Content to simply listen to the conersation at hand, Vale sat quietly. He smirked at Kala's comment about women lining his arms, but she forgot two very important things: One, he was in enemy territory. No maid would even approach him here, whether they found him attractive or not. And two: he was a prince. It would be inappropriate to be seen with any women he wasn't escorting, courting, or, in this special case, cleaning for. But back in the Kardon Kingdom, he had a line of young maids waiting hopefully for him to even speak to them, let alone court them. Yet, he felt content to withhold this obvious information.

Kala presented an interesting point: what if they were simply parts - symbols - of a much bigger picture? It could be. Or maybe they were really incarnates? Who could know?

"Right, well, what needs done then, my lady?" Vale said, getting restless from sitting still so long. If he was going to do something, he'd like to get it over with now, and chit-chat later.

Yeah, mine failed also. But it was better than my last one, I think.

Kala smiled, "Well... I need you to clean Fluffy's pen, feed her, clean the attic, and give Fluffy a good grooming!" She dug into a pocket and handed him a large key, "Make sure not to look at her right in the eyes, she gets offended..."

Gefren pointed to the little door to the side going into a sort of cellar, "Don't let her bite you!" He was obviously going to stay away from 'Fluffy.'

-------------------

In the cellar there was a huge, electric eel. It was chained to the wall and hissing like crazy. The thing was twice the size of a normal eel and had razor sharp teeth. It's clouded eyes darted around the room.

Fluffy? Whatever did fluffy mean? Vale had never heard the term before. As far as he knew, nothing underwater was "fluffy", so it must have simply been a name, though a strange one.

Shrugging, Vale unlocked and opened the door to the cellar. At first, he scanned right over Fluffy, looking for something considerably smaller. However, when he finally noticed the eel, he blanched and shot back into the nearest corner. Heeding Kala's advice, he didn't look the massive creature directly in the eyes, but he did absorb its length and massive teeth.

"There, there, Fluffy. I won't hurt you..." Vale said, his voice quaking. With every ounce of control he had, his nerves on fire, he approached the eel. No, he had no intentions of petting it, but the broom was on the other side of the room, and he had to fetch it. Besides, if he died in here, it would be Kala's kingdom that would pay the price, not Vale's. However, that thought wasn't as comforting as it probably could have or should have been.

Fluffy stiffened, rigid as a board as Vale came into range. Pulling up his resolve, Vale tentatively reached out for the broom, his eyes narrowed at Fluffy. If that thing attacked, he would have to be prepared.

And, of course, it did attack, once Vale had grasped the broom. It's teeth very nearly clamped down on Vale's arm, but the merman had dropped the broom and moved his arm out of danger in a blink. In less than another blink had flipped around and smacked the eel with his tail as hard as he could. Propelled backward several feet, the eel hissed and charged again. His heart pounding, Vale dodged and attacked once more, smacking the eel's massive head once more, careful to avoid getting his tail caught in those vicious-looking jaws.

The fins on his arms and back flattened instinctively, but all was still. Fluffy looked at him, and he looked her (or he assumed it was a girl, for only females could be so bitter toward complete strangers. Also, its name was Fluffy, which sounded feminine) in the eyes this time. She writhed in outrage before launching once more at Vale, who reacted just a moment too late. Though Fluffy didn't sink her razors into his shoulder completely, she had managed to cut it fairly deeply. Vale smacked her once more - three times harder than the last ones, which would almost be hard enough to break every bone in a merperson's body - and she finally resigned herself to a corner. Vale knew they'd never be friends, but at least they had a mutual understanding and respect for each other now.

Pressing a hand over his injury, he hissed through his teeth. He would have to wrap it soon, but he wasn't leaving until he at least cleaned out Fluffy's cage first - possibly finished everything concerning Fluffy if possible. Yes, he was bleeding enough to alarm, but it looked worse than it was.

"Clean Fluffy, play with Fluffy, feed Fluffy..." Vale sniveled in a mocking impression of Kala as he worked painfully, but quickly. Oh, how he was beginning to loath that maid! He vigorously went at his task, and in a matter of probably no more than fifteen minutes (during which his bleeding all but stopped, though he would need to wrap it to keep it closed), his tasks concerning Fluffy were blessedly finished.

Still bleeding only slightly and somewhat dizzy from the blood loss, Vale returned from the cellar, locking the door with a click that was so loud, it left his ears ringing sweetly.

When Vale came back up Kala and Gefren were laughing so hard, Kala's eyes were watering and Gefren was curled over, holding his sides. Kala finally was able to breathe, "Thanks so much!" She handed him a stick, "She likes to play fetch!"

Gefren stopped and swam into the cellar, "Okay, I'm gonna be nice. Vale, if you hit her nose when she tries to attack you, she'll stop, then pet her sides. She'll stop attacking after a few times being down there!" He sighed, "Sorry, Kala told me not to say anything..."

"You know, my original self was also known for her tricks... If you believe in that stuff then it fits!" Kala smiled and swam over to Vale, "Oh come on, it was just a bit of fun!" She touched his wound and it healed, "With small wounds, I can heal them entirely, bigger things- not so much." She swam into a side room and came back out, quickly. "I need this cleaned too, it's very delicate and old, so you have to be gentle. Then take this salt stone and polish the front- gently though, please." She handed him the cleaning supplies and a stone book. It would take a while, but not forever. She smiled, "Thankyou!" She quickly swam into the top of the tower.

Gefren whistled, "Wow, I didn't know she had to clean those for every ceremony... Her guardian must have a sucky life... Hey, you should come to the ceremonies, maybe something freaky will happen! Wouldn't that be cool?"

At first, Vale was embarrassed. Had he missed some kind of joke? Then he realized that they were laughing at him, and rage took over. He said nothing, but he did yank his arm away once Kala had healed it. Lucky for her, there was no scar, or his father, King Kardon, would have a fit. Goddess or not, she had injured his son - the prince.

However, he kept his mouth shut and took the book, feeling himself on the verge of snapping. He had never agreed to this - he shouldn't be here! He wished more than anything that the King had chosen anyone else to be here, although he knew that was ludicrous. There was no one else qualified. However, he was exhausted, angry, and he hated these people. He could have gotten killed, and they merely sat up here laughing.

He had meant to go about his task in silence, but when Gefren stopped to talk to him again, he just couldn't hold back anymore.

"Wouldn't that be cool?" the young prince asked.

"Yes, Gefren, that would be lovely! Maybe something freaky would happen, then all of your people could detest me even more, and if I'm lucky, maybe I'll be able to turn invisible once before getting stabbed in the throat with a spear. That just sounds splendid. Of course I'll go. I can't think of any better way to spend my time, because I don't have to learn an entirely new language and completely foreign customs or anything. So why don't I just go, and when I'm dead all of us can be happy?"

Even as he spoke, he hoped - prayed - that Gefren would understand and not hold this against him. The boy was still young and may not have realized how much pressure was on Vale's shoulders. Not only that, but he'd just been shaken by a near-death experience planned by both Kala and Gefren themselves. The last thing he wanted to do was attend a ceremony.

He also hoped that the younger prince wouldn't desert him. Vale really never acted like this. He just needed some time to cope. He was far from home, hated by everyone around him, and now all of this god business on top of everything else. He just needed some time to think, and he'd be back to his normal self.

He just hoped that Gefren would understand, because if he didn't, then no one in this god-forsaken kingdom would...

Gefren didn't say anything, he knew Vale had just been faced with that eel, but Fluffy never would actually kill anyone or even get anyone to a close enough point... They weren't that mean to send him on a suicide mission. He was still hurt, he was still very young and heart, he swam away. He would give Vale some time to cool off and himself some time to keep from getting offensive over nothing.

Kala swam back down and took the stone book, setting it aside gently. She then grabbed one of his hands and pulled him away. She slipped them both out a back window and when she began to actually swim, she was lightning fast. "We're gonna sneak out, I know a good place..." As she swam the ribbons came from her and wrapped around him again, turning both of them invisible. Then the ribbons wrapped around his tail and split it into two, finned legs.

She didn't notice since she was swimming so fast. She finally stopped at a large seaweed field. She let go of his hand and the ribbons vanished, causing them to become visable and Vale's legs to revert back to a tail. She turned to him, not having realized anything strange had happened, "This is where I come once everyone goes away, don't worry, they never catch me here. It's so peaceful, and they have delicous plants here!" She swam into the thick seaweed and grabbed a colorful piece of plant, handing it to Vale, "Try it, I've never found anything that tasted so sweet except these! I found Fluffy here when she was a baby, she was alone and had stumbled here, from eating these her whole childhood she became twice the size of regular eels and has really sharp teeth, so I assume these things make you more powerful. Ever since I started eating them I can use my magic more and more without harming myself, and I have more control. I can also swim a lot faster. Plus, it's so peaceful, I like to nap here." She went to the bottom of the seaweed field and stretched out amongst the soft, sand floor.

As Gefren swam away, Vale felt an odd sense of satisfaction and despair. What was he doing?! He couldn't act that way toward the prince! At this rate, their countries would be warring again in no time. With a sigh, Vale continued cleaning the blasted book - gently, just as Kala had instructed. He felt his anger disintigrating bit by bit so that, by the time Kala came and removed the book from his lap, Vale had very nearly gone into a trance. His hands remained poised above where the book had been and he stared at the spot as if the stone was still there.

However, he shook his head slightly as the goddess took one of his hands. He thought he should prevent them from sneaking out - especially together - but he was simply too tired to protest. He swam along beside Kala, though it seemed much harder at one point, like something was wrong with his tail. He looked back and found himself with not one tail, but two legs!

Were he in a mood to discuss this, he might have said something, but he didn't feel a pressing urgency to work his brain any more. He accepted the food item - just realizing how hungry he was - and drifted down to the bottom to rest next to Kala. He muched on the plant in consideration. The taste was greatly pleasing, but he thought too much of such sweet things might make one sick. However, when he had finished one piece, he reached out for another and nibbled on that. He didn't care about powers and gods or goddesses at the moment. He was simply hungry and tired.

"I snapped at Gefren earlier," Vale admitted. He felt horrible about it. At first, he had been glad to see the prince go, but now he realized how unfair he'd been. He had acted childishly on impulse - something he hadn't done in a very long time. "Now everyone here detests me," he said, adding a sigh.

Kala turned on her side to face him, "He doesn't hate you, and I never hated you. The king doesn't hate you either, he's afraid and wary of you, but he doesn't hate you. Gefren is able to be mature and immature at the same time, so don't sweat it." She turned back to lying flat on her back, "I bet people will accept you more if you come to the ceremony. They all look up to me and love me, I could help you out there, I know the unspoken law and the spoken law that isn't followed."

She swam out of the seaweed and gazed up where the water ended, far from them, "This war is silly, I bet they don't have so much trouble on land... right? I've always been curious how they get around on land... Seems slow..." She smirked and then did one powerful kick, zipping off, then coming back and going away again. She dove through the seaweed and zipped around the whole field. Being cooped up in a little room all day made her almost want to explode sometimes!

Suddenly, Vale realized why, besides all the obvious reasons, it was so hard to adjust here. Back in the Kardon Kingdom, he was the most beloved citizen (besides the King himself). To go from that to being so fiercely disliked by all by a handful of people around him not only hurt, but isolated him. And so he understood why he was there. Someone from each kingdom had to not only set an example for their people, but also learn the customs so that even after this, the two merpople kingdoms might merge without hitches. A merging wouldn't take place until Vale's older brother became king, and Vale would then be a royal advisor, making the knowledge he learned here priceless.

"I suppose I should go. What happens at these ceremonies?" Vale asked, pushing off of the sandy bottom with his hands. He swam in continuous circles, doing backflips so quickly it looked as if he were a ring. Two leggeds could do the same, but it was harder because their legs moved separately, disrupting the illusion. Also, it was harder for their legs to flex in such a way. Yet, there were things two leggeds could do that those with tails couldn't. However, in most respects, they were fairly evenly matched.

Almost dizzy, but not quite, Vale broke his circle and sank back to the bottom, even more tired. He didn't know where that random bought of energy had come from, but he had felt a pressing need to release it somehow. Now he wished he would have saved it. Perhaps, before the ceremony (whatever it was), he could get a small nap.

lol, I didn't give you too much to work with either! ><

Kala stopped abruptly; a talent given more to two-leggeds. She swam down next to him and smirked, "Well... The Gistuk gem is taken from its case and everyone focuses their magical energy upon it. Depending on the Gods' wills people are killed and healed. Not immediatly of course, and the death is of already sick or douschy people. I stand next to it and try and channel it more, I can magnify it, so they let me touch it. The only downside is that, if you really are a 'god reincarnation,' you'll glow very brightly, because I do. Then again, then they couldn't try and play it off, and you'd get a lot more respect from the higher-ups and from the middle and lower classes you'd be hated more... But, it's your choice, either way people will find a way to be mad at you- you're disrespectful for not going, you're not one of us and should not be mixed with us... You really should tell the king- but it's your choice."

She looked up at the dim light, "We should be heading back..."

There were able to get back fairly quickly, and no one had even noticed they were gone. Nothing strange happened on the way back either- maybe because she wasn't touching him this time.

"You know about the mutated merpeople that live beyond that seaweed field? I saw one once, it must have been a child, because the little thing was chasing Fluffy into the field. As soon as the kid spotted me, he took off- or she, I really was too far to tell that much, and it was just a little kid... Either way, they don't look all that different really, I don't even understand why they were put out there to rott..."

"Because when they speak to the gods, the gods curse us with bad harvesting. Why were you out there, if it had been an adult, you could have been attacked..." The king didn't look angry, more concerned.

She was caught off guard by his sudden appearance, "You know I hate small spaces. If I could, I'd never come back..."

"It's dangerous for you out there... Your father made me promise to take care of you while he was away, he kept you inside, so will I. Vale, would you like to attend our ceremony? The ceremony is in a couple hours, so you'll have to get ready fairly soon. I can give you something to wear besides the pants obviously..." He grinned slightly and sat down, "Vale... It has come to my attention the severity of the whole arrangement, much clearer than before. I apologize for my rash accusations and those of my people. In so saying, you do not need to do the work of maids, it is not suited for your rank and upbringing. So I thought of a more, princely, job. Kayana- Kala, I'm sorry, has been through at least thirty guardians in the past year, so, now you get to take a crack at it. You are a very social merman amongst your people, perhaps you can teach our goddess, here, some poise. If you succeed, the people will grow to love you, and if you fail, they already think very little of you. She can teach you the language and laws as well. I understand if you rather clean eel defecation, so I'll leave it up to you. I hope to see you at the ceremony." He left quickly.

Gefren was right outside the door, listening. He swam with his father, "What are you doing? The guardians are always girls... That makes no sense!"

He smirked, "I'm not blind, Gefren, did you think I would not notice his similarities to another of our beloved gods."

"You want them to hook up? I thought she couldn't get married!" Gefren followed his father down the halls.

"I'm looking for unity of the kingdoms. If he truly is a reincarnation, then they will unify the kingdoms for good. Now, you're not allowed to go blab this to them now, as far as you know, I want to punish him with his duty- alright, Prince Gefren?" He used the title to turn the request to an order.

"Yes, Father!" Gefren said smartly and swam away from the king.

---------------

"Well... That was odd... I bet he's just trying to get people to have a better image of you, like he said. I have to get ready, so you have to go keep yourself busy!" She smirked, "Will you come to the ceremony?" She thought, "Not that I care either way- just curious..." she added quickly.

Well, babysitter had to be at least one step up from maid, right? Or that's what Vale told himself, though he still found the entire situation to be rather... precarious. But he would be willing to do just about anything to get these two-leggeds to accept him. He didn't want a war on his shoulders.

"Will you come to the ceremony?" She thought, "Not that I care either way- just curious..." she added quickly.

"It seems I have no choice, if I'm supposed to be your guardian. I suppose I will meet you there, then. Be safe, Kala," Vale said, swimming off to his own chambers. He needed to sleep before doing anything, and probably try to tame his mass of aqua hair.

Pretty good, been supa lazy though

"Be safe? What kind of request is that, I'm in a tower, what could-" She was cut off as a hand came over her mouth and muffled her. Two came around and grabbed her arms and legs so she couldn't make any sound.

"Hmm, ironic timing I suppose. You haven't been alone in so long, and with everyone at the other side for the ceremony, you're so alone!" The one holding her mouth snickered, He had one tail, but the other two holding her limbs had two legs.

"Let's get out of here!" He hit her over the head with the butt of his knife, knocking her unconcious.

--------------------

An hour later...

"Dear Goddess, you must come eat, we have your favorite for the ceremony. I hope you've been getting-" The young maid screamed, the room was in disarray, nothing was broken though. On the wall there was a note...

---------------------

Gefren grabbed Vale, "This is very bad, very very bad! Everyone will accuse you!" He swam to the main room, urgently.

The king greeted them both very seriously, "Don't worry Vale, I know it wasn't you... But... I cannot justify who did this..." He handed the note to Vale and Gefren.

"Have fun in Hell, that's all it says!?" Gefren shoved the note to Vale and swam through the crowd, "Just so it's known, Vale didn't do this, I saw him the whole time! So he couldn't have kidnapped her!"

The crowd looked more sad than angry. One woman cried out, "We have done wrong! Gods, bring her back to us!! Vien sheen trison!" She then went on her knees and cried. Soon the rest of the room was doing the same and asking the gods for help, or cursing at the cruel world, or just weeping silently.

Gefren sat next to his father, who was also very sorrowful, he did not cry, but he had a hand over his eyes as he sat in his throne. "Wait! Wait wait! Good people, rise again! This is a test of our true devotion to the gods! Our ability to accept, you all scorned him for his differences. The gods sent him here, to us, the reincarnation of Aodhán."

The crowd quieted and glared at Gefren and Vale.

"No no no! Listen, the Great Mother said they would be together in all the lives after. He was meant to come, she was meant to be taken from us, then he was meant to save her! You know the similarities are uncanny, embrace him as another god reincarnate, for he is just as important as the goddess!"

The glares ceased, and for the first time, they looked upon Vale with some willingness to accept him.

"I am young, but my father has taught me to be wise. I may think of this too much as a child, but these stories are true! The Great Mother promised Aodhán, he would find her before she died in all the next lives. Now, all of you know the humans above us have fought more and more aggressivly, this is no longer a fight between our two great, intelligent, merciful kingdoms, it is now a fight between the heavens, the sea, the land, and the dark pits of the underworld. She came to us because we needed her wisdom again, and he has come to us to save her from the death that will always haunt her! You know it is true, if we do not stand together now, and believe in the last of our ancestry and magic of the world, we will fall." He then dropped the princely tone, "Let's go for it!"

There was a moment where no one moved except to look at one another. Confusion filled the air as the people thought to try and piece together their conclusions. All we now standing, their feet barely above the ground as they kept twisting to look at what everyone else was doing. Gefren swam to Vale and smiled half unsure, half hopeful.

Then two young girls came forward, "Please bring the goddess back..." They then looked back at the crowd, hoping they had done right.

The crowd was still silent, then, as one, they all pleaded to him, "Vien sheen trison! Vien sheen trison! Vien sheen trison! Vien sheen trison!"

Gefren smirked, "See, this is perfect, now everyone will love you! But- you're good at navigation and stuff right? I mean, I'd look pretty stupid if you couldn't find her... Vien sheen trison, Vale? Vien sheen trison, means- loosely- we need a savior, be our savior, loosely, very loosely..." The crowd looked upon Vale, hope in their reddened faces. The king even smiled slightly.

Could the day have gotten any worse?

They already hated him. They already distrusted him. They already accused him. Could anything have changed their minds, at this point? Vale was sure that, if he were anyone else, this wouldn't have been so damn hard. He was sure that, had he not had a purple and golden tail, or if he had not been adopted into princehood, he could have avoided this situation entirely.

Surely the gods would not be so cruel.

Yet, they were. And not only was Kala stolen only moments after King Leon appointed him as her guardian, but now he was going to be forced to retrieve her, and he had no clues, as far as he was concerned. He had a crumpled note in his hand that read: "Have fun in Hell." He knew where, roughly, Kala had been abducted. He could think of endless people who would take her, as well as endless people who would rather die than see their goddess taken.

But these people - these people who minutes before had rejected him and despised him for reasons out of his control - were now looking up at him with hope, begging for him to be their savior. He didn't want to. If he thought he could refuse and continue living, he would have declined. However, he knew that he didn't have an option, no matter what. So he squared his shoulders and nodded gravely, accepting the task. He didn't know how he would do it, but if he wanted to leave this kingdom alive, gods knew he would have to try.

After he had done so, he didn't stick around. He signalled to Gefren (which, as for his question: of course Vale knew how to navigate! He was a messenger, for crying out loud!) to follow him back to the room he was using while he stayed there. Vale sat on the edge of the magnificent bed, his tail flicking absentmindedly as he thought. He held the note in his hands, staring at it intensely. What good was an education in all of the things he'd been taught if he couldn't use it when it mattered.

Then, suddenly, it dawned on him. "Gefren, the lines in this paper reveal that the kelp it was made from is pearl kelp, which only grows very far south of this kingdom. The only people who know how to cultivate and press this into paper are a community of outcasts, which is why it is not only rare, but incredibly expensive to obtain." He hoped these weren't the same outcasts that Kala was referring to earlier. "I don't know why outcasts would take Kala, but it's the only lead we have.

"I need you to fetch me a bow and arrows, and quickly. As far as we know, she could have been captured by two-leggeds, which would be good. No offense, but I can swim a lot faster than two leggeds, and I might be able to catch up."

Vale wondered what he would do once he got to the community of outcasts - a compilation of criminals, diseased, and merpeople having such oddities that society felt compelled to turn them out. Of course, the practice of banishing those people had stopped many years ago - generations before Vale had been born. However, the community had continued to remain aloof, functioning as an indepndent entity. Vale had been there several times to offer alliances to the people, but they refused to associate with anyone but themselves. Also, Vale had accompanied a trading band of merchants once to collect an order of pearl paper (as it was called) for his father.

However, he would do nothing without at least a bow and plenty of arrows. And, if he was lucky, he could have a knife or two, which were helpful for tracking. So saying, Vale impatiently awaited Gefren's return.

Here is the long-awaited post. Hope it satifies, because it will probably be a while until my next one, just to forewarn you...

"Lucky for you, I'm good at tracking! Sadly, the only tracking clue is this slightly out-of-place couch cushion. She was lifted strait up, that and the paper is all we can go off of... I can't imagine those outcasts taking her though... Maybe it is one of the other marine, humanoid creatures. A very small group of cammys live near here, and sirens are fairly close too, as well as a few other sorts of merpeople besides the outcasts..." Gefren seemed so troubled over the fact that it could be the outcasts, it was strange...

"We will go it alone so we attract no attention. I'll go get us some rides, can you ride a Great White? They are the only shark large enough to carry things, and if we ride a whale, it'll take forever! They're not all that hard, but we have very young ones so they're nice and fast." Gefren swam around the room, nervous.

Vale didn't notice how troubled Gefren seemed over the fact that the outcasts could have been the ones to kidnap Kala. "Well, it could have been one of the others, for all we know. But all we know for sure is that our only lead takes us to the outcasts. From there, we can figure out where the last order of pearl paper went to, because this paper is very fresh." Often times, people wrote on kelp if they didn't want their messages readable for long (or simply didn't care how long it lasted), for it broke down and fell apart easily, no matter how well bound. If one wanted a message preserved, they carved it from stone.

He didn't love her, but she was - in an odd, twisted sort of way - a friend, a piece of his past, and a piece of his future. He tucked the paper back into his bag so that he could help Gefren if possible.
