The Ruins of Dagoth Hill

They moved into the ruin across the broken wall to walk amongst the cairns and barrows, but could find no way into the tall citadel as , eventually they retreated and moved through the northern gate, it entered into a long roofless hallway fifteen foot wide and turned and weaved along the north end of the ruin.

They continued along the passageway till they reach another construction, a huge roofed building make of the same massive blocks pile on top of one another, with some laying flat, creating a roof.

They could see through to the other side, light shone though from a far courtyard.

"I guess we continue," hisses Dion.

"They all look like the same pile of rocks. Where do we go, boss? You are the only one knowing what to look for." The Vanir says to the leader.

"Yes onwards," hissed Zuheir in a faint tone, the walls seen to enfold on him and he also was in a rush not to be within the ruins when the sun went down.

"Tales tell of a demon who was given the task of protecting one of the items we seek," continued Zaheir, "but the demon was fickle and untrustworthy and appointed the task to a lesser. He it was told came to the Citadel of Dagoth and here he has remain for hundreds of years!"

They marched through the grand hallway till they reach the courtyard at the other-side and found themselves staring at the massive citadel, it was not a fabled castle or well designed tower, just a pile of cyclopean blocks raised to the sky, some hundred foot tall. The ground floor was easy accessible, but the top two hallways and the roof seemed near impossible to reach. Three vast opening for each floor of the citadel, with the far wall blocked by massive blocks.

To their left and right of the courtyard was two other Trilithon entranceways...

Wulfhere says "These stone heaps look like fallen Hyperborean castles...although more senseless and alien..."
The Vanir then comes nearer to the two entrances, examining them for differences and clues on possible threats.

Dion and Jubba followed Wulfhere as he explores the entrances, leaving the two Shemites to ponder the strange citadel.

The northern most gate relieved a large walled courtyard with more cairns and barrows amongst a faint film of mist, no sound of beast or bird was heard amongst the ruins, only a deadly silence remained to irritate their souls.

Giving the courtyard a brief look and Jubba instinctively standing near the gate to guard it and clench his cutlass with white-knuckled hand. He kept cautious guard while Wulfhere and Dion searched the other gateway.

It, opened into a wide courtyard that turned right some ninety feet away from them through another wide opening.

The others did follow, it was best to know the environment they trekked, Jubba was at the rear and keep a careful watch on each bend they turned, he half expecting demons to pour forth around it and attack them from the rear. But it was true, they did not appear, not until nightfall, and they had plenty of time before the sun would fall!

Only one building was seen, it has the huge blocked much like the rest of the ruin and a ceiling like the hallways they had passed through, fifteen foot high, and it's interior was dark and a pungent musty smell exited from a small two foot wide opening in it's side.

Inside was dark, Yussaf quickly lit a torch and held it high for the Vanir. Inside was charred remains, the black burned flacks of wood covered the floor with a small rise to the centre of the thirty foot square chamber, made from a covering of blacken bones, a mess of broken ribcages and Human skulls.

"Ymir. Devil-worshippers keep on using this ancient place..." The Vanir says as he silently advances, shield and sword ready for facing the worst.

"Tis true," hissed Dion, next to enter with Yussaf, his battleaxe firmly gripped in his hand.

But even though they witnessed the signs of bizarre activity and foul rituals within the ruins, there was no sign of life within the chamber!

The Rest agree and the group moves back to the citadel to stand in front of it pondering their next move!

Dion and Jubba patrol the courtyard, searching amongst the dried grass, while Wulfhere stand with the other two, Yussaf and Zuheir.

"We must find away to enter and reach the top," hissed Zuheir, "for I believe it is on the third tier we will find what we seek!"

The two Shemites nod their heads at his idea.

Wulfhere moves around the base of the structure, he searches, but no-where can he find a place to climb, no cracks the get a hold of or a place to get a footing!

A quick discussion and Wulfhere mentions attempting to create a pyramid of bodies so he could reach the first tier.

Dion and Jubba make ready at the bottom as the two Shemites climb on to their shoulders and help lift the heavy Vanir up.

They carefully take their time so none fall and the Vanir reaches the edge and pulls himself up onto the ledge!

In front of him is a long dark chamber, no rooms or doors, just a long hallway reaching into the darkness!

"Ymir, bless my stinky back!" the Vanir murmurs, not so sure if this was more an ironic uttering or a kind of prayer...WUlfhere lights up a torch and starts the investigation of the hallway..

The hall was long and dark and the torch fluttered and flickered from some unseen wind or from the musty stench which filled the chamber.

Wulfhere moved forward cautiously but could find no danger, in fact he found nothing, no sign of life, plant or otherwise. Not even the moss grew here!

He did note scars on the rock, as if many creatures had scrapped against it with sharpening claws.

"Where these bests come from?" the Vanir asks to himself as he keeps on going, curious if there are doors, openings or entrances.

It takes awhile and Wulfhere searches the complete stone hallway to find nothing, just one complete rectangle of space.

The rest of his comrades wait apprehensively below, waiting for his return!

The Vanir spits on the rock and to his companions he says: "Nothing here! I'm coming down".
Having said so Wulfhere comes back to the ground, deluded by the research.

"We need to get to the top shelf before nightfall," said Zuheir a little impatiently.

They tried a grapple hook and rope, catching the top shelf each time, but it would slip off when they attempted to climb and they could make no progress.

We could build a ladder," said Dion, "but there is no proper wood in this barren rocky land, perhaps we could travel till we find the resources we need!"

Zuheir gave it a thought, "we may need to resort to such a plan, but let us continue here for awhile, may be something will occur in our benefit.

But it did not and the explorers had to retreat as the sun was starting to lower in the west in a pink-red sky and casting long shadow of gloom on the Men.

Throughout the dark night, the moon covered by grey clouds that seemed to malinger above the ruins and drop rain upon them and though not heavy was uncomfortable and whats more the demonic screams and roars of the afar off ruins did not allow them to rest that night.

"I pray to the gods that they to not come our way, hissed Jubba, shaking from fear and the cold.

They kept watch through the night, none could sleep, but eventually the sun did cast it's light and slowly appeasred over the tops of the Kezankian Mountains.

"It is Time to go," stated Zuheir, "we will search for a woods to construct our ladder and return."

"That seems a good plan," ponders Zuheir, "we must travel due south, I passed through this country by caravan when I first arrived in the north. there are forest there, though I believe we are still a few days from them."

Barren rock to the east and dry grasslands to the west, they trek back down the hill side onto the plains to travel southward.

The days pass and the further away from the hill, the better the group felt. They eased across the countryside, the wind in their hair allowed them to relax away from the demon haunted ruin.

"Look there," pointed Dion as he scouted in front, beyond a ridge of a small hill a green swath of trees could be seen in the far distance to a thin haze.

Jubba grunted in joy, at last we can get to work and get out this god-forsaken country," he snorted at his part joke, but his eyes darted in his head, looking around him in superstitious fear.

They rode on, eventually arriving at the forest and some set to work cutting a the many exposed sapling to collect enough to create their ladder and a little bit more to be cautious. They would take the materials with them and build it back at Dagoth Hill

The night passed safely and the next morning arrived, it was then they made ready to return, mounting their horses and slowly making their way back to the demon haunted hills.

It was on the second day as the rode back through the craggy hills, that Dion riding in front, by a short distance reined in his horse his hand raise, then points to the hills in front of him in warning.

Dion's expression made the Vanir almost repent for all the wasted time...."What's up, man?" Wulfhere says.
