As seen first in Piers Anthony's On A Pale Horse Take 5 Matchsticks, and you can arrange as such to represent how you think. The first pattern of matchsticks is a series: - - - - - This represents linear thought, or chain logic. It is definitive and straightforward, although to use it, one must have all the correct facts, and be able to connect them in the right order. Additionally, a weakness of this pattern is that if the chain is in error at some point, the conclusion will be flawed and inaccurate. The second pattern is in parallel: - = = This represents many facts, all pointing towards the same conclusion. While not as far-reaching as the first pattern, it begets fewer errors. It is very powerful, yet tends not to advance thought far. The third pattern is divergent: | - - / \ This is the creative formation. Thoughts go off in all directions, relating to the main idea. Useful for problem-solving where there is not a set procedure, its strength is new solutions. However, this pattern is only useful at the onset of a block. Continuing thought in this pattern will lead to an entirely different topic, tangential to the task at hand. The fourth pattern is the schizoid formation: / \ |_| It symbolizes going around and around in a circle, trapped in one's own thoughts. While not necessarily productive to the outer world, internalizing can be useful to the inner development of the individual. When "coming to terms with an ugly necessity," contemplating one's circumstances, meditating on a desired goal, or simply enjoying oneself, this is a useful pattern. The fifth pattern relates to intuition: -|||- This is "a sudden jump to a conclusion," taking facts into consideration unconsciously. Not the most reliable method, it results in conclusions that are hard to justify. However, sometimes it is the only way past a block in understanding. After a conclusion is reached, one can then go back and fill in the missing parts by investigation or correlation with knowns. |

Now, Real Human thought is more complex, but this simplification works just fine for what I want to say. When I was listening on a conversation about Collision Detection/Avoidance in Networking, the expert guy explained how Collision Detection would 'listen' and see if any collisions have occurred. And if they have, All ports on the network stop sending packets for a random amount of time, therefore making sure that another collision doesn't happen immediately after because the time they all send a packet was the same. Well, that got me thinking, for some reason, about how number generators aren't truly random, so if the hosts on the network had a simple algorithm, like determining the random number solely on the current time, It could, in some circumstance, completely backfire. I started explaining it, but was interrupted by the other guy (Who also seems to think like me) with a question about where I got this information that I had suddenly burst in with. I was confused a bit, I didn't really know, so I just said it was from tech school. Well, that got me thinking, and if you understood any of that... I generally think in - ||| - My Mind naturally responds by trying to jump intuitively to the answer. Which is why I come to unusual conclusions, and also why I like speculating about the possibilities of Crossovers. If Koal thinks carefully, he'd realize how right I am. ;). I'm sure Rock would too. I also think in | - - / \ or - = = But using -|||- with every line of thought. The second one I tend to use first when my initial thoughts don't, often in fact, get it good enough, I attempt to think of parallel situations or facts that would come up with something, or to support what I had already concluded. And then I use the first, flailing randomly when I can't think of anything any other way. And when I'm really trying to argue, I also tend to use a perverted form of / \ |_| I'd jump randomly, bringing in random stuff, but it'd always lead to the same stuff, going in circles, in order to continue to prove it. I'd usually end up to the same, to 'prove' exactly the same argument that I started with with more behind it. Edited by Tasogare Reiken, Jun 18 2008, 09:23 AM.
