| Greenspan: Give Credit Where Credit's Due; It's Only Fair.... | |

Ok, I'm as upset at Greenspan as anyone else for the debacle that was the Sampson situation. But Katz has this right: Greenspan deserves an enormous amount of credit for covering his tail and making an outstanding hire here that was, as is now Greenspan's trademark, completely out of left field. Let's be honest here: if a good hire was made, the committee would get credit. If they made a bad hire, the guilt would be on Greenspan. Right? Remember how we were talking about this committee being essentially Greenspan's puppet? Well if it was his puppet, and even if it wasn't, our AD just made a hire that surpasses the quality of his hire of Hep. I mean, Crean had a big ol' fat contract at Marquette, and we didn't let that stop us. We rolled up our sleeves, went out and got one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the country who was destined for a big-time job, and shocked the entire nation in doing so. So I'm going to give the guy credit where it's due. Greenspan's partially redeemed himself in my eyes with this amazing move. |

like Pat Forde said (great journalist btw), Greenspan was down 0-2 and hit one out of the park. I'm still not in love with him but he's done some pretty good stuff here. -New Bball facility/stadium modeled after the Cleveland Cavs' -New Football stadium add-on and facilities -Improved football team -Overseeing the vast improvement of women's basketball -Pumped more money to men's soccer etc., etc. he has done a lot of pretty good stuff for a lot of sports. he hasn't focused his attn./money solely on basketball. it may have hurt the bball team a little bit, but he's at least overseen the pretty drastic improvement of a lot of other sports. edit: how could i forget about the hiring of coach hep? awesome move. oh, and coach jack is like the hep of women's bball -- so he gets credit for that too. |

Your shittin me with this stuff. The guy is a Sampsonite. The Crean hire is the result of Indiana Alumni gettin it done. Our President? Useless. Athletic Department? Useless. Athletic Director? Useless. Alumni money and decisions run the show...Crean is an awesome hire, but this is still the most dysfunctional athletics program in the country. If it wasnt for alumni money and pressure, we either would still have He Whos Name Shall Not Be Spoken, or we'd be getting ready to offer Dakich a permanent position. |

sorry fallen, i'm going to have to disagree with the fact this is the "worst" athletic dept. situation in the nation -- its bad, but not the worst. and, mcrobbie is showing GREAT signs as a president (academic wise). he pledged 1 billion dollars in academic improvements through buildings and faculty over the next decade. |

He has to get some credit and he has semi-redeemed himself. But Fallen is right, the committee and Alumi have to have some credit too. I think the entire University redeemed themselves, including the President for having the balls to force Greenspan to make a decision in a week and for forming a committee, even though the announcement wasn't good timing, to help Greenspan search for our new coach. Enough said. |

Fallen's having it both ways here, as I addressed in my original post. If the hire was good, the alumni and committee get credit. If the hire was bad, Greenspan is held over the flames. And this hire blindsided 99% of the fan base. So I wouldn't say the alumni as a whole were responsible for this hire. Maybe a handful with money behind closed doors, but the alumni all over the state were lobbying for Pitino or Pearl. Like I said, I'm giving credit where credit is due. And this Athletics Department is not nearly as bad as you make it out to be, as Btown8 pointed out. If you have blinders on and only focus on basketball, yeah...it's bad. But if you look at the big picture, as the AD is trying to get us to do, things are better than basketball alone would indicate. |
