Although Azaan planned on answering Leeria's questions, it was not his top priority. Just as Themba did, Zaan immediately began eating, despite the fact that his chest was still heaving. Although Leeria could probably fend off other predators that might steal their kill, she was every bit as skittish as a cheetah cub. Not that Aza blamed her. As the tourists rolled to a stop, Aza flattened his ears (they made so much noise) but didn't retreat. He found Leeria's desertion humorous (though, again, he didn't blame her). At least, with the humans around, other predators would be wary to approach, giving Zaan and Themba more time to eat. "These humans make such a fuss whenever you're around." Zaan scoffed, then stood. "Let's go. We'll come back for Leeria once the people have left." "Should we follow them? Wasn't she looking for a human place?" "Well, we can't leave her there." Zaan looked quizzically toward the tree where the odd cat hid, then back at his brother. "Why don't you go? I'll help catch something for Leeria." "It was your idea. Besides, I stick out more." Themba thought it through for a moment before sighing. "Fine." Eventually, the small pack of humans moved on, and after they'd gone a ways, Themba trotted to catch up. At the crest of a hill, he turned back and shouted, "I expect dinner for this tomorrow!" before turning and disappearing in the direction the people had gone. Zaan smiled, turning back to the tree. "It's not much, but if you come down, you could have what's left." ((That was a fail. But I have no motivation. Sorry. I'm burnt out today.))

Leeria watched the humans more out of boredom as she waited for them to leave. She then jumped down and trotted to the remnants, "So scraggly... I want to go hunt zebra! Ugh, if only he was here..." Her escort was wonderful at catching prey, she was sure he could take down one of those zebra. For now, beggars couldn't be choosers, and she had to take food as it came... She scarfed down what was left of the tiny beast before carefully cleaning her face and paws. She looked up to see another cat approaching. She flattened her ears and sniffed- it was male, whatever it was. As it came closer she could see and smell it better. This was that one-color cat that lived in packs like dogs. It was weird that it was just one, but he looked young, probably a year or two away from his family... He didn't have all the fluff like the older males of his kind. He stopped a little ways back, sniffing, then stepped a little closer, sniffing again before continuing his languid trot. He stopped just behind the tree Leeria had hid in, "I'm too late for the buffet... I'm hungry, too!" He looked at the two of them, "What kind of pair are you? A weird cheetah and a... um... weird!" The lion paced, then growled, "You may be big for your kind, but the female is still bigger than you- how does that make you feel cat-rat, hmm?" Leeria was confused- a... cat-rat? It didn't sound nice, especially by the lion's tone, "Back off, go hunt somewhere else, there's not even enough for the scavengers- including you..." He growled, "Shut your mouth, I'm having some fun, it's not often you can get within sight of an African rat without it running off! Using the female as a shield, hmm? I just came to investigate, you better be careful, Rat, she's leaving funny smells everywhere. You're attracting a crowd of attention... How about a formal introduction, m'lady, my name is Apio, a year from my pride. You seem ill-suited for the terrain, perhaps a larger companion would suit you- cheetahs don't catch anything but those hooved rodents. Barely a bite for a real cat..." He snorted at Azaan. What was a pride? She supposed it didn't matter, "On your way then, go find your own kind. Your curiosity is wasted, I am not going to share with the likes of you. My friend has offered me far more kindness than anyone else here..." He wrinkled his nose, "Cats eat rats- all cheetahs are good for is getting a free meal from... He wont protect you, if I came closer he would run, just like a rat should from its predator!" He snapped his jaws in Azaan's direction, shaking his butt as if he was about to pounce (though they were too far apart for Azaan to be in danger). Leeria growled, loudly, before running towards him about a fourth of the distance, causing him to jump back. She snorted, "Cats do chase rats- go back to where you came from before I make you my next meal!" Apio growled, his ears back, then stood, dignified, and gave a smug look at Azaan before skulking back over the hill and leaving them. Leeria went back to Azaan's side, looking quite pleased with herself, "I've never fought another cat, I'm glad he ran away!" She growled a laugh, then looked at Azaan seriously, "Why did he call you a rat? I thought all cats got along, generally. I don't understand why running makes you a rat- I run, too. I don't want to fight either..." ((totally random, I just wanted some outside-cheetahs interactions xD)) Edited by Cookie Dough, May 5 2011, 05:34 PM.

((It was interesting - I liked it!)) Zaan could smell the lion approaching, and it made his hair stand on end. He may be large for his kind, but he was no match for a lion. Not in this form, anyway. He was used to taking verbal abuse from other species, but that didn't mean that he took it lightly. He snarled, but did no more, knowing that if Apio did advance, he would have to run. Still, that didn't mean he had to look like a frightened kitten. He hissed angrily. "Say that to me man-to-man," Azaan said, knowing that, as men, Apio would think twice about saying such things to him. Aza may not have had a large physique when compared to a lion, but as a man, he was only slightly more slender than any other species. Still, Leeria ran Apio off with no help from Azaan. He glanced away, ashamed. "We are considered the cowards of the savanna. Cheetahs' biggest advantage is speed - if we get injured, we die. It's as simple as that. So we hunt small prey - gazelle, mostly, and sometimes smaller things - to avoid injury. When we are threatened, even when feeding, we simply leave. The food isn't worth a potential injury." In a last-ditch effort to save some of his dignity, he added, "But they don't tease us so much in our human forms. They hide behind their brawn because they have no brains." He growled for effect. He snorted, and then turned back to Leeria. "Themba is following the humans to their settlement so you can begin your search there. For now, we can try hunting zebra if you wish." Aza would rather not, but he could herd it for Leeria and give her pointers. |

Leeria's ears fell; a sad fate to be verbally abused and be able to do nothing about it. All the food and children they must have lost to other creatures. She snorted, "Well, I'm big here, and I'm normal size back home for a female, but I am surprisingly weak for my kind. Siberian tigers can wrestle large rams up a mountain and win, but my strength lacks a little. I was born strangely, like you, I am the only one like this. If I am successful in retrieving my companion, you will see; we look quite different..." She stood, sniffing the ground, "I always run too, I cannot afford injury..." It didn't take long to find zebra; Leeria ran at them, but they huddled and moved away- it made her dizzy trying to separate all the stripes in the heat of the moment. However, with Azaan's pointers and some creative herding, she was able to get on one. Her sharp claws and teeth fastened her to its back as it struggled, but only briefly, then collapsed. Leeria growled, angrily, at the dumb thing for falling on her. She slipped from underneath it before ripping into the tender belly. It tasted just like food from the mountains- hooved animals always tasted the same, she supposed. When Azaan approached, she growled at first, sinking her teeth into it and glaring at him, but her hardened gaze quickly softened and she let it go, apologizing promptly, "You... you surprised me... Force of habit, I apologize..." She moved to its haunches and lower belly region, offering the upper half for Azaan. Tigers weren't used to sharing food, ever, actually. After she was comfortably full she stretched and cleaned, then watched the bravest birds fly down to eat the remnants. "Lead the way, Azaan, I cannot track your brother so easily, he doesn't smell as strongly as you!" If she were human she would have chuckled, instead it came out as low growling pants. "Perhaps you can give me an animal lesson as we go. You are cheetahs, we killed a zebra, but you kill gazelle- those little things. What else is out here? Those big orange and tan horses with the long necks, then the two different large grey things, and those scaled things everywhere- some are as big as me, and they wait in the water for prey, then there are little ones and then legless ones that climb in trees. It is quite strange, actually... I suppose Africa is large, I might as well get to know it since I will be visiting for quite some time!" ((uggughughguhg super lame, soz, and I hope you didn't mind the blerb of god-modding there xD)) |

((No, it's okay. I'm glad you went ahead.)) Azaan did not blame Leeria for her reaction: most predators didn't like to share their prey. Zaan certainly didn't, but he couldn't fight for his. So he approached warily and did not advance until she allowed him to do so. When she moved over, he purred appreciatively. The zebra didn't taste much different than a gazelle, though the meat was slightly less lean. He didn't dislike it. When they continued on their way, Azaan having taken little from the zebra overall (he had already eaten just beforehand), he began leading the way back to where he and Themba had parted. He snorted indignantly at the comment concerning his smell, but did not deign to comment. Instead, with enthusiasm, he began to describe the savanna to Leeria, as well as the creatures within it, their habits, their lifestyles, and their respective cultures, as well as he knew them. He explained to her the giraffe, the the elepants, the hippos, the crocodiles, and every other creature he could think to name. Azaan, like most cheetahs, was observant. He noticed the small things and always paid attention, even when it would seem unimportant to any other specie. "They've gone much farther than I expected," Aza commented after what seemed like much too long following his brother's scant traces, his voice threaded with concern. Zaan lifted his head and made an odd chirping noise, calling for his brother. He got no response. "Let's keep moving," he said. He doubted that Themba was injured - he was capable of taking care of himself, as was Azaan (though they worked best as a pair) - but he didn't like being separated from his twin with no idea of his whereabouts. He also didn't like to think about Themba being too close to the humans. Although they could trade in a few settlements where the inhabitants thought that they were simply members of a nomadic tribe, they rarely interacted with humans. Every once in a while, Aza would chirp for his brother, and after several disheartening tries, he finally got a response. "Themba!" he said, and started forward at a brisk jog (probably something like a normal run to most other creatures). His brother likewise met him, though he was more breathless, as if he'd run a long way. He panted, and as soon as they'd come to halt, he sank down into the grass. "Are you alright? Did you find anything?" Aza asked, his ears perked for any signs of nearby danger. Themba nodded. "A.. small village... a few miles..." Zaan nodded, then leaned down to lick his brother's face with affectionate thanks. Themba purred for a moment before pushing his face away with a paw (careful not to claw him with his unretractable claws). "We should find somewhere to stay for the night and go in the morning. It would be senseless to go now." "Yes," Themba agreed, standing, though he still panted. ((Meh. Boring post. At this point, I almost like Themba more than Aza [though that should change with time].)) |

Leeria listened, trying to absorb as much as she could. She felt like her mind was as slow as her feet in comparison to the creature beside her. Eventually, the chirping was returned, and she trotted after him, not willing to tire herself with a full run to keep pace with him. She listened to their meeting- they chirped like birds and... and... she didn't know what to call the other thing. They made this little happy growl- but it wasn't a growl. She growled at different pitches, but was unsuccessful. She snorted, cheetahs were strange, for sure. She heard no other cats do such a thing. Regardless, she would not hold anything against them, everyone was created with a different purpose. She approached once they had finished talking and being happy- meeting. They had barely been parted, but maybe that was how cheetahs were? She followed them away, stopping, "You say a small village? So there were humans, maybe enough for humans to hold other creatures captive?" She didn't wait for an answer, but turned toward the village's direction and released a thunderous roar. She did this several times before pausing, panting, and listening. Nothing. She supposed he was too far away, if he was there, but that didn't mean she couldn't try. They must be close, though, she felt stronger. Maybe he was at this village, then she could return to her home, then to the necessary location. She may not see these kind cheetahs again, but she would thank them somehow, before she left, even if her companion was not with her. They were already doing so much for her, she was more than grateful. Once they had settled to rest she jumped up into the nearest tree, suddenly realizing the situation she was in. She could be years from her home. Humans traveled so fast, but on foot and through complicated secret paths, it could take forever to get home... Not to mention, she was alone. She knew she would need to conserve her energy, food was good and all, but she needed another's energy. She used more energy as a tiger than a human, so she crawled into denser branches of the tree and changed. She felt vulnerable, but she knew this could give her more time. She wrapped her golden hair over her shoulder, but it just fell off the branch's edge anyway, so she gave up, watching the brothers. They had interesting interactions. Their level of affection was strange for males, her father and her partner could barely stand one another, and they were around each other constantly for her. These brothers were amazing in their affections... Another realization hit her. Her father, her beloved father, was gone. He had died on the trip, died to give her a chance to escape. Her eyes watered at the memory and she cried softly behind the branches and leaves. She missed him, though she knew she wasn't suppose to. She was alone, here, and she may continue to be alone if she was not able to save her companion... |

"Probably not, but if a human caravan went through it, then there will be a larger one nearby," Themba answered, settling beneath the tree that Leeria had chosen. "We'll look tomorrow," Aza promised, scanning the area once more for potential threats before laying next to his brother. He was used to sleeping in his cheetah form, but not used to staying in it for entire days at a time. He usually shifted when he needed to climb tall trees or when he needed to cool off quickly. Themba probably would have shifted earlier, when he'd been so exhausted, had Leeria not been around. Although Themba helped her, that didn't mean that he trusted her, and a human against a creature of her size stood little chance. At least, as a cheetah, he could get away quickly. Themba yawned widely and set his head on his small paws. "It has been a long day," he murmured quietly. "Yes. But not a bad day." "I hope that Leeria can find her way home, but I don't know how much more we can do for her." "We can help her find her escort, at least, if he's still alive and around here." Themba chuckled slightly. "I thought we were done with adventuring for a while." "Well, this time the adventure found us," Aza said with a rolling purr of a laugh. "It would seem that way." "It will be over soon enough, and we can get back to our usual lives again." "I hope so," Themba responded before slipping into sleep. Aza, after glancing around once more, also slept. ((Sorry. I'm just so tired. Feel free to godmod and have them find a larger village/town or whatever, if you want.)) |

She sighed, jumping down from her tree. She felt terrible. She had wanted to save her energy, but she just couldn't waste time in her human form... "I must find him soon. Please lead the way-" she paused to think of his name, "- Themba. I just want you to know, both of you, that you have shown me so much kindness. I will be forever in your debt, I will repay you somehow, I promise!" It didn't take too long to get to the smaller village, which they carefully passed around, but the larger village Themba had guessed at had been an understatement. Even from a distance the size was frightening. Once they were fairly close she stopped under some brush shade. "I'll find my companion, he must be here. I can feel it!" She snorted, putting her ears back, "I suppose if I die this would be our final meeting. It is custom where I come from to show thanks. Since I don't have anything, um... Well, I sacrifice blood in your good fortune," She bit her unmarked front leg and pulled away so some of her blood splattered on the ground in front of her. She then bowed, "I will most likely return and my companion will return your lands and give a good meal. I will also work hard to repay some of my debt!" With that she jogged toward the village, no, city! ((I can either have her come back and trouble can follow or Azaan can go after her to help- but for them to have any need to be bonded they would have to be in trouble somehow... >.< 'else it wouldn't make sense.)) |

((Yep, you're right! Sorry this took so long, by the way. Life has been crazy!)) Watching Leeria begin to walk away, Aza knew that she wouldn't stand a chance of finding her companion without help. Most of the villages around here didn't speak a direct language like he and Themba, but strange dialects that sometimes even Azaan, born and raised here, struggled to translate. That, and Leeria would wander around aimlessly for days before she found anything substantial, by which time it would be too late, most likely. He turned to Themba, who sighed, shaking his head and rolled his eyes. "You go. I'm going to go get something to eat." "You're sure?" "Of course. Just be careful, Aza." "You, too." And that was their parting. Azaan shifted, and then ran to catch up with Leeria in his human form. "They will think we are part of a nomadic tribe, which is good for us. It exempts us from knowing proper customs, but you must appear strong." With his shoulders squared, Azaan walked confidently. Although he didn't feel entirely confident, he knew that they stood a better chance together. And as a human among humans, though he felt slightly outcast, he felt more powerful. In the wild, as a cheetah, Aza could not measure up to the other creatures - the lions and leopards and even the zebra, he had to run from. Among humans, though, he had no disadvantages (except that he was smaller than some, built more compactly). He could hold his own as a human, and that comforted him. It was nice to be around normal people for a change. "We should start at the west side: it is where their imports will have come in before being distributed through the city." It would take time, probably most of the day, but Azaan thought that, if they worked quickly, they could cover most of the city. |

Leeria looked up at him, "I don't like to be in my human form. I was going to slip between buildings, stay in the dark, then free him 'round nightfall. You shouldn't come with me- I wont be leaving until we are free or one of us is dead. I need him, I cannot survive without him. It's complicated... Anyway, no one would believe I came from around here," She shifted to her human form, hugging her chest in nervousness. She had long golden-blonde hair that reached just past her knees, snow-pale skin, and big violet eyes. She looked dainty and fragile, she even walked as if too hard a step would crack her doll-like features. Her front leg (now arm) that had the strange markings on it stayed with her, though, and belied her other features. She sighed, looking at Azaan, "We look nothing alike. Only a complete idiot would believe I came from around here. Any other ideas?" She had to admit though, walking in her human form was less draining and the sun didn't bake her out. She couldn't stay like that for long, else she get sunburnt, but it was nice for a while... "I can sense where he is- sort of. It's a general feeling, but it should be able to help us find him once we are closer," She paused and looked up at Azaan, she was not short for a woman, but she wasn't quite as tall as Azaan. In fact, with his muscular build, he looked like he could nearly eat her. She was muscular, but, for a Siberian tiger, it was lacking in power and did not give her any substantial bulk. Their positions were now switched as humans; Azaan was much larger than her, and tougher. "Are you sure you want to do this? It's going to be very dangerous. You've already done more than enough for me. If I were to die here, you would have no guilt. I already owe you my life, once..." |

Azaan watched as Leeria shifted, curious as to her human appearance. He had expected the blonde hair (though it was incredibly strange to see it so long; here, the women kept their hair as short as the men to ward off the heat), but was unused to it. No one here had blonde hair. The gazelle shifters - what very few of them Azaan had seen - had red hair. And he'd once met a snow leopard shifter with pure white hair that almost matched the whiteness of their skin. It had been one of the strangest things Azaan had seen. Leeria was strange in the way. Though her hair was not white, it was startlingly light compared to the black hair and dark skin Aza was used to. He didn't find Leeria particularly attractive. She was very tall compared to most girls he knew, and though very beautiful, he found himself almost... timid of her. She was so very different from anything he'd ever before known. She was right. No one would believe that she came from this area. He'd be a fool to try to pass her off as anything but very, very foreign. He sighed. "You do realize that it's almost impossible to hide between buildings? They are so tight, low, and crowded that it would be nearly impossible." He removed the leather strap that he always kept tied to his wrist and used it to pull his hair back. He thought quietly for a moment, muscles rippling under his smooth, dark skin as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other, a hand lightly covering his mouth. "If I got you some clothes -- and me some, too, I suppose-" he looked down at his own nakedness, completely unashamed- "could you pass as a tourist? Or as someone here to study one of the nomadic tribes? You would not be the first to do such a thing." It was plausible and the best plan Aza could think of. After all, they wouldn't make it very far as a cheetah (known for its skittishness) and a foreign tiger (a terrifyingly large cat) without getting spotted and subdued. However they went about this, they would have to go about it in their human forms. ((Sorry it's so short for how long it took to get it up (lol - that's what he said)!! But I finally got a moment to breathe again. So, here it is. ^___^ Thanks for being so patient, Cookie!)) Edited by Oop, May 29 2011, 01:19 PM.

She thought, "My hair is normal for white humans, and my eyes we can cover with... with..." The word was too specific and she didn't know it, "The eye clothing..." She put her hands over her eyes and her thumbs back to try and show glasses. "We will figure out something, and if something goes wrong, I'll protect you," She nodded to him, her cat ears perking as she listened, she needed to hear so she had kept her normal ears. She changed into a cat again, running closer, "When they can see us, we'll change back, slip somewhere and steal some clothes..." It was fairly easy to not be noticed in the back alleys of the city. Leeria looked through the available clothes then threw on a plain white dress before she preceded to start braiding her long hair back. She must have braided it a lot since she was done in only a few minutes, "I must get past that large crowd of people, he is back in that direction..." She pointed right through the bustling marketplace. "How can we get through all those people? I stand out a bit in a crowd..." She looked back at Azaan. He was fit, but he looked much different than shifters she was used to, so she couldn't really classify if he was attractive or not; he was just, different. He was probably a sought-after male with others of his kind due to his size compared to others, but he would be quite small in comparison to males of her species. She was even petite for her species, but she was nearly as tall as him. She wondered what Azaan would think once he met her friend and noticed the differences... Well, she hoped they would be able to find him, anyway. She focused back on Azaan, waiting for his input. He was more familiar with this area, so she figured he would have a better idea of how they should go about this mission... ((soz, failed, I need to get back into the swing of it I guess xD)) |

((I think I would have replied sooner if I had any idea at all what to do with this post!)) "It would be easiest if I could just go alone," he said, sighing. He had scavenged a pair of shorts for himself, though they were slightly big for someone of his smaller stature. With a marketplace this busy, it would be easy for Leeria to simply push through and be gone before any questions could be asked. Yet, it would also be easy for them to get separated with so much jostling going on. "I don't really know. I'm not very familiar with places this busy myself," he said. As I said, you could be pretending to study my 'nomadic tribe.' It's been done before, and people will believe it."[/b] He shrugged, disappointed that he could not be more of a help. He could think of no better solutions. "Or... I could distract them. Change. A cheetah in the marketplace would cause a stir. You could slip through the crowd, and I could run fast enough to get out before people could even be sure they really saw me." Aza knew it wouldn't go that smoothly, but it still seemed like a viable plan. "I'm sorry I cannot be of more help. I don't associate with humans very often." ((That. Was. Horrible. I'm so sorry.)) Leeria sighed, touching the wall beside her; she was panting and holding onto it for some support. She looked over to Azaan, "It would be easiest if you could, but you'd never find him. Come on, if we sneak through fast enough you wont have to risk anything-" She grabbed his hand, but pulled away sharply, a puzzled look on her face. It had felt like... her insides were cold... It was nothing, probably just fear and adrenaline. She grabbed his hand again- nothing. She held onto it as she pushed her way through the crowd. Once they were through the market she let go; no one had even noticed... She glanced at a woman in rags, her hands towards Leeria, begging. Tourists probably gave them money, so they learned to ask from strange-looking people. She moved to the next alleyway, needing space from that human... She didn't like humans and didn't want to be around them if she could avoid them. "He's close, outside, but enclosed by a few layers..." She walked through alleyways, feeling her way to where she needed to be. She stopped in front of a wooden fence. It was solid, space less wood at least ten feet high stretching around a fairly large area in the middle of the city. She walked along it until there was an opening; one armed man and a part of the fence was hinged to open like a door. The guard was sitting on a chair, an old rifle leaning against his chair as he picked at his fingernails. He spotted them and stood, pointing towards the fenced area, "To front, you tourist, entrance at front. Go 'round to other side!" He sat back down. They were a good distance from the guard, the man had probably not noticed anything about them other than her fair skin, thankfully. He thought she was a tourist, Azaan had been right. "Azaan,I thought they would be holding him somewhere less public. If he is just an exhibition at a zoo, how will we free him? People will see..." They were at the correct entrance, now, men were taking coins from people to go in and see the animals. Leeria sighed again, "Humans and their trading... We have no currency either, we'll have to sneak in, and everyone here is armed." She looked at Azaan again, "I would not blame you if you left, really..." Her voice was soft and serious. Of course she wanted him to stay, but she did not want to lead him to his end, especially after she owed him so much already. ((Hey should Leeria or Azaan get injured? Like I said before, there has to be a dire situation else there would be no reason xD Oh and your post was fine, we are both just out of the rhythm, we'll get back in soon!)) |

((Hmm... I'm not sure. If Azaan gets injured, he's pretty much screwed. So Leeria, I guess, but probably on the way out, not while they're in the city. I hope you had an idea for this, because I certainly do not.)) Chewing on the inside of his cheek in thought, Aza examined the fence. In his cheetah form, he could easily jump it, but with this many people around, he could never shift. It frustrated him that, the one time he might be useful, he could do nothing. "I don't know. I don't have any money." Nor did he have anything that was worth any money, except maybe his own skin, but he couldn't exactly sell that. Or... maybe he could. If they left the city, and Leeria brought him in as a cheetah, looking to sell him, she would make a good deal of money. As soon as she got far enough away, he could run, hide, shift back, and meet up with her. It was risky at best, and someone (probably a poacher of some kind) would be set back a decent sum of money, but it seemed plausible, and Aza couldn't ask for more than a possibility at this point. He explained his idea to Leeria, seeing what she thought about it. After all, it was just as risky for her. "What do you think? It could work," he said, gauging again the tall fence that separated them from their goal. ((I'm so sorry that my posts are infrequent. These past few weeks have just been insane. And this past week isn't much more promising. After that, all should be smooth sailing, though.)) |
