Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,

With this year's team going for the Gold tomorrow, I decided to go ahead and put up this poll to see what everyone thinks. Not trying to be arrogant, but it's highly unlikely we're going to even get challenged by Spain, let alone beat. As far as the poll, I realize a lot of the younger guys don't even remember the 1992 Dream Team, but there's no doubt they've seen highlights here and there.

With that said, I haven't seen our basketball team (Olympic) this dominant SINCE THEN. Foreign talent has gotten better over the years, and more challenging, but I still think the 1992 team is better than this year's squad.

1992 Dream Team Roster

Charles Barkley - Phoenix Suns
Larry Bird - Boston Celtics
Clyde Drexler - Portland Trail Blazers
Patrick Ewing - New York Knicks
Magic Johnson - Los Angeles Lakers
Michael Jordan - Chicago Bulls
Christian Laettner (Duke University)
Karl Malone - Utah Jazz
Chris Mullin - Golden State Warriors
Scottie Pippen - Chicago Bulls
David Robinson - San Antonio Spurs
John Stockton - Utah Jazz

Coach: Chuck Daly - Detroit Pistons
Assistant Coach: Mike Krzyzewski
Assistant Coach: Lenny Wilkens
Assistant Coach: P.J. Carlesimo

The team assembled by USA Basketball for the tournament in Barcelona in 1992, was one of the most illustrious collections of talent assembled in the history of international sport. Of the twelve players on the team, ten would be named in 1996 among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, the NBA's official list of the 50 greatest players of the league's first 50 years. Because of this star line-up, the team's games usually featured opposing teams asking for pregame photos with their U.S. opponents—their idols. The only two players on the team that were not named among the NBA 50 Greatest Players were Laettner and Mullin. At the same time that the 50 Greatest Players were announced, Daly and Assistant Coach Lenny Wilkens were named on the league's list of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History.

The Dream Team won the Olympic basketball tournament with an average margin of victory of 43.8 points and with coach Chuck Daly never using a timeout.

2008 Redeem Team Roster

Carlos Boozer - Utah Jazz
Jason Kidd - Dallas Mavericks
LeBron James -Cleveland Cavaliers
Deron Williams - Utah Jazz
Kobe Bryant - Los Angeles Lakers
Michael Redd - Milwaukee Bucks
Dwayne Wade - Miami Heat
Dwight Howard -Orlando Magic
Chris Bosh -Toronto Raptors
Chris Paul - New Orleans Hornets
Tayshaun Prince - Detroit Pistons
Carmelo Anthony - Denver Nuggets

Coach: Mike Krzyzewski - Duke University
Assistant Coach: Jim Boeheim
Assistant Coach: Nate McMillan
Assistant Coach: Mike D'Antoni

The 2008 team is averaging 105 points per game, beating their opponents by almost 31 points, and have 5 players averaging double digits. Some would argue that the opponents are more talented than they were almost 20 years ago, hence the stronger competition, and the object of this poll.

Either way, I've seen both of these teams play, and I'm not sure if there will ever be a more talented team (in any sport) ever assembled in our lifetimes than the 1992 USA Men's Olympic Basketball Team.

With the exception of Christian Laettner and Chris Mullin, all of the 92' dream team will be in the Hall of Fame.

Not sure we can say that about our Redeem Team.

I vote 1992 for the following reasons:

1) Michael Jordan. Still the greatest player of all time that no one could guard. Though LeBrron definitely creates a matchup nightmare for opponents, he is not yet nearly as unstoppable as Jordan was.

2) Better balance. The '08 team only has three frontcourt players, including undersized Boozer. The 1992 team had David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, and undersized Barkley. I don't think our current team would be able to match up...at least not yet.

3) Age/experience. The original Dream Team did have two aging stars in Magic and Larry. But most other players were at the top of their game. Jordan, Barkley, Malone, Pippen, Stockton, Ewing, and Drexler were all in their late 20's. Most of our current players are still on the uptick (under 27)

Now, having said that, I do feel like our current team would have an advantage given that they have played together for three straight summers. But the 1992 players were more fundamentally sound, and didn't need much time to gel.

But it is a very good comparison and leaves a lot to one's imagination.

With the teams as they are now, '92 would definitely win. The inside players of Robinson-Ewing-Malone and Barkley would be way too much. If this '08 team could add Duncan and Garnett in the place of Kidd (why does he play over Chris Paul) and Prince, it'd be the best basketball game ever.

Remember, Bird and Johnson were WAY past their primes, and were only there for marketing reasons. Even then, Jordan gives the '92 guys the advantage, even though I think it'd be a hell of a game.

We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

I voted for the 1992 team, but the 2008 team so far has performed better than the 1996 and 2000 teams that won gold medals.

Yo Brum, is it possible (if you can find some time) to sim this matchup? It would definitely be interesting to see these results.

92' without question. There is one thing that this team doesn't have that the other did and that it's the same reason that I don't think Kobe will ever be as good as Jordan and that is a will to win. There were times where Jordan would just simply refuse to lose and I've never seen it out of any athlete since.

I agree with you guys about the '92 team being better, but can you imagine how good of a game that would be? The biggest advantages, IMO, would not only be Jordan, but a dominant Pat Ewing down low. He didn't take much shit either.

That was a past their prime Bird and Magic though. Still good players, but not what they were at the height of their powers.

The '92 team still wins because of Jordan and their inside players. Barkley, Malone, Ewing, and Robinson is just a disgusting 4 man rotation at the 4-5.

I also think that the 92 team would win but I think it is dumb to say that this years team doesn't have the will to win. If you are maybe saying that Jordan is the most competitive player to play the game then I agree, but if you think this 08 team doesn't have the will to win then you are crazy.
