This election could create a voting trend that may continue for a decade or more. A trend of poor & middle class citizens showing up in droves for the hope of gaining the type of prosperity that they see in the lifestyles of the rich. A false hope if they think that any government can create it for them, but not an surprising hope. Not surpriseing because this is the the same type of hope that brings millions of poor & middle class to gas stations day after day to purchase lottery tickets. The same type of hope that sends them to Casinos across the country to bet their rent on a chance. The government cannot create prosperity. You have a better chance scratching those lottery tickets, or doubling down on 7 with the dealer showing and 8. You have a better chance, because the only "promise" the government can make of prosperity to you is a share of the rich's wealth. A share may get you $700 to $1000 per month at best...hardly prosperity. Meanwhile that 700 bucks becomes worth less and less, because that check is only made possible through increased currency circulation and foreign borrowing, a policy that creates a hidden tax that no income bracket can avoid, INFLATION. Meanwhile, the rich will hord their wealth, move it overseas, and use every available resource they have to avoid giving more of their hard-earned cash away at the government's discretion. This will only lead to increased deficits, increased currency, increased national debt, increased inflation, and ultimately a lower standard of living for the same folks who truly believe they are able to vote themselves prosperity on this election day. I am not rich, but my prosperity will endure any President because I am not afraid of hard work, and I ask for nothing from anyone. If I want it, I find a way to get it, and I find a way to keep it. I am the lower end of the people to whom many of these voters seek a piece of prosperity from, and believe me when I tell you, as you go up the ladder the grip get's tighter. The celebrations for the poor & middle class this evening are a sad sight. It is as if 50 million people just picked all 6 lucky numbers, and have yet to realize that splitting the purse between 50 million people will leave barely enough money pay for the celebration itself. A sad day for the future of the poor and middle class in the United States of America, November 4th, 2008 -aaronk2727- |

Very well said Aaron. Unfortunately, I cannot envision a scenario in which it gets any better. In my humble opinion, we're fucked, been that way for a long time. :-/ |

when are people going to realize not everyone can 'be rich'???????? you would have no one picking up trash, digging ditches and you would have sky high inflation if everyone was a 'millionaire'. economically and socially impossible. and full employment is another pipedream. |

I will not be arguing these points. Either you get it or you don't, and I am personally exhausted right now from trying to feed knowledge to the ignorant. Do what you will, take what you can, and buckle up for the most disappointing ride of your life. |

agreed, but I am just very disappointed in what I perceive as the extreme ignorance and unconstitutional motivations of the millions of citizens who voted Obama into office last night. Very disappointed |

Then figure out what you need to do to change things. You like your house representitive Pence, yes? Encourage him to run for Bayh's seat in 2010, or back another candidate that is actually conservative. Getting Bayh's seat is a very high goal to set, and may seem unlikely, but so was Obama's plan to turn Indiana Blue in this election. The republican party needs to shed the dead wood. |

Exactly. I know you are down Aaron, but I look at this as an oppurtunity. The GOP has become a party of hawks, empire builders, and social conservatives, and as a result, they are dying. Those kinds of ideals by and large just don't appeal to the younger generation. What the party needs to do is embrace the Libertarian ideals of strong civil liberties, a scaled back foriegn policy, and true freemarket principles (not the watered down version practiced by the GOP now). Look at Ron Paul's following on college campuses. These are ideals that can appeal to the younger generation. Because of the entrencement of the two party system, the Libertarian party will mever be able to take over the conservative mantel from the Republicans, so it is up to GOP shift to a new direction, and really become the party they have been telling everyone they are since Lincoln. |
