Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

This video is a nice little window into the type of game he plays. Also keep in mind that this was from his Freshmen year of high school.

The kid looks really good. I'm pretty stoked about this verbal.

Carlino bolts Arizona for Hoosiers
08/24/2008 08:27 AM
Greg Hansen
Gilbert Highland High School basketball point guard Matt Carlino has told various Web sites that he has committed to Indiana.

Who knows how good Carlino is going to be? He will be a sophomore at Highland in 2008-09, but at this point he is probably among the Top 25 from that class.

What do we make of this?

First, ASU coach Herb Sendek has failed to attract the state’s first impact recruit on his watch. That won’t go down well in Tempe.

Second, Arizona’s Lute Olson was unable for the first time in 20 years to get the in-state stud he seriously pursued. It is an unwelcome and troubling precedent.

Finally, UCLA’s Ben Howland, who was keenly interested in Carlino, couldn’t keep him in the Pac-10. But unlike Sendek and Olson, the UCLA coach will most likely be able to hand-pick a replacement guard of similar talent in the ’11 class.

Carlino’s decision to play for Tom Crean at Indiana seemed to come from out of nowhere, although he did attend a Hoosier camp earlier this summer and again last week.

Here’s what Carlino told scout.com: “When I came down here and got coached by a lot of great coaches, that just sold me. Looking up at all the (championship) bananers, that was amazing.’‘

And isn’t that what the remarkable string of Arizona players from Phoenix — Mike Bibby, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, Jerryd Bayless — used to say about a visit to McKale Center.

And why not...here's an article someone posted on Rivals from a couple years ago.

The Bounce: 8th-grader gets offer from UA
Tucson Citizen

Those who watched the Arizona Cactus Classic AAU tournament at McKale Center last weekend got a peek at a possible member of the 2011 Arizona Wildcats basketball team.

Eighth-grader Matt Carlino, who has been offered a scholarship to Arizona, helped lead Arizona Premier to a 2-2 record before the Phoenix team was eliminated by Belmont Shore in the first round of the playoffs.

Carlino led his team in scoring, averaging 13.8 points to go with 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists, and showed why he is the eighth-grader ranked No. 1 by Rivals.com.

"I don't think too much about it," Carlino said of his ranking. "I take pride in being No. 1, but I don't get too much into the ratings."

Carlino, who has been in the AAU circuit since he was 7, did say he likes the pressure of being No. 1 because it strengthens his work ethic.

Next year he will play on the varsity squad at Gilbert's Highland High.
He will be coached by his father, Mark, who will be in his first year of running Highland's program after serving as an assistant for Phoenix's St. Mary's.

"I'm really excited," Mark Carlino said. "I coached him growing up in the youth club circuit. Basketball has always been his greatest love. He works hard at it."

Premier coach Russ Pennell said he was apprehensive at first about having an eighth-grader on the team made up of high school players, but he was impressed by Carlino's attitude on and off the court.

"The impressive thing about has been his maturity," Pennell said. "He's been a very good teammate, very humble and very accessible to his teammates. He just knows how to play. He's got a great feel for the basketball game."

Carlino already possesses a strong jump shot to accompany his court vision. His off-the-ball defense is his main weakness, Pennell said.

Carlino's uncle, Brock Brunkhorst, is a former UA guard. Carlino said his uncle has attended several of his middle school games and gives him pointers.

"He's as good a kid as he is a basketball player, and that's probably what I'm most proud of," Mark Carlino said.

His quote in the first one you posted says "looking up at all the bananers" haha.

Kid looks great for how young he is. Like that he's a lefty... mixes it up a bit. And yet another outside threat =].

that kid just plain sucks. I would much prefer Crean to recruit some 2 star from Indiana just for the sake of saying he is getting in state kids. These 5 star kids are just plain worthless.

Kneel & Bob will be happy too

He is rated the No. 8 player by Hoop Scoop. Here is an article posted in Inside The Hall stating it. Why would we recruit an Indiana High School 2 Star player, if a 5 Star No. 8 player wants to come to IU?

2011 guard Matt Carlino commits following IU Elite Camp
By Big A | August 24, 2008

Indiana has its first commitment for the class of 2011 — Gilbert (AZ) guard Matt Carlino. According to our good friend Dave Telep of Scout.com, Carlino made the decision shortly after attending this weekend’s elite camp in Bloomington:

“I had gone to their team camp in July and ever since then I’ve been thinking about Indiana. When I came down here and got coached by a lot of great coaches that just sold me. Looking up at the banners, that was amazing. They’re looking for me that when I get there I’m supposed to be an impact player on their team. They’re going to really get it rolling here with him there. By the time I get there, I hope, they’ll have a chance to win a national championship. Once I saw Indiana … Coach Crean is unbelievable. He gets guys ready for even higher levels and that’s what sold me on Indiana.”

Carlino grew up a fan of the Indiana program and that influence led him to pick the Hoosiers over UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State and USC. He’s ranked the No. 8 player in the 2011 class by Hoop Scoop and is expected to be among the top 50 players in his class when Rivals and Scout expand their rankings.

that's all fine and dandy but the fact remains his home address is not in the state of indiana. That is all that matters.

HUGE mistake by Crean and IU to get this kid.

I know we all want Indiana kids, but you can't pass up a 5-star caliber player that wants to come to IU to play instead of his home state. How is it a huge mistake?

He's being sarcastic to make fun of the Purdue fans who were saying that they'd rather have in-state kids. Take it easy fellas.

Just watched that video. That kid is damn good for a HS freshman. Hopefully he improves and keeps his verbal, but there is a long way to go until 2011.

I made the comments and that's not what I said. Not even close.
