How was I defending his viewpoints? I don't think he has those viewpoints. I was just pointing out that if by some crazy miracle it happened to be true, it would never get passed.
Not sure why you don't think he has those viewpoints. Here are the facts from Obama on it. I posted this in this thread, but you might have missed it. By Obama?s account, he will make federal education aid conditional on schools requiring that high-school and even middle-school students perform 50 hours of service each year. He will also offer college students $4,000 every year for doing 100 hours of public service. That works out to $40 an hour ? a deal that only the very wealthy could refuse. (The Obama campaign puts the price tag for this alone at $10 billion.) He promises to provide older Americans who perform civic service with ?additional income security, including assistance with retirement and family-related costs, and continuation of health-care coverage.? But a government that links benefits to service can take away benefits for nonservice.
Even though Obama does not call his National Service Plan ?Mandatory?, one can easily see that it is.
I read what you posted, and it's actually something I've been hoping would happen for a long time. A lot of kids are already going to college on the governments dime. I'd much prefer they worked to earn their way by volunteering. I'm not sure how you can deem that socialist because to me that's more conservative than our current philosophy that gives money to all low income without asking anything in return.
Wow...you really don't understand socialism/communism do you? Don't take offense to that comment...it could be that you haven't studied it as much as I and other have, but Obama mandatory service/government compensation program is the definition.
Here's the thing though Aaron, you and the author of that article that you quoted are calling it mandatory, but it really isn't. Check this quote: he will make federal education aid conditional on schools requiring that high-school and even middle-school students perform 50 hours of service each year. Now this says to me that schools can not require service, but if they do they will not receive federal funding. So how does that make it mandatory? If they are given the option to refuse funding in return for not requring service, that is not mandatory. grow up Hog. That is how the Fed makes everything mandatory now days. The state cannot refuse the service/funds thanks to amendment 16 to the constitution where the Fed now takes in the majority of our money direct and distributes it back to the states. The states cannot survive on just their own tax revenue, but courtesy of the large fed burden, they cannot raise taxes...they have become a servent of the federal government through threats and promises regarding the direction of funds. Seriously...you need to wake the fuck up!

The body knows what fighters don't: how to protect itself. A neck can only twist so far. Twist it just a hair more and the body says, "Hey, I'll take it from here because you obviously don't know what you're doing... Lie down now, rest, and we'll talk about this when you regain your senses." It's called the knockout mechanism.

Seriously...you need to wake the fuck up! Yeah I know the process Aaron. I also know that the states don't HAVE to take the funds. Have you ever been to Loisiana Aaron? I am not talking about New orleans, I am actually talking about just driving around the state. The highways in a lot of places there are shit. Know why? Because for the longest Louisiana refused to raise the minumum drinking age to 21, so the Feds cut off their highway funds. Now in the end LA caved, and raised the drinking age, but they held out for ahwile. So whats my point you ask. My point is that Lousiana made CHOICE. Just like schools would have a CHOICE. Now I don't like the plan, and the alternative to not choosing Federal funds certainly wouldn't be ideal, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a choice.

That has to be the loosest interpretation of communism that I've ever seen. My local government gives scholarships based on the amount of time kids in my community spend doing community service. I guess Jasper's a communist society, who knew.

I'm looking forward to tonight's debate.
McCain is the heavy favorite, since the "Townhall" atmosphere is his specialty. we shall see...
I heading out to buy some Irish Whisky, and will do a shot everytime he says "my friends" or "maverick" or "the surge was a success" (mission accomplished?).
I'm sure that I will be shitfaced within an hour.

The federal government leaves you with no practical choice. Yes, technically they have a choice, but in reality they do not, and you know that. You know that a state cannot afford to send kids to school without the federal government giving some of the money that they TOOK from that state's residents back to that state...it just isn't practical whatsoever, so in reality it is mandatory!

McCain needs to win tonight since it is in the format of his choice, the townhall style. The last one was on foreign policy which was supposed to be his expertise and....well....he underwhelmed.
