Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

It looks like California will ban gay marriage, Michigan will allow medical marijuana, and Washington will allow doctor-assisted suicide. Creepy. The gay marriage ban in Cali is a pretty big blow. That sucks.

The (probably) unintended homosexual imagery in that sentence is overwhelming.

"Liberal, shmiberal. That should be a new word. Shmiberal: one who is assumed liberal, just because he's a professional whiner in the newspaper. If you'll read the subtext for many of those old strips, you'll find the heart of an old-fashioned Libertarian. And I'd be a Libertarian, if they weren't all a bunch of tax-dodging professional whiners." - Berkeley Breathed

 @ this entire thread.

But seriously, what business does the government have in what should be a purely religious institution such as marriage anyway? Let a gay couple have the same rights as a straight couple, but don't force churches to 'marry' them for fucks sakes.

You don't have to force churches to marry them. There are plenty of ordained preists and other religious figures that aren't affiliated with churches and marry people all the time. Let the person qualified to marry a couple decide if they want to marry a gay couple.

Where in the admendment does it say that a church is forced to marry gay couples?

Fair enough. This is pretty much what I was trying to say, in so many words. The government shouldn't have any involvement in marriage as an institution.

I wouldn't know, I haven't read the amendment nor would I care to do so. I guess I didn't express myself properly in my original post though. In fact, I kind of contradicted myself by including that last sentence. So...let's just pretend I never said it. I don't care what two people do and what they want to call it. The government, however, cannot use its power to coerce everybody into viewing a marriage between two men or women as a legitimate "marriage". Not saying that's my view on it (it's not, like I said I don't care what two people do and what they choose to call it), but people have to realize that not everybody will accept their lifestyle. That's what being an American is all about, having the right to have a dissenting opinion.

Does that make more sense than my original post?

One of the arguments the religious right have been using out here is that they're afraid churches would be sued for refusing to marry a gay couple.

Some of the ads that were running endorsing Prop 8 were extremely dishonest and misleading. They placed a heavy emphasis on schools and children. Many of these ads were claiming that California children would be forced to learn about gay marriage in school, which is not the case at all. I listened to an interview with the California Superintendent of Public Schools and he said plainly that not only is teaching marriage NOT mandated by California public schools, but that parents clearly have the right to pull their children from classes teaching sensitive subjects (ie- sex education).

This was the main premise of the "Yes on 8" Campaign, but really had nothing to do with the proposition at all. California voters were duped, and took it hook, line, and sinker.

And a ton of the money for advertisements came from the Mormon church. Apparantley in Utah, not only do they not want to live next to a gay couple, but they also don't want one two doors down.
