Origin
In Xenoblade Chronicles, Shulk could use the Monado to enhance the abilities of himself and his party. He unlocked more arts as the story went along, some Arts were important to the plot, as he unlocked the Shield art just in time to save Reyn. Some Arts like Jump and Smash are exclusive to Smash Bros.

Ablity
Shulk uses the Monado Arts to increase his stats in battle, depending on the symbol and its color:

翔 - Jump (Green): Higher jumps, lower defense.疾 - Speed (Blue): Faster movement, weaker attacks.盾 - Shield (Yellow): Higher defense, slower movement and weaker attacks.斬 - Buster (Purple): Stronger attacks, weaker launch ability and lower defense.撃 - Smash (Red): Stronger launch ability, weaker attacks, lower defense against launching.

Activating the ability will cycle between the powers, in the order shown above, repeating after it's run through. After some time, Shulk's selected buff will wear off. Alternatively, the player can cancel the current buff by pressing the button three times. If the player keeps pressing, the abilities will start the cycle again. Shulk can not use the same buff over and over, as there is a cooldown of 10 seconds for each ability after wearing off or being canceled. Each Art lasts 15 seconds (after that his stats return to normal). Shulk can continue to cycle through the buffs even if he starts moving or attacking (to a limited degree), or even if he comes under attack.

Aside from the kanji appearing on the core of the Monado, there is another visual effect to indicate to the player which Art is currently selected, a colored glow that corresponds to which attribute is enhanced. Jump and Speed shows glows of respective color around Shulk's shoes; Shield glows around his chest; Buster envelops the Monado with the glow; and Smash shows glows around his hands. Additionally, in the WiiU version, the symbol of the corresponding Monado Art Shulk is using will appear the upper left side of his portrait.

Tips and things to take in to considerat ion
shulk is my main but I'm not the best I hope this helps you anyway
On JUMP state, Shulk will take 1.05 damage. Jump is useful for edgeguarding, as it improves air movement and will even make Shulk go higher with Air SlashOn SPEED state, Shulk will deal 0.75 damage. Not very useful for battles and should be mainly used in Smash Run's Run battle. On SHIELD state, Shulk will take 2/3 damage, deal 0.7 damage and become overall heavier. Another drawback of this state is that Shulk loses a LOT of aerial acceleration, which can make recoveries extremely difficult. It is, however, a very useful ability, as it makes Shulk much harder to launch. In 1 x 1 stock battles, if the Shulk player has a stock advantage, it can help the player do more damage to the other one before being KO'd, evening the stocks. On BUSTER state, Shulk will deal 1.4 and take 1.05 damage. Should only be used if the Shulk player is not facing a tough opponent who usually outplays him, because if that is the case, the ability is more of a burden than an asset.SMASH state should only be used if Shulk is on low percentages, as it can backfire if misused. Also, should only be used when the enemy is higher than 80%, as it roughly cuts damage done in half.If you find yourself being launched away from the stage at Shield state to a point where you couldn't normally recover, you can try to press the special button 4 times quickly. If done correctly, it will put Shulk in Jumpstate, but will only get him back to the stage if the player has not yet spent his/her midair jump.Be careful when changing powers: not only does it make Shulk vulnerable (because you can't shield or dodge while cycling through the modes), but you cannot use his recovery move until a power has been chosen.Players who try to main Shulk should develop quick changing between modes.

I hope this helped you! Oh yeah and don't back slash off the edge please
