The Hunter By Nialldubh

Adventures: Hunters seek to gather food for their People and train to kill their prey with one swift arrow or javelin, ambushing unwary animals and returning to their village with their bounty of fur and meat. They waste nothing of the animal, using it's guts to make string for their bow or bones to fashion handles for knives or other practical useful items. A Hunter's life is a wild and free one, some often remain out-with of their village and live solitary life for most of the hunting seasons, others enjoy their position within the village and can and will work as a pack with other Hunters to hunt larger game. Hunters recognizes no authority other than that of their own, and only then so long as they are alone in the land of their People. They will recognise the wisest of Hunters to take advice from while in a Hunting group or among strangers in a strange land, they will listen and learn of what others have to offer, but remain independent and astute.

Characteristics: The Hunter is, by necessity, a fast and agile fighter, adept at laying ambushes and surprising his prey or enemies to their death. A Hunter relies on a quick, accurate strikes to bring down the most powerful foes among his targets before they have a chance to counterattack. This is all the better to allow the weaker foes to recognise their lives are in danger and leave peacefully or expect to die.

Religion: Hunters often swear by the local Nature God or God of the Hunt, while others hold to the Gods of their homeland. Some may worship the spirits of the land or their ancestors, praying for guidance in the hunt.

Background: Many Hunters are tribesfolk that roam the wild regions of Thurian, hunting and gathering as a way of life to survive, if they encounter a greater force than they, they tend to flee into the wilderness rather than fight. Hunters prefer the lonely wild lands, the sense of life and it's essence that forces every creature to survive or die trying. It fills their soul and gives them purpose to continue living as best they can. Hunters can be found anywhere on the World, in fact the Hunter is proud to say with honesty that it was the first occupation of Humanity and therefore the most important one.

Class Features:

All of the following are class features of the Hunter.

Weapon and Armour Proficiency:
A Hunter is proficient with all simple weapons and light and one handed martial weapons, light armour. Note that armour check penalties for wearing medium or heavy armour apply to the skills Balance, Climb, Jump, Move Silently, Sleight of Hand, and Tumble. Also, Swim checks suffer a 1 penalty for every 5 pounds of armour and equipment carried.

Track: At 1st level, the Hunter receives the Feat Track as a bonus Feat.

Favoured Terrain: At 1st level a Hunter gains a favoured terrain type from among the following: Desert, Forest, Hills, Mountains, Plains, Swamp or Tundra. At 7th, 13th and 19th level, he may choose an additional favoured terrain. All the benefits derived from favoured terrain are extraordinary abilities.

Any time a Hunter is in one of his favoured terrains and wearing at most light armour, he gains certain benefits as follows:

+1 circumstance bonus to all Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Search, Spot and Survival checks.

+1 Dodge bonus to Defence. The bandit is adept at using the natural features of the terrain to his advantage in combat.

At 4th level and every four levels thereafter, the Hunter's favoured terrain bonus increases by +1. His second favoured terrain bonus increases by +1 at 12th and 17th levels, and his third favoured terrain bonus increases by +1 at 19th level.

The Hunter gains additional benefits as his favoured terrain bonuses increase. If he has a favoured terrain bonus of at least +2 for the terrain he is in, he gains a +10 feet circumstance bonus to his movement.

If he has a favoured terrain bonus of at least +3 for the terrain he is in, he may use the Hide skill even if the terrain does not usually grant cover or concealment. If he has a favoured terrain of at least +4 for the terrain he is in, his movement bonus within that terrain is increased by +20 feet. If he has a favoured terrain bonus of at least +5 for the terrain he is in, he can use the Hide skill while being observed.

Sneak Attack: From 1st level onwards, any time a Hunter's target would be denied dodge or parry bonus to Defence (whether the target actually has a dodge bonus or not), or when the Hunter flanks the target, the Hunter's attack deals extra damage. The extra damage rises by +1d6 at 3rd level and an additional +1d6 every three levels thereafter. Should the Hunter score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied.

Ranged attacks can only count as Sneak Attacks if the target is within 30 feet. The Hunter cannot strike with deadly accuracy beyond that range until he learns to improved this skill (using his Hunter's Range Style at 5th level or takes the Eagle Eye Feat from Hyborian's Finest; Page: 76).

With a sap or unarmed strike, the Hunter can make a Sneak Attack that deals subdual damage instead of normal damage. The Hunter cannot use a weapon that deals normal damage to deal subdual damage in a Sneak Attack, even with the usual 4 penalty.

A Hunter can only Sneak Attack a living creature with discernible anatomy. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is also not vulnerable to Sneak Attacks. The Hunter must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach a vital spot. The Hunter cannot Sneak Attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.

Hunter's Range Style: At 2nd level, the Hunter gains Hunter's Range Style. This is an extraordinary ability.

The Hunter is an expert in missile weaponry and their speed and keen eye is admired by those who see them use their deadly ability, he is treated as having the Rapid Shot feat even if he does not meet the prerequisites for that feat.

In any case, the Hunter only gains the benefits of the Style when wearing at most light armour.

Endurance: At 3rd level, the Hunter receives the Endurance Feat for free. The Hunter's body adapts and endures the elements of nature with a resilience of harsh experience surviving in the Lands of Thurian.

Uncanny Dodge: At 4th level, the Hunter gains a instinct to survive in the wild and ferocious lands.

Improved Hunter's Range Style: At 5th level, the Hunter improves his knowledge of the Hunter's Range style he previously selected at 2nd level. This is an extraordinary ability.

The Hunter skill improves with years of practice and his ability allows them to make Ranged Sneak Attacks at a distance of 60 feet.

Note: If Hunter did acquire the Eagle Eye Feat (Hyborian's Finest; Page: 76), he would effectively be able to extend his Sneak Attack range to 90 feet.

In any case, the Hunter only gains the benefits of this Style when wearing at most light armour.

Improved Uncanny Dodge: At 8th level, the Hunter senses are like a wild animals and he become instinctively caution of his surrounding and the potential for a threat.

The Hunter will choose another bonus feat from this list at 14th, 16th and 20th level.

The Hunter refuses to let his prey escape, he is treated as having the Shot of the Run feat even if he does not meet the prerequisites for that feat.
The Hunter only gains the benefits of the Style when wearing at most light armour.

Human Compass: At 11th level, the Hunter gains the ability to automatically know where he is on land, even in the middle of nowhere. He has a detailed mental map of all the lands he has visited and how to get there from where he is now. This is an extraordinary ability.
