The guy picked last in gym class

Just wanted to hear thoughts from Boiler fans on the pro prospects of current players. Caleb Swanigan had been listed as a second round draftee on draftexpress until just a few days ago, when he moved into the #30 slot (FYI, bumping Thomas Bryant into the second round in their mock as the 31st pick....of course, if the refs of the IU/PU game had their say, they would bump them both out of the first round because they couldn't make a decision, LOL). Isaac Haas hasn't been appearing on anyone's list in the first two round of the 2017 draft except for Walter Football's list. Draftexpress has him listed as the #17 best sophomore prospect and #82 overall. Vince Edwards is listed by draftexpress as the #12 junior and #80 overall player. I'm much higher on Swanigan and Haas than the NBA scouts appear to be. Edwards at 80 probably seems about right....like his potential but not sure the consistency is there. Might be an NBA tweener. My guess is Swanigan will turn pro this year and my expectation is that he gets drafted higher than he's currently being listed -- think he'll show really well in practice sessions, but Haas and Edwards would be coming back. Thoughts? |

Side note -- Melo Trimble is showing up on draft lists as a barely draftable player. Have to think he might be regretting not turning pro at the end of his freshman or sophomore years. |

Trimble should have gone after his freshmen year. Have to think Swanigan is a late first round pick. |

Swanigan is definitely gone. Probably a late first/early second round guy. I could see a team with little cap space to draft him late first to be a third/fourth big. I think he could rebound and score in an NBA right now. Not sure he's got the long term potential for a young team to draft. The other two are never going to be NBA guys IMO. Haas may get a shot because of his size. But I just don't see Edwards as an NBA guy. He has solid size and skill all around but nothing that really stands out. He'd have to really improve on D and then he could maybe be a 3 and D guy because of his shooting ability. |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

I'm just hoping we have enough talent to get out of the first round. |

LOL.....I knew that as well. It's a typo on the draftexpress page that I was looking it....has him listed as a sophomore in the banner but as a junior in the small print. http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Isaac-Haas-82880/ |

I think Haas is definitely going to be in the NBA...likely as a low minute guy. Just two years ago, a study was showing that 17% of all NCAA division 1 seven-footers would later play in the NBA. It's probably a little bit lower now has started to emphasize shorter, better shooting big man a little bit. I would say his ceiling would be a guy like Timofey Mozgov. |

cam -- remember I had mentioned a ceiling of George McGinnis for Swanigan? Cool to hear that McGinnis is getting inducted to the NBA HOF. Obviously not saying Swanigan is a NBA HOFer by any stretch.....but IMO his game has hints of McGinnis to it -- ++ rebounder, aggressive to the basket on the offensive end and does possess some perimeter skills. I'm really high on him.....I still think he's at least as good of a pro as Paul Millsap, and Millsap's pretty damn good. |

Caleb Swanigan entering his name for the draft but not hiring an agent yet. Still think he turns pro assuming he is told he would likely be a late first round pick (I'll go on record as saying if he still there in the late first round you snatch him up regardless of team neeed), but if he were to come back to Purdue -- with the whole team returning -- they would be the favorite to repeat their big title and be one of the favorites to win the whole thing. edit: FWIW, I've seen four draft sites -- two having him going in the first round (both have him going #28 to the Lakers), and two have him not going in the first round. I think his combine will tell his whole story. Edited by brumdog44, Apr 5 2017, 07:04 PM.

Hope he goes to the blazers, although I think he's drafted earlier than that. |

As long as he gets drafted, I think he will go. A team in win now mode should be happy to get him late in the first, although some of those teams boot 1st rd picks because of the guaranteed money. Not sure he will ever be an All Star but I think his rebounding translates and he's a pretty good shooter and passer. Added space to work should help his TOs. |

At worst, he's a lunch pail PF that is NBA ready. Every time I try to come up with an NBA comparison, I come up with someone who has had a long career. Latest guy that pops to mind is Antonio Davis, but I think Swanigan is better than him because he has a more refined offensive game and is a better passer. |

Agreed, and I have to admit I've been paying a little bit of attention to Portland. |
