((Woot elegan pig latin! ;P))

Leo's ears perked and he started frantically digging around crumbled structures- looking for something. Then he growled as he pulled out a slightly-frozen bear leg. "Someone else has been here- fairly recently. This thing was hunted and mostly eaten, saved for later only a few days ago here... Some rogue probably, I would say it moved on but you don't save food unless you intend to come back..." He looked at Snow, "You sure we are alone?"

She sighed, "Well the mountain is huge, anything is possible. Just put it back, there are four of us, we will be fine, this place has good shelter. It makes sense."

Leo did as he was told, burying the bear meat back into the snow. He looked at Eirian, shrugging an apology; maybe he really had seen something. He walked up to the door, putting his front paws on the door and leaning against it. The wind picked up ten fold and he put his paws back down, whimpering quietly. "This place is so damn creepy..."

Snow and Leo began digging out bodies to lay them to rest. They might as well since Eirian was busy decoding.

Something was staring at Eirian again, but as soon as it was spotted it ran into one of the ruined homes that was still fairly usable. It was so far away he wouldn't be able to see more than the fact it was a white blob against white snow, one eye popping back out the side then disappearing again inside the rubble.

The wolves didn't notice, but it was fairly far away, much closer to Eirian and down-wind, so it was only logical they wouldn't be able to smell it, especially when they were already focused on carefully digging out the dead so they could have a better burial.

Although Eirian soaked up the knowledge he deciphered as quickly as his mind could unravel it, there was much to be decoded. That, and every word needed deciphered separately. Despite the advanced achievements of this particular group of peoples, and despite having a seemingly standard alphabet, everything seemed to be spelled by sound. Or, rather, how one might pronounce it. So Eirian kept finding the same words spelled numerous ways. On top of that, the people here most likely spoke with an accent, which made it yet more difficult.

Progress was slow-going, at best.

If Eirian had a proper parchment and quill, and perhaps a volunteer assistant or two, well, then that might be a different story. As it was, the work was almost exhausting, even for Eirian. The journal that he translated after Lazriel obviously dated to a later period, when the language had become more formal and more stable.

After a few minutes of intense focus, Eirian deemed that he'd earned himself a break. He stood from his crouch, looking at the runes scrawled in the dirt. After reading them a few times, he believed that he had them memorized.

A strange tingle cause the hair of his hackle to rise, the sensation of someone watching him.

He turned to catch what he thought was the thing he'd seen earlier at the stream.

Was it following them? He should tell Snow. But then, whenever the wolves were around, it seemed to flee. Did it fear wolves? Why? Was it Leo, because he was a demon blood? Snow? She'd not been kind to demon-bloods before she met Luna, the stories told. Did it want to speak with him? Why? He was very obviously a pure-blooded leopard -- any idiot in the mountains could easily ascertain that -- but the question was, if so, why? And did it mean him harm?

It was hard to be sure. But if Eirian wanted to find out, he would have to do so alone. Snow and Leo obviously frightened the thing, and Eirian knew that information was nearly impossible to garner from frightened specimens.

So he'd have to do some stealthy reconnaissance on his own. Fine. He could do that. Talia and Leo did it all the time. Why couldn't he?

He wished that he could sense danger specifically, but he could not. He could sense presence, and naught more. Useful for this, but not to the utmost.

Before changing and leaving to follow the creature, whatever it might be (though the fact that it was purely white unnerved him -- a sign of demon blood, it was), he scratched an arrow into the dirt, in the direction he'd gone. It would be enough. It Leo and Snow knew to check downwind, then they could sniff him out. Though he didn't know how long it would be before they thought to check on him. He was known to stay preoccupied for long periods of time, and they probably wouldn't think to look for him for a while.

The thought made him crouch a bit, terrified all the more of what he might find. But, as before, he would be ready.

He moved slowly, which would not only allow him to make less noise, but also to blend much more thoroughly with his surroundings. His eyes kept scanning the hut -- for lack of a better term -- and the area surrounding it. He would hate for the thing to leave and end up trapping him by sneaking up behind. However, it was so difficult to see from a distance (even with the thrice blasted fog cleared), that he likely wouldn't see it, even if it did leave.

Although he was no brave soldier (like Leo, Talia, or Aplin, maybe even Kale), Eirian could be very compelled when it came to slaking his curiosity. It could grow to the point where he physically ached simply to know, and he knew that, if he didn't find out now, he would discover himself sneaking up this mountain later (probably at night) to find out, which would be even more dangerous. Now would be better. Much better indeed.

When he got within ten yards of the hut, he went no farther, simply slunk around the outside, taking stock of the place, trying to find potential exits. Whatever was in there seemed frightened, and frightened things (as Eirian himself had demonstrated earlier at the stream) became much more fierce.

"Hello?" he called softly, his smooth purr of a leopard voice -- so much like Lazriel's -- soothing to the suspicious ear. A sudden thought struck him, and he warily repeated the greeting in the old language. He was unsure what to expect. After all, whatever it was, it was powerful enough to take down a bear, apparently.

And, Eirian hadn't even thought, what if it wasn't alone?

((I sort assumed that this was what you wanted.

And I like playing Eirian SO MUCH MORE than Talia. I might have to do a main character switch.))

A white eye poked out from the side of the hut. It looked around, then back at Eirian, revealing its leopard head, flashing a set of huge fangs. It may have been a leopard, but its mouth was massive in comparison to a normal leopard, housing huge fangs. Its canines were so long they stuck out of its mouth even when closed. One paw stepped out of the hut, much larger than a normal leopard. It sniffed the snow, cautiously, "...W-What are you...?" She stepped out, she was also longer than a regular snow leopard and instead of black spots her's were barely-visible light gray. Her fur was longer, but she was very slender, maybe even a little too slender. Her long fur was matted in some areas and she had patches of dirt and dried blood in her fur.

Her back right leg was badly injured- that bear fight had not left her unscathed. It was badly infected and she wouldn't put any weight on it. She curled it close to her stomach, wincing. "You... You look like me..." She spoke fast and quietly and she had a thick accent, speaking in the old language.

She was curious about him, but she did not look welcoming in the least. She didn't want him near her, she stayed low to the ground and ready for attack. She kept her hurt leg tucked close to her and watched for others very carefully. She would run if provoked, regardless of her injured leg. Her muscles spoke of her maneuverability for quick mountain-transportation,

((Oooh. Interesting.))

At first, all Eirian could do was stare. Was this a new species? No. No, his mind said, not new, but old, ancient perhaps.

Maybe... maybe even one of the lost shaman tribe.

For a moment, his excitement overshadowed his fear, but his senses soon caught up. Eirian was small even by average standards (small, but long, like his father). This very similar version of a snow leopard was larger than average. Meaning it could very easily tear him to shreds. Looking at those fangs, Eirian determined that that would be a very unpleasant death, indeed.

When it -- she, by the voice -- spoke, it took Eirian a long moment to process the language. To read it was one thing, to hear it was another entirely, especially when it was so skewed and accented. His ears twitched and his eyebrows pulled together as he translated mentally.

What was he? Well, there were plenty of ways to answer that, weren't there? The question really was, how should he answer it?

"I am a friend," he responded, and forced his legs, against his instinct, to rise from his poised crouch, flicking his eyes to the ground and keeping his ears flat -- all signs of submission. He had no intention of fighting, knowing he could not win, and he wished to express it. "My name is Eirian," he said. "Light." His name was purely leopard, and so based in the language they spoke. She would know that, certainly, but perhaps it would help make him less of a threat. Leopards put great stock into names. He didn't know how far back such beliefs stretched, but it was worth hoping that it was a help.

She raised her head slightly, seeing his submission, but she was still cautious. "Light? You speak a different language... You are a male..." She was curious, now, she had never seen a male. Her mother had said they were a bit bigger than females though, yet she was larger than this one. Yet, she noticed all the differences, his bright black spots, smaller teeth... Maybe she was the strange one here? From a distance she had seen many like that, but none ever came to this mountain, only the large, howling foxes sometimes, and she couldn't understand them at all... She could recognize the similarities with this... this thing... and herself.

"A friend?" She was talking clearer now, and slower, recognizing his struggling to understand her fluency. "You don't understand me. What are you, not to me, we look very similar. What type of thing are you? My mother told me I was the last... Yet you look like me..." She cautiously stepped out of the hut, her claws digging into the snow as she got within striking distance.

She watched him very carefully before sticking her neck out and sniffing his shoulder. She had only ever known her own smell and that of her mother. This one... He smelled like... She didn't even know, but he differed greatly from her smell of dirt and blood. He was a bit younger than her. He had the smell of other things all over him, whatever he was, he came from denser populations.

She slowly moved along his side, taking in the smell. It was interesting and so different. Her tail flickered back and forth in little 'S's across the snow, its long fur working as a brush and combing the snow. She continued to watch him, but her muscles relaxed and she stood at her normal and comfortable height, she was a bit taller than this male too, her longer limbs giving her a bit of height on him. She looked back, flicking her tail around to examine it and compare.

She retracted her claws and her ears came forward now that she was no longer frightened. This... 'Light' seemed to be of no ill intention to her, so she was not wary of a sudden attack. She gently touched the tip of his tail with her paw. His fur was soft and well cared for, but shorter. Maybe he went to hotter areas sometimes? She lived in these mountains, the air got so freezing here she would die without her thick coat.

She finally turned and backed away, looking at him calmly, "Light... Why are you here? You aren't native... You will freeze or starve... You should go home..." She was relaxed, now she was just curious as to what anything would want here? Especially something like him who was obviously not suited to a place like this... Not this high up anyway, with the frequent blizzards and constantly-changing mountain sides...

He stiffened, his breath catching, when she approached him. He could not help how his muscles tensed, or his eyes widened somewhat. When she touched his tail, especially, he could not help the way that it twitched and jerked away.

Still, he remained calm. "I am a snow leopard. A shifter." Eirian would shift to show her his other form, but he didn't know if she was familiar with shifters or not. If she'd never even seen another snow leopard, she'd likely never seen a shifter. He did not wish to startle her, even less so in his human form, which would be much more vulnerable to attack.

Nor did he want to mention that he had come, with others, to intrude upon what may have been sacred to her, or possibly her home. So he changed the subject. "Are you native to this place?" She had called him, in a way, a foreigner, which would mean that she herself was not.

His heart sped in his chest. If he was right...

Eirian couldn't even imagine the possibilities.

She nodded, "Yes, I was born here. Of course, it has been this way for as long as I can remember and my mother died when I was very young. I've lived up here by myself for a long time..." She looked down at the ground, thinking, "A snow leopard? Maybe that was what my father was... I can change too, that is what you mean, right? A shifter? Of course, I can't in my current state, I would tear open my closed wound on my leg. Anyway, there would be no point to up here... No fur or claws... What a useless ability... You seem to be a good creature, perhaps-" A loud bark cut her off.

"Eirian!" Leo barked in the distance, "Hey where did you go?"

She stiffened and bolted to the side of the mountain, effortlessly bounding up the mountain side and disappearing behind the mountain. She ran as though she was using all four legs and the steep mountain had not phased her in the least. She had gone so fast, by the time Leo got within smelling or seeing distance, she was long gone.

Leo barked playfully, "Hey! Why did you go wandering off back here, it's just a bunch of rubble... Snow said the mountain is really treacherous around here, she was worried you might have gotten hurt if you started climbing around over here so I came to check on you." His brow furrowed, "You smell funny, have you been digging around here?" He sniffed the ground in front of Eirian and the hut, snorting, "What a weird smell- ooh maybe it was a deer! More deer to eat~" He drooled before turning to head back, "... Are you done here? If you're not I can try to help even if I can't read this stuff!"

((I'm very, very tired. But I'm going to try to do this. Will probably be short though. Sorry.))

Before he could possibly convince her to stay, let alone to disclose any kind of useful information, the... well, the whatever-she-was -- a creature now little more than a historical myth -- was well out of sight.

Eirian was too excited, though, to be frustrated. If it was that girl he'd seen at the stream, then she knew how to find him, and if she had begun to trust him and was as curious about his origins as he was about hers, then, well, it seemed reasonable to assume that she would seek him out once more.

"No, I didn't finish. I just needed a break, is all."

When Eirian went back to his work, it was with much improved enthusiasm, but no less focus. The work became significantly more enjoyable, and Eirian was able to solve the old runes much more quickly than previously.

Before he'd completed translating, though, he called Snow over. "So what, exactly, will happen if I chant this correctly? Or incorrectly, for that matter?" Just to be sure. One could never be too careful.

Leo lingered behind for a while, sniffing curiously, but then lost interest and went back to the others.

Snow walked to Eirian, "You say it right the doors open and we go in, you say it wrong and they don't. I didn't think the words were booby-trapped, really! It's just a passphrase for opening these doors, I doubt anything bad will happen..." She went to the door, gently digging away the snow covering the bottom with Leo.

Fi had migrated to Eirian's back now, and she spoke softly to him, "You've been acting strange since you came back. What was it that you found? Leo said he smelled something funny around you, but he didn't recognize it, it was something new. This place isn't safe, foxes that come up here at night don't come back... I wont say anything, but don't be stupid. You are here for the door, anything else is the business of the mountain..." With that she was silent, curling up on his back and closing her eyes to rest.

Snow howled quietly and Leo tried to mimic her with minimal success. They continued this for a while before Snow gave up; Leo just wasn't matured yet, his vocal cords weren't out of practice they just weren't ready to howl. So they sat and talked instead, leaving the scholar to do his work.

Eirian felt in Fi's warning an echo of their father's reasoning. Lazriel had, in his lifetime, seen more than most people ever saw. His life had been a constant defying of rules and exploring unknown territories, not just physically, either, but socially, mentally. Eirian knew of the horrible things that had happened to his father (not in great detail, but he'd heard - it was hard to keep such things secret when Lazriel was the king), and he feared facing those sorts of things himself. At the same time, everyone looked up Lazriel, saw him as brave, wise, kind (though he certainly had his weaker points). Eirian wanted more than anything to prove himself the son of the great king, a true pure blood.

And, certainly, he had the blood. He could feel it growing hotter as he began to realize what he had discovered. Yet, the rational part of him -- the more dominant side, in most cases -- told him to listen to Fi.

"You're right, of course," he said.

He would think about it later. For now, there was nothing that he could but concentrate on the mission.

"Okay. I think I've got it."

From what he could tell, what they would find would hopefully be nothing more than a lot of dust. But, it seemed as if the door had been sealed for a very good reason. Snow wouldn't bring us up here if it was dangerous, he thought to himself. Which was true. If anything happened to them out here, not even Lazriel would forgive her.

"Ready?"

He waited for Snow's go-ahead, and then stood back, away from the pillars and, more importantly, away from the door. If it was sealed by magic that hadn't faded after this long, then there was a good chance that it was still powerful.

He closed his eyes then, for a moment, and drew a deep breath. When he reopened them, he began chanting in a tongue that sounded very familiar to modern snow leopard speech, but more garbled, like gibberish, and slower. In general, snow leopards spoke less quickly than wolves, but the old snow leopard speech was especially delayed.

As he chanted, he felt something grow inside him, something that burned like fire and felt like snakes wiggling just under his skin. Something that felt like pure energy, and something that he couldn't contain. It welled up inside him, flowed out with his breath, filled him until it felt like he was being pressed out of his own body. He tried to stop chanting, tried to stop the surge of whatever it was in him, but he couldn't. He was speaking faster than he even he could comprehend, each word growing in volume and strength, speaking words he didn't even know.

And then, suddenly, it stopped, and he felt every muscle in his body go completely limp, and something far more devastating than exhaustion swept over him. Eirian's mind furiously tried to catch up, to figure out what he said, what he had done, if he'd done something wrong, what might have happened. He struggled to draw breath, as if he had just sprinted like he had earlier to beat Snow. His entire body shook.

"What... What just happened?"

Leo stood beside Eirian as he began chanting. Snow and Fi stood aside from the both of them, looking at the door.

As Eirian chanted the bright lock on the door began to crack, a bloody pawprint -Leo's- burned into the crystalline material. The door began to shake, as did the mountain and Snow and Fi turned to look at the escalating intensity from Eirian's chanting.

Snow barked, "Eirian, you should calm down..."

Leo was fixated on the door, he moved closer as the chanting began to drown out everything. The lock shattered and the doors burst open, unleashing a blinding light. As it dimmed the door stood, wide open, blood smeared on every visible surface within. It smelled of death and just... old.

Snow and Fi both went to Eirian. Snow sniffed him, "I don't understand what happened... Are you alright?" She licked his forehead, a very motherly gesture for wolves, and she had only done such a gesture a handful of times and mostly to Leo when he was young and got himself into trouble often. She then sniffed him, examining him for injury, "You were chanting so fast... It was like you were possessed by something..."

Fi snorted, "It seems the magic on this mountain is still very much alive..."

Leo stood at the entrance, peering in, and whimpering. His tail was tucked between his legs.

Snow looked back at him, gesturing for him to come away from the door, flippantly, then returning her attention to Eirian.

Instead Leo perked up and barked playfully, his ears forward and his tail wagging excitedly. A voice speaking in at a near-mute volume whispered out of the cave in the ancient tongue, a little light flickered in the cave and Leo dashed after it.

Snow instantly turned, "Leo!" She dashed after him, but upon touching the threshold of the cave her whole body was electrocuted and she was expelled from the cave. Fi growled, looking at Snow just to check was okay before dashing into the cave, running after Leo.

Snow looked at Eirian, "Fi will bring Leo back, stay here while we figure things out.." She coughed, her fur was frayed from the force of the electrocution, she was just lying in the snow, seemingly unable to do anything else and fighting to stay conscious, but she lost and fell into a peaceful sleep as her body re-cooperated.

((I know you're going to be so angry... But I'll probably have to stop this halfway through.))

Eirian hadn't even known the extent of Leo's stupidity, running into a blood-spattered cave that smelled of devastation and destruction with a happy yip. This wasn't just one of his little exploring trips! He could get himself seriously injured, or worse!

Yet, after what Eirian himself had just experienced, how could he think such things? Just as Snow had said, it seemed as if something had possessed him, and why couldn't the same have happened to Leo?

Pure blood does strange things. Eirian meant it in relation to wolves, but in these mountains, old magic and lore still lived strongly. Being of such a scientific disposition, he wouldn't have believed such things if he hadn't been raised in the family that he had.

Desperately wanting to follow Fi and Leo (though he didn't dare leave Snow vulnerable here), Eirian slowly straightened, having regained his breath. He took a few shaky steps toward Snow, and then lay beside her. If he could have, he would have moved her to a more secure location, but Eirian wasn't the strongest of them in the best of circumstances, and his body was still reeling from the effects of whatever it was he had done.

He laid his longer body beside Snows, draping one large paw over her. His ears twitched attentively as his eyes dutifully scanned the area. Though he was very near panicked about Leo, there wasn't anything he could do about it now. He had to trust that Fi would bring him back, though Eirian struggled to calm himself with only that to assure Leo's safety. Sure, they may not have had much (if anything) in common, but they were brothers, and Eirian would never wish harm on his brother.

While he waited, Eirian diverted his thoughts by trying to figure out what he had actually done. He had so completely trusted in Snow's judgment, that he hadn't even considered why the doors might have been sealed. Not really. But then, why were doors ever sealed? To keep secrets. To keep people safe. To guard. To protect.

Had Eirian really been so naive as to think that whatever had been so painstakingly sealed -- and kept sealed for so long -- would be harmless?

No. No, he hadn't. And because of his idiocy, Leo... and Snow...

Well, if it had been his stupidity that had opened that door, then he would have to do something to close it again. Just as soon as he got Leo out.

After a few minutes, Snow raised her head, slowly. She stood, though her body screamed for rest. "If either of you are harmed, I will never be able to forgive myself. I will find a way to fix this..." She coughed, whimpering slightly, "But I am very sorry for this, I should have let things be, but I wanted to know so badly. When I was young my father told me great stories of the peoples here and of their secrets. I'm far from perfect, I can say I wanted to know for the sake of science and knowledge, but there are still some things I am still in search of and I thought I might find answers here..." She laid down again, "Eirian, I have put you in much danger, I am very sorry. I will fix this though... I promise..."

She quickly jumped to her feet, although her muscles quivered for her to rest. She stopped as Fi bounded back out of the cave, blood on her white fur. She jumped onto Snow's back, quivering. The cave seemed to growl and darken.

"Fi! The blood... isn't your's? Well that's good, but..."

"It's not Leo's either... I couldn't find him, I couldn't see anything, all I could hear was growling... I have no idea where he could have gone, I can't smell anything in there past the death... You should rest someplace warmer..." She turned into a human. She had strawberry hair that went to the small of her back in gentle waves, a small chest and too slender. She was tall, but seemed to be stretched too thin.

She helped Snow walk into some of the sheltered rubble, "We will figure out something, find something for us to eat if you can..."

Snow collapsed once inside a better area of the rubble. She looked worried, snorting as she thought, but Fi just reassured her Leo would be fine.

The leopardess returned once Eirian was alone again, seemingly more relaxed as she stood a ways from him. It took her a couple minutes to make her way to him, this time staying a good ten feet from him. "Do you hear it? I think we should close this before it gets dark and those birds gather..." She walked to one of the doors, pushing it as hard as she could, but it didn't budge an inch. Magic or not, the doors were physically too heavy to move without some major manpower.

She grunted and peered inside again, jumping away skiddishly, "You are not afraid? Do you not hear it from the cave? I don't like this place..." She moved farther from the door, her injured leg barely slowing her pace and movements in the least.

((Super lame. Forgive me.))

Eirian, somewhat dazed and absorbed in his thoughts, was somewhat startled by the leopardess's approach. It didn't show, though. He did not try to keep her from closing the doors, but nor did he try or offer to assist her. He couldn't think of closing the doors until Leo was out.

"Do you know anything about what's in there?"

He needed to know so that he could form a strategy, some kind of plan. If Fi couldn't find Leo by just charging in, then Eirian didn't expect to do any better.

"If you know, please tell me. I can't leave my brother in there." Even with the growls emanating from the cave, sending shivers down his spine, his duty (and, of course, his love for his sibling) steadied his voice and kept him from quaking with fear. He couldn't keep his ears from flattening threateningly, put on edge as he was, but he did not mewl like the terrified kitten he felt like.

Think of Da. What would he do?

As he waited for a response, he crouched next to another pillar, beginning to translate (by now, he could practically just read it straight from the carved rock). He needed more information.

It's a good thing that Talia isn't here. She would have charged in there right after him. And if I ever got her back, she would never forgive me.

In fact, if Talia ever even found out about this, she likely wouldn't forgive him. Sure, she loved Eirian, but Leo was the sibling she connected best with, just as Eirian connected well with Miya and Aplin.

She circled the front of the cave, looking agitated. "Death is inside... It is evil within, but I... I have wanted to go inside for a long time. We can go in together, but I will need to heal this wound, first. I can't do it on my own," She looked at him warily before sitting close to him, stretching out her wounded leg, wincing.

It was badly infected and healing incorrectly. She looked directly at Eirian, "You are a pureblood leopard, the same shifter I am undoubtedly mixed with. The goddess blessed your royal line with healing, a couple droplets of your blood on my wound and some of your saliva it should heal it instantly. My kind is hard to kill, this wound looks bad but it would heal on its own. However, by that time your brother will be dead... or worse... Heal me and I'll help you any way I can, but I warn you, my knowledge is very limited by my mother and my people's untimely deaths. Most of their knowledge is now lost, even to me."

She held out her paw to him, shifting it into a white, dainty hand. She had long fingers and sharp, pointed nails. This was a deal, a real promise she would make to him on leopard pride alone. But in the end, it was Eirian's decision, he had no reason to believe her, only instinctual trust and the leopardess hoped he would trust her.
