Anyone played this? Elite was my first major space sim. Yet to take the plunge on the new generation.

The bits I've seen the universe looks a bit sterile and once your past the graphics its quite shallow.
Killing pirates does nothing other than get you credits.. and same for killing law enforcement.

Don't get me wrong it has potential, but its wide of the mark as it stands.

I'd heard similar which is mainly why I'd stayed away (that and limited time). I may wait to see how it develops or see Star Citizen.

An eternity and then some later... is anybody still playing this?

Three years later, space madness seems to have hit again - you can now actually watch the pitch black void from the surface of a rock now.

I was just thinking for some reason of the original NIMA server closing event a few days ago and thought I'd pop back on here. How's life treating you?

Bizarrely I have actually just recently got Elite Dangerous but not yet played it.

Have you given it much of a look?

I spent about 300 hours in it - half of that more than a year ago, before Horizons - the other half the past months, infrequently, mission board flipping and grinding rep for a Cutter before the new patch hits and makes things potentially more grindy.

Out of all so called sandboxes this one is probably one of the most sandboxy kinds - it throws next to no content at you per se, merely what you could consider your own personal goals (be it acquiring and customizing your favourite ships, flying to Saggitarius A* and back, exploring colourful nebulae, taking pretty screenshots, racing through canyons in a buggy.. or a freighter.. even pvping if you happen upon a player).

Now this sounds promising, almost fun - the truth is, space is empty, you get to spend a lot of time attempting to distinguish fifty shades of black while hearing the pulsating noise your frame shift drive (warp engine) makes and... it's all surprisingly calming.
