Kyne groaned, cringing at the flame that fell across his back, "What a temper on you! I merely jest! Such sensitive creatures!" Though it would make him less likely to tease her, that was for sure. He knew it was far less than crippling, but it stung terribly, he rather she had bitten him. "Well she would probably attack you before me anyway, I'm just a male with a following hatchling, you're an older female..." He sighed as it began to rain, not too hard, but he knew that that meant it would be worse when it finally decided to dump buckets on their backs. Lila struggled to fly through the rain, but she was heavier now with all the rain and she stumbled, grabbing Kyne's tail with her sharp little teeth. Just like a balloon tied to a brick he was instantly sucked down. He flailed his wings out repeatedly, but she was holding onto his rudder and so they just spun helplessly. He growled and gave up, turning to grab her and tuck her in his front legs before bracing himself to hit the water. He made barely no splash and he came right back up, more annoyed than injured. He flew back out of the water, holding Lila, "You can't grab my tail! I would have caught you if you hadn't sent me into that spin!" He put her down on the beach, landing beside her. He needed to catch his breath after plummeting so far so suddenly. However, their presence was not unnoticed, and the dragon they had been trying to avoid cast her shadow above the two. She was silent even for her enormous size. She must have been very old, she was at least twice, if not three times Kyne's size. Kyne just froze, lowering himself to the ground, his tail and wings tucked close to his body, his neck low as he barely poked his head up to look at her. That was a fearful position of submission and terror, there was nothing battle-ready about it. He was terrified, he had never seen such a large female save his own mother, and she did not look like she wanted to kill him by stare alone. Lila ran behind Kyne, quivering. The female had emerald scales, glinting dully as she looked down at them. She was thicker more than aerodynamic, but with her size it wouldn't matter how fast they were, the ratio was probably ridiculous to the amount of wing power she had in comparison. Though her wings were resting on her back, her tail was lazily strewn across the short grass of the shore, her mouth closed and relaxed. She leaned her great head down and sniffed Kyne, he did nothing, just shivering. She then flicked out her tongue and licked his face, seemingly unhinging his whole body as he relaxed considerably, then straightened himself, seemingly having snapped out of his initial shock. "Please we mean no harm! I swear it, we were just passing through- the little one was not strong enough to keep flying through this weather! We were only resting for a moment, I am deeply sorry for the intrusion!" She snorted then growled, clamping her jaws gently around Kyne's midsection and scooping up Lila with one of her wings. Kyne struggled, but he wondered why she was carrying them. Dragons killed their food instantly, but there was something in her eyes that said she might not have been all there... "While I am grateful you decided not to kill me, I actually have someplace I really need to be..." She growled threateningly and he was silent again. |

((I just really need to write something. And I love this RP. ))At first, Safia did not know what had happened. Kyne was fine. Lila was fine. Then, suddenly, they were both plummeting downward. It didn't take much deduction to figure out what had happened. A dragon's tail was an important instrument of balance in flight, and the slightest adjustments to it could produce great differences. If Lila attached herself to Kyne's, then balance would become impossible. So Safia imagined Lila had done just that. For all of his stupidity, Kyne was no longer weak, and so she wouldn't expect him to simply fall out of the sky. Though Safia allowed herself to drift downward to see that both were okay, she did not reveal herself. She could smell the old female drawing nearer, and it wouldn't do for all three of them to be pinned in the same place. If it came to distracting her, Safia would be most effective from a position in the sky, not on the ground. However, as she had told Kyne, she did not want to fight if it could be avoided. Though Safia would be willing, even just acting as a distraction could prove fatal against a beast of such immense size. As she watched the older female approach, she felt her stomach growing hot in preparation, filling with fire, her mouth slick with what would become fuel at her behest. However, the older female did not appear ready to attack, and so Safia held off, circling overhead, flying through rain and within increasingly dark clouds to stay concealed while still keeping an eye on the happenings below. The older female already knew Safia was there, but she did not know Safia's precise location. Nor should she have much inclination to find out, since Safia had not proven herself a threat yet. Even if Safia had wanted to attack, she lost the chance as soon as the older female took Kyne between her massive jaws to carry him. If she struck now, the older female would kill Kyne before coming after her. So, still prepared for conflict, Safia stalked the older female, darting between clouds and always watching. She would wait until she had another chance to distract the female, and then she would make a move. |

Suddenly the trees cleared and human bodies were scorched and strewn in horrific pieces, trees smashed and knocked away. A large cave was up ahead, and in front the body of a massive beast. It was practically impossible to tell it was a dragon with all the weapons sticking out from its once-glorious hide. One of its wings had been hacked off and two large stakes were in each of his shoulders. He was a little smaller than the female. Males were prideful, but not stupid, the fact he had stood his ground instead of taking flight was strange. Kyne looked on to see why. Three egg shells were tucked gently on the top level of the cave his body laid in front of. All three were destroyed, and it could not have been more than a few months ago when this had happened. The stench was overwhelming. That such a great beast could be killed by those little naked rats... He looked up to the female carrying him so gently in her jaws. She had probably returned just too late and destroyed the army of apes that had assassinated her mate while she hunted. "I'm... so sorry..." She looked at her slain mate, the memory flashing in front of her eyes once more before looking away. She set him and Lila down away from the broken eggs on the top shelf of the cave. She then left for a moment, returning with a sheep carcass, setting it down in front of them. She turned away from them and walked back out into the worsening storm, curling up beside her mate and laying her neck gently over his, curling her large body into the space above his back. She then looked up at the sky, knowing the female would not dare attack her, but still wary. She had seen a lot of things in her years... Kyne looked at the sheep, Lila already digging in shamelessly. He looked back out at the storm, hoping Safia was alright, and then watching the female. She was giving them shelter yet she was out in the storm to lie with her dead mate. He glanced at the smashed eggshells. He could not imagine what she was feeling, but he could feel anger and pain, even though it was not his to feel. He slowly glided down to her, staying farther back as to not cause any alarm. "Thank you, for giving us shelter, the little one is so young to fly so far... And I hate to impose on such generosity, but our friend- might she join us? We mean no harm..." She lifted her head, looking back at him, her head nearly touching his by their snouts. She looked up at the sky, then sniffed him and dipped her head as a yes. "Thank you, might I know your name? Will you speak at all?" He felt a level of compassion he had never felt before, he didn't know what to do for her, but he wanted to do something. However, he knew he was powerless. "Vira," Her voice was soft and gentle, she sounded much younger than she, undoubtedly, was. "Vira? Your name sounds familiar..." He knew he had heard of a Vira somewhere... "A long life, the larger the dragon, the harder to hide..." It suddenly occurred to him, "You... You could not be the same Vira from the last Great War? You would be..." "Very old. Very tired. Go now and rest, your friend may come as well, as long as she is docile. I am so tired of fighting..." She laid her head back over her mate's cold, dead neck, then closed her eyes to rest. Vira was a legendary leader. She had led the strike that had ended the last Great War and had put dragons as the top beast. Now all creatures bowed to dragons, except for these humans. How cruel that she give so much and do so much, only to be spit on by ants... Kyne turned, calling out for Safia to come down and that it was safe. They would rest here through the storm, then leave once it passed. Edited by Cookie Dough, Feb 11 2012, 03:35 PM.

((Four projects in two hours. I think I deserve a break, don't you? ))The sight met her before the stench, but even so, Safia's stomach churned, and the same overwhelming grief she'd felt at discovering the others slain in like manners wrenched her heart. She could not see inside the cave from her position, but she knew. She could feel it in the female's sadness. She could see what horrors lay strewn in the cave by the way the elder dragon laid beside her mate, bound to him even after death parted them. When Kyne gave Safia word that it was safe to land, she glided down slowly. The closer she got, the more her heart ached, to the point where she wanted nothing more than to turn and fly away. Such horrors were hard to face, and Safia had faced many like it in a very short span. If she were smarter, she would harden her heart to such things so that it would not pain her so, but if she did, it would be the same as to quit caring about her own race, and she could not live with herself branded a traitor to her kind. When Safia alighted, careful to pick a spot where the older female could see her, she tucked her wings flat against her back and dipped her head, letting out a low, mourning keen. She was not here to fight, but she would have the female know that Safia grieved as well. By no means could she empathize, or even begin to comprehend the depth of pain, but she was willing and able to let the female know that the rest of their kind mourned with her. Eliminating herself as a threat, Safia then started toward Kyne with slow, heavy steps. The sight of Lila eating heartily gave her a spark of joy, a glimmer of hope, but not nearly enough to wipe out the darkness filling her chest. Lila was but one lucky hatchling out of so very many killed recently. How many could Safia have saved if she'd left but a moon earlier? Such thoughts did not sit well with Safia, and so she told herself that she did not know what had been happening, or she would have helped. She was currently doing all that she could, and there were always casualties in war - she could not save everyone. Wet and suddenly very weary, Safia laid her large, scaly body down on the ground a few feet from the hatchling that she and Kyne strove to help. She then twisted her neck, looking up at the living male. "This is a great tragedy, and they were many like it that I saw on my way to you. Ancient and great dragons felled and their young slaughtered." She realized that now was a chance to impart the severity and significance of what they fought against upon the younger male. It seemed to Safia that Kyne had not realized how great the threat was, not having seen the horror of it himself. (How could he? Safia's story sounded like a gross exaggeration, even to herself.) Until now. Now, hopefully, he would understand why Safia was driven from her home and why she desperately tried to save those that she could. "Whatever power these humes have discovered... it is not natural, and they must be stopped." With that said, Safia lowered her head to the blood-drenched ground and closed her eyes. She did not seek sleep, but she did desire rest, however uneasy it may have been. Edited by Oop, Feb 26 2012, 10:09 AM.

Though the storm was heavy, it passed quickly. Though Kyne had gotten absolutely no rest, in fact, he stood up feeling more exhausted than when he had laid down... Had she done it on purpose? Lila had napped peacefully, so maybe the old female was trying to tell him something... Old dragons could never just outright say things could they? He walked through the muddied grass, Vira turning to look at him, "You should not be here... I knew I smelled something funny about you..." Kyne snorted, "That's not important now, what is important is that you leave here. Please, there has been a great tragedy here, but there doesn't need to be more..." She sighed, "There is nothing for me anymore. Your mission is hopeless and pointless." He stopped, "You were reading my mind too?" He hadn't thought psychic abilities still existed, but she was very old... "Hatchling, fly back home, let the dragons flee to the mountains and wait for the humans to forget us, then we will destroy them. My mate thought the same as your friend over there, but you know better, Hatchling, even though you don't understand. You know immortality will save us in the end." He looked at the dragon beside her, what a creature he must have been. Kyne thumped his tail on the ground out of frustration, "Did you save us because of this?" She growled, "No, I spared you because more dragon blood here would be redundant. You go only to death. Wait out the humans, that is the only way." Kyne growled, scratching the ground, "But this is wrong! They should not get away with this! They would not even remember this in a couple generations all the murder they committed! We are dragons, we should not be forced to hide from ants!" "You are a hatchling, you are too young, you do not understand anything." "Lila. Please, take Lila. Her family is gone and we cannot protect her. Please, you can still be useful, you still have more to live for than to waste away here. He would not have wanted you to give up either." Kyne had to make her at least do something, he would feel terrible if he let her just die, and Lila would be too difficult for them to protect. Vira was right, they were too young for all this... She looked to the sleeping ball of scales, her hearts aching, "Even I am weakened by younglings..." She looked at Kyne, "You play on a weak point, but I understand your need as well. I will take her and go north then, but I will clean up here before I leave..." She stood, looking at her dead mate. She would not leave him like this for humans to randomly pick parts off of... He would be buried, or maybe she would drag him to the ocean... She shook her head, "You should leave soon, you have a long journey ahead of you... You have what you wanted from me and you are now significantly lighter..." Kyne went to Lila and woke her, telling her of the new plan, Lila looked mildly disappointed, but she was happy she would be safe and she didn't fear the big dragon. He then went to Safia, "Vira will take Lila north, we should leave now," He looked at Vira, how naturally she looked like a mother for Lila as she used her tail to entertain the hatchling. Her face was expressionless, but her eyes held a warm joy. He knew Lila would have a good life with such a mother. Even with what Vira had warned him about, and what he thought, he knew things could not continue like this. This was wrong, he grunted as he turned back to Safia, "I will try my best to help you, no dragon should suffer like this, especially because of the rats under our feet... We should be able to make it there quite quickly without Lila." Edited by Cookie Dough, Feb 12 2012, 04:08 PM.

In the past years, Safia had grown wary, even in her sleep. The slightest of motions, the most subtle of smells, the quietest of sounds would wake her. So when Kyne went to speak with Vira, Safia blinked open her eyes, saw what had happened, and closed them once more. She listened as well as she could, but caught only Kyne's passionate outbursts. "But this is wrong!" She did not hear the great dragon's responses, for even in the face of such tragedy, she was soft-spoken and composed. Safia repositioned her head and half-opened one eye, watching the other female. Magnificence did not do her justice. Large and beautiful despite her scars, she was a beast to be feared and to awe. Safia found that she ached to be so glorious. Even imagining being so large and powerful stretched the limits of Safia's imagination. After all, the likelihood that they would even survive the end of the season seemed to shrink with each passing day, let alone live to become such immense creatures. When she saw Kyne returning, Safia stood, shaking herself with the odd tinkling sound of scales shuffling against scales. The wet ground left small debris and dirt clinging to her underbelly, which she hated, but she was not so vain to have to clean herself before they left. After he spoke, Safia tipped her head back and let out a jet of white fire toward the now-clear sky. That Lila now had a better chance, someone more prepared and able to help her, and that they could continue on their mission without delay filled her with a triumph that inspired. Rather than respond to him, Safia pushed off from the damp ground, leaving deep gouges from her claws. She climbed into the sky, still tired, not quite recovered from the long flight, but now fueled with a warm spark of hope. Whatever evil the humes had acquired, they would stop it. They must. The thought of more tragedies such as this filled Safia with more sorrow than could be functioned around. Once she reached a decent flying altitude, she let out a bellow the expressed all that she felt -- what she could never say in words -- in one echoing, deafening, intimidating roar. ((Sorry that this didn't move the plot at all. Easing myself back in. Again.)) |

Kyne looked at Lila and Vira again, he would miss his 'sister.' He kicked off the ground after Safia, feeling ages older than when he had landed. Once they were too far to see the two females, a loud roar of encouragement shook the earth and the skies. Vira was an old dragon, and a mighty example of how powerful a dragon could become. Kyne growled, "She told me to hide, for us to hide, to wait out the humans. I... I agree, but I don't know why... Instinctual, like birds migrating every winter. Even though I feel that is right, I just can't accept that. I didn't realize how far they had really come. I just don't understand why they would do this to us... My father said that, long ago, they worshiped us. We protected them from the ravenous and savage beasts that plagued the world. Now that the problem is gone they just forget? They forget so easily. Such... selfish, ungrateful creatures..." He looked down at the ocean, the morning sun was shining beautifully today, as if the very heavens were on their side. As he looked down he noticed a small fishing boat of some sort. "Look at them... How despicable they plunder the seas with no regard for their own evil nature... For the crimes of their entire species..." He growled, turning to look away, "Safia, do any humans deserve our mercy? Should they all die? I feel like we could never crush every ant... Like it is an impossible task..." ((Bleh crap crap sorry...)) |

The only thing that Safia had thought as a solution up to that point had, in fact, ended with the destruction of all human kind. Her sorrow, desperation, and even fear had driven her to believe that the only cure for the wretchedness plaguing them was death of the disease itself. But could one wipe out a disease? She did not answer Kyne right away, but rather mulled away at what she did not want to believe. She knew the answer (for she had lived a great while, and though not so wise as many others of their kind, she was still a dragon, and not an ignorant one), but sought to work around it, to find a more comforting solution. A solution that involved vengeance and gore and heinous, mangled bodies. Rather, when she had exhausted the possibilities, she said, "If the past cannot be remembered, it is bound to be repeated." These humans were not the same that walked the land so many years ago, but the offspring of their offspring's offspring, or maybe even younger. They did not remember as the dragons remembered. To them, the beasts that once hunted them were myths, legends, that kept their scaleless babes from wandering from the nest. Safia did not say all of this, though. Kyne already knew. "I feel that they deserve as much mercy as they show, and if we cannot kill them all, then we can keep them, at least, from rising up against us and spreading again." It was true, Safia believed that. She did not believe, however, that it was plausible. Her gut told her to rip, tear, bite, slash until there existed nothing but the memory of the hairless rats. Her mind, however, knew that they were not rats at all, but cockroaches, and killing them all would never be possible. They would find crevices and hide in the dark, shadowy places of the land, holding out until they could once more scurry freely. Unless... Unless the Elders could work some kind of magic to bind the humans to death without fail or escape. They were very old, and it was possible that they could work such magic. Honestly, though, Safia did not know what could or could not be done. All she knew was that she had to try something. Their entire race depended on it. |

He did not press himself to get to their destination, he mostly glided on the winds, they were still making good time without straining themselves. He looked at Safia, remembering their earlier conversation, "Have you ever met the Elders?" He was gentle, speaking softly in order to not raise any alarms on her end or rile himself up. "They collect, Safia, they only collect. Thousands of dragons live on their isle. They just want to continuously improve our species by selectively pairing dragons with other dragons to try and produce the most talented of offspring. They collect all the rarest of dragons and leave all those too-common to fight with the apes. They are very powerful, I doubt they are not already aware. If we meet with them, we will just become part of the isle. They have long forgotten the true power and majesty a dragon has over these lands. I fear they will not be what you expect... I apologize for my earlier outburst, it was not intentional, but that is no excuse. I should be better able to hold my temper, especially since my anger had nothing to do with you and no business being directed at you." He then grunted, rolling in the air before diving into the water, quickly resurfacing and arching his neck up, his back just above the waves. He slowly moved forward, happy to be in the water. Even his scales seemed to become brighter as he lounged, like a giant mood ring wrapped around his body. He looked up at Safia, "I love the water, it is just the thing to refresh you!" He dove again, resurfacing quickly and paddling along at a gentle pace. They had been flying for quite a while, he wasn't tired, but a break was always nice. ((This is actually what I was hoping would happen - a break for them to not constantly be bickering. ))Safia knew little of the Elders, quite honestly. She knew that they were old, she knew that they were powerful, and she knew many disagreed with their ways. But she was not concerned about their ways; she was concerned about their help. Without their power, the dragons had little chance against whatever power the humes had stumbled upon. "Should we convince even a handful of those most meticulously bred to help us, then it will have been worth it," she said. Besides, no dragon, no matter how old or powerful, would -- could -- force her to submit to a male. She would not become part of any collection, and nor would she be used like breeding cattle. If other dragons allowed themselves to be flattered into being such, then so be it, but Safia would not let her mate be chosen for her, and none but one she chose would ever have the privilege of mounting her. The day though, bright waves of sunshine filling a brilliant blue sky, green fields and the occasional river or lake flashing by below, put her in too fine a humor to let such despicable thoughts -- having a mate chosen for her! The nerve! -- sink in too deeply. In fact, inside, beneath the constant ache of wariness and the sheen of ever-present hopelessness, Safia felt at peace, for the moment. Old (or young, for their kind) as she was, she had learned a great many things about living happily, and one of those things was to enjoy when nature gave blessings, for nature was the only force greater than a dragon. Or it was, until recently. There were other times to ponder the ridiculousness of such things, in any case. "It is past," she said, dismissing the apology. "Do not dwell on it." She watched with a snort of laughter as Kyne dropped from the sky like an aerodynamic stone, hitting the water with an impressively small splash. Safia had long ago cleaned herself of grime that seemed to constantly plague her white scales, but that was long ago, and she would not mind joining Kyne, if only briefly. Scouring the landscape with a critical gaze several times over before deeming it safe to lower her guard a bit, Safia did not dive downward, but rather tipped herself into a sweeping glide toward the water's surface. So perfectly did she execute the spiraling descent that she made barely so much as a ripple by the time she slid into the cool lake. She let out a content sound, something between a quiet roar and a yawn. Perhaps they could afford a small break. Edited by Oop, Mar 3 2012, 04:21 PM.

She was a stubborn one, he would give her that much, or maybe determined. Could the Elders just be resisted? Was it really so simple? He let his head flop into the water, letting the cool waves ease his worries. "Once I wandered to the ocean, after I met you, I found that rock almost immediately. I've lived there ever since. Food was plentiful and by the time challengers tried to take the land I was strong enough to chase them off. In the ocean... I feel like an ant... The deeper you dive, the bigger and more vicious things get. I swear I've seen a giant sea-snake that could have swallowed both of us just by breathing in too deeply!" He wagged his tail lightly, snorting happily. "Do you dive? It's humbling to see how small we are in comparison..." He suddenly dove, emerging about twenty feet behind her with a struggling fish in his mouth, slicing through it as a few birds circled overhead, hoping two dragons would leave some remains for the scavengers. A smaller bird twittered and landed on Kyne's neck, pecking a piece of the fish as he ate it. It then flew and ate its steal on his back. Once it had finished it landed on his nose, taking another piece, this time flying away. Kyne growled, he didn't bother with birds, they were just annoying, they usually weren't so brave either. He spit out the less savory parts of the fish and swam beside Safia, "I've heard that the first dragon is still alive, but he grew so large in his mountain cave he got stuck in there and froze himself. Can you imagine a dragon the size of a whole mountain? I don't think it's true, but it would be incredible if it was. To have that sort of capability to grow so big... To live so long to grow that big..." He looked at Safia, bringing him imagination back down to earth, "What is it you want? I mean, most dragons seek power or lots of territory or large supplies of food or a mate and clutches." He gave a quiet chortle, "Just interested in learning about my traveling partner, not trying to be nosy. We will probably be seeing a lot of each other for a while, might as well..." |

"I've not lived by the ocean since I was a hatchling. For a young female, holding coastal territories is difficult, so I moved inland. I did dive in the lake often, but there's nothing in there to startle a dragon. My sire and dame used to tell me stories of the monsters that live in the sea. They said that dragons rule the sky, but that other things rule the sea, and to be wary of them." Safia watched in amusement as the brave bird picked at Kyne's catch. She briefly thought about snapping at it, but then thought otherwise. Something so brave deserved respect to some degree. Besides, Kyne seemed only mildly annoyed with his tiny visitor. "My dame once told me that a barren female used to collect birds, since she could not produce hatchlings of her own. She walked around looking like a giant bird herself, so many perched on her. Can you imagine?" Safia snickered in amusement, a rumbling laughter deep in her throat. She dove under the water, and when she reemerged, Kyne asked her a question which she could not answer. What did she want? No one had ever asked her before, and she had never really thought about it before. She had hundreds of years to do whatever pleased her. Quietly, she thought, but the question took more introspection than Safia was willing to indulge in at the moment. "I don't know. I am still young. I have many years to decide." It seemed foolish to let herself think about it at a time like this, anyway. Within a few months, the world had become a very dangerous place, and her future in it precarious. "What about you? What is it that you want, Kyne?" |

"A bird-dragon? How odd, I wonder if it is true. I have seen humans do that, but they are such pack-rats, always keeping things. I see no need to keep more than a meal or an occasional trophy..." He looked down at the water again, watching the gentle waves lap against his shimmering scales. He looked like a water dragon with all that blue. He was a little dazed, watching the water like that, but he listened to his companion. He lifted his head, "Don't take this personally, as it is not directed at you at all, but I honestly want to be alone most of all. I want to find a warm patch with plentiful fish and a small island I could sleep my days away on... That sounds like paradise to me..." He sighed, "It is difficult to get any peace in this world now, it seems. I wish we could go back to the quiet days of rest and relaxation, now we must sleep with an eye open and be wary of murderers..." |

Once Safia's scales gleamed with dazzling cleanliness once again, she lifted her wings and used them as sails, catching the wind. She moved slowly, angling herself toward the shore. She did enjoy water, but only to a certain extent. Mostly, she enjoyed laying beside it and listening to it, rather than swimming in it. "Solitude, then? That is not so unusual. Many dragons seek time to themselves, for whatever reason." Safia didn't say it, but she did find it odd for a male dragon to want to settle. Or one so young and handsome, anyway, seeing as most males preferred to travel, seeking a mate, or mates. But Safia could understand. She'd only left her territory for two moons or so, and already she missed her old style of life fiercely. She thought of the lake of her home, not quite so deep as this one, and the forests, the plentiful game, the mountains in the background. Given the opportunity, she would return there in an instant. Saying nothing more, she made her way to the shore, where she laid herself on the small stones that made the shore. Her wings, thankfully, were already mostly dry. Laying her head upon her front paws, her chest rumbled contentedly. There would be little time to enjoy such luxuries the farther they traveled, but for now, she would make the most of it. |

He watched her go to rest on the shore, tilting his head back to look directly into the bright sun of the day. He turned his back to the shore before looking down at the water. He then pushed himself out and landed several feet from her, gently enough not to disturb the ground. He flopped and then curled his body, enjoying the sunlight. However, he only rested for a few minutes before he heard something. It didn't sound dangerous, but he had never heard it before. He skulked through the brush, trying to find the source of this weird cry. It sounded sort of like those things humans kept to get rid of rodents - oh the irony, rodents getting rid of rodents. He stopped at a little creature. It must have been some sort of hatchling of its species, it was too pathetic to be matured. Upon seeing the huge beast before it, it stopped its crying, curling its little tail in and flattening its ears in fear. It was no bigger than a little human, though much smarter. Most little humans simply cried more when they were afraid, this thing knew to shut up. He didn't understand why it was just sitting here though... He sniffed around, it smelled like humans here and blood. There was blood splatters around the area, the humans probably killed this things dame and it must have been too young to know what to do. He poked it with the blunt side of a talon, making it flop onto its other side and crying again. It looked like a bear but not quite and it was too big to be a human-cat, though it looked like one. It didn't matter either way, and while Kyne was not one for mercy, but he didn't want to kill the little thing. It was tiny enough to sit on his nose with no problem so it wouldn't be in the way. No, no he couldn't, they were on a mission. He growled then looked down to see the little creature gnawing on his talon. He snorted, "Little creature, what is your name? Do you speak any language yet?" It looked up at him with big eyes, one was blue, the other green. He examined it, it looked like nothing from this area. First off, it was white, and there wasn't snow for quite some miles, so maybe that was why its mother had been killed, if she was dead. He grunted, swinging his tail in thought, then he exhaled sharply. He sniffed its face, out of curiosity it stuck its head in a nostril, causing Kyne to sneeze and hiss at the same time. It was knocked on its back, but it stumbled back to Kyne and started grooming itself. He snorted, rubbing his nose. Served him right for trying to sniff a hatchling. Well, it was a warm-blooded so he supposed it was probably live-born, making it closer to a baby than a hatchling. It looked like a fluffy hatchling as it groomed, of course, hatchlings were a bit larger than this... He looked at the baby straight in the eyes, "I don't know what you are or if your mother truly is murdered, but you wont be a burden to me so you can come with me. Do you understand?" It clawed at a falling leaf, then bit it, spitting it out in disgust. He snorted, scooping it up in his wing, let the female think what she want, he could pick up whatever strays he wanted to. He was able to return quickly, putting down his new passenger, "You have more experience, what is this? I found it crying in the forest, I think its mother was killed and it seems to be from a snowy area..." He hadn't really thought about how she would judge him for taking in a baby animal from the forest, but now he felt a bit nervous. Females adopting babies was uncommon, but acceptable, especially when the female was infertile or had recently lost a hatchling, but males never did such things. That was one of the few defining characteristics that separated males from females was the fact they simply did not care. Sometimes males would even kill their own hatchlings if any of them showed an exceptional ability, well, they tried anyway. Kyne realized how silly he must seem, not caring for mates, wanting solitude in one place, adopting hatchlings and babies, he felt strange just thinking about it. He didn't know what compelled him to do such things, but he couldn't help himself... He examined the black stripes along its white fur and the little sharp teeth it was gnawing on him with, it must be a carnivore, which was good for him. It could have some of his kills. It mewled at him before attempting to climb up his front right leg, but failing. It must have been very young, it was so clumsy and helpless... "I know it may be strange, but it's so small it should be no trouble for me. I couldn't leave it to die." He stopped, thinking, it, it it... "How do you tell the gender of these things?" He sniffed at its hindquarters, it smelled... male-ish... maybe... He sniffed again, getting a paw to his nose, though it didn't hurt at all with his tough scales. "Well it smells like a male, so I'll assume he's a male... I'll just name him Drake, and if it turns out its a girl, I'll call her Drakka, either way it works..." Drakes were just young males, usually right around when they first got their wings. Kyne knew he wasn't creative, but he was saving him, he could call him whatever he wanted. Maybe he was even young enough he could learn dragon, he had never heard of any species except elves and maybe a couple humans who had learned to speak dragon, usually dragons learned to speak other languages since it was so much easier for dragons to learn other languages. He looked at Safia, prepared to defend himself. He wasn't crazy or wrong in the head, he was just a little different... ((Yes completely random, I just felt like it. :P)) |
