A New Beginning or a Forgotten Past –Journal of the Last Scribe Making my way to a safe enough place, I began to hone my skills again. After gaining enough strength to survive off of nature itself, I initiated my original charge of scribing. I don’t know what drew me to such a dangerous idea. Maybe I gave up on living, maybe I had nothing else to live for. Deep down I really knew though. To hell with the gods for disintegrating Elsfyr… To hell with my oath of the defense and upkeep of Elsfyr’s archives. All I knew was the lore of Oni and its transcription! Exploring the wastes divulged a lot of nothing. The land was almost like any piece of unsettled wilderness of old Oni. Mountains, deserts, cavers, fields, rivers, valleys, oceans, plains, cold and warm… it was all the same. There were even barbarians here too… however the gods seemed to have cursed them. The barbarians were now plagued with a disease. Unable to lift a finger to do the slightest harm, they were feeble. Ashen gray of the flesh, they were weak and inconsequential at first. Over time certain ones were however able to be cured. I quickly gained distance from them to observe from relative peace. One day I made my way upon a city. Not knowing what to expect, I first observed from the shadows. It was a great city! Massive walls of cobble stone, watch towers, farms, cottages, homes and huts. A true city? Civilization at last or just some other cruel trick of the Gods? I could not resist. I had to see more. I missed the company of other civilized people. I made my way further and further into the town each night to spy upon its people. I did not have any inkling on what I might see. At first I would only scale the walls and observe from a distance. Industrious people in this city: constantly moving in and out of the farms and mines. I had to get a closer look. Perched atop a guard tower, I watched with impunity as these people went about their day. Minimal violence, few thieves, and a general sense of community: closer I crept. I concocted a plan for the next night. I would draw my bow and remove the torches lighting the paths within the city. I would then enter the most secluded home and look for information about this place. Behold! Unity at last! On entering the home, I saw the familiar face of an old friend from old Oni! I barely contained myself. Terrified I may ruin my fortune with barely stifled glee, I fled the city. In the day I returned, pretending to be unaware of the city’s previous existence. I bluffed awe upon stumbling into the city, acting as if it was my first sight of civilization. Luckily I was welcomed with open arms by many of my old acquaintances. They actually made homes here in this new place, and were living successfully! In a drunken stupor from the celebratory party I decided to make my home at this wonderful place. Safety and civilization at last! Months have passed since moving into New Excava. While I enjoyed my time here, I could not stay for long. Wanderlust set in. I started braving the wilds yet again. This time I was equipped with weapons, armor, and newfound talents: the result of which was my being able to fully explore without fear of imminent demise at the hands of the nocturnal demons. |
