Feats of the Blood Theurgist

He raised the knife to the moon-lit sky, focusing his thoughts on the cold breeze as he allowed it to calm his mind. Blood dripped from the knife as he chanted his incantation and from the distant surrounding hills the sound of thunder rumbles like drums echoing of a prolific event to come!

Feats of the Blood Therrgist is optional rules for the Conan the Roleplaying Game.

The Blood Theurgist is the only Class or Prestige Class to be assigned it's own Sorcery Style and therefore has become an obsession of mine (So once complete; I gain more permanent Power Points) to sort it into the game mechanics.

Three options:

1: Just allow Scholar to take Sorcery Style and not bother about prerequisites.

2: Use the Prestige Class which is now been added to Thurian Continent, but I have done some changes to Prestige Class and hopefully made it more coherent as think some things were rushed and not edited properly. Blood Theurgist: Prestige Class.

3: I created Feats which I will place here to allow for access to Blood Witchery Sorcery Style without taking levels in Prestige Class or even a level in Scholar if it not require by Player's idea of his Character's growth! They are complexed rules, but once comprehended, I think they will have a near realistic effect on game, though maybe some changes in future will be made or individual Game Masters can improve on them.

Note: The first Feat "Blood Link," has had it's prerequisites alter by me, I believe feats like Hexer which require a Magic Attack bonus of +1 is more powerful than the "Blood Link," feat from the "Barbaric Sorcerer," sourcebook which requires a +2 MAB.

Blood link: (Sorcery)

You can use the blood of a spell's target to enhance the chance of success.

Prerequisites: Knowledge (Arcana) 6 ranks.

Benefit: By adding at least 4 fluid ounces of blood taken from the intended target of a spell, you gain a +1 enhancement bonus to and check or magic attack bonus roll made as part of a spell, so long at is involves the blood's donor.

Blood Theurgist Adjudication: (Sorcery)

Prerequisites: Blood Link, Base Magic Attack Bonus +1, Con 13, Concentration 4 ranks, Heal 2 ranks, Knowledge (Arcana) 4 ranks, Perform (Ritual) 4 ranks.

Benefit: Gains the use of the Blood Witchery Sorcery Style and it's basic spell Lend Essence. If no Defensive Blast has been gained freely previous to the taken of this feat, then the Blood Witchery Defensive Blast (Blood Rage) is also gained, but if a character has gained Defensive Blast previously; for example: from an attained Scholar level, then it is not gain with this feat.

* Gains Base Power Points of 4 + Wisdom Modifier, if he previous has Base Power Points for Dabbler Feat or other Class, he gain a +2 bonus to his Base Power Points.

Note: This Feat is to replace taking the Blood Theurgist Prestige Class, it does not allow for easy growth, as other Special Abilities used by the Blood Theurgist must be gained by using feats gained at bonus levels.

Note: I not add Code of Honour restriction as I believe that Aztec Culture may have used Blood Magic and they to me are classified as a Civilised Culture.

Note: I not give the need for two Sorcery Styles as a prerequisite for this Feat, because I want the Sorcerer to solely be able to use the Blood Magic on it own and not be burdened by other Sorcery Styles, if the sorcerer choices to do so! I also lowered Base Magic Attack Bonus to +1 and Skill ranks to represent an easier gaining of Blood Theurgist power as it not as potent without the other abilities and progress is slowed by feat restrictions.

Note: No levels in Scholar is needed to gain this feat, this is done on purpose as I imagine an Apache warrior taking his feat to eventually gaining blood brother spell using the Blood Magic feat (see below) to gain that Advanced Spell, eventually. Of course levels in Scholar would help gain Advance Spells faster, but it still an option for non-Scholars to gain this Sorcery Style.

Note: A Blood Theurgist will still need to inflict self-damage on himself to cast his spell, whether or not he has the Blood Rites feat to turn blood into Power Points. He must generate at least half the Power Points for Self-inflicted damage, but used his Base Power Points in lieu of blood generated Power Points till he gain Blood Rites feat. This act is consider a free action as part of the casting of a spell.

Example:

A 10th level Cimmerian Barbarian with a Wisdom of 15 had taken Blood Theurgist at 9th level and gained lend essence and blood rage as bonus spells (note; Cimmerain is not regarding his feat a magical, ask Crom he knows!), and also using Blood Magic feat (see below) gains the binding of blood spell at 10th level Favour Class bonus feat. He still does not have Blood Rites and cannot convert blood into Power Points, but he must still generate Power Points for spells and inflicted damage equal to half the spells Power Points. He wishes to cast binding of blood on a fellow Cimmerian before explore a demon infested cavern at the base of the Eiglophian Mountains and inflicts a minimum of 3 points of damage on himself, but must generate the full Power Points for his Base Power Points which reduces him to zero power Points.

Best option is to use an implement that does only one point of hit point damage for low Power Point spells and justify the act to generate the material component needed to cast a Blood Witchery spell.

Note: A typical Character Male has about 12 pints (192 fluid ounces) of blood in his body.

Note: Any notification mentioning Blood Theurgist Class level in spell description, is now considered as the total characters Class levels he has; Example a 4th level Scholar and 8th level Barbarian is considered a 12th level character, even if he is obsessed!

Note: A Character that does take this feat is treated as a Sorcerer in most aspects, though does not have to consider themselves as one. They cannot suffer by the Rule of Obsession for the Blood Witchery Sorcery Style as is more a group/tribal magic than was first considered. It protect and heals those the caster cares for and this is not a strict Sorcerer's behaviour. Of course if a Character did take a level in Scholar the Rule of Obsession will be activated.

Blood Rites: (Sorcery)

By drawing on their own blood, the sorcerer can cast their spell with a tap of hidden reserve of power from their veins and arteries.

Prerequisites: Blood Theurgist Adjudication Feat.

Benefit: A Blood Theurgist gains 1 Power Point per hit point of self-inflicted damage caused during the casting of a spell. A character at 6th level (example; any combination of Classes: 2nd level Thief/4th level Scholar) the Power Point gained is increased to 2 Power Points, and at 12th level it is increased again to 3 Power Points.

Wound caused by anyone other than the Blood Theurgist cannot be gained as Power Points is that fashion; this is a supernatural ability.

Note: Every time this ability is used the Blood Theurgist must make a Corruption save (DC 10 + self-inflicted damage).

Note: A character must generate at least one hit point of self-inflicted damage to generate a Blood Witchery spell, whether he has this feat or not. This feat gives him the benefit of transferring the blood used into Power Points and benefiting from the act.

Note: A long Needle that does 1 damage is probably the best implement, a knife if desperate for more damage and spells that require a greater amount of Power Points. But be realistic, if a greatsword does 2d10, he can not impale it into the ground and take a good run at it and inflict 2d10 points of self-inflicting damage on himself. He must have some control over his actions and be logical, he will not want to kill himself to cast a spell unless he performing a “Heroic Act!” that ends his life to save others in group or kill the Demonlord.

Note: Power Point of spells in the Blood Witchery conglomeration of lore; Power Points in brackets.

* Low Power Spells: Lend essence (2), bloodlust (1), blood sayer; lesser (2), bodily defiance of Poderon (1 +1/level).

* Medium Power Spells: Binding of the blood (6), blood sayer; greater (7), bodily defiance of Poderon (1 +1/level), healer's gore (4), life's might (3 +1/+1 Str), Vengeful Wound (5).

* High Power Spells: blood brother (12), bodily defiance of Poderon (1 +1/level), life's might (3 +1/+1 Str).

This gives an idea to Blood Theurgists how much of a self-sacrifice he must make and to cast a spell.

Low powered Spell; He will use a long hairpin to stab himself.

Medium Powered Spell: A knife, dagger or poniard, spear-tips (hunting spear blade-head only 1d4 + Str Modifier, warspear: 1d6 + Str Modifier).

High Powered Spells: a shortsword, machete, axe.

A weapon like a greatsword or tulwar need swung to generate the damage they inflict, not a caster rubbing their arm up and down the blade edge, at most it will inflict half the damage for self-inflicting damage (and not allowed to add Str Modifiers for such a large weapon).

* Optional Rule: The Game Master could allow an attack roll to be made by the Blood Theurgist on himself as a free action while casting the spell. The reason for this is to allow for chance of critical hit on self, but it also allows for fumble, if he rolls one and then rolls a 4 or lower on second dice roll, he drops his blade. But whether he drops blade or not, he failed to cast spell, ruining what Power Points he attempted to put into spell in first place. If he attempts this option, he is classified as helpless with Dex of 0 and give him a Base Defence of 5, but only to himself (no others will gain this benefit, unless he wanted them to) and in theory if he has Sneak Attack Abilities can use them on himself (he does not gain a -4 to his Defence for a melee attack as he performing the attack himself).

Blood Strike: (Sorcery)

Prerequisites: Levels in Prestige Class Blood Theurgist or Blood Theurgist Adjudication Feat, Blood Rites, Special.

Benefit: Gains the Blood Theurgist Special Ability: Blood Strike.

* Blood Strike has two options eventually:

Blood Strike (Self): Attempting to get precise damage from self-inflicted damage as part of casting of a spell as a free action: Dexterity check: DC 15 + damage required. If failed, the normal damage is rolled.

Blood Strike (Attack): When Character gains a Base Attack bonus of +7, the Blood Theurgist can make an attack on another to gain the blood for his spells. He make a normal attack roll versus the victim as part of the casting of his spell as a free action, plus a Dexterity check (DC equals targets Defence + desired damage) as an additional free action.

* If successful, the weapon damage is inflicted on foe plus the required damage form the Dexterity check roll is also inflicted and used to power the Blood Theurgist's spell.

* If he does a critical attack, he can choose to ignore it or allow the target to suffer the wound.

* It the attack hits, but he fails the Dexterity check, his attack hits, but does only half damage from bad technique. Failure to cast the spell also loses him the remaining Power Points he would have needed to cast his spell from his base Power Points.

* The use of the Blood Strike must be declared before the attack roll is made.

This is a Extraordinary ability.

Example:

A Blood Theurgist (4th level Scholar/8th level Blood Theurgist) makes an attack on a foe the foe Parry is 14 and the Blood Theurgist requires 3 points of blood from him to fuel his spell for a Dexterity DC of 17. It high, but he got flanking from one of his comrades and he a second attacker, his BAB is +7 and Dex 16 for finesse attack at total modifier of +13, he roll 10 +12 =22, he hit with ease with his flame knife as a free action while simultaneously doing the Dexterity check, he roll Natural 20 for roll and gains the 3 Power Points, he also did 4 damage for knife and another 3 for the Blood Strike!
