and ask how the weather is in a single turn. An action like this: Bob: Hello Sam. You ready for that rain storm? would not be permitted because it violated the set rules. Now that rule is outrageous and whoever came up with it should be shot (*is shot*), but I think you get the rough idea. Now battling is a different subject entirely. What battling is in an RP board is an action-conflict between two or more characters or beings within an RP thread (topic). In this case, it is not that much different than dialogue, except that instead of talking, you punch each other or something to that effect. Example: (Bob Turn 1) *Bob throws a punch at Sam* (Sam Turn 1) *Sam ducks away and sweeps his leg, attempting to trip Bob* (Bob Turn 2) *Bob is tripped and falls over, but brings his fist down towards Sam's head* (Sam Turn 2) *Sam is clocked in the head and falls over* Notice that neither Bob nor Sam say that they made contact with their fists or legs. Rather, they state their intentions and actions. It is up to the opposing player whether they are hit. Now, no one wants their player to lose, but be fair. Otherwise, it is considered godmodding. What is godmodding? It is acting beyond your scope of RPing authority. Translated, it's doing stuff that is "god-like", such as dodging everything thrown at you, even bullets, and always hitting with your attacks without ever letting your opponent have a say. Example: (Bob Turn 1) *Bob launches a swift horizontal arc, chest-height, with his sword at Sam* (Sam Turn 1) *Sam jumps over the sword and stabs Bob in the chest* Sam performed a dodge that is neigh impossible, and then simply stabbed Bob without Bob's say. This is illegal in RP boards and almost always ends in tears for everyone. Except the administration. They always get a laugh out of it. Always. In addition to godmodding, there is metagaming, where your character literally knows everything about everything ever. Let us see the following conversation. (Sam Turn 1) Sam: Look, I don't have that gem, alright? (Bob Turn 1) Bob: But you got that gem in Los Angeles after you killed that robber. (Sam Turn 2) Sam: But...but no one knows about that, not even my girlfriend... That is metagaming. It is just as bad as godmodding. Keep in mind this simple mantra: If your character hasn't encountered it, he doesn't know it. --- There, that's all you need to know about RPing. Now we get to the juicy parts: what the board is really all about. What is the basis of and what is New Age Descendants? New Age Descendants was originally a story I concocted up in my own mind that I originally thought "This would make a good story" and eventually deteriorated into "Man, this would make an awesome RP board." The idea was generated from too much Monster Energy Drink and Mass Effect (hence the semi-futuristic setting). Hey, at least I'm truthful about it. In summary, NAD is set in a future that doesn't seem so outright far away. The period between now and when NAD takes place is filled with a waterworld. However, in that period are born Mutants, a literal race of humans with special powers, and droids, man-made beings with the power to think for themselves. We'll get into the races soon enough. The land has been reformed into one giant crescent with mountains, valleys, plains, and lakes. However, things can't grow in most parts there, and there now exists a collection of harmful species known as the Drones that roam these areas. These are controlled by a singular sentient being called the Eonmind. Yada yada yada, you get the point. So, in effort to get space, humans and droids move to the skies with the invention of floating superstructures known as Arcs. Mutants, however, stay on habitable parts of land to commune with the Eonmind, who they believe gave them their power. The races came from the thought process of having fantasy elements with still a touch of reality. From there, I made a chart (that sounds so geeky) on the various benefits that each race would have. I decided to have humans as a sort of semi-superior race, the creators, if you will. After all, without them, where would the other races come from? Humans would be given full access to every aspect of the RP, minus race-exclusive benefits. They'd also be a lot easier to manage than the other two races, with cheaper upgrades and the ability to survive. I also chose to incorperate droids because...well, let's face it, robots are seven flavors of kickass, amirite? Like humans, they'd be given full access to technology (cause they're technology themselves), but they'd also be able to modify themselves to be given superhuman reflexes, strength, or things of the like. They'd need a con to them, so because their minds are programmed, they'd have a hard time of actually learning, don't you think? Mutants were included because the fantasy side had yet to be explored. I decided to allow them to be just as diverse as the X-Men. As humans with powers, they'd have the adaptability of one but the metaphysical prowess of something beyond. Giving them access to technology leads to mighty brokeness, so I disallowed them from having technology for the most part. Some of my friends have expressed concern at the relatively depressing and somewhat near nature of the history of NAD. For this, I can only say that it's merely a product of my imagination and would not dare to hope it come so soon. Trust me, natural near-genocide is not good, ever. Still others have asked why I didn't do a full blown space RP and instead kept it within the borders of a changed yet familiar Earth. Space-age RP boards, I've found, are extremely messy and need more definition than other RP boards. Besides, quick interspecial travel is not gonna happen for many a millenia (we'd need to move faster than the speed of light, which, if math is correct, is impossible). That's pretty much it, I guess. If you need more information about the history of the planet, the races, or anything else, refer to the databases. What are the races? There are three different races which you will be able to choose from: humans, droids, and mutants. Let's go over them one at a time. First we have humans. These guys are equipped with special augmented battlesuits and an array of different weapons such as guns, blades, and the like. They are relatively cheap to upgrade as well. However, humans themselves can't take much punishment, hence the need for a battlesuit to protect them. Next are droids. This mechanical race can be augmented directly. They also have immunity to poison, pain, and short circuiting. In addition, special "droid-only" mods can be purchased by them to give them super enhance abilities. However, droids are a bit more costly to upgrade. Mutants are the third on the list. Due to biological restraints, mutants are not able to use body suits or meduim-heavy tech weapons. They can carry pistols and most melee weapons though. However, they are able to execute special mystical powers such as telekinesis, weather control, and magick. Their toughness also grows with training and experience. --- Okay, you have all the basic information. Now, how do you get started? Where do I get started? Well, first, make sure you read all the rules. Here, you'll find all the information you need on battling, leveling up, the specifics of the races, how and where to RP, and things of that sort. You'll also find the application on how to create your own character. If you're having some trouble on the backstory, or you just have some holes you want filled, check out the databases. The majority of the backstory behind NAD is stored here, along with weapons, level-up systems, and Drones (the sort of enemies of the RP). You can always skip this part, but looking through these will only help you in integrating yourself into the RP. Please note: The main databases are not need-to-know. It helps if you have read these, but if you don't want to, then don't bother with them. Lastly, you can always visit the OOC boards and hang out with fellow RPers and get to know everyone. Chat them up, freestyle RP, introduce yourself, make a meaningless topic, do whatever you want there, so long as it doesn't violate the rules. And most of all, you should have fun. That's what this board was made for, for your enjoyment. If something or someone is frustrating you, you can always contact me or another moderator to see if we can set the situation straight. |
