Here's some random thoughts on the upcoming Cubs season. We should certainly be improved by shifting the pieces around and picking up Fukudome. It sounds like Lou is (finally!) going to move Soriano down in the lineup to put him in more RBI situations, where Fukudome and Theriot can set the table. I know Theriot was really hot in July and floundered down the stretch, but I think he's capable of putting together a decent year (which he did if you look at all of last year). He's a guy with a career BA of .276 and an OBP of .341, so he has proven himself at least enough to get another year at SS or 2B. I really like DLee coming back a full year removed from the wrist injury, and his power should rebound. DeRosa might have a hard time matching what he did last year, but I see Ramirez and Soto picking up any slack in the offense (not to mention DLee and Soriano). Pitching-wise, we are much deeper, though perhaps we could use another real stud in the rotation. Z will be Z, for better and worse. Hill has a terrific curve, but I worry about his control. Some times he can't find the zone, and on other days he can look unhittable. Lilly was the steal of last year's off-season moves, and he should be just as good if not better (thrilled if we can get 18-20 wins from Lilly). Dempster and Marquis should be good, but they both need to check over their shoulder for a capable Sean Marshall and veteran Jon Lieber, because either of those guys could take either starting spot. Bullpen and bench could be real problems. I like what we have with Wood (closer for now), Marmol (closer of the future) and Howry (all-purpose guy), but besides that, who is going to do long relief? Gallagher seems decent, but Eyre had a terrible season last year. He needs to rebound for us. We just need a reliable way to get from our good starters to our good endgame guys. The bench consists of Ward, who can hit moonshots and has shown to be a nice bat towards the end of the game, and Murton, who will likely be traded soon. I like Murton's bat, but his fielding has always caused me to get sick. We'll see what we can make out of that situation. I like where we are with respect to our division. The Brewers will be very good again this year, but the new configuration of the lineup, a deeper rotation, and the addition of a nice contact hitter like Fukudome should put us in the playoffs again this year. How we compete with whoever we face in a crapshoot of the playoffs (Dbacks, Mets, etc.) is anyone's guess, but we should be more playoff-ready than we were last year. |

Hey Phil, look forward to talking a lot of cubs this summer. I love Theriot's game and I love him leading off. I think he can hit .290 for the year and he's a smart base stealing threat. They've been using Fontenot as backup at short some this spring. I don't know if Cedeno can stick around all year or not. I think Lou has wanted to move Soriano down for some time but was afraid to shake things up too much and Soriano liked leading off. It's Lou's team now and I think he'll be more proactive in his 2nd year. I don't like Dempster or Marquis. I hope you're right about Marshall and Lieber. I think Marshall still has a chance of being a quality starter in the majors. We just signed Reed Johnson as a backup in the outfield. Even then we seem awful thin out there. I think Pie might be the key to how far we go. Slap the ball around, beat out some throws, and get some walks. Hit .275 and score lots of runs with the guys at the top driving you in. D Lee and Big Z need to have a good spring and we'll be off and running. :chug: |

I am kind of a Theriot fan, since he's such an underdog kind of player that really plays hard and understands the game. I get shit from that from most Cub fans, but whatever. I don't like Fontenot anywhere but 2B, but he's a solid lefty bat off the bench (which I forgot to mention). Soriano will move down to 3rd, according to the Trib. Here's the lineup they've put out there a few days ago, which I actually like quite a bit: 1 Theriot 2 Fukudome 3 Soriano 4 DLee 5 Ramirez 6 DeRosa 7 Soto 8 Pie 9 Pitcher I think this is our best bet, since Theriot and Fukudome should be good OBP guys setting the table for Soriano, Lee, and Rammy to mash. If Theriot struggles, Soriano would leapfrog Fukudome to leadoff again, and Theriot would bat 8, I think. Everyone would move up. I think adding that good contact lefty bat in Fukudome will make a big difference in RBI totals for Lee and Rammy, who should both have monster years. Z has all that contract business behind him, so he has no reason to be anything but focused and should be at a Cy Young level (might get beat out by Santana, though). I also like Marshall, and I think he'll be getting starts sooner rather than later. But if he could produce in the bullpen, that would be huge. We'll see. Can't wait for March 31, the first Cub game of the season against the Crew! Woot! |

I don't like the Cubs pitching enough to see them advancing far in the playoffs. Besides, I'm readying up my grill for 100 seasons for the Cubs being title-less. |

Although I respect you guys and all............if I hear another stupid fucking Cubs fan say "this is the year", I'm gonna blow someone's fucking head off! You guys can't be fucking serious!? Haven't you guys gotten tired of ALWAYS predicting a winner and NEVER getting one? Give me a fucking break! Are Cubs fans blind or fucking stupid? It's an open debate! For God's sake.......at least win something before you start talking smack! P.S. You guys are STILL paying Kerry Wood for Christ's sake.........fire that fucking GM already! |

We are paying Kerry Wood next to nothing. He is such a low risk, high reward option right now its unreal. This time of year, every fanbase is optimistic about the upcoming season. I don't think this is the best team in baseball, but they have plenty of pieces to have a chance at a title. The best team doesn't always win (see the Cardinals' most recent championship). |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

I haven't predicted a World Series this year. Not sure who you mean. We will be a lot better than people think, however, and we should at least get to the NLCS (if not further). Like someone else said, we're paying Wood peanuts to pitch for us, and he's earned the closer's role during Spring Training. Will he finish out the year healthy? I doubt it, but he's showing some good signs thusfar. |

Haha....I love the title of this thread "Aint no baseball like Cubs baseball". Yeah, that's definitely correct.....there aint no baseball team gone longer without a World Championship. There aint no team more prone to failure than the cubs. There aint no team that disappoints there fans every October (or earlier) like the Cubbies. There aint no team with a more cult-like fan base following their team into the depths of mediocrity year after year, even though they know deep down, that's where they're heading, like the cubs. I know Cub fans are going to go crazy on me here, but seriously take a look at the post...how far off am I from the truth? BTW, I'm a Reds fan, so you can use that for ammunition....just following the rules of engagement. |

The title of the thread comes from the WGN radio broadcast "theme." Please unbunch the wad in your panties. Why can't Cubs fans talk about their team here? I don't have any unrealistic expectations this year, but I do think we have as good a team as the Cubs have had in quite a while. Is that unreasonable? |

I'm just having fun with you guys. Seriously I respect the loyalty that Cub fans show....I don't always understand it because I don't they Cub management returns the favor to the fans, but that's your deal. I'm dealing with the same issues as a Reds fan....we just keep farming players for other teams. |
