UN-09...

The Droid trudged along the ground, noting the higher slopes and steep ridges ahead. Despite the slight nervousness from foreign ground, he knew he had no choice but to keep moving. Shelter would most likely be available in some form on one of these mountains, and since the fate of one of the Encampments he'd last been to, there was nowhere else to go. At least, nowhere he knew of.

UN-09-E1...

While at the small encampment, before it was overrun by Drones of various size and strength, he was asked his name. It had been so long since he needed to recite it, he could not recall the name he was given. So long ago, when he and the Ten Snakes roamed this harsh land as a unit, he had no real need for it. But now, as he struggled to place syllables together to be spoken, along this trail that grew steeper in this cool night, he could only remember giving the little girl a blank stare.

UN-09-E1, "A...A..."...

She was with her mother at the time. He estimated her age to be forty to fifty years, though her haggard face could have been brought on more by struggle than age. She had the wise look that many humans seemed to have in the encampment; as though their short lives had been filled with horrors he could only imagine. The little girl was beautiful, and he very much wanted to follow her home and stand outside of her house to protect it... but her mother did not like him. Why? Droids did not seem favored in the eyes of humans, but this unit could never see why.

This unit.
UN-09-E1, "A.."...

This unit had a name.
UN-09-E1, "Asp."

Releasing a deep, longing bellow of what could be pride, Asp continued his trek up the mountainside. Had he a human face, it would be smiling.

Tristan heavily panted as he finally reached the top of a particularly high, steep ridge. He laid on his back, staring at the overcast sky above him. Normally, there were dull gray clouds in the constantly overcast sky, but today, they were colored with a darker hue. It's going to rain, he thought to himself. I need to get to the rendezvous point soon; I don't want to get wet.

Tristan sat up, slung his pack onto his back, and began to get up, only to have his legs collapse on themselves. He cursed under his breathe. "Dammit...I need to recuperate, rebuild my energy. I can barely get up." He unslung his back and pulled out a canteen with some actual cooked meals. Dehydrated food was always preferable when traveling in the wilds, but Tristan always much preferred the taste of actual home-cooked meals.

As he unpacked, he recalled what he was doing in the mountain range. The chief of Kibaba, his home village, had asked him a favor. A family had been traveling in the Moon Mountains for vacation and had been maintaining constant contact with residents of the village. Recently, however, there have been no transmissions, and the family's friends began to panic. Tristan himself was in no place to refuse the favor; after all the trouble he had caused in the village, he felt as though he owed everyone a sort of debt.

He undid his gun belt and set it aside; he saw no need to defend himself if he was only briefly camping out. Opening the container that had his food, he saw a set of 4 rice cakes and cooked fish with wild rice. Ancient family recipe, he commented to himself, and I never get tired of it. He took a whopping bite out of a rice cake. My cooking was never as good as Mom's, but there's only so many ways you can make a delicious rice cake.

Activity.

Asp stayed his path in dead stillness. His sensors detected a source of significant heat not too far away. Said sensors were relatively short-range, explaining the time it took to find him. Of course, the distant thump from a small fall didn't help stealth.

Unit Number 09 continued his pace, noting the movement patterns of the possible hostile. It was controlled and calm, much unlike any local Drones. This meant it was likely to be human, which unfortunately meant it was also likely to be hostile. For safety's sake, the Asp unit converted his left arm to its cannon status, keeping it slightly warm.

The flora reminded Asp of the encampment, the only home he could remember; albeit a temporary one. Though this was an unimportant fact now. It had been long since this unit had killed, and he feared he may be a bit rusty - literally and figuratively.

A much louder bellow came from the droid, in an effort to make his presence known to the human. With luck, it would flee, for Asp would dread nothing more than to take a human's life. Of course, judging from the sheer ingenuity they were known for, the reverse was perfectly possible.

Tristan nearly choked on his food as the bellow came from a nearby crag of rocks. Silently coughing up fish and rice, he scrambled to his gunbelt, taking off one of his katars and holding his pistol in his off hand. He stood up quickly, managing to gulp down half-chewed food before aiming his gun over his arm towards the area the sound came from.

Holy hell! How did that thing sneak up on me?? I should've known not to be so damn loud. Cursing his luck, he only hoped that the thing was intelligent. He wracked his brain, going over every Drone he could think of that would be large enough to let out that deep throaty cry. The only thing I can think of is a Scyler, and if it's one of those I'm screwed.

"If there's anyone out there," he said in a low yet menacing voice, "come out now and I won't have to shoot you. Don't...don't make me come back there." An image of him doing a rather gruesome act to a human flashed through his mind, which he shook off immediately, throwing it to the back of his mind. I'm not that man anymore.

A third throaty call resounded from the droid as he rounded the rock that obstructed his view of this human. He used his optic relays to take a quick note of the terrain, along with the human itself. Male, but the limited observers could note nothing further. Judging from physical build, this man was one of high strength for a human level.

And he was eating!

Asp never knew the joy of a warm chunk of chewed food sliding down his throat to splash into his belly, but loved watching humans perform the act. While he ran on an internal, recycling fuel supply, these creatures had the concept of hunger to battle against. Such a constant fight only made Asp respect the species more.

His impressive height dwarfed the rock he now stood in front of as he waited for the human to make an action. While he did keep the possibility of confrontation in mind, something told the unit that this human had a level head, not one ravaged by the demons of hunger or insanity.

A single look at the monolithic droid sent a shudder down the mutants spine. That's...not very comforting at all... he slightly lowered the aim of his pistol, but made sure his finger was still on the trigger, prepared for anything. While this isn't a Drone problem, the droid may have short circuited; it still might pose a threat. I wonder where it came from.

"What is your name," he said forcefully, "and what are you doing here? I don't have time to deal with enemies right now, I need to get to a certain place." He almost buckled over mid-sentence from lack of energy. He corrected himself to make it look like he took a step. Already, his weakness was becoming more apparent to him, but he struggled to keep himself steady and aggressive, though it was becoming increasingly harder with each passing moment.

The human seemed a bit hostile, but this was normal for any human. In nature, they had evolved to learn to treat what was foreign as potentially fatal, one of the thousands of things that now were programed into droids that humans had known or been doing forever.

The step the human took forward seemed forced; different from a normal step. Was the human in need of fuel? No, it was eating; this was illogical. Strange. Either way, Asp had to answer or risk confrontation. And Asp would do a lot to avoid the latter.

The droid not only disliked verbal communication, it was a bit slow with it, and thus replied:

"Aaaaaassssp."

The answer came in a sound not too far away from the bellows of before, though this was a bit louder for clarity's sake. It sounded much like a whisper from its depth, just loud as fuck.

The droid sank its shoulders a bit, tension lessening. While the droid did prefer a life of self-fulfillment, he'd never pass up a chance to protect, and the human may need some form of escort. He said he needed to 'get to a certain place.' If the human needed to get to a certain place, what better escort was there?

Tristan relaxed some more, both to give the conveyance of peace, and also to relieve the tension on his tired. "Asp, huh? Well, I suppose if you wanted to attack, you would've done so already. My name is Tristan Akeby. I'm a mutant." He sat down next to his food, keeping his pistol nearby, just in case the Asp decided to go berserk.

"I thought they kept military droids in top condition. You look a bit worn for a droid of your stature, Asp. Like you've been holed up for a long time. I don't know much about droid anatomy, but I could always polish you off." He took a large bite of the fish he had been eating. His hunger suddenly caught on, and he began to scarf down some more of his food. He turned back to the droid and motioned. "What are you waiting for?" he said with a mouth full of food. "Come over and sit down."

The droid cocked his head to the side a bit, the slowly approached the human's makeshift dining room. This human was...different. But, then, most mutants, as Asp had learned from the encampments before, were a gentler people. It was as though the changes brought upon them, the ones that stripped some of their humanity away, replaced it with more heart. Strange beings.

Finally, he stood near the human an his appetizing setup. With all the grace of an Asp in a china shop, he leaned back to pretty much fall on his metal ass, rumbling the surrounding earth a bit. Before further interaction, Asp mulled over the human's words. Indeed, at one point, Asp was in the best condition of any droid around, one of the prizes of his masters. Either way, the idea of a polish didn't sound bad, but the droid probably wasn't going to answer.

He looked to the human again. Something was written upon his chest. It was sewn into the cloth he sported, but the letters weren't at all legible. The language Asp had been taught - programmed to read was long dead, and while he could understand English fluently, he couldn't read for shit. He gave a grunt and pointed to the letters, reluctant to outright ask of their meaning.

Tristan wondered why the droid was acting so awkward, almost like it had been alienated for a long time. That would explain why it seems it's not good at speaking. It almost seems retarded, if I didn't know any better. He continued eating at a slowed pace, noticing the droid's mannerisms. Even as the droid approached and sat rather ungracefully, he couldn't help but feel pity.

Tristan heard the droid grunt. He looked up from his food and noticed that the droid was pointing at him for some apparent reason. Wait...not at him...he was pointing at his shirt. He looked down, hoping to see some sort of bug or stain, but nothing except the word "Freedom" was on it. He guessed that that was what the droid was motioning for. It doesn't know how to read? Is this really a retarded robot?

"It says Freedom. A long time ago, I...Well, it's a long story, and I don't like telling it." He bowed his head solemnly. "But...it's my vow to never become imprisoned again, both physically and mentally."

And now, he knew. Imprisonment does things to a person. True solitude for extended periods of time can change how one sees the world - or refuses to see it. Asp felt there was something deeper to this man, almost as though he were fighting to cover something that truly hurt him long ago. Something that changed him, maybe broke him.

The key lie in the word itself. Freedom. A fleeting, ever-desired concept, one this man had learned to appreciate, likely through force. The droid reevaluated his words. Imprisoned... Mentally. He wondered what the human was like before his confinement. Maybe he was a reckless one, and stole or killed without thought of consequence. Or maybe he was an innocent man secretly burning for revenge.

Humans were complex little things.

But the droid could sympathize. Imprisonment was, in effect, removal from others. The concept of isolation was the real spearhead to it. And isolation was something Asp knew well. He gave a couple curt, affirmative grunts before turning to look to his face.

Slowly, and with much effort, he spoke:
"I...can...hhhelp."

Asp really did hate speech. The sound of his own, inhumanly throaty voice made him nauseous. But it was the best way of communication, really. If only this unit were a telepath.

"System rebooting: Standby."

TX was notoriously prone to overheating, and overheating was disastrous in the wrong situation. Fortunately, TX overheated outside drone territory.

"System reboot complete. Generator online. Visual sensor's online. Weapon's online. All system's nominal."

TX's phorceptor's flickered to life, only to see total darkness. TX lifted his arm, with noticeable resistance and grabbed what had been smothering his face. He was completely overgrown with vine's. TX pulled off all the plant growth, creating noise that would be noticeable to sharp ears.

After TX had finished pulling off all the plant growth, he got up and tried to remember what he was doing. After about four minute's of thinking, he still couldn't remember. TX frowned at this. He knew that only one thing was certain: He needed to get out of the wild's and back to one of the droid arc's.

TX stood still for a moment while he searched his data-base's for the nearest landing pad that would allow for safe transport.

Tristan looked up at Asp and smiled. "I'd like to believe that. Unfortunately, there is nothing to help with, and I'd only be a burden to your journey." He looked down at his lunch, no longer hungry. He sealed the container and put it back into his pack. He stood up, his strength somewhat regained, and wrapped his gunbelt around his waist, securing his katar and replacing his pistol."Well, Asp, it was indeed a pleasure to meet you. Let the Eonmind grace your steps so that you are not attacked." He turned and began to walk towards a ravine when a thought occurred to him.

"Say," he said, turning slowly, letting his own natural abilities take effect "would you like to tag along? If we team up, our chance of survival is increased exponentially. I don't have many moves I can defend myself with, and you could always use the support." His own natural ability of charisma had worked on some droids before. However, he wasn't using it for selfish reasons; he could really use the giant droid's help.

---

As TX slowly rebooted and released itself from the plant's grip, it seemed his auditory sensors were going wild. There were sentient beings nearby! Were they enemies? Allies? Hard to tell; while the voices of a young man and a rare-talking droid were audible, they were at such a low volume it was impossible to tell what they were saying.

{Ooh! Combination ref-post! Cool.}

Asp stood and approached the human, delighted he'd reasoned of using him. In reality, Asp's ever-continuing journey had grown tiresome decades ago, and someone new to journey with was always a welcome addition. He stood next to the human eagerly, awaiting his new leader to decide upon the next move.

WARNING: SECONDARY SENTIENCE DETECTED.
THREAT: SUBSTANTIAL
PRIMARY WEAPONS SYSTEMS INITIATING WARM-UP MODE

These bright letters (written, of course, in an ancient language spoken sometime during the Age of Water rather than English) flashed across the droid's view as his single eye took a red hue. The towering robot placed a cautionary hand upon Tristan's shoulder as he turned to look behind him. Somewhere, down that slope, was a now-moving being that was armed to the teeth. Electronic snaps of activity were detected at a small focal point some distance away, which usually signaled droid processor function. AKA, droid 'thought'.

Both of the droid's arms began to warm around the elbow joint area, where most of the workings of the Asp Cannons were located. His sensors didn't have such a strong reaction to Tristan simply because most humans were not a threat. And his shell was built in a time when Mutants weren't even a concept. Meaning he'd never know the difference.

ALERT: HOSTILE TARGET IN THE AREA.
THREAT LEVEL: CONSIDERABLE.
TARGET IS WELL ARMED AND WELL ARMOURED.
USE OF ASSASSIN PROTOCOL'S ADVISED.

TX's phorceptor's started glowing bright red as his assassination protocol's were engaged. He was built as an assassin droid, something that was highly illegal and could get you the death penalty if you were caught with one or caught making one. His main purpose was to kill, and it was what he did best. Though as illegal as he was, his secondary processor, which removed the inhibitor's which would normally prevent a droid from harming a human being, was his most dangerous aspect. TX could easily turn on anyone, if it was for his own personal gain. This, combined with his personality matrix, made TX extremely unstable and very unpredictable. TX was as much a threat to himself as he was to anyone else, so who was to say that it was another sentient being that was being identified as a threat.

TX began to charge his weapon, and make his way to the base of the hill, which was not that far away, keeping his earing sharp to listen for the target that was deemed hostile.

Tristan smiled as the droid began to follow him. That makes me feel better. I can't really defend myself on my own. "Alright. What I'm out here to do is to find an encampment that has recently lost radio contact, about a couple days ago, and--" Asp's massive hand rested on Tristan's shoulder, which was responded with a snapped twirl. He noticed Asp being alert and saw as its arms changed into cannons. "Asp, what's the matter? Is there something coming?"

---

Readings across TX's field of vision alerted that someone, or something, had responded to his presence. This either meant that the target had amazing awareness or that the target was a droid, as originally thought. More than that, a very faint biological reading appeared, being recognized as a mutant, though one physically weak.

Asp replied not, now fully turned to the direction of the electrical anomaly. Now, it had almost vanished. Meaning it was likely a stealth droid. Stealth droids were illegal, if Asp's memory was correct. Meaning that it was liable to be from an underground or secret group conspiring to kill one of them.

Droids, as Asp saw, were basically weapons, and thus always posed some form of threat. He shifted his large frame to his right, now covering Tristan entirely from any possible fire. It was an automatic thing, really, considering he was built to fight for humans.

Instead of taking the better choice, Asp released a lengthy bellow, an animalistic warning. Hopefully, this droid was misguided or on its way to another location, and would do the pair no harm.

The bellow filled TX's auditory sensors, eliminating any doubt of a wild goose chase. There was to be blood.

---

The droid finally came into range of vision, and Tristan finally caught a glimpse of TX. "Is that what's the matter, Asp?" Tristan asked somewhat worriedly. "It doesn't look friendly. And it's weapons are armed. We've got no choice, we've got to take it out." Tristan unfastened his katars and fastened them to his hands. They felt...comfortable, like they were where they belonged.

Tristan forced his mind link onto TX, ensuring his mental attacks were to hit. He backed up as TX charged, letting Asp make the first move.

The unit's targeting systems began activation. A thin, spinning red circle surrounded TX's head, the likely point of all complex processing. If Asp was right, and could get rid of that thing's head, the pair would be well off.

Noting Tristan's backward movement, Asp took a step forward and stood straight, his full height now visible. He heroically raised both cannons with a simple elbow-bend, and with a threatening roar, unleashed a searing stream of white energy, his left cannon aiming for TX's head while his right aimed for the torso.

Tristan concentrated for a second, using his powers to cause TX to see images small images in its peripherals. The act caused TX to avert its eyes for a second, long enough to bit hit with the full force of Asp's cannons (TX -12 HP). The attack threw TX a good distance, after which, he tumbled and stood just as forceful as before. He raised his cannon arm and fired a massive burst of energy at the duo, a great many shots.
