Great Library (Revised Feat from Secrets of Skelos, Page: 119-120)

The Khitan scholar sat hunched over the table of old tomes and dried scrolls, the candles burned low as he worked at his research. He scribbled down his notes using a long peacock feather quill and hummed and clucked a tune as he wrote. He smiled as he raised the scroll he had written up to the candle light. Three days he had worked at it and he would be paid well for his work in deciphering and studying the lost lore for the proud noble, maybe the noble would let him keep the books to add to his collection, but he could only hope!

1: Great Library generates 25 ranks to be dispersed between 2 - 5 subjects (one book per subject or few scrolls) as seen fit by you and the Game Master who must come to a decision on what subjects are taken, this is classified as a Small Library. No single book/bunch of scrolls can have lower that 5 ranks or higher than 12 ranks. 4 hours research time.

2: The knowledge ranks will start to stack with the previous selection of the Feat, so after 1st selection which is a Small Library (as shown on Page 120; Secrets of Skelos Chart) a second taking of “Great Library,” will generate a total of 50 ranks (25 from previous +25 more from this selection of Feat) and create a Medium Library. Subject ranks are between 5 – 20 ranks. If more subjects are selected, they must come from new knowledge rank points. 4 hours research time.

3: Third selection of this Feat generates only 75 ranks and the library remains the same, as a Medium Library. The subjects can only be of 5 - 20 ranks in knowledge. Research time the same.

4: The Forth selection of the Feat generates the extra +25 rank points and creates a Large Library of a total 100 knowledge ranks. The maximum knowledge ranks rise to 30.

5: Fifth selection is only 125 and treated still as Large Library.

6: Sixth selection of this Feat creates a Huge Library with 150 points. Maximum knowledge ranks is now 40. Research time rises to 8 hours. This is now a large room stacked with books.

Further selections of this feat is possible...

8th selection of this Feat creates a Gigantic Library, 200 knowledge ranks with maximum knowledge ranks of 45 per subject. With a 12 hours of research time. A great vault with thousands of books.

The 12th selection of this Feat will generate a Colossal library of 300 knowledge ranks with maximum knowledge ranks of 50 per subject. Research time is now 24 hours and is a massive mansion of rooms of books.

Note: It is my suggestion for those who use this idea to allow Scholars to use their Sorcery Style Feats to take the Great Library Feat.

Note: The time spent on research is still calculated the same way as describe in Secrets of Skelos, Page 119.

Now where to put Books and Scrolls: A House or Tower. Game Masters may allow after Large Library size to allow for a building to be added with “Great Library,” Feat. The Large Library can be carried around in a chest size compartment, but a Huge Library and beyond must become a permanent residence and the Player and Game Master must generate a story in how a Scholar came about these books and scrolls (inherited, looted from previous adventures, bought with treasure found, etc).

Note: Profession (Librarian) Reduces time by half for a successful roll based on the Library total ranks in the subject requiring research. For each 5 ranks above require DC will reduce research by a further half. 'Taking 10,' is allowed, but not 'Take 20.'

Calculate total time as explained in page 119 of Secrets of Skelos then apply any modified time for Profession (Librarian) results.

Example A 6th level Scholar owns a Large library, he needs to research a question on Noble etiquette for a rich client, his books on the subject are Knowledge (Nobility) of 25 ranks. He Has Profession (Librarian) skill of +8 total modifier and cannot 'Take 10.' (The Player rolls the dice and get a low 3 +8 =11) He fails to properly index his books and scrolls and must take the proper assign time to research the knowledge needed.

Example A 8th level Scholar with Wis 15 has a Huge Library with a subject Knowledge (Arcana) of 25 ranks and a Profession (Librarian) of +16 (including Skill Focus (Profession: Librarian) and can 'Take 10,” for total of 26 and spend half the generated time location the knowledge.

Example A 10th level Scholar with Wis 16 has a Huge Library with a subject Knowledge (History) of 20 ranks and a Profession (Librarian) of +16. He 'Takes 10,' and gets total 26. He will research subject at a quarter the time required.

Independent Sorcerers

Note: In theory I would allow this Library to assist Independent Sorcerers to research their next Sorcery Styles and Advanced Spells.

Example: A Hyborian Sorcerer takes "Great Library," Feat at 1st level twice. He Assign the maximum to Knowledge (Arcana) 20 ranks. Then once he needs to learn any New Sorcery Styles or Advanced Spells, he can spend the time in study to save any problems and loss of research he may have previous gained for these sorceries.
